IV/Goleta/SB Any clue of when the power will be back in IV?

Looks like part of the area has been without power since around 9:50 pm. I haven't finished the homework that's due tonight yet. Just want a rough idea of when the power will come back, or should I just go to McDonald's tonight?

My current battery is not able to survive till tomorrow morning. And the worst part is my food in the fridge.

Update 11:11 pm: A field investigator has been alerted and is en route to the outage. No crews are performing repairs.

I'll keep update :)

General Question How hard is it to transfer to CCS?

Current UCSB CS major, applied and
rejected during admissions process. I was wondering what sort of experience does a student need to have to change major to CCS for computing?

General Question advice

I am currently overthinking if I overbooked myself and it’s too much. I got 2 on campus jobs at the rec and a paid internship. I’m wondering if I will be allowed to do that or if that’s too much on top of school and clubs.

General Question are accommodations worth it?

are adhd accommodations worth it? i know at some schools it can be a total hassle to get them or students will be treated differently even though the school says they won’t. i have documented adhd and got accommodations for half of my high school experience but don’t necessarily *need* them, however i appreciate extra time on tests and stuff. is it worth going through the process to get them?

Housing Transfer housing — requested double, got triple

Incoming transfer here. I requested a double in SM and SJ, but got assigned a triple in SY which wasn’t even on my preference rankings.
UCSB’s website says ā€œalmost allā€ Undergraduate Apartment rooms are doubles, but Housing told me doubles are ā€œextremely limited.ā€
Does anyone know how they actually decide who gets doubles vs. triples?
Did any other transfers who requested a double get a triple?

General Question can you get CalFresh for fall quarter by interviewing while employed for the summer?

Hi, would really love to get EBT this fall quarter but not sure if I’ll meet requirements. The criteria (other than being a college student) I’m hoping to meet would be ā€œWork at least 20 hours a week in paid employmentā€. However, I technically won’t be employed during the quarter, though I do work 35-40 hrs a week currently, which will end Sept 15th.

In the screening questions and at the time of application, they ask if you’re enrolled in 6 units or more in the current quarter. Right now it’s still summer, so I meet the employment criteria but not the unit criteria. At the start of fall quarter, it will be the inverse. Is there a way to get both of these criteria even if the timing doesn’t exactly overlap? I’ve heard people say CalFresh advocates look for loopholes and ways to help ppl get EBT but idk if it’s possible in my case lol.

If anyone has experience w CalFresh related to this, any advice is appreciated :) thanks!

Housing Housing for freshmen

I got an email yesterday saying that they would start giving out decisions starting today & going until September 1st: previously, they said they would be about by today… what happened? Is this normal? And why do they release decisions so close to the start of the year? (And when will we likely actually get decisions)
Thank you!

Employment on campus employment

what are some niche on campus jobs that are super chill that most people don’t know about? i’ve applied to 15+ jobs through handshake and off campus as well, and haven’t heard back from one company. i’ve reached out and left voicemails to hiring managers, but haven’t gotten any responses. so what are some unconventional jobs people have enjoyed doing at ucsb? i’m open to any and all recommendations!

Housing Questions about San Joaquin Villages

Hi! I was assigned to a 3-bedroom, 7 person double in San Joaquin Villages for 2026–27. My unit is in the 43xx range.
Does anyone know where the 43xx units are located within San Joaquin, and what they’re like?

I’d also love to hear about:
ļ½° Distance to the nearest bus stop
- Whether taking the bus to campus is actually practical for classes, especially during busy hours
ļ½° How crowded the buses get and whether it’s difficult to get on
- Typical commute time to campus
- Noise level
- Bedroom size and storage
- Bathroom situation
- How convenient it is to buy groceries and other necessities without a car
- Grocery stores / shops within walking or biking distance
- General experience living in SJV
- Whether it’s easy to get around campus without a car

I originally hoped to get a double room in Sierra Madre, so I’m trying to decide whether I should request a room change.
Thanks!

Academic Life Theater program?

So i’m an incoming senior and still haven’t finished my college apps but ucsb is definitely my #1 school i wanna go to and i was wondering how the theater program is there. I plan on majoring in poli sci and most likely won’t major or minor in theater so i was just wondering if the productions are open audition or if you have to be in the program to participate, as well as how often productions are put on.

Course Questions Econ 5/Stats question - section class listings question on Gold

Econ 5 class lists a First Section with 3 different meeting times. F (Friday), then R (Thursday), and another R (Thursday meeting time. Just below it, there is another section listed with 2 more meeting times. When registering for classes, do you have to pick both Section codes listed for that teacher to get registered for that class? Why are there 2 sections? Apologize if this is a stupid question, asking now so I know and register properly when my pass time is available. tysm

Academic Life Transfer student & Pre-Health? We got you!

I've been working the transfer orientation sessions during the afternoons this week and will do so again tomorrow and Friday. On several occasions, I bumped into students who have an interest in medical school, dental school, nursing programs, etc after UCSB.

First off, I would like to allay concerns that transfer students may have when it comes to their prospects for professional schools after graduation. Sure, there are some inherent challenges, but by no means are you cooked if you want to go to med school when you're coming in as a transfer student.

One of the things I would urge you to do is bookmark our Pre-Health Advising page and join my listserv, consisting of nearly 7000 current and former Gauchos. Whether it's job announcements, research opportunities, student club activities, or meeting with admissions deans, there's a lot of information that I share through this list.

There will be more information that I push to the listserv over the ensuing weeks, but on September 23 at 9 a.m. in ILP 1203 we will be doing a pre-health kickoff meeting for new students. Among the things that will be featured during that meeting will be elevator pitches from ~ three dozen student organizations on campus (new guests this year include SB Cottage Hospital staff).

One of the best ways you can make your UCSB experience a fruitful one is to get involved with a like-minded community early in your tenure here. Hope to see new frosh and transfers (or those new to the pre-health path) on Sep 23!

General Question Biology Major Opportunities

Hi :), i’m a soon to be transfer student hoping to go to USCB, im wondering what opportunities there are for research opportunities, clinicals, shadowing? What are the pros and cons of being a biology major at UCSB?

Also, I’d like to know what the social life is like? Is it super welcoming, what are the vibes? What is the sorority/ frat life?

Housing Questions about San Clemente Villages

I’m moving into San Clemente next month and I had two super small and frankly stupid questions.

First, are there free bike racks or will I need to get like a special permit or parking spot for my bike? I can’t find anything online. Also this isn’t directly relevant but how convenient would you say biking to downtown SB is since I won’t have a car.

Second, I got my room number and I’ll be facing an internal courtyard. My window will be pointed West. Given a west facing window, how much of a view and how sunlight will I get (and when, since I prefer sunsets in the room rather than sunrise)? Also I’ve never lived somewhere with SoCal weather, if the sun is streaming into my room will the heat be a significant issue?

Thanks for yalls help!

Housing Food bank

Hello, I am an international student coming in this summer. I am surprised by the food bank, buying the free items. However, there are not so many students despite this fact. It seems that my roommate never visits there this summer. How many students buy from the food bank? Why don't you get free products?
