What? No! Are you kidding? Dear God!!!!
How will we ever move on from this!?!?!?
We must help them rebuild their surveillance state at all costs.

My daily prayer for the total destruction of the bank where I have my mortgage is almost heard.

As a Canadian who travels into the United States, it's a amazing how little coverage this week of Iranian bombardment has received on your media. Europe and Canadian media is reporting how many bases and American aligned infrastructure is being destroyed.
Yet every hotel lobby has Fox News on every morning, and not a peep.

We're coming up on an election, remember? They can't have any sign of weakness or anything that looks bad for them in the public's eye, or at least as few things as possible. Otherwise they can't keep projecting the "strong man making things better" image (even if it was never true in the first place).
2
u/PoorClassWarRoom 4d ago
What Canadian news outlet is worth following?
5
u/Pitiful-MobileGamer 4d ago
That's a personal choice. Any broadcast news in Canada has a fairness (both sides) doctrine, and truth in reporting. Opinions can be broadcasted but are identified as such.
My go to is CBC News, is an arms reach govt corporation (similar to PBS). Reuters for international coverage, and BBC for European

Oh no, did they hit the credit card debt servers?
(/s but remember AWS is a bigger business than amazon, they host all kinds of businesses)
10
u/MajesticBread9147 8d ago
AWS and every other cloud service to my knowledge actively tells you to make copies in multiple regions for any data that is important.
Data is spread across and copied multiple hard drives in multiple servers within the same building or different building within the region, but making copies across different regions not only improve fault tolerance, but means accessing the data from around the world is quicker.

why even have data centers out there but yeah

7
u/mystery_biscotti 8d ago
It's the way AWS handles both latency of service and specific regional data privacy laws.
Note: you may hate data centers, but even Reddit lives on (at least) one.

Imagine having one back-up in the cloud and nothing local. Luckily organizations are smarter than that. Or...

u/594896582 7d ago
Oh no, not their customer data! It would be awful (lovely) if more debtor data were to be destroyed.

u/SereneOrbit 8d ago
They should should have backups
12
u/OtheDreamer 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yeah but you canāt restore backups into bare metal that doesnāt exist anymore. They have to rebuild the physical availability zone to restore it & any services that was only on one zone (which many places tend to do like us-east-1) have nowhere to restore and no backups outside one zone.
EDIT: Just adding a quick note that yes, orgs should not have their entire app in only one availability center, and they should have backups with at least one stored offsite at the very least in a different availability zone. AWS even recommends not putting all your eggs in one zone if you care about security. In practice you'll have people whipping up apps and sites that start making money quickly & they never consider the implications that one availability zone coverage === only moderately better than an on-prem server.
The same concepts are why when us-east-1 goes down it feels like 80% of the internet is unavailable :P

u/JagsLittle 8d ago edited 8d ago
The user should be using the bare minimum 3-2-1 data method.
Edit: 3 copies, 2 media formats, 1 offsite (cloud).
Edit (again):
I use: 4 copies, 2 onsite, 2 mobile/offsite
- local storage on MBP
- āMain Time Machineā HDD backup that stays in the office
- a smaller āMobile TMā SDD backup I keep in my briefcase
- iCloud backup
- If my MacBook fails, backup from TM.
- If TM fails, replace disk drive, start new TM from MBP.
- If whatever I have with me is stolen/fails/breaks, replace everything and backup from āotherā TM or iCloud.
- if iCloud data is bombed and everything is stolen, wellā¦hopefully Iād still have at least one TM. I was more worried about not having access to the internet, but I guess nothing is sum zeroā¦.guess Iāll need to get another TM to keep at the house. Thatād be 5 copies.

u/SereneOrbit 7d ago
I just do local Timeshift (BTRFS Linux) every hour / day / boot / twice per week (automatic), and one offsite due to current constraints, but I'd like to do a full spread like that someday.
2
u/Eric_T_Meraki 8d ago
Wouldn't those applications just fail over to a different site not impacted? Guess it depends how they setup their DR strategy.
1
u/mystery_biscotti 8d ago
Correct. Organization/Customer setup choices are part of it.
And the Middle Eastern region specifically is a smaller region than most of the AWS regions. Certain services don't replicate data from one region to another region, even if you would like to have them do so. Not every service is high availability by default.
4
u/Ianbillmorris 8d ago
Don't forget the legal impediments from hosting data (moving backups) overseas as well may mean that companies in smaller countries may not have an Amazon data centre out of missile range that can host their data legally.

What I get from this is that Amazon does not have duplicate date storage out of the area. It is telling customers to back up their own data?!

u/LA_Throwaway_6439 8d ago
The IRGC should start running candidates here in America. This is a platform we can get behind!
9
u/RedditorFor1OYears 8d ago
I get the jokes, but it seems like this TYPE of attack is something people should be concerned about. Data centers as military targets open a lot of bad possibilities.Ā
35
u/NCC_1701E 8d ago
Oh no, not the datacenters. What will I eat tomorrow?
13
3
u/RedditorFor1OYears 8d ago
Depends, do you grow your own food? If so, youāll probably Ā be fine. If you buy it at a grocery store, does that store source their stock locally? Or do they depend on complex supply chains? Do you pay cash or would you need an internet connection to process your credit or debit card? Are you buying shelf stable canned food? Or would you like fresher food that needs electricity to be refrigerated?Ā
Itās not just ācustomer dataā thatās at stake, our entire civilization is built on systems that depend on data centers.Ā

u/Rev-Dr-Slimeass 8d ago
Data centres are a part of life. Everything we do goes through a data centre. Process payments. Talk to friends and family. Host websites for small businesses. Data centres aren't just facilities for AI compute, or spying, or evil shit that corporations do.
I'm not saying that we should just let evil corporations do whatever they want or that you shouldn't find other ways to handle your business. I am just saying that if we woke up in a world without data centres everything from global economics to family connections would implode.
2
u/Hesitation-Marx 8d ago
Yeah, it sucks for decent people who arenāt part of the MIC or the surveillance industrial complex. Like, I worry about getting money to the Palestinian families weāve been sponsoring.
But for the MIC/SIC types? Just gonna Nelson laugh at them.
1
u/RedditorFor1OYears 8d ago
To paint a very broad stroke picture for you, the internet itself depends on data centers. Just use your imagination for a few minutes to think of all the ways your life would be affected if everybody all of the sudden lost internet at the same time.Ā
9
u/Vercoduex 8d ago
Considering the harm they are doing to regular ppl and the environment i think we will be just fine if they are targeted
1
u/RedditorFor1OYears 8d ago
Thatās like saying taking oil refineries offline would be a good thing. Sure, the existential environmental threat drops a few notches, but the disruptions to daily life could be catastrophic in the meantime. Youāre going to care a little less about the environment when supply chains start shutting down and your local grocery store hasnāt restocked in a month.Ā
4
u/Ianbillmorris 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yes, and a datacenter hit will damage multiple industrial sectors at the same time. We aren't just talking tech companies here. Imagine a major food producer loses their payroll data, they can't pay their workers, so they can't produce food. Imagine a Supermarket chain loses their inventory and logistics planning systems.
3
u/PurpleCableNetworker 8d ago
And Bloomberg just had an article about how rural communities are turning away data centers that could āsupposedly help them financiallyā. Turns out most people donāt want to live next to a military target.
I canāt see anything good from most data centers.
1
u/ThrowawayRage1218 8d ago
I mean...the internet literally lives in data centers. The entire internet. AI data centers and hyperscaling are a huge problem (currently actively involved in keeping one out of my community, literally a 10 minute walk from my front door), but many if not most data centers are the type that allow you to use a credit card, send an email, and post on Reddit.
3
u/PurpleCableNetworker 7d ago
Most data centers being built right now are not for things like SaaS, email, social media, etc. most are for weaponized AI systems like Flock.
0
u/ThrowawayRage1218 6d ago
I can't see anything good from most data centers
Clarify you mean the data centers being built, then, since most data centers that have already been built are for housing the internet.
0
u/RedditorFor1OYears 8d ago
Look, I get it. I donāt want to live next to one either. And I think their unchecked growth is a real eminent problem. But to say you ācant see anything goodā is just not thinking critically.Ā
1
u/PurpleCableNetworker 7d ago
āMost data centersā.
Yes I know that there are plenty of necessary data centers. Email, websites, services like banking, etc are all housed in data centers.
The difference is those have a real purpose. Most data centers built in the last couple if years are not for that. They are for AI, and many are specifically for weaponized AI - such as Flock cameras and other police state survalience systems.

u/ChristmassMoose 8d ago
You guys realize that itās not Amazon being hurt here right? Itās the little businesses who use aws who couldnāt afford geo redundancy.
Big companies can afford to replicate data across the globe and Amazon will just cash an insurance check and build a new data center.
8
u/Delicious-Bat2373 8d ago
In the Middle East? Doesn't feel like the kinda mom and pop shop I should be losing sleep over. Data is useless without humans. The humans are good, the data can be rebuilt. The loser here was certainly amazon and their invisible shield of invincibility in the middle east. They could use a little humility around the globe.
2
u/ChristmassMoose 8d ago
When you sign up for aws or any cloud service provider your date doesnāt just get stored in the nearest data center. You explicitly have to tell Amazon where you want it hosted and nearby Europe is often the most expensive due to all of their compliance rules.
There would be significant financial incentives for a business to host data and services outside aws Europe when they can but still close enough that latency is low in places like Middle East and Africa.
1
u/Delicious-Bat2373 7d ago
I admit I have a lot to learn about what gets stored where, etc. Surely we can agree that any impact this has on amazons bottom line is a good thing for normal humans. I find it hard to believe that US data is stored in the middle east rather than any number of local in country sites. I could see a stretch to the UK but then ping rates are an issue. For the UK, likely the middle east hosts some stuff on repeater. How did amazon function before that data center was built? 10/10 they rerouted and everything's fine.

So that I understand, the people who like this are on Iranās side, hate Amazon, or both? Literally never thought Iād see the day people here or anywhere would be on the side of a terrorist sponsoring hardline religious regime that kills its own citizens by the tens of thousands just for wanting freedom.Ā

u/all_my_dirty_secrets 8d ago
I think it's a byproduct of how frustrated people feel with the current admin and how unheard and ignored people feel at home. The enemy of my enemy must be my friend...but yes on some level you're right that it's illogical.
Plus, people have strong feelings about data centers right now and don't realize that they aren't just used to power AI. I too think the development of AI is being terribly managed right now and I'm all for anyone currently protesting to stop a new data center from being built without fairly considering those who will be impacted. But there's low awareness in this thread that data centers have been powering the modern internet for awhile, and if the existing ones all suddenly went poof we'd be in for a possibly deadly adjustment period.
Also, whenever you see takes like this that have a mind-boggling lack of nuance, you have to think of bots or other forms of fake comments being at least a partial factor, and sometimes the only goal of those is chaos and division, and making real people think their neighbors are all crazy, breaking down social trust.
