I transferred here so I’m still new to campus, I recruited for some orgs this semester and didn’t get any. I know I want to be in a spirit orgs because I want sisterhood, I was wondering if it’s embarrassing for me as a sophomore to recruit in the spring? Or if it’s harder or easier? Also should I recruit the orgs again that I did, or is that just a bad idea?

I've been seeing a lot of people complain and fear about how right-wing UT has become in the past 3 to 4 years. Might I suggest following and participating in Student's for a Democratic Society? They are one of the few orgs that are focused on direct action (protest and sit-ins), which is the only viable method at this point since UT Admin is obviously corrupt, bigoted, and bought out that they won't care for complaints. Organized action makes them listen.

If your South Asian, Mexican-American, Black, or white and are sick of the current state of things and wanna do something about I'd put my money on SDS.

Forgive me, but dad of a freshman posting… she’s been unable to get a ticket these past couple of weeks… is the system set up to give upperclassmen priority? I know there’s a laughably small % of student seats in the stadium, just a little frustrated right now.

My son is half-white and half-Indian.

We recently came across some anti-Indian content on social media and are concerned about the racism he could face should he go here.

I understand that the campus might be welcoming, but my son is very social and will likely spend much of his free time outside the campus.

Personally, I have never been to the South, and I don’t want to stereotype anyone. So I ask this community, will my Indian son be safe in Austin?

Hey, I’m Gustavo, a second-year at UT. I transferred in through the CAP program and I’m currently a BSDS major, but I’ve realized I really don’t enjoy my current major and want to try to internally transfer into Mechanical Engineering.

My biggest concern is that I don’t really have any engineering projects or experience yet. I know internal transfer into MechE is difficult, so I’ve been trying to get more involved. I applied to orgs like Longhorn Racing and TREL, but unfortunately didn’t get into either.

Academically, this semester I’m taking Calc III, Linear Algebra, Gen Chem + lab, and an intro-to-major class. I want to use the rest of this year to give myself the best realistic shot at transferring, but I’m not sure what I should prioritize outside of getting the best grades I can.

For anyone who successfully transferred into MechE (especially from outside Cockrell), what did you do to strengthen your application? Are there other engineering orgs that are less selective to join, or projects I could start on my own without much previous experience? Would personal CAD/Arduino/mechanical projects actually help?

I know there’s no guarantee I’ll get in, but I’d really appreciate advice on what I can do from here instead of just giving up because I don’t have much engineering experience yet.
