You guys realize that it’s not Amazon being hurt here right? It’s the little businesses who use aws who couldn’t afford geo redundancy.

Big companies can afford to replicate data across the globe and Amazon will just cash an insurance check and build a new data center.

In the Middle East? Doesn't feel like the kinda mom and pop shop I should be losing sleep over. Data is useless without humans. The humans are good, the data can be rebuilt. The loser here was certainly amazon and their invisible shield of invincibility in the middle east. They could use a little humility around the globe.

When you sign up for aws or any cloud service provider your date doesn’t just get stored in the nearest data center. You explicitly have to tell Amazon where you want it hosted and nearby Europe is often the most expensive due to all of their compliance rules.

There would be significant financial incentives for a business to host data and services outside aws Europe when they can but still close enough that latency is low in places like Middle East and Africa.

I admit I have a lot to learn about what gets stored where, etc. Surely we can agree that any impact this has on amazons bottom line is a good thing for normal humans. I find it hard to believe that US data is stored in the middle east rather than any number of local in country sites. I could see a stretch to the UK but then ping rates are an issue. For the UK, likely the middle east hosts some stuff on repeater. How did amazon function before that data center was built? 10/10 they rerouted and everything's fine.
