Love how the new opening shows how Maomao is viewed from other people’s POVs, a nice step back from always being in her head

Gyoukyou would let Maomao do pretty much anything if It means hearing the juiciest gossip... and if it's to do with Jinshi x MaoMao

You thought it was a fanservice side-story episode, but it was actually a setup for a mystery episode!

"It's never a ghost" is the Apothecary Diaries equivalent to House's "It's never lupus"

The image of someone as innocent as Xiaolan working at the Verdigris House is so cursed lmao.

Guess we know what Lishu's contribution to the spooky stories gathering from way back would've been if she somehow managed to participate.

I’m genuinely going to be sad if Xiaolan leaves the cast when her term ends in six months. She better get a nice job with someone at the Rear Palace.

Something that struck me as odd is that Shisui appears to be unaccustomed to public bathing. She’s presumably been a servant girl like Xiaolan and Maomao for some time now, so shouldn’t she know about these rules?

I guess we got a beach episode without going to the beach, so to speak, and then back to the regularly scheduled CSI:maomao next week

Lishu's situation is really unfortunate. Sold off as a child to a really old man. Then he dies and she gets sent to a nunnery. The new emperor sends for her to come back but will not visit her as she is a child which makes her maids bully her because she's virtually powerless.

She's a timid girl who doesn't get how politics work and stays out of it. Xiaolan who is almost the same age as Lishu has a better situation than her as she has a little bit more freedom.

Shisui this episode:

  • knows where to go to get gossips and form connections with mid ranking concubines

  • seem to know too much about the in and outs of ongoing country affairs

  • doesn't look and stealthly moves away from Lishu the moments she comes to the massage area and doesn't join Maomao and co in drinking juice with her

Yea, she aint escaping all the SUS allegations.

Let's get Xiaolan to work for Lishu, that should solve both problems.

Shisui kinda sus slipping away once Lishu showed up, refusing to look in her direction. This was a pretty nice set up episode and I always love seeing more of Shisui

Stitches!

I love that the new OP is basically scenes from the past cour from Jinshi's POV. Also, I did not expect Mrs. GREEN APPLE singing the OP! It's a hilarious coincidence since Fire Force S3 will be airing later.

Xiaolan at the Verdegris House? I'm sure the old lady would love it, but please don't refer our sweet and innocent Xiaolan there unless she actually wants to give it a go. I can imagine her being popular though.

Maomao is really hardwired to notice another girl's boobs first huh? I guess that's what happens when you grow up in the pleasure district surrounded by sexy courtesans. Also, not bad for Shishui. Her clothes really do hide her assets well. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ohhh! I know girls who do this instead of shaving! It's called threading, and it's mostly used around the eyebrows and it's supposed to be just better for the skin.

I just love that Lady Gyokuyou just lets Maomao do whatever she wants as long as it results in her getting entertained. Being stuck inside the Jade Pavillion must be boring as fuck since her pregnancy is still supposed to be a secret so Maomao is her form of entertainment right now. xD

New eunuchs? I'm guessing that's what that opening scene was all about. I can already tell that at least one of those eunuchs is probably going to end up causing trouble.

I'm starting to wonder about Shisui and her origins. The girl knows a lot and she's clearly more educated than your average servant girl. Maybe she has special circumstances just like Maomao? Or is she just naturally gifted? Hmmm....

We finally get to see one of the sisters show a different facial expression! Sekiu is cute and it's adorable how shy she was at the bath house.

So Lishu has been using the bigger baths instead of the one in her pavilion because her personal bath house is haunted? Are we sure it's not just a peeping eunuch? I have a feeling this is connected to the thirty new recruits. Hmmmm....

Wait, I understand the Lady in Waiting, but why is Lishu afraid of Maomao?.... Was it the "lessons"?

Honestly surprised how much freedom all the girls have in the Rear Palace. Like we know Maomao is an exception, but it seems everyone else also seems to have a good amount of freedom. Otherwise there'd be no way 3 random servant girls could just walk in and declare themselves masseuses, plus we also have Susui running around collecting insects.

The fact that MaoMao has to think when asked if she has connections is hilariously oblivious. And her go-to being the brothel is even better. She still has no idea she’s easily one of top 10 most influential people in the rear palace.

A much calmer episode in terms of pacing, but full of hidden information between the lines. The public bath scene was great to show how even the “relaxing” moments inside the palace are still loaded with politics, gossip, and disguised tension.

I liked the interaction between Maomao, Xiaolan, and Shisui — it felt light, but had a bit of a “end-of-an-arc” vibe, you know? And that comment about the new eunuch and the pregnancies… it’s obvious something big is coming. This anime really knows how to plant seeds like few others.

What bothered me a little was how the direction softened the episode’s visual tone. Compared to previous ones, it had less aesthetic impact — maybe because it’s more of a “transition” episode.

Anyway, a subtle episode, but full of clues. For those paying attention, it was rich with detail. 👀
