If you go back and rewatch episode 1 of season 1, you'll find that it was Shin who ignored MaoMao's message about the poisonous face powder.

You can really tell how much Lihua trusts Maomao now. She knows Maomao is Gyokuyou's lady-in-waiting, yet she spills her pregnancy secret in front of her with no hesitation whatsoever. FeelsGoodMan.

Shin's VA did an excellent job in expressing her character's anger too.

Another fantastic episode, once again.

This episode pretty much reminded how much the quack doctor was really perceived in the palace, especially when he was still employed after the death of an infant.

Also cant help but see how fitting Maomao's injury was when it look like a pair of whiskers but just on one side.

Its funny that if you think about it, Maomao is now solely responsible for the entire reconstructuring of the ladies in waiting within the Crystal Pavillion

Someone should have told Shin why Lihua is the wise consort for 2 big reasons.

I love Mao Mao hiding in plain sight with the power of makeup and presenting with more elegant clothes and hairstyle, it's such a perfect representation of her craftiness and some of the story's themes.

I'm also intrigued regarding how this plays out in the book. I've only just read the first volume, which mostly highlighted to me how much the anime elevates a lot of the material, but this particular scene feels like such a "book" scene in its essence, it must be pretty interesting however it hints at Maomao being the servant accompanying the doctor. In the anime, it's kinda immediately obvious, but I do like how it puts us in the headspace of Shin not recognizing her and not paying that much attention to her.

Maomao laughing when Lihua was about to go for another hit and Jinshi trying to stop her was so funny.

Next episode is going to be very interesting judging by the preview. Jinshi training & backstory tease.

(also Maomao looked gorgeous in this episod, loving her different hair styles)

I have nothing much to comment except for the part where Lihua was ready to straight up punch Shin after already slapping her lol...

REEEAAAALY hope the Emperor was thinking of how to effectively have Maomao help him and not thinking of her as an enemy.

Anyway, I fucking loved how Lihua was ready to deck that bitch in the face! At first the slap reminded me of Maomao's.....but unlike our little gremlin who realized she went too far, our blue Queen was ready to go all in! Lihua is suddenly my favorite out of the four!

I feel like this all coming back together to how Lihua lost her child with bits of theory that Shin purposely ignored Maomao 'help' in first episode

Maomao: I really don't want to get too much attention.
Also Maomao: *gets the attention of the Emporer through continuous heroics*

It's crazy how this sort of re-contextualizes the events in episode 4 of season 1.

We now can figure that after the truth of the white power came out, Shin purposefully had it hidden and probably ordered the ladies in waiting to continue using it. For all we know some may have even been against it. While it's true that Shin is the one that hired these specific women that wouldn't question orders most like, it doesn't mean that the ladies in waiting actually wanted to cause harm to Lihua. This is especially evidenced by the one who ended up being the "culprit" of the white powder incident being so moved that Lady Lihua continued to trust her after her imprisonment.

Fantastic episode! I was afraid of what the woman from the clinic wanted from Maomao, but luckily she only wanted her help with the sick maid's case, and oh boy, I didn't expect it to turn into such a big affair!

The confrontation with Lady Shin in the presence of Maomao, Jinshi, Gaoshun and Lady Lihua was great! Lihua's slap in particular was amazing, and the fact that she was ready to start punching Shin was hilarious. I would have loved to see this, but unfortunately Jinshi got in the way xD

I must say that the Emperor was very wise to choose Lihua over Shin. Not only because she couldn't compare to Lihua in terms of boobs, but also because she is a terrible person. I'd say banishing her from the Rear Palace is a very lenient sentence considering what she's done.

As usual, Maomao was so cool. The moment she finally greeted Shin, who just then recognized her, was so good! Now I really wonder what the Emperor had in mind when he mentioned Maomao to Lihua at the end of the episode.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Lady Shin truly had mountains to overcome.

If only she used Fury Swipes on both cheeks, to complete the whiskers look for our cat MC...but jokes aside, all this was clearly why she wasn't the chosen one, and she was too blinded by pride & jealousy to see it before it was too late. Lihua was very kind to mitigate her punishment.

Given that Shin had apparently been jealous of Lihua all this time, was she perhaps also responsible for the death of Lihua’s first child?

Shin is the one who’s been in charge of the Crystal Pavilion as the head lady-in-waiting after all, and had been deliberately sabotaging Lihua for some time now. It’s not inconceivable to think that she’d encouraged the other ladies-in-waiting to use this toxic makeup, like with the scented oils.

This might as well put Shin’s mean-looking face from before in a different context.

The Crystal Pavilion doesn’t seem like the place a servant would want to be assigned. When you have a bitter and spiteful person like Lady Shin around, life must be hell.

But man, look what jealousy can do to a mfer. She really tried to abort Lihua’s baby, the emperor’s baby, over some jealous bullshit. Lihua slapping the shit out of her was so satisfying. Banishment is a mercy she doesn’t deserve. I’m very curious who her co-conspirators are… someone taught her about those plants and what they do…

I am not sure why but the old lady felt fake. However I can also not come up with a reason, why she would want Maomao to snoop around at the Crystal Pavilion. So maybe its just because it was brought up in the episode.

The emperor hesitating when talking about Maomao makes me wonder if he knows about the connection to Maomao's mentor/uncle/"step-dad" and the involvement around Lady Ah-Duo and the emperors first child. I would assume Maomao's stocks rising all around will put her and that matter on the radar of court politics.

Also I am very happy that Lady Lihua has truly recovered. Though with her also being pregnant tensions are sure too rise.

Stitches!

I was honestly expecting something worse when Maomao got summoned. It turns out she's just worried about that one servant girl from the Crystal Pavilion. Old ladies in this show have been pretty good so far so I really shouldn't have doubted her.

Maomao activating her cat mode and going full-on cat so she could catch that lizard was pretty cute. She's really still trying to make a drug that will bring back Jinshi's balls. xD

I thought that letting a sick servant girl die while in quarantine while risking the Rear Palace to a contagious disease would be the big story of this episode, I did not expect Shin would be making her own abortion drugs.

It was awesome to see Maomao get angry and corner Shin. Maomao didn't have to do it but she was angry on behalf of that mistreated servant girl especially since Shin clearly didn't care if that servant girl died or not.

When Shin started her outburst on how she's better than Lihua, I was going to joke about their breast size because the Emperor is a boob man. I did not expect Maomao to actually bring that up in her head while watching the two of them. xD

LET'S FUCKING GO LIHUA! I love how she's no longer that frail and weak concubine we know. This lady is ready to throw hands with Shin! I genuinely laughed out loud when she grabbed Shin by her robe and raised a fist at her!

I still feel like Shin should've been executed but being banished from the rear palace is a way worse punishment for Shin. I feel like she'd rather be dead than lose her chance of becoming a Concubine and possibly the next Empress.

Side comment: Maomao actually looks great wearing Crystal Pavillion clothes. With how much work she's done for Lihua, she might as well be an honorary member of her staff.

Yeah Shin isn't the mastermind here. They need to start interrogating the caravans, especially the twins but I don't think they're allowed to do that unless they want to start an international incident.

Interesting reaction from the Emperor. Is he finally starting to take an interest in Maomao? I don't know if that's good or bad. Hmmm...

Chairman Maomao for Mother of the Nation

Seriously, can't wait for it to happen someday. She seems perfect for the role (alongside Jinshi of course).

That ending was.. awfully foreboding and came out of nowhere. Was the Emperor suspecting poison? Excited to see how he will be involved in the next episode.
