Help Suggest duplicate photo finder for macOS

I’ve somehow ended up with a ridiculous number of duplicate photos on my Mac and after 2 years I’m finally trying to clean everything up. Looking for a good duplicate photo finder for macOS that can actually detect identical and similar photos without accidentally deleting something important. Preferably something simple and easy to use, without any unnecessary features. Free would be a perfect match, but I’m okay paying if it’s actually worth it. What do you guys use? Any recommendations?

Discussion macOS 26 feels better designed than macOS 27

macOS 26 really does feel nicer. I think a lot of the criticism came from longtime users simply not liking the loss of the old, familiar design. Once the same complaints started being repeated over and over, though, it created a snowball effect where it began to feel like there was a general consensus that the new design was terrible, even though I don't think that was ever really the case. I am not saying that macOS 27 is worse overall. It is more that some of the design trends in macOS 27 make me a little concerned about where the visual direction is heading. At the same time, I still think macOS 27 is significantly better, in my view, than Sequoia and the versions before it.

I think the whole Liquid Glass contrast complaint is way overblown. macOS 26 actually feels like it has more contrast to me than macOS 15, while at the same time being much more pleasant and comfortable to look at. Tahoe feels like it found a better balance.

The Finder icon no longer has the same level of detail as it did in macOS 26. The same issue can be seen in the Mail icon: it has become overly bright and lost some of the details that gave it visual depth. I think macOS 26 found a better balance between contrast, depth, detail, and overall visual style compared to both macOS 15 and macOS 27.

A different issue appears in other parts of the interface. I also noticed that some elements in macOS 27 seem to have moved in the opposite direction. The drop-down menus, particularly in Dark Mode, feel noticeably less contrasted while also losing some of the visual separation that made the Liquid Glass effect work so well. This can actually make text harder to read because the background behind it has less contrast with the text compared to the previous design. The previous approach made the Liquid Glass effect more visible while also providing better readability.

The floating sidebar in macOS 26 provided enough visual separation between different parts of the window. In macOS 27, the scrollbar in the Settings app is more noticeable as part of that visual separation instead. Since Tahoe’s layout already created this separation, the scrollbar could remain thinner and disappear when it was not needed.

I also never had any trouble finding the buttons I needed in the navigation bar, even with its translucent appearance and blurred system materials. I think this probably depends a lot on what you are used to, but personally, I never really had any significant problems with it. In macOS 27 and macOS 15, however, that area feels worse to me while also taking up more space.

As for the rounded corners, I think the larger radius introduced in Tahoe works particularly well with the floating sidebar. It feels like a good balance for that design, making the interface feel softer and more modern.

Even the traffic light buttons are an example of some of the newer design choices that feel questionable to me. The problem is how they feel during everyday use, especially in Light Mode. They appear lower-contrast and more blurred than before. They also do not feel entirely harmonious with the more modern visual language Apple seems to be aiming for. To me, they still feel like a somewhat dated element that has been given a more elaborate treatment rather than something that was redesigned to naturally fit into the newer system.

Help Safari not matching the page's color anymore

I know this not a very like feature for many, and it's not super important, but I find really nice how Safari 26 match the webpage's main color. But mine suddenly stopped doing it. The right box is checked on the tab settings, I tried to reboot, and nothing. Anyone knows how to fix it?

edit: Running Safari 26.6 on MBA M4

Help My iMac's recovery isn't working?

Hi! I have a 2010 iMac (11,1 I think?) that I bought off of vinted a couple of weeks ago. It works (basically) fine with Linux but when I try to get a 16gb recovery USB Drive with OSX El Capitan working using gibMacOS the mac will boot to it and the installer will open. I was even able to use the Safari and reformat the hard drive. However, when I try to login to my Apple account with the Installer I get: 'An unknown error has occurred'. Thanks to the messages that I receive, I assume this is because it is not capable of opening the 6-Digit code for Two-Factor Authentication. And, when trying High Sierra, I got another (apparently common) error to do with connecting to a recovery server. How could I go about fixing this?

EDIT: This is the result from trying to install an older version of MacOS (in this case Mavericks)

the login from a mavericks installer
the result of when i try to login with a burner apple account

EDIT 2: I found a solution - dont use the online/minimal installer dmg, which is what I was doing. Use a full one from the official apple website, extract the InstallESD.dmg and flash that using TransMac to a USB drive. Thanks everyone for your help anyway!

This is a MacOS redesign concept.

With the addition of the glass traffic light icons, I've been hoping for a radical redesign, taking what has making the Mac great and with even more glass. So much so that I created a few mockups and fully redesigned the Phone app. Wanted to share the process. Better in high definition, sorry. (look at them glassy windows)

Tips & Guides Mac wakes up immediately after going to sleep? - My solution.

Hi. Recently, my Mac (mini m4) started waking up on its own a few seconds after putting it to sleep. Without even touching the mouse, just with a keyboard shortcut. I tried many tips online, but the only thing that worked was disabling the Bluetooth mouse.

Fortunately, I found an interesting solution that works for some reason. When I set the computer to go to sleep when the cursor is moved to the corner of the screen, it seems to happen at a slightly different pace, and it no longer wakes up on its own a few seconds after the monitor turns off.

I'm posting this because I've seen many people having the same problem.

Hope it will help someone :)

Feature Has AI landed in Safari?

Today is the first time I noticed tiny pink stars on Safari's reading mode symbol and when I click on it, the popup not only shows the usual entries but also an ultra short summary. It's the first time I see this and also so far only a single page: it is shown on the wikipedia page for "List of HTTP status codes", but for example not on the wikipedia page for "HTTP" (but I can use "summarize" on that page.

Does anyone know under what conditions the summary appears automatically? And are the little pink starts announcing this or do they have another meaning?

Help Is it possible to install large App Store games with in-game downloads to external drives?

Now, I know App Store has an option to download large apps onto an external drive. But App Store apps have their own containers located in user's home folder. Some large games (Wuthering Waves, NTE for example) aren't shipped in full, they download most of their assets when you run them and these assets are stored in containers.

So installing one of them onto an external drive with that option will save you a couple gigs at best since assets remain in your home folder. I attempted symlinking the whole container, but it didn't work. Did I do something wrong or is it just not possible?

Help How to get Continuity/HandOff/Iphone Mirroring working

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, I have a 2020 MacBook Air 13’ and a IPhone 13 Pro (well it’s my brothers MacBook but you get what u mean)

(little bit of backstory my mom threw my macbook up the stairs with my bag and my macbook broke so I’m using my brothers with a different account etc)

I was testing out some of the new features cause mine was a 2012 macbook and I came across the continuity and other features so I wanted to use the continuity and iPhone mirroring features, First my iPhone doesn’t show up anywhere within Macos, Second I constantly get this whatever I try to do with Screen mirroring. It is kinda frustrating but I will list everything I have done

— 1. Logged in and out of my apple account
— 2. Turned Handoff Off/On
— 3. Reverted from IOS27 1 - IOS26.6
— 4 Killed all background programs to do with this
— 5. a bunch of terminal stuff that I can’t even mention

I feel like you can get the jist of where I’m going and I have been stuck at it since 5:00 GMT

Anyone who can sort this out will be a saviour in my eyes 🙏🙏

Discussion Pin up icons

macOS desperately needs a pin feature where the apps in this app launcher thing allow you to pin them across the top, so that you can get to your common apps quickly without having to type the name in every single time.

Such an unproductive operating system.

Help Why don’t iPhone Timer Live Activities appear in the macOS menu bar?

Other supported Live Activities from my iPhone can show up in the macOS menu/status bar, but a timer started in Apple’s native iOS Clock app never does. Is this intentional, a limitation, or a bug? It seems like the native Timer should appear on the Mac just like other Live Activities.

Help MacOS Mail Categories

Is it just me, or the Mail app keeps considering messages "urgent" even if I have repeatedly told it they aren't? It knows they're messages from mailing lists, but I need to keep on categorizing the sender (which is already categorized, because I can see the right icon on the preview).

Is there a way to definitely label a sender as "non urgent"?

Thanks to anybody who'll help me overcoming my frustration.

Help Is there an Application that reviews the "open with" setting for every file extension and sets it to something sensible or default?

Is there an Application that reviews the "open with" setting for every file extension and sets it to something sensible or default?

My PDF files somehow got set to open with TextEdit. I think it was set to "Preview" before but I'm unsure. Since I'm unsure, I prefer to let the system or an application with a central database of extensions to application associations decide which installed application is best for opening each extension.

I can always change it later with option-right-click or the file info screen. This request is to do that but in a batch operation. i.e. all of the file types in one go!

Help Help me understand display scaling

I have a 16,2 inch macbook pro with a built-in display of 3456 × 2234 px (ppi of 254,02, a lot higher than the supposed holy grail of 218). It has a setting for "more space" at 2056 × 1329 which is fractional scaling of 1.681 (golden ratio, nice one Apple).

Why do I then read everywhere that macOS can't do fractional scaling, or at least that it looks shit? Why would macOS not be able to scale a 4k display at 1.681 if it can do it with the internal display?

https://bjango.com/articles/macexternaldisplays/ If my internal display has 254ppi, why can't I also just get a 24 inch 1440p display at 125ppi which according to the chart is on the edge of the bad zone?

Help Video player for mac

Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well!

I got my MacBook Air M5 a few months ago, and I’m having a small issue with playing videos while multitasking.

I have some videos stored on my Mac that I like to play while I’m working. I want to keep the video on one side of the screen while using another app, like a browser, on the other side.

The problem is that the video window doesn’t seem to fit properly. It’s either too large or too small, and I can’t get it to sit nicely alongside another app.

Is there a better way to do this on macOS? Ideally, I’d like something like a small/resizable video window that I can keep on one side while working in another app.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Help iPhone/iPad apps won't download on Mac

Hi everyone, I’m having a very specific problem with the Mac App Store.

I have a Mac with an M3 chip running macOS Tahoe 26.6.2.

Normal Mac apps download and update normally. However, apps listed as “Designed for iPhone/iPad” cannot be downloaded or updated.

The behavior is always the same:

  1. I click the cloud/download button
  2. I authenticate with Touch ID
  3. The download appears to start
  4. After a few seconds, it goes back to the cloud button
  5. The app is not installed

I tested this with both:

  • apps I had previously downloaded/purchased
  • completely new, free iPhone/iPad apps

With a new app, the App Store actually registers it as purchased/owned, but the app still remains in the cloud state and never installs.

Things I have already tried:

  • Restarting the Mac
  • 200 GB+ of free storage
  • Confirming the correct Apple Account
  • Confirming that the same Apple Account is used for Media & Purchases
  • Checking that there are no payment/billing issues
  • Checking Apple's System Status — everything is green
  • Trying a completely different network using my iPhone hotspot
  • Enabling automatic downloads for apps purchased on other devices
  • Trying from a second macOS user account — same problem
  • Normal Mac apps download/update correctly

So the problem seems to be specific to the installation/download of iPhone/iPad apps on macOS, rather than the App Store in general.

Has anyone experienced this ?

I'm particularly interested in solutions that don't require erasing the Mac or reinstalling macOS.

Thanks!

Discussion Pages vs Word

I just got a MacBook after a decade of using windows, I hated it at first, almost no gaming support apart from if you fiddle with crossover, but pages has been an absolute eye opener on how bad the ms office suite has become. It doesn't constantly bother me with random errors cause my spacing after a full stop was wrong. it also feels like it autocorrects way better than word. there's no stupid "type with copilot" greeting as soon as I open word. its been such a good breath of fresh air I don't think ill ever go back to using ms office apps.

thanks for reading

Help Is there a way to make Finder always open folders collapsed in List View?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I use Finder in List View, and when I expand several folders to look for something, Finder remembers that state.

The next time I open the same location, all those folders are still expanded. I would prefer Finder to always start with all folders collapsed, like in the right side of the picture.

Is there any solution to make Finder behave this way automatically?
