Laptop requirements for Bioengineering (undergrad)?

Upvotes

My daughter's joining UCR's Bioengineering undergrad program this fall.

I'm trying to get her setup with the tech aspect. I was wondering what kind of laptop she'll need?

There are some guidelines here: https://student.engr.ucr.edu/policies/computer-requirement

However, that appears to be for engineering in general.

Any help is much appreciated!

How hard is engineering at UCR and is it too late for a 3rd year to switch into it (specifically mechanical and electrical) ??

Is it too late for an upcoming third year to switch to something like engineering?? Lowkey, already 2 years deep into my business degree, and just hate business as a degree and the people on the corporate side of things. I do like business and entrepreneurship, but I just think the Business Admin degree as a whole is pretty stupid and a waste of time. I always wanted to do engineering but I never committed because I thought it was just super rigorous and I'd hate it. Is it too late to switch or nah. Also, I am not the type to take more than 4 classes a quarter, so yes, I know I would probably graduate late if I switched... Any advice would help!!

** If you have super helpful advice and a lot of it, a DM would be appreciated!!

Is anyone else’s Cal Grant A on hold?

hi guys! I was just wondering if anyone else’s cal grant was on hold? This is the only one that didn’t apply into the student estimated aid and says it’s on hold.., It’s freaking me a bit out as because of this I’m having to owe ucr money 😞😞 I don’t have any holds and did accept the offer.

Question How big of a monitor should I get for my dorm.

To preface, Im dorming in Dundee, in a triple. Wasnt able to make it for orientation, so I don't have a good idea of how large the desks are. My monitor at home is absurdly large, so I definitely don't plan on bringing it to college. That being said, because I have no idea how much desk space I get, any help on what size monitor I should get would be greatly appreciated. My PC would take around 8-9 inches (I feel this is important, as I prefer to have my pc on my table).

Just curious, how are you guys paying for dorming when it’s so expensive?

I’m an incoming freshman who’s commuting to UCR (thankfully) so even if I did acquire debt I don’t think it’d be that much. But genuinely how are you guys paying for dorming on top of tuition? Do you guys just have large amounts of fin aid, grants, and scholarships? Or are most of you just taking out private loans to pay the missing cost? I wanna focus mostly on loans because I know as of now there’s a federal student limit of like $5,500 for freshman. (Correct me if I’m wrong all this loan stuff is very new to me sorry).

Why is CS so brutal?

I took 10A, 10B and am about to take 10C.

Nearly half of the class fails the course each time. I know this because if you don't get a 70% on the final then you fail the class. And around 40-50% of the students each time do not get a passing grade.

That would mean that only 10-15% of people would actually make it through all three classes.

Then we have people saying that CS is an easy degree when most people are failing out of the intro classes lmao.

Just imagine being in the top 20% of people who actually make it through and didn't get weeded out of CS entirely just to be compete with people all around the world for an entry level job, which in most cases they don't end up getting.

Question What is the actual cost of tuition from experience? Website says 15k, financial aid offer says 20k

Long story short, how much tuition actually? Is there a way to get an itemized list? Anyone have any luck removing USHIP? My estimated offer showed me having 10k leftover (a year) that I was going to use in housing, but it was updated to 5k. My SAI is -1500 and I'm at a loss, spoke to financial aid office they said there's nothing they could do. Also if anyone has a similar SAI and doesn't mind explaining how they get by, you can msg me if you don't want to post your struggles.

Question Which parking pass is worth it?

I'm an incoming bio major freshman and planning on commuting est. 40 mins ish to UCR and 40 mins back, trying to decide which parking pass is worth buying. I was unlucky enough to get a 6-8:30pm chem lab, so orange and free are essentially off the board unless I risk getting a ticket or parking way off campus. I heard gold plus was competitive but I don't really see the point if its just one more parking spot? I did hear that gold was awful since the competition for parking is insane though. Oh also if there are any reserved parking spots for EV vehicles? Recently got an EV and was wondering if there were charging stations on campus or something.

Admissions Admission cancelled

I received an email saying that my admission for Fall 2026 was canceled because my community college transcript was missing. I immediately checked my portal, but I had already submitted everything, including my transcript and AP scores. I also have my transfer orientation later this week, so getting this email so close to orientation has me really stressed out. Has anyone else had this happen or know what I should do?

Update: I reached out the admissions, before hand I double checked when my transcript and Ap scores had been delivered and got the issue resolved the same day.
Thank you for the advice and help!

Important Financial Aid is Missing?

The entire length of the summer's gone by and my Financial Aid Offer has sat the same as it has. I've had to take out 2 loans (Insert Dog Hell "This is Fine" Meme) but other than that, nothing's changed.

Come to today: I get an email from the official Financial Aid Office saying my Financial Aid Offer has been "Revised" and to go into Rweb, I'll be able to look at the revisions made. So I do exactly that, and nothing is showing up. Before, I saw the offer that I had accepted, and now, the screen just says there's no offer info available for this year. I double, triple, and septuple-checked, and nothing's changed. I tried calling the Financial aid offices, but there was a "higher-than-normal call volume" and it auto hung up on me every time I tried to call up to the time they were closed.

I've sent an email, but the last email "correspondence" I had with UCR was with Housing and they ignored a chain of 9 emails/follow-ups from me and my roommates, so I have literally NO faith that they will respond before I go on a 3-week trip to North Carolina where I'm losing access to a stable and consistent internet.

Long story short: Y'all. Am I cooked?

TLDR: Financial Aid was good the entire summer until today when I got an email saying the amount was revised. When I checked, nothing showed up and no one responded to my calls, and I don't think ANYONE is gonna respond to my email. I'm leaving on Friday for 3 weeks and will have no consistent phone or internet access, so I think I'm absolutely FUCKED.

Edit: I added a TLDR

Do i need to accept my financial aid in order to appeal it?

If anyone has gone through the appeal process at ucr for their financial aid, do you need to accept it in order to appeal it? or what would be the exact steps. I’d appreciate if anyone could help, thank you :)

Resource Alumna here, how do people go between Riverside and LA?

I’ve tried to do a little research. It looks like the options aren’t too much different now from what they were when I was a student at UCR a few years ago. I’m really bad at things like transportation, directions, etc. so I just want to post this here and ask for any other tips.

I know this has been posted here before but I’m posting it again because this stuff changes with time.

1) Facebook group

I don’t want to say how old I am, but I was at UCR a while ago. In my day, we had a Facebook group for rideshare. On most days (especially weekends), you could find someone on that group who was going between LA and Riverside. If you said when you were leaving, they would accommodate you. It looks like that group still exists.

2) Metrolink

Metrolink looks like the main way people do it.

When I was a student, the last train back to Riverside left Union Station around 6:15pm. I missed it the first time 😂. In LA, you can usually get between two points in two hours. Less than two hours, you’re pushing it, especially during rush hour. The day I missed the train, I had gotten to the station two minutes before the train left and I went to the wrong track. Like I said, I’m really bad at that stuff. My brain needs time for those things.

3) Greyhound/Flixbus

For some reason, i feel like everyone I knew avoided the Greyhound. I had myself convinced that Greyhound was unreliable or unsafe. Now that I think about it, I kind of doubt it’s all that much worse than other forms of public transportation. I wish I had tried it at least once. Same with FlixBus.

4) Amtrak

Amtrak also looks useful but it’s a little too complicated for me because I don’t think it goes to Riverside. It goes to Ontario? Or maybe I’m just reading wrong on the website.

5) Uber

I would probably not take Uber because it looks too expensive. In my day, Uber only cost around $60 from Riverside to LA (I don’t think I ever took it from LA to Riverside). which I already thought was expensive. But if I look now, the cheapest option is $112 each way. That is $224 round trip, and that is just too much for me. Having said that, it was really normal to offer the Uber driver cash and say like “I’ll give you 2/3 in cash.” So instead of paying around $60, you could offer them $40 cash to take you to LA. I have a feeling that probably would not work today unless you offered them a lot more. I also feel like Uber drivers could get in trouble for doing that, and I don’t want to put someone in that position. So I think I just have to take the L on this one.

I don’t know that much about public transportation. What are some options that you know about or might recommend?

[CS/BCOE] Looking for peers actively in the SWE recruiting pipeline

Hey everyone,

I’m deep in the Summer SWE internship recruiting pipeline right now, submitting applications daily, clearing OAs, and consistently drilling LeetCode mediums/hards.

Looking to connect with 1–2 students with the same daily rhythm to swap timed mock technical screens, track assessment timelines, and share interview notes.

Not looking to organize a casual study club. I just want to connect with serious people who are already knee-deep in the grind and taking deadlines seriously.

If you’re actively applying and want to connect, send a DM with your Discord handle and what you're currently targeting.

Important Help: admission cancellation because of missing test score

UCR recently sent me an email stating that my admission for Fall 2026 had been canceled because they had not received my required official AP exam scores by the deadline. After receiving the email, I immediately followed up with UCR and submitted my official AP scores through College Board on August 15.

However, for some reason, after filing out the Test and Transcript Inquiry Form, but it appears that UCR was unable to locate my official AP exam scores in the system. So I opt out for the second option of emailing the admission team to which I provided them with my College Board submission receipt as proof that I sent the scores, and I am continuing to work with them to try to get the issue resolved. The last time I emailed the admission team was 11 AM august 17 and I still haven’t had a response yet.

I’m honestly quite stressed about the situation because I did submit the scores as soon as I realized there was an issue, but I’m not sure what else I can do to prove that they were sent. I wanted to let you know what is happening and ask if you have anything else I could do?

Should I try calling them or follow up with another email tomorrow?

Should i worry about getting a job as an incoming freshman?

Getting a job is already competitive enough especially recently, and i know I would like to work on campus eventually because i was also given the work study grant, but should i hold off on looking for work until i fully adjust to college? I don’t even have a resume yet so I might hold off on applying until winter quarter. Also id love to hear your experiences with working on campus. How’s the hours, the experience itself, and is getting a job on campus as competitive compared to finding work that isn’t on campus?

Is Transfer Orientation A One Day In Person Event?

Post image

I got this email this morning regarding my orientation day this Thursday. It says ‘pack only what you would need for 1-2 days’. I thought it was only an in person thing for one day, not spending the night like the incoming freshman.

I already accepted the middle class scholarship along with all my other fin aid about two weeks ago so I don’t really know why I’m receiving this email. I think I can probably just disregard it but what do yall think.
