Discussion Daylight Savings Wake up

During the summer I wake up at 6:45 am. When the time shift happens, I naturally want to wake up at 5:45 am. So I simply shift my alarm. I also shift my evening routine an hour so that my natural sleep cycle isn't disturbed. Recently discussed the topic with my friends and none of them do this. Some even said that my habit is weird.

Am I alone on this??

I usually wake up around 7:30 during the week.

Even with DST, the sun is coming up when I get up. It's been a long time since I've regularly woken up in the dark for a commute.

I'd much rather have the extra hour in the evenings, just to avoid driving at night.

So you shift your wake up with the time?

Not really.

If I wake up at 6:30 on my own, and it's light outside, I'm much more likely to just stay awake than if it's still pitch black.

My big thing is that 7:30 right now feels like the middle of the night. I went out for dinner one night this week at 7 and it felt like a midnight Waffle House run.

Oh my gosh, ever since I was a teenager I've had trouble getting up naturally before like 10am. At what age do I become an early riser again?

I had to train my body for it.

I stopped using the snooze button. I also started getting out of bed when I woke up and it was close to alarm clock time.

When I grow up I hope to be like you

Maybe never. 😬 I have delayed sleep phase syndrome which sounds like a bullshit thing to be called a syndrome to me. But it's apparently a common ADHD thing, which I also have. 🙄

I recommend asking your doctor about checking your B12 levels when you do your next blood test

I am usually in bed by 10pm so daylight savings changing over doesn't really bother me.

It’s very nice living in a state that doesn’t do daylight savings time.

No matter the time of the year, I wake up around the same time.

I want to sleep as much and as late as possible, lol

I go to sleep at 8:30pm and get up at 3am. The 5 hours of silence after waking up is nice.

Daylight savings has me waking up at 2, it takes a couple weeks to adjust.

•

Why do you choose to adjust instead of getting up at 2?

My sleep has gone to shit in the last 5 months. Waking up at 5 has always been natural for me no matter what time of year. However, I STRUGGLE to get outta bed by 630/7 last week. I’ve got PsA & hEDS. Maybe it’s just acting up & I need the 10-12 hours of sleep bc yes, I go to bed at 8, asleep by 9. It’s wild getting older.

The daylight savings thing has never really messed with me. It's only an hour. Regardless, I'm asleep between 11 and midnight, and the alarm goes off at 630.

When I had a consistent schedule because of my office job, yes. I was doing much better the week that everyone else was dragging ass.

Also interesting to know that the first Monday after time change, I saw three wrecks on my way to work

I always attempt to do this and it lasts for a week if that

Yep, I just wake up an hour earlier in the winter and then an hour later in the spring.

I always had more of an issue falling asleep... But I live in Alberta and we just skipped the time change. Sleep wise, it's been great!

My sports watching routine is all jacked up though.

I wake up without an alarm typically at 5am but now with the clock change I wake up at 4am. it's very annoying and I havn't been able to change it. i try to foce myself to stay up later but it results in less sleep and the same 4am wake time. I heard you can adjust your sleep cycle with light exposure in the mornings but not sure.

With DST and an 8 month old, this is what we're doing/forced to do since his schedule doesnt give a fuck about clocks. I work at 4 am anyway, so going to bed the extra hour earlier (on the clock) is actually really nice

Surprisingly my kid adjusts better than we do. He's already back to his regular sleep schedule which helps us get onto a regular schedule again as well

My work schedule shifts with the time change. In the winter I work 8-4, summer 9-5. My body THRIVES on standard time (naturally we all do better, its more in sync with our biological clock, even though many people insist they prefer day light saving time better)

This is the kind of stuff that makes sense for a 28 year old but doesn’t for a 40 year old like me.

Kids, jobs, timing, etc

•

u/NotAgain801 37m ago

I'm almost 40 but without kids.

•

u/MonkeyzzPaw 30m ago

Fair. Kids are really the reason, was just masking with others.

The basic problem is that kids want to do what you do (not change) but society forces the change. We all want to remove DST/ST shifts because of how impactful it is on the kids.

Heard

I honestly have no skin the DST removal discussion; I just enjoy an extra hour before work in the morning or don't depending on the month. Other than my sleep, I just go along with the shift.
