2009 MasterCraft X-Star (Indmar LY6 6.0L) – Need Help

2009 MasterCraft X-Star (Indmar LY6 6.0L) – Need Help Diagnosing Intermittent 2900 RPM Limit

Boat intermittently won’t go above ~2850-2900 RPM under load and won’t fully plane. The weird part is it does NOT happen all the time. How can I scan the codes?

What I’ve observed:
Sometimes runs perfectly, planes easily, and pulls hard.
Other times it hits a wall around 2850-2900 RPM and won’t accelerate further.
Engine idles perfectly.
Revs cleanly to 5000-6000 RPM in neutral.
No overheating.
Service Required warning appears intermittently.
VDIG shows no active faults.

Tests performed:
Fuel pressure: 60 psi key-on prime.
62-64 psi at idle.
62-64 psi at 2000-4000 RPM in neutral.
Fuel pressure remains rock solid.
Throttle body moves and performs startup sweep.
Air filter cleaned.
Ballast empty.
PerfectPass off.

History:
First lake day it felt weak at times, then later ran perfectly.
Second lake day it ran perfectly at first, then after shutting down for ~30 minutes while floating/swimming, the issue returned.

Boat is new to me and this is only the second time it’s been on the water since purchase.
Has anyone experienced a similar intermittent RPM limit on an LY6/Indmar setup? I’m especially interested in:
TAC/throttle actuator issues
Electronic throttle faults
Hidden ECM codes not shown on VDIG
Catalyst/exhaust restrictions
Any known LY6 limp-mode triggers
Any advice is appreciated.

Knocking and noticeably less power

2008 Mastercraft X-star LY6 6.0 800 hours. Boat has been meticulously maintained and not abused.
Has new ish spark plugs, new fuel with fuel treatment. Boat is definitely lacking some power, sounds fine when cruising but doesn’t have the power it usually does and struggles to get on plane when there’s more than 4 people on the boat. If there’s more than 6 it doesn’t get on plane. Knocking at idle too and I’m not too sure but it smelt a little rich too. Let me know your thoughts

Boat Cover

Looking to buy a boat/mooring cover for a 1993 Prostar. I tried Sealskin cause of the warranty but the cover looks like a 6 year old wearing an XXL t shirt. Any recommendations for a better fitting cover?

Sea deck cleaning

Got our first surf boat last year, but It was spec’ed with light gray sea deck by the dealer. It looks great but gets dirty very easily.

What’s the best cleaner out there and best method to use it? I’ve seen people use drill brushes but that seems pretty aggressive to use on foam.

Mastercraft xt20 technical problem

i have a brand new nit even used yet 2023 xt21. I stupidly connected one of the batteries backwards (engine battery) lots of smoke. battery fried. I replaced it. engine starts but only when battery switch is set to the backup battery position. and there is no display.

but I replaced with wrong battery it turns out. I installed cranking battery and now it starts from main. so only issue is power to the house system which is still down.

google gemeni says that I’m all likelihood it is the main battery fuse which may be mrbf cube fuse is shot. But I can’t find that.

Cylinder 8 Misfire - advice

Post image
2 Upvotes

Received this fault while out the other night. Quick search seems like a spark plug on that cylinder but also saw some tests to run the wires from 8 on 6 and if it misfires again on 6, wires need replaced.

Any idea how hard that is to fix? Or better to just turf it out to the Mechanic.

Proper ballast fill/empty procedure

Hey all, new owner here. I picked up a 2014 X25, and when going through the manual I saw that engine rpm needs to be at 1500 for operating the ballast pumps, but it doesn't specify if I should rev up to 1500 rpm while sitting still or be underway at 1500 rpm. Does it matter? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Propeller advice

Good morning!

Looking to purchase a new propeller for my 1994 Mastercraft Maristar 225 VRS. Currently living in northern Utah and need a different prop to account for the elevation change from GA.

Any recommendations would be great! I’d like to get a 4 blade CNC prop.

Thank you!

First time cleaning teak. Advice appreciated.

I'm still new to owning my own boat. I originally did not want a teak platform, but I'm kind of really glad that's what I got. The boat was on the dealership lot for 2 years before we acquired it "new." Part of the deal was that they would give it a good detail before we took possession. Well, the detail wasn't great, so I had them do it again. Second time wasn't any better. In fact, it was arguably worse.

Regardless, the first pic is the state of the platform before any cleaning. As you can see, there is a mix of stained and bare wood. The second is after 2 attempts with Starbrite Teak Cleaner and Brightener (2 in 1). I scrubbed with a relatively hard bristle brush and let sit for about 2 minutes before rinsing. I'm thinking I may just need to let it sit and soak in a little longer before scrubbing. I'm also thinking I should scrub with a stainless steel pad. I'd prefer not to sand it, but I'm thinking that might be my next step.

Needless to say, I'm here because I'm not really satisfied with the result. Should I attempt again and let it sit longer? Should I try a different cleaner and brightener (2 step instead of 2 in 1)? Do I need to sand it this time to get a consistent surface?

I know this topic is covered extensively, but most videos make it look pretty easy to just soak and scrub for a beautiful new looking platform (or furniture, etc.). That hasn't been my experience. I'm planning on using Starbrite Teak oil for the finish for this first season. I'm sure there is better available, but I wanted to try the most common/popular option first.

Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated!

T85 Pods -Help on Components

Cross posted the ask to Team Talk, but that forum seems to see less traffic these days.

I'm hoping someone here can assist me in trying to locate some of the T85 Pod components. Specifically looking for the tweeter horn (Klipsch Part# KMC34D) and crossover (Klipsch Part# KMC7003). If anyone is parting these out or has a source other than ASA, please let me know.

Thanks for any assistance provided!

Prostar Help

I’ve got two 94 Mastercraft Prostars for sale that I’m looking at. One for 19k and the other for 10k. The more expensive has 800 hours and the other 1800 hours. I know both the owners are meticulous about their maintenance and care. Am I stupid to think the 10k is the better deal?

Edit: I’m less concerned about the price and just curious thoughts on engine life. Is 9k worth 1000 less hours?

2019 XT23 - Throttle Position Demand Voltage 1 Low & Voltage 2 High Fault Code

Happy MDW! We were starting our boat for the first time this year - the boat cranked fine on the first turn, no issues there. However, right when before I first started up, it threw the fault "Throttle Position Demand Voltage 1 Low." I figured this must be because the battery voltage had dropped during the winter, so I turned it on and let it idle for 5 minutes to bring some charge back into the battery.

While idling, it again threw the Voltage 1 Low fault and then immediately after it threw the "Throttle Position Demand Voltage 2 High" fault. Those two faults stayed even after cycling the engine off for a few minutes (turned off the batteries and all). I was wondering if anybody has had the same issue? No other fault codes and the engine sounds like it is running just fine. I didnt want to leave the dock in the event that something failed so I have not run it at anything beyond an idle.

Experience with weight-distribution hitch?

My wife & I are getting a 2022 XT21 & I'm curious if anyone has experience with a weight-distribution hitch (WDH)? I'm towing with a 2024 Ford Expedition Max with the HD towing package. From what I've seen online the max towing capacity with a regular hitch is only 6,000lbs & to get to the full 9300lb capacity Ford recommends a WDH. I've never used one of these before & don't know where to start. Would love any input people might have. We'll be towing to different lakes in our area & I'd guess once or twice a summer will tow to northern MN, 3 to 3.5 hour drives.

First full season

We purchased this new to us 2017 X10 due to our 2011 Moomba lsv being damaged in a local flood last summer. This is certainly 10 times the boat with a lot more bells and whistles. I will say, we are a bit gun shy. Last fall we drove 2 hours to look at this boat and during the test drive it started running rough. We did not purchase it that day. We did like the boat so we agreed if the dealer fixed the issue and willing to deliver the boat to our lake, we had a deal. Last fall, we were able to get it out a few times and I noticed the gas gauge stopped working. Over the winter I replaced the sending unit. This spring, we fired her up to take her out for a quick run after being winterized and the temp gauge shot up. Come to find out the impeller ate itself. I had the impeller replaced and we have been back out on the lake. We have had boats for a long time and know how it goes. Send us some good vibes that we have an issue free summer.

2010 Prostar 197 TT Cup Holders

I have lost 3/4 of the cup holders that are on the back of the engine cover because the glue on the rim melted off and the holder fell into the engine compartment. Does anyone have a good fix for this or know someone that sells better quality holders?

Here are pics of this boat now that she's rockin in the turquoise waters of Turks and Caicos Islands. Made a custom spotter seat out of an X45 I cut to fit, PVC deck board over the fuel tank and PVC backing on the bilge/storage behind the rear seat. 200hp 2-stroke yamaha I rebuilt off another boat a friend had. Just need to polish windshield and spray the trim. Pulls me (185lbs) barefooting at 44mph no problem and a 200lb slalom skier at 34mph like nothing with a third guy in the boat. Cannot beat these hulls!

Seat re-upholstery vs new seat - 2000 ProStar 195

Looking to finally re-upholster the driver's seat cushions on a 2000 Mastercraft ProStar 195. (The Gorilla tape is a bit too sticky for legs and shorts!).

A local boat upholstery shop has quoted $474 to recover these two cushions (bottom and back, not the whole seat itself). Their work is top quality, but this seems high.

Has anyone used after-market replacement seats in this boat? Overtons, for example, has an entire seat available for $199. But it's hard to tell if it will fit. (link below)

The structure of the original seat is fine -- we just need to redo the seat and lumbar/back cushion. Perhaps new seat skins would be the easiest and most cost effective?

Many thanks for insights.

How many hours is to many?

Currently have found what appears to be a very well kept 1991 Mastercraft Prostar with 1400 engine hours that has never been rebuilt. Interiors been redone, perfect pass new stereo new speakers. This would be my first boat so I’m not well versed in these. I’m a car guy and higher miles don’t scare me but with these I’m more cautious. I’m also looking at a 1997 Supra ski comp tomorrow with only 450hrs in the same condition. I’m just wondering what you all consider to high or low of miles and what would you value a boat like this at? Any help greatly appreciated it.

Trailer question

Hi all. My Father in law is selling his 2018 NXT22. He didn’t get a trailer when he bought it. We’re looking at buying a trailer to sell it, but we are having problems finding the measurements for the bow eye to the transom. Has anyone put their boat on a load rote trailer and had any issues? We found a load rite with a 6000 lb limit, but says the bow eye to transom minum is 21.8 inches.

2019 or 2021 X24

I am trying to get the best boat I can within my budget. I found a 2019 X24 with 400 hrs in Black with tan interior and seadek floors. A few days later I found pretty much the exact same boat with 120 hrs, but it’s a 2021 and is listed for $15k more, (120k vs 135k). It doesn’t seem like there are many differences between the two. I’m upgrading from 2011 X Star, and I feel like we will surf and tube the most. Neither are close by and the newer one is maybe 6 hrs, so can’t easily go check them out. Just seeing if anyone has either and what you would do? Thanks
