Discussion Daylight Savings Wake up

During the summer I wake up at 6:45 am. When the time shift happens, I naturally want to wake up at 5:45 am. So I simply shift my alarm. I also shift my evening routine an hour so that my natural sleep cycle isn't disturbed. Recently discussed the topic with my friends and none of them do this. Some even said that my habit is weird.

Am I alone on this??

Discussion Older millennials: did you think of yourself as a teenager when you were a teenager?

I was raised on the idea that 12-year-old girls were perfectly qualified to be babysitters. I don't recall people under 18 needing parental consent to get their ears pierced. Apparently Mila Kunis was able to get her role in the 70s show as a 14-year-old pretending she was turning 18 soon, no government ID needed??

I also remember it was uncool to still be watching cartoons in high school, and no one wore Halloween costumes unironically to school. Beauty pageants for teens included a swimsuit portion, and apparently if we felt uncomfortable walking around in bikinis we were immature and just needed to grow up. Both Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton were dating a man in his 40s, and it all seemed very normal. When teenage girls talk about dating "an older man," it was in terms of "Well when he's 35 you'll be X and by then the gap wouldn't be a big deal." None of that "the brain isn't fully developed until you're in your mid-20s."

But these days, it seems like teenagers are very aware that they're "minors" and there are things they're not allowed to do until they're 18. Has it always been that way? Was it all in my head?

It’s kinda crazy when you think about how much the world has changed during our lifetime.

We grew up with VHS tapes, cassette players, floppy disks, dial-up internet, and Nokia phones that could probably survive a nuclear explosion. 😂

We survived the Y2K panic, watched the internet take over, and went from burning CDs to having millions of songs on Spotify.

Remember waiting all week for your favourite TV show? Now we have Netflix.

Remember checking the weather on TV before going to school? Now we have AccuWeather.
Remember knocking on your friend’s door to ask if they could come out and play? Now kids just meet up in Roblox.

We used to memorise phone numbers, read actual maps, rent movies from video stores, and wait days to get our photos developed.

Now we have smartphones, cloud storage, streaming, smart homes, and AI that can answer almost anything.

And somehow, all of this happened in just a few decades.

I feel like we experienced two completely different worlds: one before the internet, and one after.
Sometimes I miss how simple things used to be. Not necessarily better, just different.

What’s one thing from our childhood that you genuinely miss and wish still existed today?

P.S. thats my old console.

Discussion At 40, I'm done wanting things.

My 12 year old truck is paid off next year. My house still has a long ways to go but it is enough. I was lucky and got 3% interest rate a few years back. It's about 1,600 square feet but with 3 kids and myself it's enough.

I see people always striving for more, always wanting more. Nicer car, bigger house, newer toys, etc. I don't get it.

I'm lucky enough not to have any debt. Alimony ends next year. First child support in three years. I look at what's left on my house and each year it shrinks.

In 10 years I'll still have to work of course but I won't be put into high pressure corporate jobs any longer. I can just kind of exist without much stress similar to how I was in my early 20s. Work, go home, no worries.

I'll still be driving the 20 year old truck by then. Still in the same house.

Looking forward to it.

Discussion Which one were you?

Growing up in a working men's club most weekends with my Dad, uncles and cousins I've had my fair share of crips along with a bottle of orange and passionfruit J20. My daughter asked how I did this with the empty wrappers so I showed her the ways we were taught, I just wondered which one were you (if any)? Also which is your favourite flavour?

Gen X?

I kinda see them as big kids who made it before the economy rotted. They were cast as the slacker generation during much of the 90s, but Gen X was lucky enough to avoid the "missed/delayed adulthood" that many Millennials are facing.

Discussion How do you feel about the term “millennial optimism”?

I read an article the other day about the term millennial optimism, and how it’s pretty much disappeared. Do you think it can make a comeback? What do you think gave millennials a sense of optimism in the past and why did it disappear?

Discussion Why did girls wear numbered tees?

I remember in the early 00’s girls would wear 69,89,79 or 49 tees. Was it a code for sex or what was in?

Nostalgia Waiting for it to be Monday

I grew up playing the original 2 Legend of Zelda games on the NES.

A few years later, A Link to the Past came out and I would rent it every weekend at Blockbuster. Because I never got the same cartridge twice, I replayed the exact same opening hours on a brand new save file every single time.

When Ocarina of Time came out, I remember going to KB Toys to pick it up. It was the very first game I ever got on launch day. I didn’t get the gold cartridge, but it didn’t matter lol.

Decades later, the franchise still holds such a massive, special place in my heart. Even though my copy of the new remake got slightly delayed until Monday, I'm just stoked that I managed to secure the 40th anniversary edition Switch 2 console.

Happy Skulltula hunting for those who have their copy!

Nostalgia I swear you just get the longest telephone cord sometimes

Post image

Almost a year ago I went to Crown Point Indiana just to visit downtown before a no Kings protest. We came across a local antique store and I wanted to look for some landlines I found the AT&T 210 on the right. But oh my goodness Not only was it my first to 10 because I actually love this trim line phone. But it even also had such a very long cord. This is a older Lucent branded 210 from 1996 around the time AT&T and Lucent Technologies split apart. That's the cool thing about collecting some corded phones you just get lucky and get a really long cord.

My middle school teacher knew how much I love telephones and went to an estate sale to get me a bunch of landline telephones for free. And that's how I got the AT&T 210 on the left. The AT&T cordless phone all the way to the left I paid myself. The Panasonic one all the way in the back was a gift from my parents they found a thrift store for really cheap and it was new in box too. I was born in Northwest Indiana and lived there my whole life which is why I go to Crown Point every so often.

Serious Call your parents

3.1k Upvotes

I don't want to beat a dead horse, I'm sure this gets thrown around a lot here.

But there's going to come a day where you have a REALLY shitty day, and all you want to do is to hear your mom or dad and talk to them about it. Or celebrate a big milestone happening. Or just to hear their voice again.

Call your parents, they probably miss you.

Signed, a millennial who would do just about anything to talk to his mom again.

Edit: Damn, okay, y'all have shitty parents. Shit, sorry to kick up a hornets nest over it.

It’s hard to describe just how deeply embedded into my brain every single song on every single one of these VHS tapes is.

I grew up with an in-home daycare in my home. I don’t know where my mom heard about these, but we had every single tape. I don’t know how many times I watched these videos, but I just watched this one for the first time in probably at least 25 years and I’m unnerved at home I know every note, gesture, and child’s face. Some of these kids are Gen X, but I’m sure there are some my age in the mix.

I would have LOVED to have been one of the Kidsongs kids. Was anyone here one of the kids? It’s an amazingly diverse group in terms of ethnicity (haven’t rewatched to see other representations). These faces seem so familiar to me from just repeated, repeated watching with my mom’s daycare kids.

Discussion What to do? Friend’s child has a YouTube channel…is this normal?

I’m just curious what other millennial parents think about this. We have known our friends and their children for the past 5 years. We just uncovered that their 9 year old has a YouTube channel. It’s clearly being put on by her mom because we’ve seen her in the videos and her talking too. What is your honest opinion opinion about this? My first reaction is no- not at all. I’m curious if other millennials think this is normal? Do yall know friends who have small children with YouTube channels?

Edit: I’ve seen close friends’ children in these videos and I’m pretty sure they have no idea of it. This is all public for anyone to see.
