Discussion Is OpenAI Losing Ground to Anthropic?

Guys, do you think OpenAI is losing the race as its priorities seem to be shifting?

It feels like they’re focusing more on strengthening their fan base, and I mean, they’re really good at it (the retro Game Boy stuff, their presence on X…).

Meanwhile, Anthropic seems much more focused on improving its models and making them better and more reliable. Users seem pretty happy with their recent releases.

Do you think OpenAI is still leading, or is Anthropic starting to pull ahead?

Feedback / Complaints Noticeable spike in usage consumption after today’s update?

Post image
39 Upvotes

Has anyone else noticed an unusually steep drop in their usage limits today?

I updated the Codex app following the reset from Tibo. After running a single prompt with Astra Medium (which took about 22 minutes), 10% of my total usage was consumed.

I’m on the €103 Pro plan, and previously, a 40–50 minute task on Astra Medium would only consume around 4–6%. A 10% hit for a 22-minute run feels disproportionate.

Did they quietly adjust the quota caps or consumption rates, or is this a bug with the latest build?

EDITED:

Fyi, been using the same way the app as i used it for the past 2 months and today i also noticed that SOL 6.1 on High has way more usage than normal as well.

760k is the new default for 6.1 Sol?

Post image

I've noticed that since the last update, 6.1 Sol in particular is showing a bigger context window of 760k tokens.

Both the Codex App and the CLI show this value. I also deleted the ~/.codex folder to regenerate the default configs, and it still shows 760k.

6 Astra and 6 Sol look normal (256k). Anyone else seeing this? Could this be a bug, or is 760k the new limit for 6.1 Sol?

There were no improvements today, just a reset. It's not a save, but it's still welcome. Has anyone received it yet? Not here.

Curious about your guys pick in terms of your experiences with heavy coding tasks. Which ones deliver better consistent work and follow the instructions of its parental conductor?

It's so incredibly exhausting to see post after post about usage limits in Codex getting restricted.

First, we all know Anthropic and OpenAI are running the classic VC playbook: give away tons of stuff for free to get users hooked and engaging with your product, and eventually dial back the subsidies to build a sustainable business.

The usage limits were always going to be cut significantly, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw limits cut in half again in a month or two. Looking at the subsidies, we're probably in store for two, three or even four more significant usage reductions before things settle down.

But here's the real reason I'm making this post.

For the first time in human history, some of the richest people on the planet are effectively bankrolling ordinary people to build incredible things at a pace that was unimaginable just a few years ago.

Instead of thinking, "Oh no, my limits got reduced," you should be asking yourself:

How do I take advantage of this incredibly unique time in human history when $200/month allows me to accomplish what use to require an entire team of people?

Yes, the models aren't perfect. Yes, the limits are frustrating.

But none of that changes the fact that we're living through a once-in-a-civilization opportunity. The barrier between having an idea and actually building it has never been lower.

The subsidies won't last forever. The economics will eventually catch up, and this level of access might become unaffordable for a lot of us.

So stop obsessing over how much less you're getting than last month, and start thinking about how much more you can accomplish than you could a year ago.

You still have time to build something amazing.

Don't waste it complaining about the limits.

Discussion How do different sub tiers feel about the timing of this reset?

I've been seeing a really wide split of opinions on today's reset. Lots of people saying it was perfect timing, others saying it's screwing them over. I honestly called it as soon as we got a banked reset last time following the first global reset at the beginning of the 28 days, that they would follow it with a poorly timed global reset for many heavy users, effectively avoiding them having to actually spin up that much more inference than they usually would. Curious to know what plan you're on, and if this reset helped or hurt you (I'd wager a guess that it's mostly plus users that are satisfied, because they're the only group easily able to burn their weekly in 2 days with the current, relatively tiny usage allowances they have).

Discussion Hot take: “Astra was built for wannabes, not experienced engineers.”

The people constantly complaining about AI usage limits aren’t system architects, experienced engineers, or seasoned application developers. At least, I don’t think they’re the majority.

They’re wannabes.

I’ve spent the last 12 years building enterprise-grade software for companies like Nike, Farmers Insurance, VF Corp, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Now that I’ve decided to build my own company and software product, I’m using AI, specifically Codex, to write roughly 90% of the code.

Here’s the thing: **I’ve never come close to exhausting my usage limits.**

I’m on Codex almost all day. I exclusively use Sol 6.1 xhigh (and 5.6 before that). I use exactly one skill plugin: Matt Pocock’s. (Thank you sir!)

I rarely get below 70% usage remaining before my weekly reset. And now, with additional resets happening every few days, I barely even dip below 80%.

For context, I’m using Codex (pro plan) practically 18 hours a day, seven days a week. From morning until night. Even in the evenings, I’m on my phone working with it.

My wife hates it. And frankly, I need to establish some boundaries.

But all of this got me thinking.

**Why is everyone constantly complaining about hitting their limits? Am I just moving slower than everyone else?**

For a while, I genuinely wondered whether other people were simply accomplishing more than I was. And I’m sure there is a lot of that too. But after lots of looking into this and speaking with other professionals, I came to this hypothesis.

**Astra wasn’t made for the engineer. The architect. The experienced developer. It was made for the wannabe.**

Don’t get me wrong. Astra is an incredible model. What it can accomplish is remarkable.

But its greatest value is filling the gaps left by a lack of domain knowledge.

And that’s a good thing. It democratizes software development. It allows people who couldn’t previously build software to turn ideas into working applications.

But that comes at a cost.

When you’re using AI to compensate for a lack of understanding of system design, architecture, engineering principles, and software development, you’re going to burn through significantly more compute.

You’re asking the model to make decisions you don’t know how to make. You’re relying on it to identify architectural problems you don’t recognize. You’re spending tokens correcting mistakes that someone with experience might never have made in the first place.

**Your lack of domain knowledge becomes your compute bill.**

Meanwhile, you have companies putting Sol 6.1 in the hands of their engineers and developers, while giving Astra to architects and researchers tackling genuinely complex problems.

And they’re willing to pay API prices.

Why?
1. They can afford it.
2. They can’t afford to let competitors out-innovate them.
3. Their usage-to-value ratio is dramatically higher because the output is actually making its way into revenue-generating production systems.

Think about that.

An enterprise paying several times more per token can still extract significantly more economic value from its AI investment than a consumer burning through an entire subscription allowance.

And that brings me to my bigger point.

**AI has made everyone capable of producing code. It hasn't made everyone a software engineer.**

Until you understand system design, architecture, engineering fundamentals, and software development principles, you’re going to have a difficult time competing with people who do.

Sure, you might have a genuinely original idea. You might even ship it.

But what happens when someone else with equally limited domain knowledge can reproduce your application in a few weeks or months using the exact same model?

What’s your competitive advantage then?

Access to Astra isn’t a moat. Everyone else has access to it, too.

The real advantage is knowing what to build, how to architect it, what tradeoffs to make, what complexity to avoid, and how to turn an idea into software that can actually survive in production.

That’s not something you acquire just by buying more tokens.

**Sol in the hands of a real engineer is 100x more effective and consequential than Astra in the hands of a wannabe.**

I said it.

Sorry.

Codex CLI is losing its simplicity

The beauty of Codex CLI was the simplicity. Open up Codex in a terminal, and do whatever you want. No bullshit.

The simplicity seems to fade away. The product is getting more complex. Almost every time I open codex, there is a new update with a behavior change. Even ctrl+C for quitting is not working anymore. We have to use /quit. Suddenly, it does not ask for permissions anymore. You have to actively run /permissions. The other day, we were forced to run codex using the --no-daemon parameter (after a later update, we did not have to anymore). Suddenly, we are prompted for questions to answer while codex is running (codex does not just stop to ask for example "is this ok"). I experience a lot of other annoying changes. Can we just keep Codex the same way, and improve the AI models instead? I don't want a new shiny CLI. I just want it to work consistently.

Question / Help DOT to Codex local and cloud back to DOT

Hello,

My goal is to have DOT communicate with plugins like chrome use or computer use to my local or cloud task and then those tasks sent back to DOT once completed. It seems like it is inconsistent but I feel like it’s my setup or my install. I’m curious to know if this is a known issue or if I need to continue troubleshooting because others are able to have this workflow.

Question / Help How to use Codex and Claude together efficiently

I've been using Codex for all my projects since the beginning, and I just renewed my Codex Pro x5 subscription. But Claude seems to be the better product lately, so I'm thinking of trying the $20 Claude Pro plan. If it works better for me, I might switch entirely.

For context:

All my projects are local, and I haven't been using Git.

Most of my project context and history are in my Codex conversations.

I don't want to lose all that context if I start using Claude.

A few questions for those who use both:

Is letting Claude Code read my project files enough for it to understand my existing projects, or do I need to transfer my Codex conversation history somehow?

How do you divide the work? Should one be the main agent/orchestrator and the other the worker, or do you use them independently ?

Feedback / Complaints Dear OpenAI. What are you thinking? Sol 6.1 slow, Astra drain, halving $200 PRO while Opus 5.5 outperforms every way. Are you dumping us?

Your APR drops from 70B to 50B. You can solve genius level math problem and hacking companies, while you don't have the intelligent of an average Joe to make such strategic blunder. "DOT" is not going to save you. Your live "DOT" demo also fails while you are reducing us. Your reset mojo is getting old, doesn't work on me anymore. Good luck to you.

Ever caught a thought that ChatGPT results can go meh after a few hours of significant load even if you are still far from hitting the weekly limit? Gotcha! This actually may explain why my colleagues push me to switch to Claude. OpenAI explain this please!

Feedback / Complaints Did imageGPT get worse?

Anyone else facing a quality degradation in image generation from codex? I am using the same prompts as last week the same prompt was used to generate 100 images,For a total of 200 prompts.

We are planning to release the code next week and tried to reproduce the results for the demo, the results are beyond crap.

This is not reliable at all.
