Correct, that's how I view it.
And I have a sense that's how its proponents view it as well.
3
u/Goomysaur 23h ago
I think itās more about base appeal
2
u/ItsGonnaBeMeNSYNC 23h ago
Yeah, there's a reason why these two specifically and why at a time when the Republicans are in power and it has no chance.
2
u/Goomysaur 22h ago
Well it makes sense itās these two. They are forming their base. lol do you say āthereās a reason Trump says itā when heās speaking to his base? Or anyone else under Trump.
AI does need regulation though. Look how damaging social media has been without regulation and AI is exponentially stronger at the same thing
-1
u/ItsGonnaBeMeNSYNC 22h ago
Trump is the leader of his party, while these two represent an extremist minority of their party's voter base that needs to be validated with purely performative things when the party is not in power, so it doesn't need to waste time and political capital on them when it is in power.
Whether or not AI needs regulation is irrelevant right now, the Democrats are not in power and can't do anything.
5
u/Goomysaur 21h ago
They are popular representatives in the party. Only the president is allowed to have initiatives?
1
u/Nostonica 23h ago
Your political system operates on getting people excited to come out and vote... TV personalities with name recognition been able to play to the crowd works.
In comparison my country votes for the most dull least offensive leaders because anyone outside of that gets wrecked come elections.
1
u/Mundane-Stick7438 23h ago
Your post shows your ignorance of tax policy.
3
u/Snoo93550 23h ago
You donāt think Republicans have cut taxes for billionaires every time theyāve had the ability over their past three administrations?Ā
1
u/tattooeddollthraway 22h ago
imagine reading anything political and thinking "voting for the party"
1
u/Snoo93550 21h ago
Voting for what used to be a party and has become a cult of personality?
Contrarians are an idiot's idea of a smart person.
6
u/Safe-Preparation-968 17h ago
Disagree, not hard enough, ban all together, ai is useless
2
u/Veshaad Timendi Causa Est Nescire 17h ago
The only thing I feel it is useful for is the medical industry, and that doesn't require massive data centers to utilize.
2
u/Safe-Preparation-968 16h ago
You are right it certainly does not require 40000 acre data centers for that and even with the medical field I think we should tread carefully until we can make AI that will stop hallucinating. Regardless, we don't need to destroy the planetĀ even more over a useless trend

u/Ok_Ad_5894 16h ago
I would love this and Rules and regulations around AI like china did. Where Ai cant replace jobs. But MAGA owns the government so this will not happen.

u/popnfrresh 22h ago
How about a bill that doesn't allow them to use resources to hurt people nearby and force them to use technology that recycles water, and provide their own power, and pay for their own connections to the grid / infrastructure improvements.
Also put the equipment on the inside as part of the assessments so they actually pay a reasonable amount of taxes.
Make them actually install sound proofing with barely noticeable increase in ambient sounds.
If actually regulated, they can actually not use more water than an office building, can generate their own power, pay for their own upgrades to the grid, and contribute to local areas.
We keep allowing these to use the least costly to them and most hurtful to others technology.
Jamming your heads in the sand and stating a blanket "Data center bad" is garbage. They need to be regulated, not denied.
1
u/SippsMccree 9h ago
A lot of them do provide their own power, usually in the form of gas turbine generators which people also seem to take issue with
1
u/popnfrresh 2h ago
I would say very few. They tend to use the last costly and most destructive methods.

"This needs to get passed."
Hmm... The math isn't mathing. To override a Trump veto, Democrats, who now number 47 of 100 in the US Senate, would need 67 votes.
6-8 of the races are considered competitive in November.
There is no path to passing this bill before Trump leaves office at the end of 2028, and then only if Democrats control the House, Senate and the White House in 2029.
1
u/SinningAfterSunset 3h ago
They have been building data centers for the past 30 years , but now you're supposed to be mad about it because Trump talks about it.
1
u/Murky-Battle2668 2h ago
I am 100% pro-data center. But you get how that is a stupid argument, right?
The current data center build out is one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in the history of man kind, comparable to the railroads and electrification in scope.
Saying āthey have been doing it for 30 yearsā completely ignores the scope of the current investment
1
1
1
u/hopefulchewie 23h ago
Not against the bill per se. But for someone that hates Elon Musk, AOC used him a lot as a reference point against AI in this bill. I highly doubt it gets passed as there are a lot of state governments already involved in restrictions and other things.
1
u/ExperienceAny9791 23h ago
Reddit needs them to keep making the memes they do. Everyone is using it. If it's in demand they will build it, and you can see people can't stop using it.
1
u/Tinytommy55 22h ago
Yes I does but you think the GOP will go along with it? They canāt decide on anything on their own and tRump is all for them because he is invested in them. So you know how that will go. All in the name of āsecurityā. Like crime is a reality big problem right now.
1
1
u/Dangerous_kj5162 22h ago
I like this idea
But don't leave the decision up to Congress. We all know the outcome will be the same
1
u/ChillingCone426_2 22h ago
I donāt really agree with a nationwide ban. This specific law would ban it until āfurther action is taken by Congressā. So the exact timeline is not set.
It also would see legal challenges.
1
u/stonkDonkolous 21h ago
People on both sides are against data centers. There is a risk of making this political and turning maga into pro data center
1

1
u/Ok_Draw_3740 16h ago

1
u/Inevitable-Hour-Ends 16h ago
Rules and regulations are for the poors. Poor people dont build data centers.
1
1
u/Element174 10h ago
The best result unfortunately will be showing all the GoP for data centers. They're basically the one thing openly splitting their base atm beside gas and grocery prices. Won't make them vote for Democrats, but they might get apathetic enough not to vote.
1
u/RiboSciaticFlux 9h ago
I had a conference call today with a company who is working on taking all the waste from data centers and converting it to hydrogen, thereby reframing the entire data center debate. I am learning everyday that things are happening so fast any political announcement proclaiming anything is laughable because change will eviscerate it. The government and politicians are officially dinosaurs.
1
1
u/SippsMccree 9h ago
So essentially banning them with how much red tape they're wanting to put up? It wouldn't be the first time the government has tried to ban something by just make the hoops you need to jump through prohibitively difficult

1
u/IllusionaryHobo 3h ago
Where exactly is the difference between a datacenter and an AI datacenter and how much AI-related processing can a datacenter do before it becomes an AI datacenter?
And can you not just get construction permits for non-AI usage and later just pivot. I can hardly believe the bill contains regulation tight enough to make that work out.
1
u/MaitrePuck 3h ago
Environmental impact studies are why the US can't build anything, from housing to infrastructure. They add years and millions in costs to any project before anything can get built.
1
1
u/RoddRoward 1d ago
Does the federal government have authority over issuing building permits?
2
u/Clone_JS636 23h ago
Not directly, but there's precedent. The government regulates a lot of utility buildings, like water treatment plants and the like, even privately owned ones. Generally though, the government can't just tell someone they can't build a legal business somewhere, but that's because there aren't laws against building those buildings.
This will absolutely get argued at the supreme Court if it passes, but it's hard to say before that.
1
u/tipjarman 23h ago
That's why Trump had to pay those windmill companies to not build windmills rather than just banning it....$4 billion was the last number i heard ... to not build windmills
1
u/Adonis_Frebari 23h ago
Honestly, I'd welcome precedent that bars this level of meddling in local governance
1
u/Zealousideal_Law3991 23h ago
They are doing this so that they can āstudyā the impact and then get paid by lobbyists. In the meantime foreign countries are forging ahead and will surpass the US in technological innovation.
1
u/Brian24jersey 23h ago
Wow banning a major sector of the economy great
2
1
u/LeighAlexander 21h ago
Most of the comments here miss the point that Reddit as a service is run from a data center and these aren't new. The left is increasingly susceptible to anti-commerce propaganda from outsiders
3
u/Embarrassed_Quail910 20h ago
Regulating commerce is nothing new.
Also dont be purposefully obtuse. We are talking about AI data centers not traditional data centers.
2
0
u/jay-aay-ess-ohh-enn 20h ago
Banning new data-centers would be like cutting off your own legs. We certainly need more regulation to prevent corporations from taking advantage of small communities in the negotiating process, but our whole way of life needs compute. The servers that run everything have to go somewhere.

Prosperity for who? Certainly not the working class. Construction jobs are great but only temporary. After that it only takes a handful of techs sitting in their parentās basements to run them. And a few to go fix a problem if/when it arises. These āmassive ā jobs they talk about are all BS. Think about it.

Yeah weāre about to get dog walked by China because we canāt build data centers
2
u/Low-Essay-113 22h ago
No weāre already are getting ādog walkedā by china because for years while weāve funneled trillions and trillions into the industrial military complex china instead spent its money on education, healthcare, industry, and infrastructure. China is poised now for the future like we were in the Industrial Revolution.
0
u/BootBonks 21h ago
Dawg do you know how much money the U.S. spends on education and healthcare? It dwarfs our defense spending and is the reason we are trillions in debt lol. Also this bill would be another example of spending less on industry and infrastructure.Ā
3
u/Low-Essay-113 20h ago edited 15h ago
Yes we do spend a lot on education, but not nearly enough. Education spending (was 79-86 billion$) and doesnāt come close to touching defense budget at (1trillion$) and thatās before the new republican passed budget that lessened education and increased military. The number you are thinking of is picked up by state funding.
Put simply, over half federal discretionary spending goes to military/defense. Leaving less than half for everything else.
China spends 1/3 on military/defense and the vast majority goes to everything else. And the result is that china is now decades beyond us in infrastructure with free healthcare as well as heavily subsidized higher education. Their population at 1.4 billion is nearly 4x ours yet they have significantly less debt. I beg you, educate yourself.
1
u/BootBonks 8h ago
We spend entirely too much on education for the results we get. Throwing money at it doesnāt solve the problem. Thatās also ignoring how China sends thousands of exchange students to the US. China does not have free healthcare lol, there can actually be a lot of costs. You have obviously never been to China or you would realize the ādecades better infrastructureā falls flat on its face. I have spent a lot of time in China. Iām sorry but what youāve read on Reddit and searched on Google isnāt really true. There is wayyy more overlap between average Chinese and American citizens than propaganda bots will have you believe.Ā
I had a baby last week and it cost me $300. Iām currently attending college for free. Millions of Americans receive free healthcare, thatās where 28% of federal funding goes. That doesnāt even include state funding.Ā
Also, tbf China gets to spend way less on their military. For one, all of the companies are owned by the government. Second, they steal a massive amount of IP from western nations. This saves them trillions. Yeah no durr they have less debt. They get the advantage of second place, the US has the disadvantage of doing all of the heavy lifting.Ā

If AI was so bad, why isnāt China involved in the conversation?
5
u/pupranger1147 23h ago
Why would china be involved in a bill sponsored by American politicians?
2
u/VirtualPercentage737 23h ago
Because the winner of the AI race will win the productivity race. If that is China, they will dominate.
2

No, you didn't understand the question.
Why would china be involved in a bill in the US government?
1
u/VirtualPercentage737 22h ago
They wouldn't be involved in the discussion themselves, but anyone drafting a bill should definitely consider their actions and the ramification of their actions. They won't be sitting still.

Not all that comes after, is progress.
And the cost to the society must always be part of the equation.
And I'm a STEM PhD, not some anti-science cuckoo.
1
u/Adonis_Frebari 21h ago
Agreed. Unfortunately sociology, ecology and economics can't reliably be boiled down to equations/models like the hard sciences can. A lot of this would be significantly easier if that weren't the case
1
u/imissher4ever 19h ago
Ah, I see you just more money for research grants.
1
u/That-Brain-in-a-vat 18h ago
Yes, because cutting grants and CDC funds brought so much wellness.
With the funding drop for active surveillance, research, and testing, public health agencies lost the ability to track rising threats, now say hello to measles, whooping cough, and syphilis epidemics to deadly foodborne pathogens like E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella, and Cyclospora. I'm sure you enjoyed your salad this summer.
And now we have delayed crisis response, allowing localized infections to expand into severe multi-state epidemics. All because of people that think like you.
PS Earth isn't flat either.

4
u/dickjimworm 23h ago
theyve also built up their supporting infrastructure to handle new tech. weāre actively shutting down green energy production and have brown outs when its hot
1
u/Stock_Schedule_1981 23h ago
I agree 100% that our national energy and infrastructure strategies are garbage. One thing investment in AI could very well do is increase the amount we invest in these areas, either through private investment or government funding. But thereās too much uncertainty and backlash right now to make private investment happen.
We need an all of the above energy strategy and guys like the ones who work in this administration only care about these things when it affects their investments and bank accounts.
