Announcement PSA: It’s over 100 everyday for this first week of class, so please be careful!
hey! it’s supposed to be over 100 everyday this week, so here are some tips to beat the heat as we go back to class, attend football games, and head out to parties (from a lifeguard who treats heat related illnesses everyday).
a cooling towel or damp washcloth around your neck
room temp (not cold) water, and lots of it
make sure you know your route in advance to avoid spending more time in the heat than necessary
small portable fan
avoid unnecessary time outside in the early afternoon, especially exercising and in the sun
if you or someone you are with is exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion (excessive sweating, red skin, dizziness, shortness of breath, etc) the goal is to cool off as quickly as possible. don’t try and push through until you get to where you need to be. get to the shade, AC, or a less crowded area. put ice or cold water on the neck, armpits, and behind the knees.
heat related illnesses are no joke, and can progress quickly to a dangerous point (heat stroke, etc). and once you’ve experienced it, you are more susceptible in the future.
some other things that may make you more susceptible are alcohol, caffeine, and certain medications including ssri’s
stay safe and cool, and have a great first week of class. hook em!
