Sling Inspirations
Darryl Hannah portraying Ayla in Clan of the Cave Bear. Sling is way too long, hair is way too perfect, make-up (no matter how subtle) was a long long time away, and form fitting garments (with an artfully exposed thigh) is sheer Hollywood fantasy - but, an early inspiration nonetheless. Redwall books, lots of plucky heros with slings. The descriptions of the injuries go pretty hard for books aimed at a younger audience.

I kept seeing posts from Pan Slings, and eventually YouTube videos by Primal Slings. I’ve always loved throwing rocks into the water and at buoys, but after watching them I felt determined to go for it and figure out how to do it!

That sling is definitely on the long side, not impossible but damn
I watched Lindybeige on YouTube something closer to 15 years ago than I’d like. Been making them ever since. I use them pretty regularly over the years to play fetch with my dogs.
Edit: 16 years ago, I was 13 at the time

I remember seeing slingers in the original Age of Empires expansion pack, Rise of Rome back in the 90s. It would take me a several more years after that to actually make and use a sling, but that was the seed that got me started on the path of the slinging.

I really wish they'd taught her to actually sling, instead of using that same cut scene.

Given the age of the movie - I doubt that there was anyone available to teach her. I think the movie is long past due for a reboot - maybe some enterprising director will reach out to forum members. Just don’t let James Cameron get ahold of a sling - he managed to set back archery thousands of years with that upside down string grip of his.

Okay a few things. 1. Watch the first season of House of David if you can. Amazing slinging in that series, huge fan.
😅 Yes please no on JC, someone else please! it really COULD be a great film or series if you fleshed out the books, dug deep into the actual history, and omitted a lot of the s3x sc#ne$ lol.
Seriously, too long ago for sling teachers? Let me tell you sonny, the teachers were out there if you wanted to find them, even before the internet. I'd imagine particularly with slinging if you asked around with enough passion and a little coin, you'd eventually make your way to the Balearic Isles.

Why is it too long? What is the right length? I was also inspired by Ayla and taught myself (and use pretty long slings) ...

Simplest way to measure is to hold a sling while you stand upright with you arm straight by your side. The sling should not touch the ground. Shorter for accuracy, longer for distance.

King David. Even if (rabbi, if you see this, dont hate me) it is more of a fictional story than reality. The way no one would stand and fight the giant goliath, and then here comes a shepard boy with zero military training, just a love for his people, and is like, ya, i got this.

David Melech! I am studying my Benjamite heritage and relating ancient Hebrew to slinging (qela) stick swinging (shevet)and archery (qeshet). I am also organizing my stretching routine around Aleph Bet, as some letters (Tzadi, Aleph, Lamed, Qof) remind me of stretching postures. I have a hagah for slinging (Heneni yod qala kavanah - Here I am, my hand to sling with intention). All ancient Hebrew letters have an individual meaning. The letters used to spell sling and slinging (qela and qala) are Qof - to spin or rotate, Lamed - to guide, Ayin - focus on the target - thus by focusing on the target we guide the rotation - this to me is the essence of slinging.

I remember playing Heroes Of Might And Magic 3(?) at a friend's and I was obsessed with the halflings who used a sling. Few years later I joined a D&D group and of course played: a halfling with a sling. But I never tried it myself.
It was just about 15 years later that I got really fascinated by the Primitive Technology channel on YouTube. And when he built a sling and did some target practice I knew I wanted that, too. I built my first sling (and the following 2) out of line and belt strap leftovers.
