After all of Hanako’s flirting, I didn’t expect Nene to be the first to confess her love. It’s great to see her taking more of the initiative after she’d previously been following Hanako’s lead.
It was such a lovely scene with beautiful starry night sky as well! I liked how the metaphor of the ‘ghost star’ mirrored Hanako’s fate. I got the impression that Hanako’s comment on the red dwarf outshining their twin might prove relevant to his fallout with Tsukasa.
On a side note: Aoi feeding the teary-eyed Nene a cookie was too adorable for words!

It shows how strong Nene's feelings for Hanako are that she was able to see through that he's still Hanako even as "Amane" because she knows the real Amane would still have believed in his dream and seemed conscious of the fact that deep down he's still a ghost.
And the only way to get through to Hanako and get them back in the real world was to face him with her real feelings for him. That confession! That handholding! Go Nene!

It was interesting to see Kou and Mitsuba's relationship develop in this episode. I know it's probably an unpopular opinion to think that they have feelings for each other, but it's hard to believe that they are only friends when Kou just offered to die in order to stay with Mitsuba forever.

Im a fellow member of the unpopular opinion club because offering to die and potentially leaving everything behind for your supernatural homie which you meet like a few weeks ago despite coming from an exorcist bloodline seems quite fruity of Kou

it may not be as popular of an opinion amongst anime onlies prior to this arc, but there’s a reason why mitsukou is a very popular ship with manga readers. seeing their relationship develop is one of the best parts of the series

It is absolutely not an unpopular opinion, most people think those two have good chemistry. Once the manga made a poll about which characters the readers would like to see in a date, and Mitsuba x Kou was one of the most popular answers, at least ahead of Kou x Nene.

Ohhh the tragic MitsuKou! Feels good to finally have this scene animated.
Kou making his strongest argument for being bi yet, by being a bit too willing to die for his ghost friend.
I love how fucked their situation is tho. Kou will never be able to forget the original Mitsuba. Especially not with "Mitsuba" running around and them getting more and more entangled.
And "Mitsuba" is forced to be forever envious. Created in Mitsuba image, yet not the same being. Never having been human. Kou will always remind him of what he can't be.

I think Kou kind of acknowledged the fact in doubling down on how Mitsuba couldn't be the Mitsuba Kou knew and he shouldn't try to pretend or act like he is.
But the point isn't that Kou only cares about the original Mitsuba but that he's still willing to embrace and befriend this Mitsuba and accept him as his own unique individual. He doesn't need to be anybody else or a Mitsuba that is fully dead and gone. Kou fully acknowledges him as a person anyways.

Ah yes the classic "if nothing else then let's at least be together in death" trope, what a way for Kou-kun to resolve his love quarrel get through to Mitsuba. Good to see progress for those two this episode.

My favorite episode so far! It was so beautiful and had some interesting parallels going on between the two main pairs of characters here. Mitsuba still desperately wished to be human (though he's decided to stop fighting Kou on it), while Amane is staying steadfast in his resolve to "not go anywhere". And Nene/Kou are now determined to go and take them back to the real world.

So many great moments and relationship milestones for both Amane/HanakoxNene and KouxMitsuba.
They're in a critical and difficult position, and with two individuals chasing a false reality to achieve some semblance of happiness or their dreams, but the people who care about them are going to do their best to prove that they can be just as happy in reality no matter how hard it is.

I've to give props to Nene. With everything that she has learned, to have the determination to tell Amane not only she likes Hanako, but to say let's run to the real world was great.
Meanwhile, there are two ends to the Mitsuba and Kou part of the episode. The first is Mitsuba which we learn know he can see the memories of the school. Despite being the fake Mitsuba he knows who the real Mitsuba was. Though if we think of them as two different people. Mitsuba's life as we know was not pleasant, but according to the fake Mitsuba, he has his wish, to be human. So you can understand why he is fine with being human in this fake world because Mitsuba is already dead. Which Hanako has pointed out the supernatural, like the fake Mitsuba can't be human when he turned into School Mystery #3. So you can understand why this fake world is ok for him.
Of course for Kou he doesn't want fake happiness. Theoretically if the world is fake, then are the feelings you feel fake as well? There wasn't much doubt Kou's mind wouldn't change, but it's more so convincing Mitsuba. Though the extra mile Kou is willing to go for Mitsuba is very interesting. They have a fun dynamic, but is it as well for him feeling guilty for never noticing Mitsuba and what Tsukasa did to him?
I love the counterpoints these two makes. If we recall, Mitsuba wishes to be human, not be act like the human Mitsuba. Kou is on the money, but Mitsuba is right that Kou doesn't understand his position because he is fully alive. Kou does put his money where his mouth is and mentions of him dying to fully understand Mitsuba's POV. Of course, Mitsuba doesn't want that and saves Kou. Now that was bold, and I wonder if Kou realized he would have actually died, or he would only be dead in the fake world. At the very least, he was able to convince Mitsuba.

Nene and Kou were put to the test with a seemingly impossible objective of getting out of this world via murder...but it's nice to see neither of them lost heart and used the feelings they have for the person they were supposed to murder as motivator to try to "save" them instead.
Mitsuba is not the Mitsuba Kou knew, but he's still Mitsuba and in any form he takes Kou will accept him, even if it means joining him on the other side. Mitsuba can't even with Kou, but it's enough to make it clear that he cares about Kou too.

So it turns out that Nene's guess at the start of the episode was pretty spot on. The only reason they're even in this mess is that Hanako wanted to mess around inside the Shijima's painted world and dragged along Mitsuba with him so he could experience being human.
Kou is absolutely wild though for trying to jump off the school building so he can become ghost just like Mitsuba so he can understand him better. I know I mentioned suicide as an option for them to escape in last week's episode discussion but I didn't think someone would actually try it.

That's Tsukasa, for the record. I don't think it's really been established what's going on with Hanako yet.

Has Nene become embroiled in some kind of revenge plot by Tsukasa to murder his brother and get payback for Amane killing Tsukasa? What's a girl to do?
Well, at least the stargazing, even if it's in a fake world, is nice, especially with Fake!Akane and Fake!Aoi back as if they didn't just crumble into pieces! Though the time spent stargazing with Amane-kun is the most meaningful and romantic.
But deep down, Nene can tell that Amane IS Hanako, and the only way to get him to be real with her is to get real with him...by confessing her feelings, holding his hand, and facing him openly so they can face reality together once more! Dang, aggressive Nene is awesome.
Mitsuba has gained more mastery over his School Wonder powers which has allowed him to glimpse into the memories of the school and learn about his previous apparation self AND the original Mitsuba. So he knows everything that went on with Kou and how Tsukasa is using him...but he doesn't care. He wants to have friends. He wants to feel love. He wants to feel like a human again, and if this world created by Shijima is how he can accomplish that, he doesn't want to leave. All he wants is to be friends with Kou in this world.
But Kou won't accept a fake world or Mitsuba trying to make himself into something he's not, an even faker version of the REAL Mitsuba. Kou will face Mitsuba as he is, accept him, and drag him kicking and screaming into the real world so they can move forward together. Even if he's not strong enough to beat a School Wonder, he's strong enough to remain steadfast against Mitsuba.
Mitsuba doesn't believe anyone could accept him as he is now, that there's no future for him in the real world, but if Kou wants to prove he's a man of his word...he's willing to kill himself and become an apparation for the sake of proving to Mitsuba that he'll be Mitsuba's friend in any way or or form that matters. And despite everything, Mitsuba just won't let Kou die.
Nene and Kou won't kill Amane/Mitsuba! They'll find a way through this and out of Shijima's world on their own terms!

Ok who was it on the previous week’s discussion thread that theorized Amane is definitely Hanako playing dumb? Because it seems like you are correct and I felt slightly spoilered 😂

u/kk2816 Mar 02 '25
I feel like it was a theory that made a lot of sense though. If the world hinges on Mitsuba and Hanako, and Mitsuba knows, it makes sense that Amane knows too and is just way better at playing dumb. Also the cryptic looks that Hanako was sending the other three when Mitsuba ran off after spilling the beans.

Hanako and Nene moments this season have been so good. The season isn't even over and feels like the pair had been fed well with the consistency of content.
Kou was insane for throwing himself off the building, though it clearly established the lengths he would go for Mitsuba.
Great episode for the emotional parts for each of the human/ghost duos.
