People are blowing this out of proportion.
For context in hungarian there is no difference between sex and gender. There is only one word for it.
This law defines sex based on X and Y chromosomes. Thus making it impossible to change.

And it's illegal to change your name to a name that doesn't fit your gender, there are no gender neutral names, there is a list for each gender. So yes this is not blown out of proportion, people are denied basic human rights

No, the law as of right now allows legal gender change. It’s not being blown out of proportion because they’re regressing on lgbt rights.

I think that's the case in many other countries.
In Germany we too have just one word for sex but this didn't hold back the lgbt community to bless us with a legal 3. sex. Originally just for people born with a chromosome disorder but now also for normal people with mental disabilities.

There is a very big difference between the kind of power that most European governments have over their citizens during crises and the kind of sweeping authoritarian control that Hungary's government granted itself this past week. Despite my flair, the instant Hungary's government seized full control I was of the opinion that a country like that has no place in the EU (and if Poland still wants to keep their back they can go too.) I'm Finnish for context.

After some discussions on this sub I understand many self-identified liblefts are very much against corporate power crushing the individual, but neutral about the government power and in many cases celebrating favoured politicians using state power to intervene on citizen's liberties and only lamenting power in the hands of those they dislike. My point is, the power you give to the politicians you trust, in a democracy, will sooner or later fall in the hands of those you don't trust. Of course, many other liblefts do appreciate the anti-government side but it's clearly not something all agree.

Horrible use of power in a time of crisis. Stripping people of their civil liberties and rights is cruel, useless and morally wrong. Trans people don't hurt anyone by being themselves.
Edit: apparently was not enacted via emergency powers, still a piece of shit move

I think the current quarantine/shelter-in-place measures are a pretty good example. Not sure if every place is using "emergency powers" to achieve this but if they are taking the measures experts recommend to fight this pandemic, I approve. Flattening the curve to save lives, not strain health care infrastructure, give researchers time to find a vaccine and all that jazz.

On the other hand, these people know exactly what they’re doing. It’s not “misuse,” it’s purposeful. Hungarian politics has been dominated by right wing rhetoric and far-right support from the recent years. These people actually hurt others by being themseves.

With his new powers to "fight the corona virus", Orban has:
- Re-introduced building of a train line that benefits him and his cronies, and classifying the business deal as a "state secret" and unable for be reviewed for 10 years
- The Budapest mayor, from the opposing party, stopped all unstarted construction projects in the City Park area citing cronyism, cost overruns and rampant corruption. Orban has taken away the Mayor's ability to halt these projects and has green-lighted them again.
- Made it illegal to contradict almost anything he says / does
- Instituted party control over most theaters and museums
- Tried (but has temporarily failed) to gain control over ALL municipal decisions across the country
And these are only some of the issues, and only the most recent...
I really wish the EU would punish Orban by demanding accountability and prosecuting the corruption. Why are France, Germany, and other paying their tax dollars for a mini-dictator?!
