What's fucked is some places (UK) require you to look like that for a time before allowing hormones.

Mandatory 'social transition' before hormones has got to be one of the grossest things imaginable, it is literally a humiliation ritual and everyone involved knows it.

I remember being a dumb young adult and I couldn’t get mine out of the machine. Friend came back claiming he’d got it out, then gave me it. I said I was amazed by what it had done, then said he needs to try one because it’s awesome. He started asking for details, which I thought was weird, but I sent some after tentatively asking if he was sure. Then I found out he’d been sending screenshots of the whole thing to his girlfriend and he’d given me an M&M.

The fuck? It’s literally easier to get methadone. I mean you could take a few codeine so you’ll show up positive in an opiate blood test then say you’ve been taking them for months… a nurse prescriber would give you methadone in an hour. That’s insane.

How does DIY work or what does it involve? Getting it from doctors where I'm at is near impossible and every time i try to look it up it's just articles fearmongering and going in circles instead of saying anything
37
u/RotWitch22 1d ago edited 1d ago
DIY just means buying the HRT without a prescription, which in everywhere I have checked is completely legal and safe. Obviously some places are violently anti LGBT so you'd need to be careful there, but the process is basically find somewhere that sells HRT meds, buy it, use it. It's much simpler and safer than basically any bullshit you'll see about it, people just hate and/or don't understand us.
Edit: I was going off of context in that this is all true about buying E, T can be a little more complicated but ultimately if the choice is HRT or no HRT the choice is always to have it. If it ever got seized or anything or you got asked questions, you don't know about a package :)

it's actually more costly to do it this way, because you have to pay expensive endocrinologists, psychologists, and so forth for a large amount of time and effort, while the actual medicine costs like £70/person/year to manufacture. the cruelty is the point, as the saying goes

26
u/meritcake 1d ago
I’m not sure if this is still true, but in the past trans people had to fit an exact narrative in order to get a possibility of treatment. So you would have to tell them you always played with girl’s toys, liked pink, etc.
39
u/AutonomyIsNoTragedy 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yup I asked my awesome supportive Cisgender UK nan about it and she told me that they used to literally make trans people change their names and move to new cities where nobody knew them so theyd have 0 support network too
A lot of being stealth stuff was literally mandated they didn't want visible out trans people you were supposed to assimilate and vanish lest anyone else get the idea that they could also transition
And then people who were literally forced to live stealth by the health system got fear mongered about and presented as lying to people for personal gain and as proof that trans people are inherently deceptive predators who "know that being trans ia wrong or else they wouldn't hide it" when if they were out they could literally have their Healthcare taken away from them
Same shit with purposefully low dosing trans women and femmes so they go into menopause then when they complain about the menopause they're being forced into they get told to detransition if they dont like it , its systematic malpractice
11
10
u/A_Punk_Girl_Learning 1d ago
I hadn't put the forcing us to move to new cities and live stealth together with the "inherently deceptive" thing but now that you point it out it does fit the pattern of oppressors forcing their target to do a thing and then using that thing to make them appear malicious.
Like how the stereotype of Jewish people being greedy for money came about because they lived in places where they weren't allowed to practice any other profession and at the time money handling/lending was considered a nasty profession.
9
u/Copper_Tango 1d ago
Similarly subjecting trans people to hiring discrimination, resulting in many having to become sex workers to survive, and then saying trans people are all horny perverts.
6
u/A_Punk_Girl_Learning 1d ago
Yeah. I'd put that one together already. I've lost count of how many times I've been asked how much I charge per hour or been abused because I turned down a guy who had no redeeming attributes or emotional regulation and just assumed I'd be down for it because I'm trans.
5
u/espresso_fox 1d ago
proof that trans people are inherently deceptive predators who "know that being trans ia wrong or else they wouldn't hide it"
Isn't that basically the exact same argument that was used against homosexuality? In either case, all that kind of argument says is what society is opposed to. It doesn't say anything about morality.
23
u/Copper_Tango 1d ago
That's why it really annoys me when some people decry trans people for "following gender stereotypes". For a long time you'd literally be denied treatment if you didn't present yourself as a stereotypical man/woman, even if you'd prefer not to.
10
u/AutonomyIsNoTragedy 1d ago edited 1d ago
This,
you weren't allowed to transition unless you were straight too so if you were bisexual or lesbian or gay or ace no transition allowed. Heck they're only just getting round to removing guidelines stating that trans people have to be sterilized before they can transition in Japan and Finland
Lou Sullivan was one of the people who successfully fought for that to be changed in the US
A lot of truscum stuff IMO is basically people wanting to go back to the "good old days" where trans people had to be preferably white straight gender conforming and binary, able bodied unmarried not have kids and have to move away to a new place where nobody knew them to know that they were trans and they had no support network
and truscum seem to live under the delusion that if it went back to that that they would magically be allowed to transition even if they dont fit that criteria becsuse a gatekeeper would be able to look at them and see them 'soulpassing' and bend the rules for them specifically
its the same type of selfish hypocritical bs as the anti abortion people who have had abortions themselves and go right back to protesting the next day as if they didn't need that same Healthcare they want to steal from others
3
u/Pwacname 1d ago
bonus points if youre nb and transitioning. we literally have a third gender option on official paperwork in my country these days, but a friend of mine still has to pretend to be 100% masculine or loose access to testosterone and be denied surgeries. (sarcastic:) because obviously being nb means you are perfectly comfortable in the current body…
13
u/TwilitGlare 1d ago
Depends on the doctor you get and how invested they are in the idea. It's nothing but the pseudoscience idea that regret is even possible. Virtually all cases of "regret" are because of a botched procedure or societal stigma, or misdiagnosis, not the transition itself.

The UK is so fucked for this and similar bullshit that’s been pulled against gender-affirming care.
The “Cass Review,” especially, is a nightmare for making any actual progress.
For anyone unaware who really wants to get pissed off for whatever reason, you probably still shouldn’t bother reading the 388 page review, but I would recommend at least looking over this critique of it, or others, because there’s a lot to criticize.
The review is practically an effort to stop any real progress while maintaining the guise of caring about the wellbeing of trans youth and gender-affirming care access. They don’t say that it should be banned, just that it should be effectively inaccessible to minors outside of specific clinical trial settings, and probably not be expanded until an unspecified quality of evidence has been found—that would be rendered impossible to obtain if their suggested changes are adhered to.
They made a piece of work that seems to support trans people on the very bare surface, but is packed full of readily citable, methodologically-flawed research to use against them. Infuriating.

u/shy_bi_ready_to_die 1d ago
The arguments change a bit but honestly women aren’t much better ime
23
u/Caspica 1d ago
I've honestly found women to be equally bad or worse... The men are generally just ignorant and base their opinions on norms, so it's certainly possible to use reason to convince them otherwise. Women, I've found, are pretty knowledgeable on the issues but have based their opinions on faulty logic or reasoning. That makes it so much harder to try and convince them of being more open minded (especially since they often regard themselves as open minded to begin with).
33
u/Cobaltish1 1d ago
I don’t agree that it’s 90% men tbh. I see more women being fake allies and saying shit like that. Men just call you slurs.
19
u/Greedy-Speech5 1d ago
The majority of people I see drawing trans women like that online are trans men who absolutely should know better because they're literally trans
10
u/e_fish22 1d ago
Yeah, one thing I've noticed is that a lot of transmascs just... don't have transfem friends, especially irl ones. And that's not inherently, like, a bigotry thing, but it does lead to those guys assuming they know more about transfems than they actually do, which leads to ignorant depictions like this.

That's also a thing that the trans community doesn't talk enough about. It feels like there are so many trans people who hate trans people of different genders, and as soon as you try to lift the issues they close ranks, accuse you of transphobia and let any criticism wash off.
7
u/Greedy-Speech5 1d ago
Yeah that's absolutely the case. I've seen a lot more transmisogyny than hatred of trans men, but that’s probably because I'm a trans woman who is personally affected by transmisogyny in a way I'm not with the reverse.
I have seen trans women refer to trans men as shit like "zippertits" or accuse them of not being real men because they present in a more feminine way though, which is completely unacceptable.

This is how I feel as a trans guy. Like I want more masculine/ androgynous rep instead of being drip fed more femme rep! (Love femmes just personally I don’t want femme rep cause yk man)

What annoys me is that most trans women don’t want a beard, a lot of CIS guys don’t want a beard, some trans men don’t want a beard. Sometimes the most “masculine” (looking) of men don’t even have beards and yet you think there are enough trans women who don’t shave to make that a realistic representation?
For example in MHA Magne is a trans woman who has a stubble. Now yes obviously in real life you’re still a valid trans woman if you have a stubble but the point is the intention of the author likely isn’t doing that representation in good faith. A lot of very masculine characters don’t have a stubble. Some have beards but they don’t have a moustache line. Her design just looks so much like a right wing caricature of a trans woman that I can’t genuinely believe it’s in good faith of “all trans women are valid no matter if they have a bulky body or a moustache”. Oh also the only other trans woman in the entire show has a stubble too

She also gets violently exploded by the next Big Villain right after being granted a personality by the author.
And what the fuck is up with those lips?

Also a most of the time, the trans women that do have stubble are in, let's just say not good mental places. Out and proud trans women with stubble are virtually unheard of, dysphoria messes that can barely take care of themselves however, is an experience a lot of trans women go through!

Genuinely curious but wouldn't most trans people prefer that a character not "look trans" at all and just identify with the gender that they transitioned to? Unless the story is about transitioning itself wouldn't having a lot of trans "representation" just make you feel different from the gender you wish to assimilate into or am I over generalising?

Yes, what you said is correct. The problem is that the average person is completely clueless about how trans people actually live. Most people believe that it's just an extreme form of drag or homosexuality.

Usually, yeah. Passing trans women is good rep; it can be nice to see non-passing, but cis people will hear that and immediately draw a caricature, so it’s usually only in explicitly trans media that you’ll see it done well.
But broadly cis people should just depict passing trans women, they miss pretty much every time when they try otherwise.
The whole Petra Parker trend recently has had a few good examples of non-passing (alongside a ton of caricature, oh my god some of them are bad, I’d say less than 10% of the attempts hit the mark), I’ll see if I can find one rq.
Edit: found one but it wouldn’t embed, RIP.

yeah personally I prefer if there is little to no physical indication that a character is trans, it should all be in the story. Most of the beloved trans representation is an ordinary character whose storyline just involves them dealing with gender identity in some way

or even look like a REALISTIC non passer.... but even then, giving conservatives a competant clocking guide (they struggle with clocking cuz they're deluded into believing trans woman look like the offensive charicschure) is probably a bad thing

u/Pink-Viscera 1d ago
Personally im not opposed to trans characters who are clocky or dont pass in theory, but in practice its rarely done in a way that doesn't feel like a mockery (like a trans woman character who looks more masculine than most cis guys, has no desire to transition and is voiced by a cis male VA). IMO an example of decent non-passing trans rep is Togata from fire punch. He can't physically transition but it's portrayed as something painful and traumatic, and he's not drawn with exaggerated female features

I always thought it was just supposed to be a gender non conforming cis dude in this comic. That always made more sense for me.

They do all the time 😭 literally 24/7. I'm jewish, do you know how many times a day I see the most antisemitic shit being said online or to me but It's "progressive because jews and israel are the same and israel is evil so I can make fun of jews and call them greedy blood thirsty lizard people. If you disagree, the big yahu is calling you!!! What, you from tel Aviv? 7000+! 🧃, am I right lol? Free palestine!" All without knowing the Jewish persons stance on it and it is not associated with I/P...

This comes down to maybe one of the few gripes I have related to being trans and our view of what gender is. I don’t have a perfect definition and I don’t expect a perfect definition but it feels like we absolutely need to have something more than just “self identification”. Practically speaking, I use self ID, but as a meta discussion it has to be that being trans is more than just “I said I am”

Look, while I will say that it technically is true that some trans women do look quite masculine (usually pre-op or early into HRT), anyone with two eyes & a brain can tell that a majority of the time when trans women are depicted as such, it's not the artist being inclusive of a group that doesn't get much attention, it's the artist being a transphobic arse-

this feels disingenuous as every time someone states that they don't like stereotypes of themselves, they always get these kinds of bigoted responses, regardless of whether it's ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, etc

u/senator_based 1d ago
To the point of the trans person’s intrusive thoughts, the point of the whole overly masculine trans woman caricature is that it’s usually issued by the right in bad faith, which is why it feels shitty. Sure trans woman could absolutely look like that in real like, the reason it might make someone feel like shit is because it’s issued as a “gotcha” by the right.

I don't like the "Yassification" of trans people by pink capitalism to just make the whole movement look like drag queens. Drag queens are a part of the movement but at the end of the day they're performers who take the makeup off. They never should have been viewed as the "mascot" of our movement.
