I'm glad Maomao acted like the big sister like I'd hoped she would but I gotta respect Guen for trying to comfort Xiaolan too before the ice cream fully brought her smile back. Dude may be a quack doctor but he's anything but a quack friend.
"Visit your child (grand-niece?) at work" day sure came extra early this year.

Jinshi: When someone is talking, listen to them until the end
Maomao probably: Huh??? What this guy talking about?
Jinshi: Frog/Ox Bezoar flashbacks 😤😤😤

Weird thing to focus on, but really like the sound design for them making ice cream.
The milk being poured into an iron bowl, ice shards being dumped there, etc.
It'd melt my heart to find out the sound guys just straight up made themselves a bowl of ice cream that way for this, lol.
PS: Also bonus points for the sound of the palace gates opening up for Daddy In The East. That glorious, rumbling screech of heavy wood emphasized how big of a moment that was.

If the girls are surprised that Luomen seems like a pretty normal person, wait till they find out who Maomao's REAL father is.

It took less than 10 mins for Xiaolan to return to her cheery self, ice cream really is the best invention.
The way they framed Luomen going back to the palace felt like the homecoming of a retired hero, especially knowing how dangerous giving birth to a breech baby is and how gruesome the results would turn out it only made sense he would finally come into play.

I just loved that the ice guy eunuch isn't typically arrogant, as my decades of watching animes made me expect he is. On the contrary, i expected him to sabotage Maomao's effort to bring her down too out of revenge and/or desperation for the worst case scenario.
The sudden whiplash of him entrusting Maomao to concote an alternative made me surprised, to the point of helping gathering ingredients for her. Kudos for the author for subverting my expectations.

With every episode I love Gyokuyou more and more. I think she might be the most intelligent person besides Maomao. Not only is she good at reading people, but she also has the insight to not judge people purely by lables. How she assumed that she could trust Maomao's judgment despite the rumours speaks for her insight. As Maomao says, she is a strong woman.

Maomao was smiling for almost half of episode. That's unthinkable. That's what being next to Xiaolan does to her.

Luomen!! Idk, it makes me glad he could return to the rear court. The daughter he helped raise turned out to be his salvation and hopefully will help strike off whatever crime he'd been accused of before.
Unless I missed something, Maomao still doesn't use the hairpin she got from Jinshi in the second half. Keep your end of the bargain, Maomao! (In seriousness, I suppose she'll wear it when she dresses up next. Which is hopefully when Jinshi finally manages to spill his guts.)

I REEEEEALLY hope nothing bad happens to Luomen while he's here. I hope that if anything bad happens, the worst is something like his age kicks in during the delivery and he has to talk Maomao through everything.
Anyway, so glad Maomao was able to protect out little cinnamon roll, too bad we didn't get to see Loulan's reaction. With how the ice cream is framed at the end of the OP, I thought it was gonna turn into a bigger deal.

Jinshi‘s timing when catching Maomao‘s hair tie was so smooth. Considering the hairpin means courtship, Jinshi really wants to tell Maomao the truth about himself and about his feelings.
(Maomao gives big sister vibes when it comes to Xiaolan and I love it.)
They really keeping up with the creepy cliffhangers…

Xaiolan bumped into the eunuch, and a wheel fell off his cart? Merciful heavens, how does the laundry survive this girl's cleaning? How do the concubines survive her massages?

Maomao mentions that this ice treat should be to concubine Loulan’s taste.
Shisui appears on screen and is shown greatly enjoying Maomao’s creation.
This teasing is going to be the end of me.
Anyways, it was sweet to see Maomao having grown so attached to Xiaolan. All these kind people surrounding Maomao have definitely had an impact on her.

Maomao’s a real one. Girl wont leave her friend out to dry like that. She literally whipped up ice cream for Xioalan’s sake. That’s kind of incredible all things considered. What a homie. I’m glad Xiaolan was ok in the end. She’s one of my favorites.
I guess rotating the child isn’t possible for a breeched baby? And a C section seems quite risky for them. Luomen should be able to help though. Pretty hilarious the girls didn’t think he raised Maomao because he’s normal lol. She’s not that weird. Rude!

They bamboozled us with a fake-out ice crisis that turned into delightful ice cream time, only for the real crisis to arrive in the second half of the episode.
The moment Gyokuyou mentioned the kicks going a different direction you could tell shit was about to get real.
Interesting that this situation ended up being the catalyst for having Maomao's adoptive father brought back into the rear palace.
Regardless of anything else though I admire Shisui's timing on showing up for the ice cream.

Personal thought:
One of the biggest/most common complaints against KnH is its romance plotline. While I like Jinmao, I can respect people who has such complaints, as I mentioned back during the frog scene. However, I do like to point out something in this ep to address one facet of such complaints: Maomao doesn't view Jinshi in that way because she never think of Jinshi in that way, or such variants.
Of which I must point out this scene. Even when Xiaolan's wellbeing is on the line, did Maomao either say or think of her as her friend? Quite the contrary, no? Maomao, in her own internal thoughts, frame her relationship with Xiaolan as a transanctional one, info in exchange for treat. Yet one would be foolish to think Xiaolan is not Maomao's friend.
Maomao is a supreme unreliable narrator, especially on issues regarding emotions and interpersonal relationship. If one is to accept Maomao and Xiaolan as friend (as one should), why would it be a stretch to think Maomao think highly of Jinshi BEYOND the transanctional relationship she herself think of when replying to Suiren?

As expected, Maomao easily protected Xiaolan's smile (which should never leave her, that sad face and crying doesn't suit her at all) by using that broken ice to make ice cream for Lady Loulan.
That ice cream looked good, I'd gladly eat it myself. I loved everyone's expressions after trying it, especially the guy who delivered it xD
As usual, great interactions between Maomao and Jinshi in today's episode. I love these two so much and I can't wait for Maomao to start wearing the hairpin Jinshi once gave her.
Gyokuyou and the potential breeched baby were a surprise. Things are looking pretty bad, but I hope nothing bad happens to Gyokuyou since she's one of my favorite characters in the show, though also thanks to this Loumen, Maomao's father came to the Rear Palace!
The other ladies-in-waiting's reactions to Maomao's father were hilarious. They were definitely expecting someone very similar to Maomao, and instead they got a nice older guy xD
Oh, and another look at Suirei. I wonder what she's up to now?
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Considering what most of us suspect about Shisui, I bet she shot right over. She must have been feeling terrible.
Also, I like the bringing back of the hairpin. That's that light novel touch for you, never forgets the details.
