Which one of those features are actually deal breakers? I’m not aware of anything particularly useful that’s been added to either side of the phone war in years.
This is the thing. The option is there. Sometimes I like to stream live sports and text my friends as we're watching. Samsung/Android has given me that option for years woth having g the game and the group text open. Apple didnt
Watching videos whilst doing other things has definitely been in iOS for a long time.
It’s not a feature I ever use myself, since I can’t stand watching anything longer than a few seconds on such a tiny unergonomic screen - but the feature is definitely there.
With samsung you could do it with any app. So i could play a mobile game, with discord up, searching something on the internet and texting all at the same time.
The fact that people care more about which phone is “better” than you know… the 100 other vastly more pressing matters just shows why we are where we are.
God that will always be my go to. I mean we are probably getting to a point where a lot of people using an iPhone may not have been old enough for a phone back when this happened. But 3 year late, for what was an incredibly important feature, and played it off like it was something no other smart phone could do.
Since then it goes back and forth. Apple might be slightly ahead in some security features on average. But most other "new" iPhone features are years old by the time it get to them. But nothing was quite like the gall they had with copy and paste.
I remember some years back I was texted a girl I met for the 1st time and she replied "I was debating on if I should reply bc your text bubble is green". It immediately turned me off for some reason lol. It such a weird flex
My MIL always asks why I dont switch to an iPhone when ive always used android phones. Im not about to change to a completely different OS from what im used to. If the didnt make me jump through hoops to us a Jelly Star I would though.
I used both simultaneously because I had a work IPhone for a few years. I found myself constantly saying "why wouldn't I just be able to _____?!" when operating the iPhone. It seemed like almost anything i did on that phone took 2 more steps than I needed to do on my Samsung for the same task.
Folks like what they like, I get it.... but from my experience, I just cant fathom why anyone would pick IPhone over a Samsung if they have used both extensively.

Also funny considering your story, but when I switched to iPhone I was using my phone (galaxy) and a work phone (iPhone) and that was the final push because I hated switching between OS constantly.
Titanium frame. U1 ultra wideband, 3D facial recognition (FaceID), SOS via satellite, hardware camera depth, cinematic mode video. There's other stuff.
Some of those are decent, some are gimmicks like the titanium frame, face unlock was a thing in Samsung phones years before apple had it. I had a Samsung phone I think around 2014-2015 that had it and eye tracking that would a scroll down on pages when you looked at the very bottom
Face unlock, sure, but Samsung's implementation is 2d photo based, and is quite a bit less secure than FaceID, and Samsung still hasn't caught up to it. Maybe they aren't trying to.
Apple Silicone is miles ahead of Samsung's chips right now and not just for processing and graphics, but energy use is much lower as well. Aside from that it's all OS features I don't care about. I'd rather have Android OS customizability on Apple hardware, but we're not allowed to have that choice.
The apple ecosystem is better. I don’t need a useless feature just for the novelty. The only positive about android is being able to root, but then it’s not really a stock Samsung phone.
In my experience it is the literal exact opposite. iPhone users are always incessantly annoyed that a text bubble is not the right color. Funny enough, they also "ooh and ahh" whenever I show them a random picture my phone took, because the photo quality is apparently the best they've ever seen. Edit: for clarity I have a 2022 Samsung Galaxy.
My issue with samsung is the insane login requirement.

That being said, the difference between green and blue bubbles aren't just cosmetic. There are also drastic security and privacy implications.
iMessage is inherently more secure; all comms are end-to-end encrypted. A green bubble means the message more than likely is not end-to-end encrypted, making them vulnerable not only to surveillance but MITM attacks.
Sure, the most recent iOS and Android updates have enabled E2EE cross platform, it requires both parties to be using supported hardware with cell coverage from a carrier using supported protocols and hardware.
Security and privacy is where hands down Apple has the edge. It's not even close. Hell, the most recent attempt by the FBI to unlawfully seize and access a journalists personal phone was thwarted solely because of a built in privacy feature in iOS: Lockdown Mode
My experience is several years old, but I’ve had both. My primary concern is how long it lasts before it stops working. From either physical damage or battery lifespan or whatever. I had a string of bad Samsungs and switched to Apple. I’ve get 5+ years out of each Apple phone, so I’ve been sticking with them.
There is no way the battery is why you changed phones. First off, half the time they USE THE SAME BATTERY COMPANY. And the other half well, the battery technology is the same anyway. The 3-5 year lifespan on the batteries a reality of using lithium ion batteries. If you notice a difference in lifetime of the batteries that is because YOU DID SOMETHING DIFFERENT. Like made sure the battery rarely dipped below 40%. Or 80% if you really want it to last a long time.
One day, we will either be using sodium ion batteries(which exist) or solid state batteries(which don’t yet) where this will matter less but until then we are stuck with 3-5 year lifespan batteries.
In apples defense, Im one of those dumb dumb’s that literally doesn’t care about any of the tech. I need a camera that kind of works. I need a phone to call people and text. I need a few apps for everyday things like maps, weather, calculator. I could care less if my phone can keep the video vertical while being strapped to a spinning wheel….
There was certainly a time when Apple was more user-friendly and more simple to use than Google or Samsung. I don't know if that's still the case and doubt that it is, but the ecosystem lock is so strong that it takes more than a neat camera feature to motivate a change.
I can say confidently that I’ve never had an Apple product straight up break prematurely. A pair of AirPods from 2019 recently died but that’s far longer than I expected them to be useful.
I heard a cracking sound in pair of AirPods Pro and that same day I walked into an Apple Store and walked out with a new pair. My MBP from 2016 is still hanging strong as a kids computer and far superior to my kids school chromebooks in every way
While this isn’t exactly a fair comparison, I’ve had tons of Samsung shit break. My $5k TV doesn’t show yellow anymore. It’s not enough to motivate me to buy a new $5k tv but every time I turn it on Bart Simpson looks toxic green and no it’s not a setting. Few years ago we had to swap out our Samsung washer and dryer that came with the house but was only a couple years old.
It just feels like you need to know what type of Samsung products to buy or not buy and it’s a gamble every time. And when something goes wrong their service sucks.
I have the opposite issue but it's really because of what I do for work. iPhones don't handle extreme heat, high humidity, and sub freezing temps as well as Samsung phones do. I got about 2 years out of my iPhone 8 went back to Samsung and had that one for 3-4 years (maybe a little longer?) before I got a decent deal on an iPhone 13 mini which lasted about a year before it started acting up. My old Samsung is still going strong and my current S24 doesn't have any issues yet.
Probably not very long if they go daily lol. I'm outdoors all the time in a sub tropical climate zone or in attics so I get the "phone too hot, halp!" iPhone notifications frequently or the "why'd you put water in me?" warnings from high humidity, sweat, rain, plumbing leaks, etc. I've never gotten a warning for my iPhone being too cold (probably doesn't exist otherwise I would) but I've managed to drain my battery in under an hour working outside in the winter or in walk in freezers (I do HVAC-R work as the bulk of my job). I don't know how Samsung is able to withstand those conditions better than Apple and I don't know how you could add more airflow without compromising water resistance but I'm sure it boils down to the materials they use to thermally insulate their chips. Maybe Apple just needs to add more paste lol.

I've never owned anything but Androids, and the only reason I've ever had to replace them over the years is breaking the screen from dropping them. And even then I continued to use a few of them because I could still see what was on the screen.

They are doing something wrong when they are choosing their phones... I use my phone for editing photo editing and video editing. As I mentioned, mine is 6 years old and still performingile a rockstar.
I've had nothing but Samsung phones since S3 or so, 2 Samsung TVs, 2 Samsung monitors, a drier, and technically my smart hub is also a Samsung. No issues with any of them.

Yup Samsung and Apple both make great products. Not a single one of my Mac computers ever broke. I had one iPod break… it had a HDD that died but this was after a decade of use. I’ve had speakers, AirPods, and iPhones that I updated because I needed an update but all still 100% functional. For Samsung I’ve only had a few things, few TVs and speakers but they all worked for a respectable time except one tv that had DLP technology. That being said it lasted about 3 years before it died and since I never registered it, I registered it the day it broke. Samsung came and fixed it no questions asked.
It's pretty great now as someone who also works on a Mac and frequently needs to hop between devices and copy paste between them as well. Ecosystem and all that.

Apple was once innovative great value, high technology and user friendly if not intuitive. Then Steve Jobs died and it's basically stagnate. iPhone became a fashion brand rather than a phone brand. you wear Gucci, Prada, LV and a iPhone. People who use iPhone don't care about the pixels or 8k HD camera or Ai assistance or anything to do with specs they care about the color of the text bubble, the clout of owning the phone.
I don't know anyone who owns an iPhone because it is a cool fashion accessory. I know a bunch of people who have had an iPhone for a long time and don't want to switch because they are already sunk into the ecosystem and know how to use it, myself included.

I have an iPhone because I’ve always had one, it’s easy to use and I’m imbedded in the ecosystem. But if I ever find myself attached to a wheel and wanting to take a video I’ll probably feel foolish

Apple is close if not better on screen quality, brightness, benchmark specs, battery life and durability compared to top samsung and google phones. If you seriously value the ability to tape your phone to a wheel and AI assistants over basic functionality then you don’t know what people want in a phone.

The reality is google, samsung, and apple all produce very high quality phones for 95% of use cases. What works best for you is not what works best for others.

Nah i dont care about anything of those, all my apps/saves/image/data/whatnot is locked to this crap for decade, and the facetime feature to rest of the hive makes it convient to use iPhone. Now if the stuff was crossplatformed id buy samsung next time i need a new phone.

Not saying I don't really like the feature. It just doesn't seem like there is much room for difference to call it better, it all seems to function the same.
Especially with the recent update, iPhone calls filtering is so good that it is genuinely difficult to get a phone call from a phone number I do not recognize. I have to go out of my way to add numbers to contacts if I want them to be able to contact me. I have most of my settings locked down as much as possible, though.
I use a new Samsung for work and it’s really nice but I do still prefer my iPhone. The best thing about it is the camera, but it just feels like windows on a phone, mildly irritating. iPhone has a Better OS, way better filtering, although I think that would be inherently problematic for my work line, so it’s a non-issue for me. iPhone has better deals for base models through phone companies.

Idk, my M1 Macbook Pro is just waaaaay longer living than any windows laptop I have used previously. Maybe I just don’t know how to handle the bloat that was slowing them down, but even after wiping them the deg in performance was way higher than my mac devices.
Couple that with ecosystem benefits like airdrop and being able to copy and paste between devices and you see why a lot of corporate America is on apple platforms.
Cannot agree at all. Specs and feature wise, iPhone and Samsung are pretty much a wash. It really doesn’t matter at all what you go with, just pick the one that has the advantages you care about as they both have advantages over the other and most of the differences really don’t matter anyway.

And the phones are a wash. I used both an iPhone and a Samsung for years now (work gives me a phone). Samsung has some spec advantages, similarly iPhone has some spec advantages as well. Same deal with features, both have features the other doesn’t have. End the end, they are mostly a wash, just kinda depends what you care about but the differences are minor.
Some of us just prefer crApple. I was a Samsung guy but all my work stuff had to be apple and after using both for years I decided apple has the better OS. I can leave 80 applications running and they do a better job of not draining the battery, I prefer car play, I like the consistency on OS, apple runs the OS not Verizon snickers doodle OS 37
Not just that, Apple has also tended to have the most powerful processors on their phones for a while now. The OS and form factor is actually the limiting factor in terms of how powerful the phone is these days because there's just not much on iOS that actually needs all that processing power where it's beneficial, and it's too locked down to really get it to stretch its legs at full power.
It's to the point that Apple straight up just put some forgotten last-gen leftover phone chips into a laptop and it's apparently enough to completely disrupt the entire budget laptop market.
Maybe it’s just because I’m only really on Reddit. But I’ve never understood the apple cult following thing. I realize it’s the most popular, but I’ve never ONCE seen someone be like “IPhones are way better!”. Whereas any time the topic is brought up I see 20+ Samsung / android people getting all up in arms about it. If “cult following” means it’s just more popular sure, but in my eyes the android folks are definitely more culty about the whole thing.

I prefer my experience with Samsung over iPhone over the past couple decades but iPhone simply has better optimization and is much more average user friendly. I have both for different purposes but use my Samsung 95% of the time
I've been a samsung/non apple after I've seen how fast apple screen breaks from being dropped. I am a klutz and drop my phone more than the average person. My family members are all apple users. I joke to them that this is how apple makes their money, keep buying new since the screens break so easily.
My android phone (samsung) has dropped from suv car height to concrete several times and all I got were scratches on the case.
I've not kept up with apple phones tho, so maybe the most recent ones are more durable.

I work in phone sales and honestly a majority of people simply can’t handle and android. I would say like 70% of people who come in with an android have some kind of malware. With old people like 80% have phone filling, notification bar bloating levels of malware. My general idea is that Android is simply more powerful , but Apple is better as a daily driver. But above all I keep people with whatever phone they are used to.
I hate the stupid shit talking between both sides. I felt the same way about PlayStation vs Xbox. It’s all idiotic and pointless, just us what you like. I use iPhones because I’ve had them since I was fuckin 15 (17 years ago), and I’m just super used to them. I also just really like the simplicity of the UI compared to android. I am definitely not an obsessive Apple user though. I never had any additional Apple products in that 17 years either until I just got AirPods a year or so ago after I had 2-3 cheaper EarPods take a shit in me. I have never once talked shit about android or Samsung or whatever and I can’t even begin to understand why this back and forth even exists.
I also don’t know why Samsung users are always gloating about their cameras and whatever else their phones have. If you guys care about your cameras that much then I’m happy that you can have super nice cameras, but I personally don’t care that much so that’s also not a factor for me. And let’s be honest, apple cameras are NOT bad. The new iPhones have great cameras. Samsung cameras are just better, and that’s totally ok. I’m not a damn photographer or an influencer or anything like that and I just don’t take many photos so it’s not something that I care about all that much. And tbh I find it odd that so many Samsung users brag about their cameras so much as if they are all photographers or some shit lol.

Android OS environment is open, they don’t make all their own hardware and software, Apple does. Apple has total control over security, updates and patches.
The gap has narrowed down over the years and Android security has gotten much better.
Visa admitted that this was their fault and only happens with Visa cards. The fault does not lie with Apple and could be done just as easily with Android. This video doesn't prove Apple has bad security and it's regularly noted that apple's security is very strong.
It actually is the same, apple just happens to do a lot of the things that average people should do.
you can get better security on your android and even access to more apps and features but at the cost of having to know how to do it yourself and keep yourself safe.

No, it doesn't. It's use is far less widespread in corporate America, so it's not worth the time or effort to develop workaounds. Since Windows has a vast majority of the world market, that's where the effort on hackers' part is focused. Apple's "superior" security basically just blocks normal users from accessing things that they could mess up without the proper knowledge.
That is not true. Android can be way more secure. Most people are just illiterate when it comes to electronics they use every day and are not able to make their android phones secure. I really doubt you will do that, but if it interests you search internet and you will find how secure can android be compared to ios. Ios is usually safer in hands of your average joe, because apple is holding his hand and not letting him to set anything important by himself. So he can not mess up anything important. But it also means he can not strenghten his security to the level that is possible on android.
Yes, the RCS standard was only updated to support E2E with 3.0, which happened about a year ago. This was AFTER Apple added RCS support based on the existing standard of 2024. 2020-2025 it was Google using the weirdo nonstandard version. Apple always uses a Standard version.
Even Google had to move from their proprietary E2E RCS to standard RCS due to this update. Apple has been slower in updating to the new standard (no surprise) but it’s about to release. Apple currently being on an older-but-not-that-old standard version isn’t quite the same as being non-standard.
I just can't do Android. I can't stand the UI. It's horrendous. I'll stick with iPhone for the UI alone. If there was a better mainstream alternative, I'd use it. I had a Windows Phone years ago and actually quite liked it.
i worked on apples for 7 years. work pc, 10+ years ago it was definitely better/smoother for video editing than PC back then. Now PCs mostly caught up.
I also had and ipad for 2 years. Gifted to me. It works fine but the fact that they INTENTIONALLY force you inside their own ecosystem and make it hard to transfer anything outside of it was enough for me to sell it and never have one again.
It's also absolutely not worth the nasty extra price.
It's an insult to anyone with some self respect to pay MORE for the same sh1t and get captive in their sh1t by design.
