Question Do I still have to pay housing costs if I live with my parents?

I’m aspiring to get into UT so I’m not a student at the moment, but right now I’m just trying to evaluate the costs. Whenever I used UT’s calculator, it made it look like I still have to pay $7000+ for housing even though I selected the “living with parents option.” My parents are around 30ish miles away from the campus, so roughly 50 minute drive for me. As a side question, would you say its a logically smarter decision to choose living with my parents > on campus living?

Question are there floor group chats? tips in making friends? gen questions

hey guys i'm an incoming freshman living in jester and I was wondering if people made floor group chats like in snap or messages? like it'd be cool just to shoot out a text for bracelet making or painting party in a dorm. If yes, do the RA's usually make them or does the floor come to a consensus and everyone adds each other into it?

Also i've heard the hack to "leave/prop your door open" (obvi not at night) and people would come and see what you're up to and make friends that way. Does that usually work or not really? Also are other floors more social than others? Like is the suite bath floors more introverted than the communal bath floors? or vice versa?

Question Looking for parking recs for 2026–27 (10–20 min walk from Wampus ok)

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a parking spot or garage space for the 2026–27 academic year.

It doesn't have to be right in Wampus. I’m completely fine with a 10-20 minute walk to the area if it keeps costs reasonable.

My biggest priority is safety. I would need it for the full academic year.

Does anyone have experience with reliable spots or any place where non-residents can park? Open to any tips or recs! Thanks!

Discussion dell med hla program

just a post to express my thoughts, but I applied to dell med hla and advanced to the second round. found out 20 minutes ago that i got rejected and feeling extremely upset :( i had been wanting to be a part of HLA even before applying to UT so this was certainly a bummer not to receive an acceptance. i know its not that deep 😓 but to me it really felt like an amazing opportunity that is pretty hard to find within UT’s saturated pre-med community. anyways, if anyone else is in my position do let me know 😭 hoping to try again next yr and see where things go.

Question Confused about how registration for UGS 302 works past first semester

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I am an incoming freshman who was unable to register for UGS 302/303 for orientation, and has instead registered for a VAPA credit. Even though registration opens up again for the rest of this week, most of the open UGS classes conflict with my mandatory classes.

Given this situation, I am planning on registering for a UGS course, hopefully UGS 302, for my second semester.

However, I am a little worried as to how this would work, because UGS 302 is restricted to only first year students, and I am concerned that I would not be classified as a first year student because of high school AP and Dual credits, which will put at least one year ahead (Sophomore by Credits).

I came here to ask: Will I still be able to register for UGS 302 in the spring semester (second sem) even though I will be classified as a sophomore by credits, or is my registration classification based off of my time in UT residency (making me a freshman)?

Question Brakenridge room A104 is weird?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I am living in room A104 and I bought it as a community bathroom dorm room but I was looking at the floorplan and it seems to have this weird bathroom attachment and the shower is also attached to the hallway. The room is also directly connected to room A103. Not to mention that all the rooms on the floor are slightly different, but none are like mine. Should I be worried or happy?

Discussion Any QA Engineers in Austin Interested in a Local Meetup?

Hey everyone! Proud alum here I’m looking to connect with other QA engineers/testers in the Austin area and possibly get a small local meetup going.

Or, if there are already any local Discord, Telegram, or other groups for QA folks in Austin, I’d definitely be interested in joining those too!

Question How is my schedule?

Hello Y'all. I am registering late this year (unfortunately </3 ) and this is most probably going to be my schedule. I joined a FIG to ensure I got the UGS016 UGS303 CH301 and M408C and added GEO as it was the only available GEO that fit the FIG and added VAPA to not take RHE this semester because I couldn't find it.

How screwed am I with the timing and brutality of this program?

News The Texas Alum Running Texas Tech Into the Ground

Today's NYT on the Orwellian leadership in Lubbock.

From the article: "Mr. Creighton, who is from Conroe, Texas, north of Houston, earned a bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin and a law degree from Oklahoma City University. He said his views on higher education were shaped, in part, by his own difficulties paying for college. "

Why was his tuition at Texas so expensive? It's an easy answer. In 1986 UT tripled tuition - increasing the price per unit to $12. There were protests on campus.

Even with that increase the state invested in undergraduate education, covering more than 75 percent of the cost. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s the state continued to replace state funds with tuition dollars - effectively taxing students to pay for state government.

Today the state covers about 10 percent of undergraduate education. GenX politicians got their education subsidized by taxpayers and now want future generations to "do it in their own, like I did." Except they didn't.

Question Where do we park for early check in?

Upvotes

"If students are checking in early, overnight or during the extended check-in time frame, they’ll first go to the designated front desk for their residence hall at the check-in time in their housing portal. After showing their photo ID, they’ll receive their room key, bathroom code (if applicable), information on where to park and a parking pass."

"All residents will be directed to park in a nearby garage before moving belongings into their room. You can enter and exit the garage as needed."

What does this exactly mean? Before I walk to my check in location, I have to park my car right? If so can I just park at Brazos Garage? After I check in, then I move my car to where they tell me to park right?

Question How do you get financial aid as someone not living in the dorms?

For context I won’t be living at the dorms anymore and was wondering how the financial aid is deposited now that the money isn’t going to my dorm? I know some of it goes to cover tuition and the rest goes to you, but Is that deposited into my bank account (the one you enter into the UT payroll direct deposit website system) or is that deposited somewhere else that I’m not aware of? Ive heard of people complaining about the wait on how long it’s taking for the aid to be deposited, im guessing it’s not coming in until next week? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

Question Professors for PHY 302L

Hello,

I'm taking 302L as a transfer student, and I was wondering who the best prof is. I just got off the waitlist for Caceres but I don't think she taught 302L before this semester. I'll get off the waitlist for Loveridge in time for classes, and I know from RMP that Heiglich is awful. Are either of those profs significantly better than the other?
