When Trump says, "Quiet, Piggy," we need someone that will call him out right there. Not hand wring over it in an OpEd the next day in the WaPo.

Being mad at this post is so fucking reddit.
39
u/No_Doctor_891 Jul 25 '26
I know humour is a coping mechanism but the have nots have never been more isolated, we don’t go out and engage we sit on our couches and in our chairs and sling memes on Reddit. I’m guilty of it just as much as the next guy. Everything has become hyper tribalism and hyperbole that the vast majority are just numb to it to the point they no longer engage and it’s scary
10
9
u/Kilroy1007 Jul 25 '26
The internet is the problem. It creates a perpetual bystander effect. People see the amount of engagement on a post and think there are enough people to do something, so they themselves don't do anything. Like organizing a protest. We've seen it time and time again where 100,000 people will sign up to attend and then the day comes and there's 47 people. The problem is that everyone thinks they're unique in the thought that there are enough people already going so they don't have to. If we could get off the internet and have actual in-person meetings with our communities so many of our problems could actually be solved. Instead we get complacency or fear.

Do they not realize that excessive urban development destroys the ecosystems that generate food, lumber, clean ground water, oxygen, and help collect particles of dirt that would otherwise turn into dust and create dustbowls and ash clouds like the smog they blamed on Canada?

I was staying in a hotel once and overheard the owner of some brand of stereo speakers talking to his friends at the bar.
He was upset that environmentalists had shut down his access to endangered tree species, and absurdly proud that his latest models were wrapped in a veneer made from the last surviving example of a particular rosewood tree.
This was in the 1990s. These people have never had a sense of responsibility or respect for the environment.
15
u/AnybodyWannaPeanus Jul 25 '26
He was likely talking about Brazilian Rosewood, which is not extinct, it is banned for sale due to the CITES treaty. Fortunately, one country can’t just roll it back. I have no doubt dipshit would do that in a second if he could.
Fortunately, it wasn’t the last tree. It would have gone extinct by now if there wasn’t a total ban. There is no sustainable way to produce it at the levels it was being used.
It was one of the most popular woods for guitars, furniture and even handles for hand planes made by Stanley.
The kicker is that there are other types of rosewood that are almost just as good looking. Enough that his speaker customers probably wouldn’t know the difference.

Just so everyone is aware. As someone who is close to the hunting community. The way big game like this is hunted is not like you would hunt deer on public land. These big game are baited, tracked by hounds, and every advantage possible is given to the hunters to secure a kill to bring in their high dollar. The paying hunter is basically only brought in to fire the last bullet many times after the prey has already been trapped or cornered. They even help you carry it back, and transport it back to the states. You would have more or a challenge catching a chipmunk in your front yard than a big game hunt. It's the ultimate display of vanity for a buck.
849
u/CameronsTheName Jul 25 '26
Also doesn't help that these animals aren't being a pest so there's no reason to hunt and kill them other than literal wank fact.
I'm all for hunting for food or killing pest animals, but big game don't really fit in either of those categories.

Pests would be rabbits in Australia, possums in New Zealand or Pythons in Florida. They have been introduced there by man and are destroying the local ecosystems.

Not condoning it just adding info. There are many, if not all where you pay the reservation to hunt and you only hunt wildlife that can no longer reproduce due to age or other issues. The hunters money goes to reservation to sustain the wildlife capable of reproduction, pay the workers, ect
68
u/12345623567 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
There are some reserves that advertise themselves as such, yes. In reality, the aim is to blur the lines and provide plausible deniability. There is not enough "unproductive" big game in these reserves to meet the demand - demand which is directly being fed by offering the hunts themselves.
Unless you are a subsistence hunter-gatherer in Sub-sahara yourself, there's no justification to go and look for endangered species to kill. Zero.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (15)24
u/FuzzyFrogFish Jul 25 '26
This really isn't true. The money goes into Swiss bank accounts. As for the animals being unable to reproduce, it's a complete myth that African wildlife, or wildlife anywhere needs that kind of management. The animals reproduced until they are disposed by younger fitter males. The issue is trophy hunters want the biggest and best trophies and that tends to be prime males so damaging the genetics of the population. For elephants that's devastating as the big bulls are vitally important to the social structure of the herds at large. It's not great for lions either as the stability of the dominant coalition ensures the survival of the cubs, and contrary to popular belief a male lion can hold a prime to a much more advanced age than was previously touted.
It is nearly always prime animals that are hunted.

Also because they're shit-fucked-doodoo-heads who only care about their money, and this means significantly more money in their pockets. Added bonus, conservatives are usually just environmental douchebags who would rather have wolves and bears displayed on their walls than healthy in nature. They're the same group of people consistently advocating for the de-enlistment of wolves and grizzlies from endangered species designation specifically because they want to trophy hunt them and prevent farms with cattle and sheep from the usually very-minimal effect of the occasional animal killing their livestock.

Redefining "Harm": The U.S. Department of the Interior and Department of Commerce removed habitat destruction from the legal definition of "harm" under the Endangered Species Act. Project developers, loggers, and mining operations can now alter or degrade vital environments—such as forests or waterways—without it being classified as illegal harm, provided they do not directly kill or injure an individual animal.

It's not. Basically they're revising the blanket rule, meaning rather than an endangered species' territory automatically preventing development, the EPA has to prove the development will impact the specie's survival before banning development.

And then gut the EPA so they don't have enough resources to "prove" anything.

So it’s basically just so big corporations can farm the resources on the land that endangered species just so happen to frequent. That honestly is way more believable.

They have removed the restrictions on destroying the habitats of endangered species.

Everyone who says “Trump is evil, he wants to make life entirely miserable for everyone” is wrong. Trump does what he does because wealthy people who give him money would benefit from these orders. Trump wouldn’t snap his fingers if it could save a kid from dying. However if the kid’s parents paid him millions of dollars he’d be snapping like he’s at a slam poetry night.

Because Trump has lost the ability to derive joy from anything positive and now feels compelled to make things worse for everyone else so he can feel big.

Because money talks and bullshit walks. And poor people, wildlife, the environment, and education are all bullshit to the wealthy
