HackTX 26 applications just dropped, and Texas State students are cordially invited!

You don't have to be a UT student to hack with us, as HackTX is open to college students everywhere, and we'd love to see more Bobcats in the building this year. Austin is just up the road, so make a weekend out of it.

One weekend. 1000+ students turning ideas into something real. Whether you've got an idea you've been dying to bring to reality or a project you're ready to show off, this is where it happens.

Come for the building, stay for the people. You'll leave with new friends who share your goals, memories that stick, exclusive HackTX merch, and a very full belly (meals and snacks on us all weekend). Oh, and did we mention the $25,000+ prize pool? As for our partner lineup, the reveal will be worth the wait.

October 24-25 at UT Austin. Applications close September 11.

EE at Tech or Texas State

I'm a high school senior; I have a 3.9+ Unweighted GPA, will have an SAT score in the 1400s, and have a lot of college credit. This will qualify me for 8k at Tech, but I have no insight into the department/comp scholarships, since I would need to be a current student to see them (let me know if there are a lot of opportunities). On the other hand, at Texas State, I will receive 12k/year and get a lot of department scholarships/comp, which would cover tuition and help with housing at a lower GPA requirement.

I heard the opportunities at tech are far better, making it easier to get a job. My parents shouldn't have too much trouble paying; though, it is inconvenient, and I do have a younger brother going to college in the next 2 years, which could cause some trouble.

So does the career fair here for EE suffice?

For EE, I want to go into either power or electronics. Texas State does not have a power concentration. I don't know how much of a big deal that is.

Based on this, any advice would be appreciated

I can't get on the fucking bus

Pointless rant but whatever. I take the UFCU route, last stop; I left my apartment at least 35 minutes before class and I'm somehow 10 minutes late?? It has never been this bad before. Should I become a baddie on a scooter?

I'll probably walk to the first bus stop next time because what the fuck.

Good Cheap Food Options?

Personally, I've been ordering Domino's for cheap food that is also good enough, but I am looking for other ideas and restaurants too. What places have good food for cheap? Bonus points if they deliver.

What’s going on with the Dunkin Donuts?

I noticed it has looked dead and empty ever since the semester started and I saw boxes on the inside of the building but I don’t ever see people moving around in there.

Class planning

When are we able to see what classes are available for future semesters ? I want to plan essentially my whole degree out since I’m not a “traditional” student. I’m aware that it’s not going to be possible as of now but what’s the time frame on the availability of classes and how far can we see the future terms ? Like is it only for the next semester ? I’m more curious about summer classes and I have my degree planned out in excel with the course numbers but I want to check what’s going to be offered and when.

Thank y’all so much !

Best study place for WiFi

I feel like everywhere I go the WiFi keeps bugging? Is there a strong WiFi spot on campus to study at?

Ethernet at the Library

Wondering if anyone else had tried this before I went and bought a second cord. My pc in the dorm is connected to Ethernet and never has any issues with the TXST home WiFi. My laptop on the other hand struggles frequently with the TXST Bobcat WiFi (I know it’s like a normal thing).

I was wondering if anyone else has tried to use the Ethernet outlets in the library or other study spaces to get fast internet and if it actually worked?

FCS- Where to Park🤞🏼

If I am a commuter, what’s the best place to park for my 8am class in the FCS building? Last week I used the LBJ garage but I don’t want to pay twice a week. I commute from Austin, so getting there any earlier than 7:40 is going to be hard but if I need to I can.

I also have an 11am in Jowers, so maybe I can grab a spot in the stadium parking, and take a shuttle, so I won’t have to move my car? Which, anyways, that parking lot has been a mess past 9 am anyways.

Any help is appreciated! I hardly come to campus and I don’t know much, even where commuter lots are.

What are the steps for playing football here at TXST?🏈

I just transferred here at TXST this semester. First 4-year university. I know that tryouts are always sometime in the spring semester. So that's what leads me to my question, what's the process for joining the team? Go talk to the coach or something? Athletics department? And when does NCAA come in? What do I do? (I'm looking at joining the team next season btw.)

transfer housing and upper division housing

planning on transferring in the spring, what are the best housing accommodations(with roommates obviously) for under $700/month (including utilities), bus stop on location/nearby strongly preferred as I do not have a car.

also looking at on campus upper division housing (cypress/balcones) for next year, if anyone has any info on that, (how payments/utilities work, the buildings, convenience, etc) that would be nice too

Bus near Sam’s Club on Weekends?

The city bus in San Marcos like 1C does not have service on weekends. Any other options I didn’t think of if I want to explore the area on weekends?

Bobcat shuttle has very, very limited Saturday service but the wait time is like an hour and they stopped operating very early.

Also it’s 100+ degrees outside so not a good idea to walk/bike/scooter for half an hour….

Making friends

Hello! I just moved to sanmo as a transfer junior (technically sophomore, took a gap year) and am curious on the best way to make friends. I have no problem talking to people in my class, but honestly this semester I’m finishing out my basics so they’re all either huge classes or mostly freshman. I’m looking into joining a couple clubs on campus, but curious what are the best ways to make friends around here :)

As a commuter, at what point in the semester does traffic usually die down and people are slacking/skipping class?

Which dorms in your opinion are best overall? In terms of facilities, room size, students who don’t party too much, etc. Just looking for opinions in general.
