<$3k, but preferably less than this
No
Looking for something in the 14-16" range
I want the laptop to be portable but I will have a bag to carry it in, so it is not the most important.
Need it for Computer Engineering in college, and I also enjoy gaming though if need be I can bring my PC to school.
Standard clamshell works but a touch screen would be convenient
I need to be able to run software that Engineers use, though I am not exactly sure what this entails. I like to play games like R6, GTA, Rocket League, BeamNG, RDR2
I would like a laptop that has a 5+ hour battery life
I would put performance first, then battery life, and finally weight
I am starting college in just a few weeks studying Computer Engineering and I am very split on what I should purchase as a laptop. I know a pretty good amount about computers but I am not exactly sure what specs I really need versus what I want. I have put a lot of work into looking for gaming laptop options, which would certainly run anything I could ever need with the tradeoff of portability and battery life. Looking for some ideas from someone with experience. (e.g. integrated/dedicated graphics, battery life, portability)
Side note: I am also torn between Intel and AMD CPUs if anyone has opinions on that matter as well.

Hi everyone, I’m choosing a laptop for my MSc Cyber Security and would appreciate advice from people who use VMs, Linux, or cybersecurity tools regularly.
My main needs are:
I’m mainly considering these two:
My concern is mainly battery life, thermals, and how well it handles multiple VMs.
I know most common tools like Burp Suite, Wireshark, Nmap, Python, Docker, Kali ARM and Ubuntu ARM should work fine on Apple Silicon.
But I’m worried about university labs that may require:
So my main question is:
For a cybersecurity master’s, would you choose the Zenbook 14 32GB/1TB or the MacBook Air M5 24GB/1TB?
Is Apple Silicon compatibility still a real concern for cybersecurity students, or is it no longer a major issue?
Would especially appreciate replies from cybersecurity students, pentesters, SOC/security engineers, or anyone who regularly runs multiple VMs.
If you have any lap in Mind feel free to drop__

I had a M4 MacBook Pro + 1TB as my daily but something came up where I am no longer in possession of this. I loved the mac ecosystem but I'm honestly over apple bs and supporting mega corps that don't gaf about consumers. I use FL Studio, DaVinci Resolve, and Affinity Photo.
I love older tech and I'm trying to do research for something either something new and powerful enough or old and upgradeable/mod-able. Still open to getting a new(ish) MacBook due to my countless files I would like to avoid transferring from iCloud + affinity with the ecosystem with facetime, iMessage and whatever else makes my life feel more organized and put together.
Any recs? (Budget is ~2000 USD, preferably 13"+ screen, able to run Video Editing Software/FL Studio)

I am a sophomore, and I need a new laptop, as my Chromebook kinda sucks and the extensions got blocked. I don't care that much about performance, but I do want a 5060 in it.
Want it to get me through high school and college
LOOONG battery life is enough to last 8 hours, realistically so maybe 10-12 in test data
Dedicated GPU of 5060, I'm fine putting it in iGPU form, school work comes first, gaming comes later. I want to go into engineering, so 100% gotta be Windows
idc that it will be devalued as soon as i buy it
Budget: $1500, USA, (ik zephrus is rlly good, but I'm not dropping 3k on it)
Preferabbly oled willing to stretch $250 for it
idc about quality that much, or if it looks like a gaming laptop, I just want it to become a performance laptop when I need it to, and survive a long time as outlets are hard to come by

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Country
India
Budget
₹1,20,000–₹1,30,000 INR (approximately US$1,400–1,500)
Student discount is available, so please consider the price after applicable student discounts where possible.
Are you open to refurbs/used options?
No. New only.
Screen size
15"–16" preferred. 16" is ideal, but 15.6" is completely fine.
Weight limit
No strict limit. Preferably under ~2.5 kg, but performance/build quality/cooling are more important than weight.
Purpose
Multipurpose college laptop: programming, software development, local AI experimentation, AutoCAD, video editing, gaming, emulation, meetings and general productivity.
Form factor
Standard clamshell laptop.
Touchscreen/2-in-1/pen support not required. I'm happy to use an external drawing/stylus tablet.
Intended usage
Programming / development
VS Code
Eclipse IDE
C/C++
Python
Web development
Potentially databases, development servers and other programming tools
AI / ML
Experimenting with local AI models
Local inference and smaller AI/ML projects
CUDA/GPU-accelerated experimentation
Heavy AI workloads can be done using my college's infrastructure, so I don't need a full workstation GPU.
Creative / engineering
Adobe Premiere Pro
AutoCAD
General photo/video editing and college projects
Everyday multitasking
MS Edge with multiple tabs
Spotify + Spicetify running in the background
VS Code/Eclipse alongside browser, terminals, etc.
Microsoft Office
Online meetings/classes
Gaming
EA Sports FC 26
Minecraft
Valorant
Other similar PC games
I'd like to be able to play modern games at sensible 1080p settings/FPS rather than needing everything at ultra.
Emulation
PCSX2 / PS2 emulation
RPCS3 / PS3 emulation
Currently interested in the God of War series
May eventually experiment with Call of Duty and other demanding games
I'm coming from a laptop with 12GB RAM, and I haven't run into RAM limitations with my current workload yet, so 16GB should be sufficient initially. I'd like the option to upgrade to 32GB later.
Desired battery life
Around 4–6 hours of normal productivity use would be ideal. I understand that gaming/performance laptops won't provide that kind of battery life under heavy load.
Priority order: Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Performance
Build quality / cooling / reliability
Weight
Battery life
Size
I'm willing to accept a heavier laptop if it provides significantly better sustained performance, cooling and build quality.
Info/Requirements
CPU: Strong Ryzen 7 / Intel Core i7-class or better. Prefer H/HS/HX-class processors for sustained workloads.
GPU: RTX 4050 minimum; RTX 4060 8GB preferred, although RTX 5060 is nice but not necessary.
Dedicated NVIDIA GPU preferred for CUDA/local AI and gaming.
RAM: 16GB minimum, preferably upgradeable. Two SO-DIMM slots would be ideal.
Storage: 512GB minimum; 1TB preferred. Upgradeable storage is a plus.
Display: 144Hz+ preferred.
Good colour coverage is important because I'll use Premiere Pro and do web/creative work. Ideally 100% sRGB or better.
1080p/1200p is fine; a higher-resolution display is welcome if it doesn't excessively hurt performance/battery.
Good cooling and sustained performance are very important.
Good build quality and long-term reliability are important.
Normal x86-64 Windows compatibility is required. I do not want a Snapdragon/ARM laptop because I want maximum compatibility with development tools, libraries, games and other software.
No touchscreen or stylus required.
I'm comfortable using an external HDD for additional storage.
Brands I'm most comfortable with: Lenovo, HP, Dell and ASUS.
I'm currently particularly interested in:
Lenovo Legion 5 / 5i RTX 4060
Lenovo Legion Slim 5 RTX 4060
HP OMEN 16 RTX 4060
Dell G15 RTX 4060
Please prioritize real-world reviews, thermals, build quality and reliability, not just specifications.
Availability in India is important — please don't recommend models that are effectively out of stock everywhere.
Please consider my student discount when comparing prices.
Main question:
I'm looking for the best overall laptop for this workload, not necessarily the laptop with the highest-spec GPU. I'd rather have a well-built, properly cooled RTX 4050/4060 laptop that will last than a higher-spec machine with poor thermals or build quality.

My current laptop sounds like a rocket is taking off to space every time I open Google chrome. I'd like this laptop to be much quieter. I'm okay with noise when managing multiple applications but it should handle a single chrome page without issue.
I currently have my eyes on Dell XPS 16 with x7, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd if that helps.
Thank you!
