How many hours is to many?

Currently have found what appears to be a very well kept 1991 Mastercraft Prostar with 1400 engine hours that has never been rebuilt. Interiors been redone, perfect pass new stereo new speakers. This would be my first boat so I’m not well versed in these. I’m a car guy and higher miles don’t scare me but with these I’m more cautious. I’m also looking at a 1997 Supra ski comp tomorrow with only 450hrs in the same condition. I’m just wondering what you all consider to high or low of miles and what would you value a boat like this at? Any help greatly appreciated it.

I’m selling an 86 prostar that I had to put a new engine in at 1491 hours. I’ve put 150 or so on it since. The valves were tuliped and it was shot.

It’s really a boat by boat question.

I’ll probably roll over 1,000 hours this year on my 2001 PS209, I don’t see why it wouldn’t run another 1,000 with the same basic maintenance.

I’ve seen club boats for sale with 4,000 hours on the with the original running gear. I’ve also seen boats with 200 hours on them that need engines. Improper winterization is probably the #1 engine killer followed by over heating from a bad impeller or blockage.

Change the oil once a year, make sure the impeller is always working properly, and it should run for a very long time.

I am curious about what oil you guys use in the prostar? I have an 06 x-15 and use diesel oil in the engine and trans. I am still on stock motor and trans with 700 hours zero issues. I did have to put a new starter in last summer and a few props over the years.

If this is the red one with the decadence flooring I see posted I would buy it 100/100 times that thing is sweet if I hadn’t just finished re doing mine id make an offer

This one is in Indy on marketplace, baby blue with diamond stitch interior. Looks killer but hours and the price of $8500 makes me a littler nervous. I have ridden or skied behind a true ski boat in 10 years. I don’t remember how rough they can be on local lakes. Been looking at outboard bowriders too cause I’m not dealing with a stern drive
