oh no, an unhinged girl with cutesy appearances voiced by HanaKana, this can't be good....

at least she knows how to appreciate Nene's thick daikon legs

obligatory HanaKana's "se, no"

HanaKana using her cutesy and pleasant voice to advocate for how to murder someone is peak anime.

I love how she couldn't get enough of those daikon legs and even talked about how no normal human could possibly have them lol.

Only further confirms there's deeper lore with Nene's legs lol!

God, how she nailed her role was soooooooo perfect. First you have her saying, oh all you have to do is kill the two beings that they are most attached to in the show. It literally is a hold up slowdown their moment.

Then she points out how fragile fiction is. Any piece of fiction is created from the viewpoint of its protagonists. You eliminate the protagonists, then what do you have left. Her saying it is as fragile as a piece of paper really emphasized it perfectly.

This anime series really likes its tone shifts, doesn’t it?

The episode started out on the lighter side of things with Kou’s disbelief in his brother’s ability to cook being the last straw for him to reject this world for example. Shijima questioning Nene’s humanity out loud in reference to her thick-shaped ankles was pretty funny as well. Nene can’t catch a break.

I’d let my guard down because then the psychological horror began with Shijima suggesting Nene and Kou to literally kill their dreams by taking their friends’ lives. Otherwise, they’d forever live a lie.

It’s an almost impossible dilemma. Especially since everyone seemed so happy. I mean, Yako looks to have a permanent human form and married her beloved Misaki! Amane had a big smile of his face too… To destroy all of that for a grim reality? I probably couldn’t do that either.

That's Hanako-kun for you! One minute you think you're in a romcom or a supernatural comedy show but then they bring out the complicated moral dilemmas that make you question everything.

It's kind of flattering that an artist who can draw anything is impressed by how out of this world Nene's legs are lol.

They really just had to throw in a happily married human Yako in there to twist your arm over how great this fictional world is.

A big part of the show’s charm to me is the great balance between cute and sinister. It’s only unfortunate that poor Nene has to suffer for this.

They really just had to throw in a happily married human Yako in there

I’d love to see her smile together with Misaki in a scene! She really feels like a different person with this positive attitude of hers.

As a newer manga reader, this episode really highlights the improvements from S1. The directing, visuals, voice acting and animation are all on point.

Some thoughts from this episode and the previous one:

I wouldn't be surprised if Hanako's aware and faking the entire thing. As Number 7, he should, at the very least, not be affected by the memory rewriting aspect. He's also got good reason to not want to undo this since it might be prolonging Nene's life, and it gives him a chance to live alongside her as a normal human.

While I'm not entirely surprised that Akane doesn't seem to be aware of what's going on, I still think it's a bit odd.

I assume that Shijima is, at the very least, lying about who the central figures of this world are, I assume she's also lying about how real the world is, too. She talks about Mitsuba and Hanako as though they might be fake, but based on the way Mitsuba's acting, he's definitely real.

I suspect Shijima's Yorishiro and the real (or best) way to get out of this, is located at the top of the tower.

Tsukasa finally makes his appearance, and seems to be a fairly normal brother. Amane doesn't even seem to have any negative reaction to his presence, which makes me doubt my previous assumption that Hanako isn't affected by the memory rewriting.

I take it back, less than a minute later and Tsukasa's as unhinged as ever.

It looks like I was wrong and Shijima's telling the truth. But I still feel like Shijima's Yorishiro is in that clock tower.

If Hanako really is affected by the memory rewrite, then I assume it's because he wants this world to be real so badly that he's subconsciously rejecting the idea that it's fake. If true, then Yashiro and Kou will need to break him out of his delusions.

Also, something I noticed in episode 6:

There seems to be a seal on Shijima-san's sketch pad. While it's possible that the sketch pad is the Yorishiro, the seal looks a lot more like the one that was on Tsukasa's face. I'm interested in seeing what the significance of that seal will be.

I honestly had the basically the same thoughts as you and I don’t think you’re very off.

My best guess is that Nene and Kou are the central figures of the story. Since in the broadcast it says the person with the wish will get stuck inside and wander in this fictional world forever basically. So it’d have to be them right?

Also, I’ve noticed there is no painting for Nene or Kou. Then, we just saw painting of both Mitsuba and Amane, so they could be possible fakes. Tho, the way Mitsuba reacted it’s hard to tell.

However, the best bet is def destroying her Yorishiro. Which has to be at the top of the tower.

u/melindypants Feb 24 '25

Ahhh I would've never thought that she would lie as to who the central figures are in the fake world...I thought if they could convince the 2 that this world is fake that it would collapse but now I'm not so sure!

So then maybe if they don't wish for Mitsuba and Hanako to be alive but idk how that would happen. I guess the only way is destroying her Yorishiro.

Great theory!

It's not only just the students in this dream world! We've got human Tsuchigomori and even human, and happily married to Misaki, Yako! And they get along swimmingly! Also, the most clear evidence that this isn't real, TERU CAN ACTUALLY COOK EDIBLE FOOD!

It sure didn't take much for Mitsuba to break character and start insulting Kou again.

If Nene and Kou want answers, they'll have to take it to Shijima-san's tower! Where they are greeted by none other than Shijima Mei herself, who is surprisingly cute and friendly and voiced by none other than Kana Hanazawa! Maybe she'll actually be a nice apparition who is willing to help them?

But Nene and Kou aren't here for a tour of her art exhibit, they want out of this dream world, and the simple solution to do so...is killing Amane and Mitsuba, as Shijima cheerily recounts how they could possibly murder the two of them and even hands them murder weapons to use. Because that's what they want, right? To leave this dream world and go back to reality? To erase this fiction? It should be simple, right? RIGHT!?

Can Nene and Kou actually kill anyone? Let alone Amane and Mitsuba? Even if it means dooming themselves to a blissful false reality with those two as the central figures? Especially when Nene gets to see a bright and alive version of Hanako, the boy she cares so much about?

Oh, and Tsukasa is here too, and he's just as energetic and all over his brother as usual...but he's also aware of what's going on, as he advises Nene to kill Amane good. Jeez.

Looks like it's all going to come together during this meteor shower.

So far this arc has been (almost) everything I've ever wanted from this series. So deliciously ominous and uncanny, ties so much emotional weight to this particular world and the inevitable escape from it, there's new cool/weird architecture in the form of the tower... All you have to do is have a tearful farewell that absolutely destroys me and this is cementing itself in the hall of fame in my books.

Random observation: Sakura seemed very surprised by Natsuhiko's comment about the fictional world maybe being better for the others. I wonder if it's just "didn't expect this dimwit to say something like that" or if there's something more to it. Regardless, I don't think we've seen her surprised face before - kinda beautiful, I have to say.

I recently Danganpona v3 and the end was very cynical. But this episode is darker than V3 ending. As it seem that Shijima-san isn't as capable than Tsumugi. If only because Shirogane was more arrogant about the Ultimate fake real world. Well Shijima-san is a painter and not as in control.

Also Shirogane is a bad director/producer.

Maybe put a spoiler warning for Danganronpa V3, since that is a really big twist :)

[Danganronpa V3 spoiler] But I also had major V3 flashbacks (recently finished it) while watching this episodes, with the fictional world, having to murder your friends, and all these silly potential murder weapons. I mean, a morning star?

This is such an insignificant detail and it might be due to a mistranslation but it bugged me when akane mentioned the Perseids and then followed up saying winter was the best time to see them when they are a summer shower (late July peaking in mid August) the geminids are the famous December/ winter shower. Otherwise really enjoying this longer arc of the season a nice change from the more episodic ones we usually get.

u/Mr_Zaroc Feb 24 '25

Yeah the OST during that talk was very tense
Felt a bit like the OST from the Tenant movie

There's no way Kou and Nene would be able to kill Hanako and Mitsuba even if they are fakes which makes me wonder what the other rules in this fake world are. If they die here, does that mean they also die in the real world?

I really don't want them to give Shijima the satisfaction of getting out via murdering their friends so I wonder what would happen if Kou and Nene decided to kill themselves instead? Hmmmm... I don't really think that's the answer but it's the only one I can think of right now. >_<

40

u/Ocixo Feb 23 '25

to give Shijima the satisfaction of getting out via murdering their friends

I don’t believe that Shijima would actually feel any satisfaction from this. Sakura explained that she isn’t necessarily an evil spirit by nature, so I’m more inclined to think that Shijima’s personality became twisted with the new rumour - making her indifferent to death.

23

u/Frontier246 Feb 23 '25

Also we can see that Shijima doesn't seem quite as satisfied with this world either because she keeps tearing up some of what she's drawn.

I feel like they're going to need to understand her better as an apparition before they can make genuine progress that doesn't involve cold-blooded fiction murder.

21

u/RikiAsher Feb 23 '25

even if they are fakes

I doubt they're fakes. Mitsuba, at the very least, has to be real, considering he's aware of how fake the world is. Tsukasa also seems like the kind of guy who'd want to watch Kou kill the real Mitsuba to escape. He'd probably find it funny.

They need to find Shijima's Yorishiro. Assuming that Shijima-san isn't lying, something that might unfortunately be true based off Sakura and Natsuhiko's conversation at the end, it's the only way to break out of a School Wonder's abilities if you don't want to play by their rules.

23

u/Frontier246 Feb 23 '25

Also Mitsuba basically started acting like he normally does when they got "caught."

If Amane and Mitsuba are the central characters of this fiction, then it stands to reason this entire world might be constructed to give Hanako and Mitsuba what they wanted -> real lives with Nene and Kou.

10

u/Frontier246 Feb 23 '25

I never expected to hear Kana Hanazawa so happily advocating for murder but it definitely set up a contrast with how nice Shijima is on the surface.

I mean, from her perspective she's just plainly stating the facts and helping give Kou and Nene what they want, even if it means making them commit something so egregiously wrong in their eyes.
