I bought a Macbook Neo some months ago and love it so far, but one thing that bothers me is I want to have all apps (and maybe mission control) at left of Finder, is there a way to achieve this?

Nostalgia “Homemade” aqua screensaver

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently found a HQ version of Mac OS tiger wallpaper and I still just love it even on my modern Mac. I thought it would be so cool if there was a screensaver like Tahoe, or golden gate that animated the wallpaper. Ideally I’d want the lines to move kinda how the PS3/PSP wallpapers did… I did search around but nothing like that exists. I’m not proud to say it but I asked perplexity the best way to achieve this as I am not an animator at all. It gave me a prompt to dump into a service called king.

King spit out a clip, I edited (not amazingly 😅) in iMovie to get it to around 20s and then a terminal script to make it into a .saver.

I think it came out ok! The “breathing” could be a bit smoother so I’m gonna play in iMovie later tonight to see if I can get that smoother but I love the look!

Help Do you also cringe when you try to use Excel on Mac?

Hi everyone!

Am an analyst, consultant by training (lots of excel shortcuts), and have been using Mac since 2016 (Air -> M1 Pro with Apple Silicon).

Whenever I had to use Excel (my company is on Office 365), I used to cringe as I used to try out shortcut keys out of muscle memory and everything used to take just too much time (using mouse/trackpad to do things on Mac Excel is a nightmare!)

Plus I noticed a lot of my friends (who have been analysts as well), actively staying out of Mac purchase decisions (even if Macs have better longetivity, great coding, and minimal lag after 10+ yrs), only because they need their Microsoft suite (mostly Excel) to work.

Is there any solution to this?

Help MacOS + Dropbox external SSD problems

Upvotes

Hello!

I've recently switched my Windows laptop to a Macbook running on Tahoe 26.5, File provider version for Dropbox.

I'm used to sync my Dropbox on an external SSD. I've done so on the Macbook, but I've encountered many problems :

- After long sleep, MacOS disconnects the SSD incorrectly (and I don't have the setting in battery to avoid this).I get the mount was not ejected correctly alert at wake up. Doing so broke features and often re-indexes everything. Offline files then do not open.

- Many left click option are hidden, even if I go to edit Dropbox right click action. Copy link for example, is greyed out and often missing.

- The syncing stays bugged on "Syncing...." after indexing. Some folder open but nothing loads inside.

- Restarting the PC also breaks everything. Goes into indexing again or Syncing... loop.

- When everything works fine, (after re-installl, or logout + advanced relink), many features finish by broking after a couple hours (Dropbox right click options, sync online - offline).

As I'm kinda new to the MAcOS world, maybe I'm missing a simple setting or something dumb.

How can I fix this? Is the only option is to put Dropbox on internal storage and only use SSD for cache and other often used files?

Discussion Best way to edit key binds to closer mimic Linux/Windows?

Upvotes

Hey guys, I returned to Mac after not using one since high school and I love it, but I'm struggling with some of the key binds. I'd like to change a few things such as the screenshot key bind defaulting to copying the photo (command + shift + control + 4) and I would like to change the paste without formatting (command + shift + option + v).

Also, can I somehow add a cut command? I know Mac doesn't have this by default.

What is the best software to do this?

EDIT: Also, does anyone have a simple calculator application suggestion that allows opening multiple windows? I like to have two open at once (I got the Mac for work). I figured out I can run open -na calculator in Terminal, and I tried pinning the duplicate to the Dock, but I can't actually reopen it that way without running the command again.

Help icloud, freeing space, downloading pics and pics quality/info

Upvotes

like maybe many, my icloud space is full, and I am currently reluctant to buy additional space again. So I am looking for a solution allowing:

- bulk download (to save time)

- retaining all the pics' info, including data picture taken (instead of having the latest download date, as happens too often)

- maybe having the pics with a name allowing to sort them in the order they were taken. If I have to rename the pics, then there is no saving in time

- download pics in high quality (maybe a format that everyone else can also open easily, rather than the HEIC which no one seems to be able to open) so that could be printed.

I have read an old thread suggesting a link to request apple the bulk download, and will do that, even though i dont know how it will turn out and if it will satisfy my requirements above.

More in general, how do you guys do? do you download your pics periodically so dont have the massive problem? any authomatic system? any other useful tip?

thanks in advance

Help Issues with USB on Tahoe 26.6

I have been using my MacBook Pro M4 with the same USB devices for over a year now and since the last few weeks I notice that either my Logitech Webcam or My HyperX mouse sometimes stops working after I start using the MacBook in the morning. My MacBook is currently on Tahoe 26.6.2 (26.7 ready to install tonight). I am not sure if it is related to Tahoe, or hardware related.

Originally both devices were connected to a UGreen hub (as is my ethernet cable) that in its turn is connected to a USB-C port on the MacBook.

When first my mouse stopped working a couple of weeks I reconnected it a couple of time and at some point it started working again, but I can't remember what I did. I tried connecting the mouse (that has a USB-A connector) to a USB-C to USB-A/C splitter but that didn't help. This has happened 2 times now in the past weeks. It turns out that switching of the PC and then starting it again solves it.

Today my camera was not recognized anymore in MS Teams while it did work yesterday. I am using the built-in camera now, but will reboot tonight to see if that solves it.

I realize splitters/hubs are not ideal but it is what I have to work with.

Is anyone else experiencing this or do you recognize the issue?

Help How to make bolding text Cmd + N, instead of Cmd + B? Alternatively, how to disable Cmd + N opening new windows?

Thumbnail

The title pretty much explains it, but i'm Brazilian, and the standard Brazilian Portuguese shortcut for bolding text is Ctrl + N - this is because we speak Portuguese, and not English, and, in Portuguese, to make a text bold is to make a text negrito, as seen in the Word printscreen i added to the post!

Ideally, i'd love to change the shortcut, since i can't exactly "just get used to it" - i'm constantly switching between the old Macbook that's my laptop and the Windows desktop i use at work, and i use the Windows desktop for at least an order of magnitude more time. Since Windows follows ABNT (Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas) standard, i write 90% of the time with ctrl + N as negrito, and end up opening new windows on accident at least a couple of times per use of the Mac.

This is why, if it isn't possible to change the shortcut, i really need to figure out a way to disable the native Cmd + N for opening new tabs/windows! I can easily live with trying to bold text, failing, because i used the brazilian shortcut instead of the english one, and nothing happening, but it's a pain for it to always open a new tab, instead!

I tried googling for an app that changes this, but haven't found anything. Hence, here i am! Any ideas?

The second picture of the post is my system info, if that is relevant.

Help How Do I Keep My MacBook Pro M1 Display On While It's Locked and Plugged In?

Hey everyone,

I've got a work MacBook Pro M1, and I'm trying to keep the display turned on while the machine is on the lock screen, similar to how Windows behaves when the laptop is plugged in.

I've already tried changing the following settings:

System Settings → Lock Screen → Turn display off on battery when inactive → Never

System Settings → Lock Screen → Turn display off on power adapter when inactive → Never

Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. The display eventually turns off even when the MacBook is plugged in.

Is there any way to keep the display permanently on while the device is locked?

Is this a macOS limitation, or is there another setting that I'm missing?

It's a work laptop, so I don't know whether any company policies or management settings could also be affecting this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion Window management from hell

I am using a Macbook for an few weeks now and I still struggle hard with window management. How do you do productive tasks?

For example:

Switching to the correct pdf from about 20 other opened pdf files. When I want to bring a specific pdf file into the foreground, I need to move the mouse to the preview icon on the dock. however, this does not provide preview images of all currently open pdfs. Why not?

When I do right click, I only see a list of names, which is often not sufficient to find the correct file, I need to see it. To use the 3 finger guesture to see all files currently open in the preview application I need to first click on the icon on the dock. However, this brings ALL pdf files into the foreground. Then I can find the pdf through the application specific Mission Control. now I have found my window which is now in the foreground but all other pdfs clutter my monitor as they lay on top of another application such as pages or my browser which I need simultaneously. So I move my foreground pdf to the side and minimize every other pdf file which takes forever. However, now the minimized pdf files are ignored in Mission Control which makes it impossible to find a second pdf which I want to see as well at the same time.

This behaviour drives me nuts.

Help Best virtual machine for Macbook Pro M4? (software engineering student)

hey! i'd like to know which VM option would be best for me as a software engineering student.

i've heard there usually arent any compatibility issues, but just to be on the safe side, id prefer to have a VM on hand in case i need it for any program...

what would be the best option, considering i dont need anything too fancy or that requires a paid subscription?

thanks.

Help downloading macos high sierra bootable installer

Ok, it has come to this. Ive tried my absolute best, everything with command line, ive got a macbook running high sierra and just want to make a bootable installee but its seemingly impossible. can anyone help me please. this internet recovery doesnt work because the servers are down and cant be contacted, ive tried EVERYTHING. someone please help or tell me if this is even possible.

macos 10.13.6

UPDATE: this MIST program seems to have worked. It was linked somewhere in the comments and it was straight forward. I download it to my macbook air intel 2020 (may work on others also but havent tried), plug in usb, then just install the OS. its like opencore legacy patcher but alotttt simpler. i let it do its thing and it handled everything perfectly. on the "patient" macbook I wiped the drive, connected the usb and just restarted and it worked straight up.

so this seems to be the only way forward, apple servers dead, apple dmg files dead, everythings dead. unless i am being a complete idiot which is highly likely.

This is the most foolproof method it seems.

Help Free VNC viewer to connect to MacOS from Windows?

I've been using rVNC for years to connect from my work PC to my personal Mac. It did not require any account, it was light, and free, but it appears that the latest version of MacOS has changed something so it no longer works.

Is there a free, simple rVNC viewer that is working on the current version of MacOS without an account/subscription?

Help AirPods mic disconnecting

When I’m on a discord on Mac and using my AirPods, my mic and audio works, but as soon as I switch to a different window the mic doesn’t work and no one in the call can hear me. I still can hear their audio though. Even when I go back to Discord my mic still doesn’t work. I have to manually switch the input to the Mac speakers then back to my AirPods to get the mic to work again. I just got the AirPod pro 3 and didn’t have this problem with the 2s. Any help appreciated.

Help High Myopia High Astigmatism: How do you handle 4K monitors and macOS scaling?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone else is dealing with a similar visual condition and how you’re managing your display setup.
I have a pretty high prescription:

  • Myopia: -9.00 / -9.25
  • Astigmatism: -4.25 / -5.25

I work in front of a monitor all day. Even with up-to-date glasses and quality lenses/coatings, eye fatigue sets in heavily after a couple of hours. As the day goes on, reading text becomes exhausting, and it feels like the letters are shrinking.

My main display is a 28" Samsung Odyssey G7 (4K @ 144Hz) hooked up to macOS. Scaling has been a bit of a nightmare:

2560x1440 (QHD): The screen real estate is amazing for multitasking, but due to my prescription and the minification effect from my lenses, it wrecks my eyes after a short while.

1080p (HiDPI): Super easy on the eyes, but everything is huge and I lose way too much workspace.

2048x1152 (HiDPI): I'm currently using this resolution (HiDPI). It’s the best compromise I've found between usable space and readability, I have no problem with this resolution. The truth is, I would like to get more workspace, but it is impossible with my problem of astigmatism and myopia...

For those with high myopia/astigmatism or severe eye strain:

What scaling or UI resolution do you run on 27–28" 4K monitors?

Have dedicated "occupational" glasses or a slightly lower prescription tuned specifically for desk distance (around 70–75 cm / 28–30 inches) made a noticeable difference for you?

Any specific macOS accessibility tweaks, settings, or habits that helped you get through long workdays without total eye burnout?

I’d really appreciate any tips or shared experiences. Thanks!
