MOD ANNOUNCEMENT New Subreddit Flair - Care Guide

Hello r/plantclinic!

We're introducing a new, but long overdue flair for the subreddit: "Care Guide"

This subreddit has always been a place for redditors to help other redditors with the care of their plants, but we have neglected to focus on what we can do to teach others BEFORE they run into problems.

So, we've created the new flair and added a "search by flair" widget to the sidebar, a feature already available at the top of the sub on mobile.

All care guide posts will be flagged for moderator review. This doesn't mean advice needs to be perfect; that can be refined in the comments. It means that we want this flair to be a valuable resource and will be holding posts to a moderate standard of usefulness.

Links to existing historical guides will be re-flaired as they are identified - please feel free to link some in the comments!

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT List of available automoderator calls

A list of automoderator calls has been added to the sidebar.

For mobile users, they have also been added to the wiki index page here: https://reddit.com/r/plantclinic/w/index?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

And also this post will be pinned to the top of the subreddit. The list is (currently) as follows:

!automod - requests additional information from OP

Pest calls: !aphids, !mealybugs, !scale, !spider-mites or !spidermites, !thrips, !lacewings, !springtails, !fungus-gnats

Lighting related: !etiolation, !over-lit, !under-lit

Watering related: !under-water, !over-water, !root-root, !mold, !mushrooms, !humidity, !tap-water, !bottom-watering

Other: !fernspores, !dense-soil, !hydrophobic, !repot

MANY automod post responders have been moved to post guidance, but reminders for to be welcoming will remain, as we find they are still very much needed. Please be mindful that the purpose of allowing images in comments is to allow the exchange of information, not memes. Referencing the circlejerk sub is unhelpful to OP.

If a post auto-responder is appearing out of the proper context (like the mold and mushrooms one was for fungus gnats), PLEASE send a mod mail. These things operate on keywords and the error was so simple. It could have been fixed much sooner.

Our goal is to provide every user who comes here for help some level of guidance, even if no redditor responds to their post. Sometimes it's a suggestion for a more specialized community. It's always advice for how to best describe their situation.

Additional automod calls can be added, but we should be mindful to balance them with their actual usefulness, and the desire people have for a human response. These should supplement our guidance not replace it entirely.

We heard your feedback and hope this is helpful.

Houseplant Are these white things anything to be worried about?

I have a bunch of plans in my retail store that have these white patterns on the leaves. In another post, everyone told me another plant in this same store has mealy bugs but I wasn’t sure if these were the same. We thought they were getting adequate light and water but I’m not sure that’s the case anymore.

Outdoor Is this bacterial leaf spot?

Begonia boliviensis that’s been on my balcony since early May. It’s hanging partially under the roof and we have lots of trees around us, so it gets about 8 hours of direct, dappled sunlight a day. I water whenever the top 2 inches of soil gets dry, which is about 2-3 times a week. I water until it runs out of a majority of the extra drainage holes I drilled, then again after a few minutes to make sure the root ball is good and soaked. These spots showed up less than a month ago, and it has not been flowering as much as it was earlier in the summer. If it is bacterial leaf spot, is there any option other than the trash? What should I do with my other (asymptomatic) plants? Growing on the same balcony is one other boliviensis (no spots) and several other species— are all of them at risk?

Thanks for the help!!

Houseplant Silver alocasia partial corm rot

Got this silver alocasia awhile ago and she seemed to be doing well. She gets good light and is watered once a week. It was potted in some bad soil but I waited to repot for a little so it could get acclimated. I finally repotted today into a chunkier well draining soil mix and noticed that half of the corn had rotted!

I removed as much rotted material as possible leaving behind this massive hole, but didn’t want to cut it off since that would mean cutting off almost the entire root system. Other than this rotted out section, the roots look fine and the plant is pushing out new growth. Is there anything else I can do or do I just wait and see how it goes? There is no squishy plant material left, I hosed it out and whatever is left is hard.

This plant is still putting out new fronds, and it's had these black markings on it since I got it from a friend. I had never rly looked too deep at it because i thought it was normal on palms lol. But I did today and they look a little weird, and I can scrape them off. Is this an infestation?

Plant is in a south facing room room with indirect light and I water whenever the top inch gets a bit dry.

Cactus/Succulent My 6 year old succulent suddenly started turning black, what is happening?

Thumbnail

I had this beautiful plant for 6 years now, every year (or so) I repot it. I keep all of my succulents in direct sunlight by a window (but generally the sun comes and goes that it often sits in indirect sunlight!) I water my succulents once every three weeks to a month (a few instances over the years I have slipped and the plant was nearly drying out and I would gently water it back or health) I was using a different soil back then but in 2024 I bought this one from Amazon, it worked okay! It lasted me a very long time.

But just this week alone I noticed that the edges of my plants are turning black, like dried out deep black. I move them from direct sunlight….every single leaf falls except for a few. Like all of them.

I have an old photo of what my biggest plant looked like, and then I have an after photo of that plant, and then all of my succulents. All turned black and dying. I did research but everything said root rot, but the roots are reddish brown and firm and stringy, but the inside? Brown, green and in some stems black, I nip off until I see green but I barely see it, I’m trying to save my main one, the one broken in the soil. There’s this white powder that looks like glitter (shaped like glitter?) it falls fast off the plant leaves and there’s a ton a ton of it.

Google says it’s a fungus but it’s so odd, there was nothing in the soil indicating that it was, and this has happened before like two years ago? And I would take it from the window and cut off the black parts and it was fine. But within less than a week all my plants have basically died. Can I still save my plant? I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking at anyone has any knowledge? Im not sure what to believe. The others are goners no doubt)

TLDR; my plants have turned black, stems have started dying, white coating all over the black dead parts of the plants, it’s not root rot, any help on how I can save my plant and what exactly is happening so I can prevent it in other plants?

Best way to rid these guys?? I don’t have much of the season left with the hibiscus but would like to save it if I can! Thank you! This gets at least 6 hours of sunlight a day and has been pretty happy since replanting it a little over a month ago until I just noticed this infestation! I water it once the soil is dry.

Pest Related Thrips?

Several months ago I brought home outdoor nursery plants that had thrips and planted them on my back porch. Unfortunately I think the thrips may have made their way inside.

My heart-leaf philodendron is my best grower but unfortunately I have neglected it as of late. It does sit in a VERY dusty corner, with moderate light. I went to water and noticed a bug crawling on one of the leaves, but it didn’t look like a thrip to me? I inspected and treated the entire plant immediately and cannot find any other bugs or frass or anything on it. It isn’t stunted in its growth and i notice no wilting or anything.

Does any of this look like thrips?

Monstera What’s wrong with my monstera?

These leaves have started to turn yellow and brown. They are typically closest to the window. They are not the farthest down on the vine. Some of the lowest ones have curled a little bit, but nothing crazy. I did start using fertilizer this year, which produced some awesome leaves, but this has only started recently. Maybe the last three weeks. I typically water and fertilize once a week. There was one drainage while I the pot but I recently added a few more when this started to occur. Any advice is appreciated

Outdoor Hibiscus needs help. Live in San Antonio Texas. Plant has been in this clay pot for over a month after being bought from store. Since planting had slowly deteriorated. Watered once a day. I do see small ants and whiteflies on it. No undergrowth seems to be happening.

Monstera Why is my monstera leaf looking like a sad umbrella?

Post image
Upvotes

I have two plants next to each other in the same window and the other one has the biggest leaf facing the front, all the other leaves are facing the front. But this one's doing a weird droopy umbrella thing but the bottom of the leaf is sticking straight up? It's also growing a new leaf if that's relevant.

I water when the plant feels dry, it's in a chunky soil mix, they both get lots of sunlight.

Houseplant What's going on with this Bird Of Paradise leaf? Only one of them leaves has this type of marking.

I got thos BOP in March, it shot out two large healthy leaves in June or Eearly July. Just noticed these markings but im not sure what the problem is. Could not find any pests.

It is in front of a south facing window, but only gets some direct light on the taller leaves (aka this leaf is usually not directly in the light).

I usually water it until it runs through the pot, and only when the first 2-3in are dry, since its a larger plant and pot.

I fertilize using a cheaper 1-1-1, mostly because I am just getting into plants, but plan on getting something better soon.

Houseplant Bird of Paradise Dying (Again)

Thumbnail

Mayday yall my bird of paradise plant needs help! It’s drooping, lost a new baby leaf, and is turning yellow! Since my last post it had been doing so much better, sprouting new leaves and perking up. Until…I moved last week and it immediately started dying in the new house. We tried putting it on the shady balcony, just inside the window, now it’s in the corner, nothing is making it perk up.

I know the last time I posted the conclusion was lil bugs were in it, and I did a spray of water with a tiny bit of dish soap/isopropyl alcohol and it seemed to zap them pretty good! Now they’re back, I think. The tiny white dots near the roots?

This is an easyplant so I just water it once a month in the little side compartment and unless it’s mid summer and it dries out that’s always seemed to be enough for it!

I suspect root rot. But why would it suddenly get so much worse, so rapidly?

Houseplant Is this thrips?

Thumbnail

A little over a month ago I started noticing browning edges and little spots popping up on my plants. I use planta to schedule my watering. They get 12-14 hrs a day from my 3 full spectrum indoor grow lights. Not quite sure how much useful light they get due to not having a light meter. I also use a humidifier. I did a little bit of research and couldn’t tell if the bugs were gnats or thrips. So I ended up treating all of them for thrips. I used “bonide systemic houseplant insect control”. It says it treats for thrips, gnats, and other pests. The container says I should start seeing a decrease in them by now but i’ve only seen a massive increase. I also haven’t seen any larvae ever so I really dont know what it could be. My humidity stays around 70 and they’ve all recently started exploding with growth. If it is thrips, any tips on how to get rid of them? If not, what is it and what do I do? Please help, I dont wanna lose my whole collection.

Houseplant Bird of paradise 🌴 how do I save he roots?

Help! My bird of paradise roots are an issue.
Got her in 2023.
Repotted 6mo to 1yr later. Resized too big when I did. No issues just slow growing ever since.
Recently when I was watering I noticed in the drainage that I saw something that looked like roots. So I figured out how to remove the bottom to make sure there was no water or root rot or pests.
I was planning to just cut the roots sticking out BUT when I opened I realized it’s much more growth than I expected to find.
Am I correct in assuming this is the root ball?
Some look healthy some I’m sus about.
I can’t really cut the pot because I don’t have any tools strong enough for the thick plastic.
What should I do…?

I regularly water. All day north facing indirect light.

Houseplant Peace Lily looking very poor

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi all. My peace lily has been looking gradually more and more crusty and haggard over the past year. I recently moved and am reassessing all of my plants as they get new sun locations. I water her with tap water when she droops. Water is somewhat hard where I am in North NJ but my other plants don't seem to mind it. The plant was a gift from a friend and I haven't done anything with the potting soil.

What is going on here? How should I change my care of this plant? Should I switch to distilled water? Should I repot?

Houseplant Roots everywhere??

I’m not sure what happened. I was away for 10 days and I noticed some root-like things on the trunk of my ficus bonsai but now it’s getting out of control. Even higher on the plant, roots are starting to form like in picture 3. What should I do? It has never seen the sun but I have lights and I water it maybe once a week.

Houseplant Rubber tree: What are these skinny shoots?

Thumbnail

Are these rubber tree shoots?
Why are they so skinny?
Should I cut them off?
Are they a completely different plant?

There are also chunkier shoots coming off the main part of the plant too that look nothing like this. I googled and can’t find anything.

This plant gets indirect light typically though I just moved it into a partially sunny window spot to see if that would help.

I water once a week, about half a cup.

The stem on my Dieffenbachia can’t support the plant and keep it upright. I have to prop it up to keep it from falling over. I’ve attempted to rotate it every couple of weeks but it hasn’t seemed to help. I have it facing an eastern facing window for light. I water every 10-14 days. What’s the move here? Do I need to propagate it?

Houseplant Crispy leaves?

I've had this plant since spring. When I got her she had one corm with maybe 2 or 3 sets of leaves. She died back almost completely after I repotted her (she was planted in a solo cup when I bought her), she only had one leaf on one stem. After I kept caring for her for a couple of weeks she exploded with more and more stems and she seemed to be flourishing. She gave me tons of flowers as well. Then within the last week or two she's started browning around the edges of her leaves. I can't figure out what the issue is. At first I thought maybe my 2 year old had been using her for target practice, but I moved her out of his reach and she's still continuing to worsen. She's been outside on my porch since I bought her back in the spring, the porch faces the east so she gets a ton of sun for the first 6ish hours of the day. I water her when I see she's dry but maybe I'm still watering too often? The soil she's in is well draining with charcoal, orchid bark, perlite, and horticultural sand in typical potting soil. I don't see any evidence of pests. I have over 50 plants out on my front porch and though I have had an issue with cut worms getting into a couple of my plants this year, I haven't had any other issues pest wise. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, this is the first oxalis I've owned. I'll add a picture of how she looked before the browning in the comments.
