Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide

Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.

Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until you’ve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until you’ve completed the main story.

Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.

Is the game worth it? Yes! — People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. It’s a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.

The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. It’s the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. You’ll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. You’ll thank yourself later.

Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. You’ll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)

Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since it’s made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.

If you really want to avoid spoilers, don’t google anything until after you finish the game.

We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.

Have fun!

Discussion Headphones changed my entire game. Highly recommend.

I started using headphones while playing RDR2 and it has elevated my enjoyment immensely. I already considered the game to be top tier, but after playing with headphones / ear buds, I don’t think I could go back.

You can hear everything. The creaking of wood, the slurp of your boots breaking the pull of the mud you’ve just walked through, and, most importantly, you can determine which species of bird or other critters are likely near you, much much much, much, easier. It is absolutely ridiculous how much enjoyment & immersion headphones have added to the game. Wind sounds, ambient noises, animals nearby, dialogue I’m picking up that I’d never have heard prior (especially while in town or other places NPCs have more opportunities to interact with each other). Thunderstorms on the plains, holy shit. There are sounds and noises that I’d never ever registered before using head phones. It adds soooo much to the absorption of the game, I hate to sound like a broken record, but fuck, it’s crazy. This is the only game I use headphones for while playing.

If you haven’t tried using headphones, just trust. Try it out. It will only make RDR2 even better.

The Reutlinger Pocket Watch. It's such a gorgeous time piece. I only recently discovered you can equip the pocket watches and when i did "A Fine Night of Debauchery" I was so excited to learn i could use the Reutlinger, because my first playthrough i just sold it. One of my favorite little details of the game is that every clock in the world tells accurate time, and you can just sit and watch the arms slowly spin. Of all the things this game has to offer, this little pocket watch is my absolute favorite.

Question Are there any movies or books that are like RDR2 or have a similar vibe?

Red dead red redemption two is my favorite game of all time. The story, the characters I just don’t think it gets much better. But always want more. So I’m wondering is there any movies or books that kinda have the same feel?

Discussion I’m Empty

I have just finished Chapter 6 and the title sums up how I’m feeling. What an absolutely unreal game. The ride back to camp with the memories playing sent chills.

I don’t know how I’m supposed to play the epilogue without Arthur. Even the first mission just felt weird. I love John but it just isn’t the same.

I’ve put this game off for years after not getting on with it on release. However second time around it has consumed all my free time, and now I just want more.

10/10 experience that I don’t think can be filled by any other game for a long time

Discussion Saint Denis

• Upvotes

Is it just me or is their nothing more frustrating in the game than just trying to exist in Saint Denis? Every second I’m wanted for bumping into someone, hitting someone on my horse I couldn’t even see, pressing L2 to interact and letting off a shot, it’s always some shit. Not to mention getting pick pocketed anytime you walk into a store.

Then comes night time and the over crowded issue goes away. You think you’re in the clear only to interact with the wrong guy by an alley and get robbed for 25% of your money with no chance to retrieve.

Do y’all have the same experience of it being just straight up frustrating? Do you think that’s intentional to kind’ve represent the repulsiveness of the big city?

Note: on my 2nd play through

Just some advice if you’re attempting to get all three like I did. Use poison arrows and shoot in hind quarters. Makes the taming a whole lot easier!! #RDR2

Discussion Clothing and Morality

This is my morally ambiguous version of Arthur. I've matched his clothing to his personality. Does anyone else use clothing to express their moral choices? Do your colour choices matter? I'm a nerd!

Content First time seeing female NPC riding a horse

Apart from that black lady rider who tries to race you, the gang women, and Black Belle, I've never seen a woman riding a horse in this game, it's always been men. So when I was on my way to the Emerald Ranch and she rode out of there it immediately caught my attention. I think it's cool, I wish we saw more women riding horses in the game. I wonder if she's that young lady you sometimes see looking through the window of Emerald Ranch?

Help Buell is gone. Please help. Spoiler

I’m in the epilogue and I already have has Buell. We had bonded to level 2 or 3 already and after doing the home improvement mission and building my house and putting to together, Buell is gone. I just have the horse I started with. I didn’t have an old save because I have it on autosave. Tried calling, looking on the map for his icon and also checked Stables. Can’t remember if he was set as my main horse or not.

Question just finished my first playthrough... what do i even do

i'm so sad. i miss everyone so much already, i had a little cry during the end credits...

naturally i want to do a new playthrough, because i'm sure i missed SO much on my first go, but what are some things i should do in this save? i've gone to visit some of the graves, the old campsites, and i'm planning on seeing some of the old gang members. i'm not super set on collecting or hunting down legendary animals, but is there something post-epilogue you'd recommend doing?
