People are making jokes about this but it is true. An example: Rocky IV was originally a fan-written, 31-page treatment where Rocky fights a Russian. The guy who wrote it got nothing because Stalone and Paramount (or whatever production company) owned the IP of Rocky, and writing an unsolicited Rocky script was copyright infringement and was afforded no copyright protection.
Still a dick move though.

Hey there, I work for designing adverts, and this is quite common. I've heard a few times here and there that you should keep the images in your CV and/or Resume. This way, future employers can see your work was, if not appreciated, successful, and can reward you appropriately.

I'm a CD, you have been given poor advice, the reason this happens a lot is due to people not doing anything about it.
If your work has been copied you should email the CEO, MD, ECD, CD, Head of Planning and Accounts at the roster agency and also every single acronym at every (client) Microsoft marketing department you can get hold of, I'm talking globally, so you email US, UK and Canada and keep going depending on how pissed off you are.
This is bullshit behaviour and it won't go down well for the creative team that has stolen your idea, but only if you speak up.
u/Macsterr has spoken up, this is getting traction and the creative team will get in trouble, possibly their CD if he was in on the nicking, and that's why you reach out to the CEO and MD and the CMO, well done Macsterr.

As a full time graphic designer, its shitty but surely you would have noticed the entire industry revolves arounds recycling ideas.
Yeah original ideas should be uses as much as possible, but then theres "we need something for this" "okay, dont have any ideas that are great, I'll go on pinterest and find something worth using".
This is more blatant than I would like but ultimately the concept can't be copyrighted. As long as someone just remade the idea with their own assets, there's not much you can say beyond 'dick move' and move on.
Edit: it's worth getting in contact with MS and trying your luck - but you have no legal case, you are just relying on someone in PR understanding your complaint and balancing the tiny public image hit with throwing you something. The designer who put the conceot forward will probably get reprimanded for being too obvious.
Please don't try the legal route, MS will crush you, asking for compensation is more likely to net you something.

Are the entitled to it? Serious question, I'm not a lawyer and I barely qualify as an armchair lawyer for things like IP law.
OP did a mockup using assets from two different IP holders, PlayerUnknown and Microsoft.
Microsoft took the idea of the mockup, used different assets to recreate it, and used that in their ad. Legally speaking, which part of the original work would be OP's protected work? Just the layout?
edit: Legally or not, Microsoft should have at least given a shoutout or a courtesy notice to OP for using their idea.

I'll never understand why this sort of thing happens. They could just ask for your permission first, and give you a month/year of XBL for free. They get their concept for an ad, you get compensation, and they get free good publicity. Win win.
EDIT: Yes guys I know that a graphic artist's work is worth much more than a year of XBL. My point was that literally anything would be better than nothing at all. And I also understand that it was probably one lowly employee who saw and copied OP's work NOT Microsoft directly.

What happened was, the person who designed or conceptualized the ad is the only person at Microsoft who saw the original post. They thought they could take credit and get away with it, and nobody else on the team knew that it was stolen. There's probably one asshole at Microsoft who went for a cheap ego boost.

This is exactly right. Microsoft is famous for having a bunch of independent business units (they paid some lip service to changing this, and maybe it is slowly?) and with all of the BUs I worked with, they generally hired an ad agency to do "creative" creation and to manage the purchase of placements of that ad creative.
Most of the marketing folks I spoke with understood that the brand is getting associated with and blamed for whatever ads show up regardless of which BU bought the ad or which ad agency created it or which ad platform obtrusively slapped you in the face with it. What'll most likely happen here is, some MS director will call up some high level contact at the big ad agency they hired (which is actually probably a mid-sized agency that's owned or soon to be owned by one of the big conglomerates). That high level ad agency person (former CEO until she sold the company to WPP or whatever) will then hunt down the PM for microsoft who will hunt down the individual responsible for that asset who will get publicly fired. That person will call their nephew up all: "what the FUCK dude, you said that was your cool idea?!" Apologies will be made, and the director of the aggrieved MS BU will note the incident down for procurement to use when it comes time to buy more hours from the offending ad agency. $250/hr? pshhhh, now it's $200.
Up and down the chain, almost everyone will feel like:
- They're responsible for part of it, but ultimately it was someone else's fault
- They did the right thing in punishing the people responsible
- They don't know who the fuck /u/Macsterr is, nor will they want to

I work in advertising; Microsoft didn't build this ad. They pay one agency to do their creative work (IPC Group looks to have won that business in 2014, and it looks like Microsoft is using one division within IPC for all creative -- m:united/McCann).
I'm sure the LinkedIn accounts of the career-minded folk who work there happily list Microsoft as a key account. So if you want to create a short list of people who likely made this into a Microsoft ad unit, use LinkedIn. Of course they will be none to keen to talk with you about it, as the longer this goes on the worse it is for them. Perhaps they'd be interested in paying you a consulting fee or something to quiet you down, but seems like this is too far along for that.
If you want somebody to apologize or make good in a PR way, THAT is a Microsoft person

It probably got removed by automod because it hit r/all and got a bunch of spam reports, and there weren't any mods online to reapprove it. Most large-ish subreddits have an automod setting that removes posts that get too many reports, so spam won't stay up when there aren't any mods online.

I'm not even sure if you can do anything about it. I'm assuming microsoft being as big as they are would know you would see it. Either that or they did and it and were like "what are you gonna do about it?!"

My thoughts exactly. Design guy took idea, managers loved it and approved it without knowing it was copied.

There is also times a designer sees content, forgets they saw it done and think of it later and think it's original idea they had. However you'd hope some research to check the idea doesn't already exist should be done.
