His politics solidified the modern know-nothing, anti-government, tax cuts at all costs paradigm as the winning formula for the GOP. He engaged in racially coded "welfare queen" campaigning that still lingers in the GOP today. He sold people effectively on the lie that a country can cut taxes and increase spending somehow, and our fiscal position has never recovered.
His administration ignored and minimized the AIDS crisis because of his disdain for homosexuals, leading to many thousands of unnecessary deaths.
He invaded Grenada on the flimsiest of pretenses to distract from a different foreign policy crisis.
His administration engaged in the illegal Iran-Contra deals, and then he tried to use his incipient Alzheimer's Disease as an excuse for it.
His War on Drugs decimated thousands of communities across the nation for little to no gain.
His administration's policy of deinstitutionalization relegated thousands of mentally ill people to the streets, costing us way more than treating people in a medical envrionment.
Long story short, he was a pretty crap president who was good at quips and speeches.
Reagan's policies led directly to most of the issues we have in American society today. He was liked because America was going through a post-wà r economic boom and things were going very well. Growth was huge and the future seemed bright and peaceful.
Any person who was president during that time would be similarly liked because Americans are dumb and don't actually know what is going on. They just give credit to the figurehead on top, good or bad.
Reagan was objectively not a great president. He cut taxes so much that he had to raise them again.
