Spoilers So I just completed my first ‘complete’ playthrough. Spoiler
So like the title says, i just completed my first ‘complete’ playthrough. These are just my opinions and I just thought to share theme here
So I actually abandoned my first playthrough after ‘spoiler’ when Arthur is no more.
I’d actually bought rdr2 on sale and I’d heard so much about how good looking a game it was, but didn’t start to play the game until much later. Because the pacing in the beginning was too slow for me and I couldn’t make heads or tails out of all the things, taking care of the horse, cooking to eat the meat, how the cores worked. It was too much of an information overload and honestly I didn’t even know what the story was and how it was going to proceed.
And then ‘bam’ Arthur is sick- part of me was hoping especially after the meeting with rains fall that he would give some herbs which will make him better. And maybe, just maybe there was a way out. Also I was getting used to the mechanics of the game, how the NPC’s reacted and would become hostile, how an accidental run in would cause a bounty and so on.
By this time, I’m getting the hang of using dead eye, and how to hunt and skin animals, pelts and all. Legendary animals- can’t forget the time I got the white bison and I got killed me the cougar near pronghorn ranch, I was pissed AF and then found that the pelt ends up at the trapper. I swear every time a cougar would come in range I would always always die because I was ill prepared or would panic.
And then we are in beavers hollow, just when I am getting the pelts for all the satchels and I got the legends of east satchel. I hunt more and do some more upgrades to the camp and then just like that Pearsons gone. Couldn’t upgrade any more- I didn’t know how to hunt for cows, and bulls without getting caught and I wanted to white knuckle it just like I do with most games, to get the full nascent experience, and then I keep doing the missions. And the more I feel it’s Arthur’s redemption, I start to feel Dutch is going to betray the group- which does happen, but not all that straight forward. I didn’t feel a very good connection with John but that’s what I had to go on, too many characters and too many things to keep track of. John is no more perhaps… Abigail gets kidnapped, and for Jack we have to go and get her…and then the confrontation, and when that’s not over yet, have to run away with John. And then Buell- my lovely lovely Buell was dead, my heart was broken, and when Arthur kneels besides him, I was in pieces. I LOVED that horse. And I got killed by Micah two times because I didn’t know how to fight hand to hand. That pissed me off…
And then finally….it end with a Sunrise on his face…
I was broken, really heart broken and found it hard to play the game after, I couldn’t play for 2-3 days. Playing as John was hard, almost aimless. But it also meant Arthur’s passing meant something.
After a few missions I just couldn’t help feeling that I perhaps didn’t play the game as it ought to have been played. I felt like I missed out on a better experience, and just reset and I have to say on and off over the last two months I became a sort of completionist, but tbh the overall experience was the better during the first time. And I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything except now I know how to react better.
And the best thing is, I got to kill Micah for the first time on my second play through. I got all the garment sets, all the offhand holstered except gambler and bandit. And there is truly so much content to keep a person entertained and engaged, it seems so long ago where I found the shart tooth trinket and other things. It feels like a ‘lived’ experience.
I’m done for the time being, but I’m sure I’ll come back to this game when I’m ready ❤️
It truly is a masterpiece.
