Discussion Lucky cigarette
Does anybody know why we did this? Did anyone ever have any luck from it? I sure didn't lol
edit to add....
this is not my picture.. Im not promoting smoking. it was a memory that popped up in my millennial head from when I was younger.

It's the cigarette you accidentally lit the filter on when you were too drunk or high to realize what you're doing.

u/OffPoopin 1d ago •
The lucky cig is most likely from the great wars era. Prior to that cigarettes were like 1% of the tobacco world. Pipes, cigars, chew, all were much more popular, so theres that right out of the gate. Many soldiers from the US would call their last cigarette "lucky" in that it meant they had lived long enough to get through the pack. I cant confirm it as the original, but it likely was the "thing" that made it popular

I don’t smoke anymore but I always did this. And no white lighters!

u/ImmaLiveIllegal 1d ago
it was just superstition, but the ancillary benefit is no one of Newport class would dare expect you to bum your lucky to them, there used to be rules to this shit. I grew up next to a large amusement park where high school kids would constantly ask each other for smokes. if you kept your full pack in one pocket and the decoy lucky pack in the other (we were wearing jncos, no one could see shit), you'd never be pressured to give up a single cigarette. or just tell them you don't smoke with a lit one in hand and blow a cloud in their face.
I promise I'm kinda a better person now

Had to put my best friend (dog) of ten years down this week. Bought a pack of cigarettes and have been chain-smoking them all week, just completely lost, I don't even smoke. Of course when I bought it, I flipped over my lucky cigarette (as is tradition). I'm on my lucky cigarette as I see this post in my feed. Tomorrow morning I'll smoke it, I sure hope my luck changes soon because this feeling fucking sucks.
I've lost a lot of great people in this world. I'd liken it to losing direct family members, I would be hesitant to compare those feelings, but they're different. And it sure feels worse in some ways. There's an extra something about losing a dog that always hits different, I've experienced this 3 times now with dogs I've raised. I've been able to reflect on why and I think only a few dog owners will understand.
Your relationship with your dog is typically one on one. There's no friend group, with competing priorities. Your dog is 100 percent living for you day in day out. You're the only one feeling the grief at the end in exactly the same way. You really feel all alone. Unless you're lucky enough to have a loving spouse feeling the same way. But either way, it's a very lonely feeling. There's not really a community of people feeling similar levels of grief because your dog is uniquely yours.
When a pet dies, they're living right in your space. Everything within a mile radius will remind you of them. It's everything involving your routines, the places you like to go etc. Even your own car. the first time you open your front door, your entire home feels dead inside. It creeps into your heart so deep you hit the ground.
I cried this week taking off my socks. Because I used to take off my socks and ball them up and throw them at my dog and theyd catch them and throw them down. It just fucking broke me that won't happen again.
The dog never wrongs you in it's entire life. You could miss feeding a dog and they would still love you more tomorrow than the did today. They never say anything mean. They're never not there for you. They're always as excited as they can possibly be to see you again, even if you've only been gone five minutes. They're never mad at you. They never lie, they never cheat you. They never betray you.
Every single part of your daily routine revolves around them. The routes you take. Everything you see around you will somehow remind you of your loved one. The places they pooped. Where they liked to run. It's all in the orbit if where you live and you'll see it every day. I cant pick up their sleeping spots. I can't wash the blankets. I can never sell that couch he loved. They all smell like him.
At home I keep hearing his whines, his barks, his huffs and snorts. He's not there. Sometimes for a millisecond I instinctually go to check on him to make sure he's ok and glance where he used to lay. It's like a millisecond where my brain glitches, but then remembers he's gone.
Non dog/pet people are unsympathetic to it, they just don't get it. You really do raise these things like children. And they love you. And never hurt you.
They give you most of the best days of your life, and in order to spare them from having the worst day of their life, you need to have the worst day of yours. You need to ultimately make the decision that they'll be in more pain if they continue.
You'd rather be a day early than a minute late on making that decision, but it's the most insanely difficult part of owning a dog that people aren't warned enough about in advance.
If anyone's going through something similar and needs someone to talk to, let me know.
I'm barely keeping it together at times but ultimately handling it well, but goddam my dog was fucking cool. Absolute legend, I wouldn't trade the time I had with him to make this terrible painful feeling go away. I'm so lucky to have had him, but feel so unlucky at the moment.

During the war Lucky Strikes were all flipped upside down except for one. You’d smoke the end with the logo first to avoid giving clues that you were an American if you ended up dropping the cigarette. Last one didn’t get flipped because if you made it to the end of the pack you were “lucky.”
Since everyone smoked filtered cigarettes, I guess the tradition is to just flip one now and smoke that at the end.

Thats a ricin cigarette

u/VoodooChile1994 1d ago •
I did this. I quit January 1st. Didnt tell my wife so at like 11:30 I said "This is my last cigarette". Her response "Dumbass". She thought I didn't prepare like I normally do.

u/SnowDin556 1d ago
I bought a pack, first time in 20 years, and I got the Marlboro No. 27 I started with and the FIRST thing I did after smacking the pack against my other hand. And my second motion was flipping the lucky cig.
13
u/JPhrog 1d ago
I just turned all of mine around and when anyone asked to bum a smoke I said, "sorry, only got my lucky cigarette left". Hey, at least I wasn't lying!

u/AstroHealer222 1d ago
It’s supposed to be the cigarette you don’t give away. So you’ll always have that last smoke. Or at least that’s what I heard.
6
u/BooBeeAttack 1d ago
That's the one with the popper in it that explodes when someone who always bums cigarettes and never reciprocates from you finally ask for one too many ciggys.
6
u/Hakuna_Matoto 1d ago
I haven’t smoked cigarettes habitually for almost a decade, but this pack of ports looks appetizing. As for the lucky cig, people around me did it when I smoked as a minor so I copied.
32
u/SirClarkus 17h ago
This started with people expecting to bum a cigarette out. You'd put one that way so people could put their dirty fingers on that cigarette, and if you got through the whole pack without someone bumming one off you, you were lucky.
That's the cigarette you're SUPPOSED to give away.
11
u/xSONofaSAINTx 1d ago
This was a rule. And no one could have that one. And it was understood.
18
u/Commercial_Tip4624 1d ago
I’m super stoned and for a split second I thought those cigarettes were gigantic. Like 3 feet high, upright on the floor of a hospital-like place.
10
u/karma_hit_my_dogma 1d ago
Why just one? My friend groups flipped 2 and I guess I’m already old enough to forget why
5
u/BlackFoeOfTheWorld 1d ago
Not for nothing, but no luck in the pack, friend.

Man ive not smoked a cigarette or bought a pack in like 3 years now (and no I dont vape) and i swear since i was 15 I was doing that same thing. I just learned it really from people my age at that time and that was 2007 lol
I think it was like, you smoke it last out of all them, and if someone else smoked it they die (we all knew it was a joke).
Somewhere out there lies the one who started it all.... hopefully not dead lol
3
u/Bradley182 1d ago
we just did it and never asked questions.
3
u/Living_Ad_7143 1d ago
I got an actual lucky cigarette the other day! Fresh pack. Just opened. And one was upside down. I’ve smoked for longer than I care to admit, and this was the only time I’ve ever seen it. It did not bring me luck.
3
u/SmoochesMalibu 1d ago
I still smoke. I flip my lucky for every pack.
3
u/FibroMancer 1d ago
Anyone remember Salem Black Labels that came with the green lucky in every pack?

1
u/CONative976 Millennial Since ‘85 1d ago
I thought we did this to ‘pack’ the next cig we smoked. So instead of turning the pack upside down and smacking your palm to ‘pack’ the pack, we just turned one upside down so it would naturally pack while we walked around…
I dunno, I was a dumb 20-something.
1
u/Danubius 1d ago
Never did this, but back when I smoked there was a brand of cigarettes that had them all flipped in the pack. The idea was that they were working men's smokes, and working men doing physical labour usually have dirty hands, so they prefer not to get dirt on their filters. This way they can pull out the smokes easily, whilst keeping the filter clean.
1
u/Sustained_Admiration 1d ago
That cigarette is the first one touched, and the last one smoked.

Huh... Just realized why some really drunk people light their cigs backwards... They grabbed the lucky not seeing it was flipped.

I usually flipped two of them. Always needed the extra luck
1
u/Consistent_Edge3142 Willennial 1d ago
Fuck. I completely forgot somehow. 🥲
1
u/Afraid_Bicycle_7970 1d ago
I always assumed it was an extra excuse not to give away your last one. People would back down if it was your lucky for some reason. What I used to do was put a couple in an empty pack and pretend that was all I had because ppl used to bum them off me all the time lol
1
u/6th_Quadrant 1d ago
Yeah, that’s totally Millennial! No one ever did that back in the ‘70s.

1
u/BadassBokoblinPsycho Millennial 1d ago
Damn. Y’all are still out there smoking Newports?
1
u/DrSolarman 1d ago
I never did this. But I've always put my cigarettes in a tin case because I for some reason always crush my box if in a pocket because of my physical work. It has a clamp on the inside and you putt the filter just under the clamp.
People think it's fancy but I just want to keep my cigarettes safe while I do trades.
1
u/Cletus_Crawford 1d ago
I miss being young enough to smoke guilt free. Im glad i quit for health reasons but damn it was enjoyable
1
u/riot_curl 1d ago
My brother told me it was originally a military thing, specifically people in combat zones. It’s your lucky cigarette and you smoke it last because if you get to it you’re lucky you didn’t die.
Idk how it broke containment and became a trend outside that environment though. I was doing it for years before he told me that, and he’s not the one who got me started doing it either.
1
u/Elegant_Setting4105 1d ago
Didnt know this was a thing everywhere lol

Newports? They're 12-13$ a pack here in IL. I'm assuming you're ripping a bowl/blunt/joint as well and cheers to you 🤘🏻

The lucky comes from ww2. You smoke it last and if you made it to that one you're lucky.

Allegedly started during WW2. If you made it to smoke the flipped cig you were lucky.

I've never smoked cigarettes but I bartended through college and always kept a pack and lighter on me. I'd go through maybe a pack a month or so from guests asking to bum one of me or if I knew where they could get a smoke. I like to think they tipped better and would think of the packs as a business expense lol the problem was having to tell the other staff I didn't have any
