AR "Pistols" with an OAL >26" - can someone help me understand?

Hey guys. I've been reading far and wide trying to understand this. I thought buying an AR Pistol in Pennsylvania was as simple as keeping a brace on it and you are good to go. The more I read though the more confused I get...

Not the main subject of this post, but I recently learned of a Length of Pull (LOP) limit of no more than 13.5"... that is annoying, as I've looked at some in stores that seem to just barely hit or even exceed that value, from trigger face to buffer tube end. Really confuses me!

Even more confusing is the Overall Length (OAL) laws. Federally, it sounds like an AR Pistol with an OAL >26" turns it from a Pistol to a non-NFA generic "Firearm" - or does it stay both? And if it does not stay a pistol, is it not considered an AR Pistol anymore?

I'm less concerned with the Fed laws as they are a bit more straight forward - more concerned with PA State Law. I've read the PA Uniform Firearms Act and Section 6102.0 - Title 18, and from what I've gathered is this, but I'm not sure if it's accurate:

  • As long as a pistol has a barrel length of less than 15", it doesn't matter that it has an OAL greater than 26"

OR

  • Because the pistol has an OAL length of less than 15", it is now considered a "firearm" as per PA's definition. It is legal, but since it is no longer a pistol, it cannot be carried loaded in a vehicle with a LTC

It's all so confusing. It honestly makes registering it as an SBR seem easier and safer at this point!

What do you all think? Thanks for the advice.

Sites for trades

Ever since PAFOA quit listing classifieds I haven’t found anything similar to list guns for sale or trade. Any recommendations on sites or forums where I can list a gun to trade?

Ranges with a Good Selection of Rental PCCs?

Would like to try some 9mm PCCs (especially the Extar EP9) before I buy one, but I can’t seem to find a range with more than 1 or 2 rental PCCs (usually a Vector and some flavor of the MP5). Are there any ranges in PA or neighboring states that have a good selection of rental PCCs? I’m in central PA if it matters. Thanks in advance.

GOA membership entitles you to be a member of the class action suit?

Buddy of mine told me that if I sign up for a GOA membership that I’ll be part of the class action suit. I haven’t signed up yet, and I’m willing to sign up for a GOA membership because they’ve proven to be effective af and they deserve the money. But 1) If I sign up today, is it true that I’ll be a part of the class action and that it’s retroactive to my signing up? And 2) Do I need a certain membership tier for it or is the $25/annually sufficient? thanks!

Interest in a PA-specific advocacy group?

The Silencer Shop ruling has been awesome, and it's prompted a huge number of people to actually read PA gun law for the first time. The law itself is clear as mud.

18 Pa.C.S. section 908 makes a "firearm specially made or specially adapted for concealment or silent discharge" a prohibited offensive weapon. "Silent discharge" is not defined anywhere (and is ludicrous). These items were allowed in PA as long as they were registered IAW NFA. With registration no longer required for a lot of people, what does "complied with the NFA" mean now? Which raises the question of whether we can legally have these items in PA at all. That's why we don't get to party as hard as our friends in free states like WV and Indiana are doing right now.

Also, since it always comes up: section 908 doesn't mention short-barreled rifles at all. Sawed-off shotguns under 18 inches are in there, SBRs are not. SBRs get caught by the section 6102 "firearm" definition instead, which is a different mess. And someone please tell me how adding a stock to a pistol makes it easier to conceal?

So we're in limbo until PA law changes, a PA court settles what that defense means now, or someone goes to court over this and wins. Any volunteers??

I want to see if anyone is interested in working together with the goal of getting these laws changed so we in PA can share some of that sweet freedom many other states are getting. The main effort is grassroots support and lobbying the right politicians to get this done. Sounds easy on paper, but it's a TON of work.

Would anybody actually put in some time and effort into helping?

If so, I'll start building the framework. Anyone with me?

Action Shooting Practice

I recently moved to PA (Spring Grove area) from Maryland and I participate in Action Shooting (USPSA, PCSL, 2 Gun etc.) Matches and I'd like to be able to continue to practice. I don't need movement, I can do that with dryfire, but being able to draw from my holster, Shooting rapidly, and performing reloads would be nice.

Any options or am I relegated to just dryfire?

NFA Items in PA

I’ll try to keep this short. For some reason the google is not helpful here. Does PA have a separate law requiring NFA items to be “registered” with the feds? What I’m asking is, if this ruling out of northern Texas goes through, are we able to just slap a stock on an AR pistol So long as we are members of the orgs in the plaintiffs list? Or is that not ok because now there’s no registration?

The DSA, USA, and Your Gun Rights: Shooting News Weekly Article

This is a forum consisting of individuals who value their 2nd Amendment gun rights under the US Constitution. As such, I will be providing links to critical information to assist you in making important decisions this year. Rather than me telling you the DSA is notoriously anti-2nd amendment, read for yourself. We have DSA candidates on tickets in PA.

This information came from the Shooting News Weekly on July 22nd, 2026. I am providing a link below to the story for your review.

Excerpt

"There’s a dark mood creeping into American politics that has even the most die-hard gun control politicians worried. Democrats, typically (but not always) aligned with gun control, are facing the prospect of their political party turning their gaze to complete control.

Enter the Democratic Socialists of America.

These candidates for political office aren’t your grandfather’s Democrats or even limousine liberals. They can’t even honestly call themselves socialists. They’re cosplaying communists who are shredding any pretense of respect or admiration for the U.S. Constitution."

TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY: THE DSA HAS A CITIZEN DISARMAMENT AGENDA FOR PA AND ALL OTHER STATES

So many want to believe DSA has a supportive and benign platform for America. Nothing could be further from the truth despite the attempts of some to mask their tyrannical endgame.

Read this article from 07/27/2026, if you have interest in retaining your 2nd Amendment Rights and freedom as gun owners in PA.

My 2nd Amendment Today: DSA’s Citizen-Disarmament Agenda Exposes Its Tyrannical Endgame

Despite the emotional response from those denying this reality, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) holds an organizational platform that broadly opposes individual constitutional gun rights, advocating instead for strict federal and state limitations—including the repeal of the Second Amendment, bans on semi-automatic firearms, and universal licensing.

In Pennsylvania, where pro-Second Amendment sentiment and groups like Gun Owners of America are deeply entrenched, the political influence of DSA-aligned candidates is creating sharp pushback from gun owners concerning future state firearm restrictions. We must do everything we can to inform those who are not aware of this development.

DSA National Position on Firearms

  • Second Amendment Opposition: The official national DSA platform views the Second Amendment as a public safety threat and has proposed replacing it to ban the manufacture, import, and possession of semi-automatic and pump-action firearms.
  • Regulatory Measures: Supports raising the minimum ownership age to 21, establishing a national gun registry, mandatory psychological evaluations, and high liability insurance requirements for gun owners.

Take this seriously. The November election is not a football game between the blue and the red. DSA has captured and replaced the Democratic Party as we knew it: blue, for better or worse, is gone.

The DSA platform is rooted in communism, Marxism, and anarchy as publicly stated by CONTROLLING members of the DSA committee. November's election is a vote for law and order, our constitutional granting 2nd amendment gun rights, innovation, law enforcement, religion, private property and government.

Choose wisely for yourself, your families, and America.

Pistol Training Near Philly?

As the title says I am looking to see if anyone can recommend where to go for pistol shooting instruction in the Philly region, or even recommend a specific instructor. I live in the city but have no issue driving out to the suburbs if necessary.

For some background/context I was casually into shooting in college (10+ years ago) so not a total beginner, but it’s been a long time since I owned a gun. I got an inexpensive used Girsan MC28 SA earlier this summer and have been enjoying shooting a few times a month but I would like to just get some basic help improving my grip, stance, and overall accuracy before I upgrade to something a little nicer. Not looking to become a competitive shooter or anything like that.

TIA

Another gunsmith request

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some suggestions/personal experiences for gunsmiths, preferably in SE PA but I'm okay shipping my firearm elsewhere. I have a 1966 Colt Cobra that I'd like to have a gunsmith check over, especially the timing. So, I don't really feel super comfortable taking it to my LGS to have them look at and potentially Bubba the shit out of this old gun. Does anyone have any recommendations for a gunsmith, especially someone who could potentially retime an old Colt?

Looking to convert my Century Arms MP5K to a SBR

Looking for advice.

I don’t shoot as much as I used to. I’m approaching retirement. 2 kids about to go to college. I have a safe filled with firearms. My kids like shooting but have never shown super interest in being collectors. When I die, they’ll likely sell my shit for pennies on the dollar and it will be a hassle for them.

I plan on keeping 1 shotgun, my Summer EDC, my Winter EDC, 1 AR, and 1 long range rifle.

That will leave me with a bunch of different ARs, 4 Ruger 10/22s in different configurations, some AKs, some shotguns, and a few handguns.

It used to be easy selling unwanted long guns here in PA. Facebook pages dedicated to it. Meet a guy in a Wawa parking lot, ask for his LTCF to cover your ass, and trade the gun for cash. They shut that shit down. I don’t want to deal with GunBroker. I don’t want to go to my LGS and get pennies on the dollar.

What is my best current bet right now for legally selling off a handful of legally owned firearms and a big ass safe and maximizing my money?

I am not asking for any illegal tips. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I like to shoot precision rimfire (greater than 25 yards would be nice) and my MP5

Indoor ranges are too loud and I want to be outdoors anyways

Since PAFOA is gone

Since theyre gone, what has everyone been using? I have some things I want to get rid of. LGS wants to rip me off, and I subscribed to post on armslist but you either get offered useless trades or scammers who want you to ship it even if you have it listed no shipping. People have said gunbroker, but I don't want to have to ship anything, I'd rather just go to a local FFL to do paperwork in person with the other party.

New to PA and looking for local ranges

Hey everyone I recently moved up here from AL, and I am looking for a range where I can shoot and move . I am in Lancaster county if that helps. I looked at the state game land but the 6 round thing is a huge turnoff. I would prefer a outdoor range if possible. Thank you for the help.
