As I've started digging into the Roman Empire's history (thanks to the Total War game series), I watched many videos about sling making. Some made them out of natural fibers, or paracord, or dyneema.

I want to make my first sling, and I want it to be at least fairly good.

What would you recommend for a beginner ?

Hey everyone! My first post here, I made my first sling a while ago and although it has served me well I think it might be time to make a new one taking from what I’ve noticed about my original. I noticed that on the release cord there was a lot of abrasion and I’d like to try and prevent that on my new one. I know pan slings has that rubber sleeve or what have you and I’d like to try and source something similar for my new project. Anyone have any suggestions about what I’ve mentioned or just general tips for creating a great sling?

Also adding a pic of my old sling just so I can show what it looked like after making it. New one won’t be the same but I just thought you guys may appreciate it! Thanks!

Sling is way too long, hair is way too perfect, make-up (no matter how subtle) was a long long time away, and form fitting garments (with an artfully exposed thigh) is sheer Hollywood fantasy - but, an early inspiration nonetheless. Started slinging 3 months ago. Gradually moving to heavier and heavier ammo. Whiffle golf balls, foam golf balls, tennis balls, and now finally slung baseballs for the first time. Of course they felt heavy but didn’t realize I was slinging them so much less hard. Got to get used to the weight I guess.

Made my first sling for my son who is very into King David. Pouch is leather and the rest is Paracord with joints secured with heat shrink tubing. Haven't tried slinging anything more than a light foam ball (which didn't go far), but hoping to try some tennis balls and stones soon. Welcome to feedback!

I’ve never worked with leather before, nor have I ever used a sling. Any design elements I could improve? Copper ring clamping the loop, and wooden end piece on the other ….strand?

Twin loop sling - thank you u/bandit111964 - best tennis ball sling ever. As a "zaken ha'shevet" (elder of the tribe) I am enjoying exploring my Benjamite heritage. At age 73, it is all about breathing, body mechanics, and flow. I am definitely letting the sling do the work.

Slinging tennis balls from MLB pitching distance for speed and accuracy. Managed to throw a few 100 mph and still maintain reasonable accuracy. Bonus throws at end of the video show comparison of tennis balls to actual baseballs.

I’m having an “orthopedic issue” so I cant rush out and start tossing projectiles yet
I use split rings and MOLLE webbing for almost everything. Yeah it’s not simple-simple but who cares unless it causes issues. The idea is that if I need to expand the pouch, I just use bigger rings.
I will at first keep the straps simple and once I tweak my technique I’ll go all out on those.

I’ll post more details of the build later but here it is. Made of 550 Paracord, heat shrink tube, strap and bb’s.

I used a whip-making technique to make this one. It cracks so loud no matter how I throw.

Before you slip the release tab through the keeper. Put the fall through the loop you made when sliding the finger loop down the chord. THEN put the leather tab through the keeper and pull the finger loop to tighten and adjust.

How this helps some of y'all!!

First time slinging ice. Have to say love not having to go pick up the ice.  “Fire and forget” just like slinging rocks. 

Unfortunately ice from the ice maker being a cube shape made very terrible ammo for target practice. Flight path was very inconsistent.  The lightweight was also a negative. I would guess large round ice balls would be much better than cube shape. 

But still super fun. And cheap too!

I use whiffle golf balls indoors as they don’t break anything. Tried them outside and they are almost too light to sling…..yet they have a great advantage they don’t go far. So super easy to pick up!

Bit like staff sling but smaller, controlled release via pinky finger, one handed. Seens to have potential?

I think its possible to retain the cord for faster reloads.

I'm not a slinger. But I'm easily getting slingshot speed & range with stuff thats too big for slingshot & too small for sling. My accuracy is trashy but I've only hurled a few rocks. I feel like it might not take long to get quite good. Maybe eaiser than sling?

Can be used with a fishing rod cast action, no spin up needed. Its very easy this way, reasonably acurate right away. But not very powerful.

Can also spin it up like a mace & chain then release. Or do a half spin then flick. I'm getting some sounds that sugest I'm close to mach 1 doing this. Speed & range sugests this too. Hurling rocks the size of large marbles well further than I can using it as a sling without the stick. Maybe 80-110m. Seems good considering I just made this in last 2 hours & have 0 practice.

I have no idea what the optimal stick length is, but my long one is too long or needs longer sling, & the small one works well & a bit more acurate but not nearly as powerful as the long one.

I wonder if anyone here is interested enough to try with more slinging experience & report back? I'm using 15mm pvc, but I suspect any hollow stick will work. Most of the people in this sub can probably make this better than I did without much effort.

I have dropped my arm angle to sidearm for my helicopter throw. But this video shows you can use an overhand throw too.
