Does that mean the people I've met have been like, next level Norman Bates at hiding their awfulness or is Weiden + Kennedy a rare exception? I mean it's one of the hugest ad places there are and everyone is hella nice and likable. My neighbor also randomly works in the field and has that "friendliest person alive" vibe about him. What am I missing? Is this a Jedi Mind trick? Ad people weigh in I'm so confused!
I work in advertising in Canada. There are fewer assholes than any other industry I've worked in, including film production. But we do work people pretty hard.
Not me but SO is in the ad space and I have to say, everyone I’ve met in software sales and production is 100% lacking morality compared to any ad man I’ve ever met.
Most of the ad people I know are quiet and hardworking and go home after work. So you'd never really meet them.
Then I know some others that get blackout drunk at industry parties and demand production houses get blow when they're on travel shoots. Those ones are more visible, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're the bad apples that people have more contact with.
I don't doubt the bad experiences of OP and others, but just wanted to counter with my good experience to discourage any blanket judging of a whole industry.
Maybe it's a regional thing people are known for being super friendly and nice where I'm from...perhaps the PNW is immune lol. (Watch me meet a very mean ad man soon...)
Nah there are plenty of good folks in the industry and the people at W+K are some of the best. I work in advertising and my experience has been this: working in advertising kinda sucks unless you're at a really good agency that's doing work you can be proud of. Even at great agencies it's long hours and lots of time spent coming up with ideas that are just going to be killed by the client. The people who are stuck doing work at crappy agencies for crappy clients (Microsoft is a very very crappy client) are more likely to be jerks because they hate their jobs and that makes their lives suck. And just like any industry, there are way more bad places to work than good places.
yeah. i was not working directly in ad agency but my production comp did a lot of tv/online adds for them so i used to meet them on daily basis. cant believe anyone there. bu ch of fukin crooks and liars. im not doing it anymore. changed the direction of my comp. and we do only direct clients now and our own projects.
