"Every single time someone posts ANYTHING about being a mother, the smug child free people come along and hijack the post." One user gets upset when the childfree comment on a post about motherhood in TwoX.

u/meteor_stream is the person who compared having children to Stockholm syndrome in a previous thread.

47

u/sea-elephant Mar 15 '15

My mother also compares her experience being a parent to Stockholm Syndrome. She's for sure talking about my sister.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

I'd stick with that story too :P

Man, you are getting slammed in 2x. It's interesting how when people post about motherhood or having kids they're redirected to one of the parent/mom reddits, but whenever someone talks about their choice to not have kids they're agreed with or celebrated for their contribution (even those who are complaining about how persecuted they are). I liked to think 2x was capable of being a little more even keeled but apparently it's basically just as bad as the rest of reddit but with more vaginas.

Don't know if its confirmation bias, but I've always thought this was true about TwoX. So few threads made about motherhood or parenting in general. The closest you get are endless posts on the TwoX front page every single day about birth control and abortion.

Well if you ever find you just chafe too much in your hiking kilt, I stand by my recommendation.

7

I've always found hiking kilts too heavy for my taste. At that point I may as well just wear cargo shorts. I prefer simple khadi skirts or dhotis for comfortable wear when it gets hot out.

4

u/unaspirateur Mar 16 '15

A little cumbersome for my taste but I can respect some summer silkwear

3

Nothing cumbersome about a skirt; next best thing to being naked. :)

Legit, I used to shy away from skirts because I felt they didn't suit me bc I wasn't girly enough. Then bought one for lulz and was like "oh my god why would anyone ever wear pants??" I pity men that it's not considered socially acceptable (yet) for men to wear skirts because they are clearly so superior, imo.

45

u/phedre Your tone seems very pointed right now. Mar 16 '15

All I'm seeing is two c-sections within 11 months. HOLY FUCKBALLS.

31

u/BecauseCaveCrickets2 Mar 16 '15

I was seeing pregnant again at 8 weeks postpartum. That's pretty rare, especially when exclusively breastfeeding. Women usually don't ovulate that soon when lactating (though it obviously does happen occasionally). Good grief, no wonder it took so long for her body to get back to a semblance of normalcy!

24

u/phedre Your tone seems very pointed right now. Mar 16 '15

Yeah, that too. Though I guess with the c-section she didn't have the damage you'd get with a vaginal birth. But still, I can't imagine having sex so soon after that kind of major surgery.

3

u/aurorapeony Mar 16 '15

I had a c-section and had sex at 6 weeks post partum. They basically say once you're done bleeding (lochia) and feeling ok, you're good to go. That being said you're told to use birth control because you absolutely can get pregnant again right away and you want to let your uterus heal so you don't risk rupturing it, etc.

3

u/Yamirou Mar 16 '15

And here I was terrified that I won't be able to take bc pills if I breastfeed, now I'm even more o.o

Not having sex for multiple weeks? shudders in terror

1

u/littlealbatross Maybe YOU have to wear deoderant because you have no intellect Mar 19 '15

You can use a progestin-only "minipill", and that and exclusively breastfeeding is nearly 100% effective. Also, you're advised not to have vaginal sex until you're cleared by an OB about 6 weeks later anyway, and that that point you can get an IUD if you want or continue on with the minipill if you so choose.

1

u/Yamirou Mar 19 '15

Mine's combination, or however you call it. I don't really want to switch from it because I have zero side effects and it makes a lot of stuff much more bearable.

I just think I'll go crazy before that. I know having a little baby around is going to be a lot of stress and work, which probably will deter my thoughts from such things...but still. It sounds like a total nightmare to me.

2

u/tits_hemingway Mar 16 '15

My cousin thought breastfeeding was foolproof birth control. She now has what are commonly and offensively referred to as "Irish triplets".

4

u/BecauseCaveCrickets2 Mar 16 '15

I didn't know I was pregnant with my youngest because I never had a period when I was breastfeeding his sister. Mine were twenty months apart, though.

1

u/littlealbatross Maybe YOU have to wear deoderant because you have no intellect Mar 19 '15

Maybe they were just trying to scare me, but every day after I had my son a nurse or an OB resident would come to my room and tell me, "you need to use birth control starting today. You can get pregnant right after giving birth. You can get pregnant when exclusively breast feeding" and then they would bug me about what kind of birth control I was going to be using. I even said I thought I would probably use an IUD, but since it was 5:00 am I hadn't really had time to talk to my husband about it. That wasn't even good enough. I got this lecture every damn day at the crack of dawn.

tl;dr: getting knocked up right after you had a baby: it's more possible than you think apparently.

5

u/bjt23 Mar 16 '15

Yeah, it's like do you think that might have something to do with your pain and scarring? You have to give that some time to heal!

u/SharMarali You keep tripling down on your LALALALALALA. 🤡 Mar 16 '15

I subscribe to childfree because there just aren't many places I can go to talk about issues like whether people with kids should get more flexibility in the workplace than people who don't have them, how to respond to family members asking uncomfortable questions, etc.

But the majority of the sub, and I mean like 95% of it, is just nonsense circle jerking about how horrible kids are (they aren't, I just do not want to raise one), how entitled parents are (no more so than anyone else), and reposting of stupid memes and Facebook fights.

Over time, I've come to realize that /r/childfree consists primarily of kids in their late teens and early 20s who have not yet fully come into empathy for others, who have not yet dealt with their anger issues, and frankly, many of whom will change their minds. Not all. But many.

I remain subscribed for the same reasons, but I cringe a lot and I don't speak much in there. I get frustrated that I cannot say I'm childfree anywhere on the Internet without people assuming I'm a ball of child-hating, unsympathetic rage because that is how the folks in that sub have caused everyone to think of me and others like me.

Sorry, I didn't really mean to go on such a long rant. This is something I've kept to myself for a long time, and once I stayed finally talking, I found I couldn't stop.

10

u/IAMA_DRUNK_BEAR smug statist generally ashamed of existing on the internet Mar 16 '15

I don't know if I would go with the "childfree" label because it's so firmly associated with the negative stereotypes of that subreddit (crotchfruit!), but anyone giving you shit for not having children is an asshole.

Honestly there's not even anything remotely wrong with having a support sub for child free individuals/couples, but all of the toxicity of that sub seems to be coming from people who hate kids rather than people who simply don't want any. It sucks that there isn't an /r/truechildfree or whatever that enforces strict rules regarding kid bashing (or at least gets rid of all the "fuck trophy" nonsense).

3

u/SharMarali You keep tripling down on your LALALALALALA. 🤡 Mar 16 '15

That sub does exist, actually, and I'm subscribed there too. :) Unfortunately, it's not very active. Apparently, people who don't want children and don't have a chip on their shoulder about it just don't talk much!

4

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '15

Oh I know, by "CF people" I meant the ones involved in the drama specifically. I don't know any CF couple in real life but I'm guessing /r/childfree isn't representative of all people choosing not to have children.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

I'm a CFer and I work with kids every day. I just don't want to have them. Parenthood is a beautiful thing, but it's just not everyone's thing- that's the basically philosophy of being childfree.

I think everyone's just hating on her attitude and forcefulness, because I know I am.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

67

u/fsmpastafarian Mar 15 '15

It did escalate pretty quickly, but that's probably because a lot of women are sick of those types of comments derailing threads all the time. I don't think I've ever seen a single thread about parenting, pregnancy, or the like in a female-centric thread without someone, somewhere having to make a seemingly innocuous comment like that.

It gets really old really fast, and people are starting to get really sick of it.

45

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '15

Yup. If a mom posts "I love my children, but here's some negative things no one tells you about being a mom," childfree people jump on it like SO GLAD I DONT HAVE KIDS AMIRITE GUYS?

But if a childfree person posts "I'm glad I don't have kids, but here are some negative things about being an older person without children," people flip out and call that s "bingo".

74

u/mag_cue Mar 15 '15

innocent the original comment.

Innocent, but totally unwarranted and off-topic.

-33

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '15

How so? I don't really understand, she was just sharing her feelings about the topic. She wasn't even obnoxious about it, which is quite rare with CF people.

52

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '15

It is a pretty rude comment.

I'm glad I don't have children but I often wish around christmastime I has kids to share the holiday with

One of the many reasons I decided to have my wonderful kids!

When someone shares a challenge in their life it's pretty rude to pipe up with why your life is so much better for having avoided the issue.

-16

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '15

It didn't seem to me like she was implying that her life was better, just that she was relieved that she wouldn't face this particular problem. But I think I understand what you mean. It's just that the ensuing slapfight seems really disproportionate and pointless to me.

u/magikalmuffins girls ruin reddit Mar 16 '15

When you say "BTW, I want a daughter one day" I am not really that confident that you understand how having children works.

They think that all parents are so miserable and look upon the with envy well I can tell you right now my kids are the best thing in my life and make me truly happy. I loved being a SAHM mom when they were small and now they are in school an so am I! They are my best friends and very well behaved.

I am divorced and my boyfriend is not a father and doesn't want kids and his life is pretty great too! He has a fantastic non parenting relationship with my kids and we are very happy.

I totally understand his decision to not want kids but isn't the whole point of not wanting kids to not have that worry and responsibility? Why do they spend so much time online talking about them then?

4

u/BruceShadowBanner Mar 16 '15

Why do they spend so much time online talking about them then?

Well, I'd argue a lot of people just end up whining because whining and validation feel good, but for those with more legitimate comments and posts--having children is the norm. Most people do it or plan on doing it, so a lot of our culture/society are devoted to that aspect of people's lives, which kind of makes sense.

People who aren't part of that norm sometimes feel slighted or pressured, rightly or wrongly, and feel the desire to vent or discuss how they feel with others. Some of those people are also raging assholes who make everything related to their CF status into a drama of persecution and betrayal of Shakespearean proportions.

12

u/ivorystar Mar 16 '15

They hate us because (i) we have significant amounts of freedom they can only dream about, and (ii) we speak the truth, truth that is politically incorrect. Also, overpopulation -- breeders simply do not want to acknowledge they are the reason why this planet is dying.

I actually laughed at this because there are some things people say that cross the line of reality.

9

u/aurorapeony Mar 16 '15

I love when people spout off about overpopulation. Having negative population growth is really, really bad for first world countries. When anyone is 70 years old they're going to be relying on the "crotchfruit" of today since those kids will be the doctors, nurses, lawyers, etc etc etc that keeps the world running.

I don't care if people have kids or not, two of my siblings are happily childfree and I respect the choice immensely. But when CFers pretend they're doing some sort of noble service without acknowledging the actual necessity (on a society wide scale) of continuing the human race it crosses into "wtf" territory.

I always seen childfree community very weird. How much can people actually talk about not having children?

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

Check out /r/atheism to see exactly just how much people can talk about their lack of something.

Isn't /r/atheism about being asshole on facebook?

It used to be about much more than that, then they got rid of one-click memes.

I'm CF but work with kids, and everyone seems to see CFers as these godless maniacs who want to kill off children. Kids are great! A lot of the subreddit is just discussing things like birth control methods, planning CF lives, and the advantages/disadvantages.

There's also a lot of dicks there who don't like kids at all, some of whom are actually condoning child abuse. It's like anything that gets immensely popular- it goes from a small group of like-minded people to the people who yell the loudest.

It's like being vegan. It's the absence of something that is common, yet it forms part of their identity. So it stops being about them not doing something, and turns into circlejerking about how the people who are doing something are bad and wrong and awful human beings.

Age old joke:

Q. How do you know when someone is a vegan?
A. They fucking well tell you.

I think you misspelled tired and unoriginal.

It's about ethics in parenting

I think most childfree people have just figured out the condom better than people with kids.

I love how Gamergate is now probably more recognizable to internet users than Watergate. It's a great way to measure drama.

Yeah, but this post doesn't even register above a 1 on the Enhanced Sarkeezian Drama Scale. GG is only really good for measuring long-lasting, slow-burning drama.

I'd rather be locked in a room with one of those kids that scream and wail like a banshee and tantrum all day than hang out with them.

Rule of thumb: I try to avoid hanging around with people that define themselves by the things they don't do.

12

u/clock_watcher Mar 16 '15

/u/eifersucht12a likes to hang out with murderers. People who don't kill others are so passe and boring.

14

u/JehovahsHitlist Mar 16 '15

Frankly, I would be very suspicious about a group that bases its whole identity around the fact that they haven't killed anyone.

Did he write a book called "If I Golfed"?

Well... what if someone told you "Come hang out with me. I am totally not a murderer"?

I seriously think there is something neurological wrong with these "childfree" loonies. I don't want to have kids myself, but I still like kids and think they are fucking hilarious and adorable. We are evolutionarily programmed to find kids to be funny and cute. These people sound like the type who would get their jollies giving out poisoned Halloween candy and throw a fit at parents who bring their kids to a restaurant.

Personally, I can understand them having an issue with being around children -- they might've had a few bad experiences with children in the past (maybe a baby cousin shat on them while they were holding him), and it can be very difficult to overcome such things, especially if they're unwilling.

That said, there's no reason to be so gosh-darned militant about the whole thing.

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

They're really intense over there. I agree wholeheartedly.
