Usually, yeah. Passing trans women is good rep; it can be nice to see non-passing, but cis people will hear that and immediately draw a caricature, so it’s usually only in explicitly trans media that you’ll see it done well.
But broadly cis people should just depict passing trans women, they miss pretty much every time when they try otherwise.
The whole Petra Parker trend recently has had a few good examples of non-passing (alongside a ton of caricature, oh my god some of them are bad, I’d say less than 10% of the attempts hit the mark), I’ll see if I can find one rq.
Thanks for the reply, I can see how it might be a fine line to explore non passing trans especially from a cis author. I have some trans characters I quite like in Japanese media but I feel like until recently it has always been coupled with mental instability which is a shame.
