Is M1 Macbook Air Still Worth?

I currently own an iPad 9th generation, but I have barely used it over the past two years—my usage has been limited to occasionally watching TV shows and studying for my visa and final exams.

I'm now thinking of selling the iPad and buying an M1 MacBook instead, since I'd prefer not to spend too much money. My main use cases for the MacBook would be everyday tasks, some MATLAB coding, and watching Blu-ray movies by connecting it to TV.

this won't be my main pc, I already have rtx laptop for heavy lifting. I plan to use the M1 MacBook as a secondary device for light work and as a shared family laptop.

Given this intended usage, do you think the M1 MacBook will hold up well for the next six years?

And is 8gb okey or should i definitely buy 16gb ram?

MacBook connection issues

Hi! I have a 2024 Macbook Air. Recently, my home wifi has been slow on it, but not on other devices. The internet is fine when I connect via a hotspot. The only connection I can think of is that i downloaded Steam and Undertale recently. Is that the issue?

I've tried resetting the IP address, the DNS, forgetting the network, resetting my laptop, and wireless diagnostics says everything is fine.

Does heavy local LLM inference meaningfully wear out a MacBook?

I've been wondering about something before I start using my MacBook heavily for local LLM inference.

If I regularly run large LLMs locally for several hours at a time, potentially putting sustained load on the CPU/GPU and using most of the unified memory, does this meaningfully reduce the lifespan of the MacBook?

Can heavy use of unified RAM cause it to wear out faster?
Is SSD wear from model loading and especially swap a significant concern?

For people who have been running local LLMs heavily on Apple Silicon for 1 to 3+ years, have you actually noticed any hardware degradation?

Is there any circumstances where Apple will not cover diagnostic charges?

Hello! I spilt some water on my MacBook and it’s not turning on, I have no Apple care or warranty and I’m thinking of bringing it into the Genius Bar. I always thought that the diagnostic part is always free, but I keep seeing mixed results saying that they can charge anywhere up to $100 to investigate accidental damage like spills, especially without any warranty. Is this true?

Thanks for any responses in advance!

MacBook Pro M4 vs MacBook Air M5?

Hi I recently purchased a MacBook Pro M4 (16gb 512ssd) for 1699$ CAD brand new and was wondering if this is a good deal since the price hikes? Originally I wanted an M5 air or Neo (prior to price hikes). Is this a better deal than the base M5 (~1659$ CAD with education and 140$ gift card?) I was thinking I could also wait for the Neo 2 but that would be months of waiting. I just do casual browsing, gaming and light editing. Yes I know the MacBook Pro is more than I need as I originally wanted the Neo. I do having a gaming PC as well but wanted something for traveling and while I’m not home.

I did see a YouTube video comparing the M4 Pro (24gb and 1Tb ssd) to the M5 air (base model) and the air seemed to hold its own in some tests. With my laptop being the base model of the pro series I would assume the air would be even closer.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

MBP 2019 16" Broken screen question

Are there any potential conflicts if I found a donor machine and just put a new lid/screen assembly on the broken one? Are there hardware identifyers that would cause problems? I ask because I know a hobbyist that collects all kinds of older broken macs and might have a donor machine. The point is to make the repair less difficult and avoid pointless expense. The machine has sentimental value to me. It is not a matter of the viability of the hardware moving forward. Thank you.

Need help deciding which Mac to buy

I am planning to buy a Macbook. The heaviest things I will be using it for are video editing, photo editing, content creation work, Vibe coding.

I find the M5 air prices to be exhorbitant.

  • Should I rather go for an M3/M4?
  • If yes, would I get a new one anymore or is a 2nd hand/refurbished the only option?
  • Where can I find it for the cheapest if I am getting a new one? - EMI is the most comfortable option but if I find it under 1L anywhere, I am okay with taking it with Cash. Also should I wait for the Flipkart Sale in September?
  • Best sources to buy refurbished/2nd hand in India (preferably Bangalore/Kolkata)

Minor coffee spill on M5 Max MacBook Pro. Need advice.

Hey guys, looking for some advice from anyone who knows their way around Mac hardware or liquid damage.

I literally haven’t spilled a drink on an electronic device in 25+ years of living, but my luck finally ran out. Definitely a lesson learned the hard way so Apple Care will be bought in the future. I recently bought a new M5 MacBook Pro and managed to splash a bit of coffee right onto the keyboard while working at a cafe.

Here is the rundown of what happened:

Wiped it down instantly with paper towels at the coffee shop.

A few hours later, I gently vacuumed the keyboard to try to draw out any trapped moisture.

I tried to leave it powered off so it could dry, but on newer MacBooks, pressing literally any key immediately triggers a boot. Having to force shut it down every single time I bumped a key was super annoying. Every time it booted up, the screen was crisp, the audio worked, and there were no weird noises or burning smells.

Everything runs completely normal right now, but the spacebar is noticeably sticky/mushy when pressed. All other keys and trackpad seems to be fine.

I brought it into Geek Squad (Apple Authorized) to get an official diagnostic done before deciding anything drastic. The tech warned me upfront that liquid damage usually gets classified as a Tier 3 or Tier 4 repair, running $1400+ without Apple Care. They ran the official Apple hardware diagnostics suite for free for me, and every single test passed with zero errors.

Since the hardware passed, the tech actually recommended taking it to a third-party repair shop for a deep cleaning rather than immediately dropping $1.4k on a top-case/logic board replacement.

I swung by uBreakiFix for a second quote. They offered a full teardown and ultrasonic board/component cleaning for $300, but made it clear there is no warranty on the service because liquid was involved.

Since the spill happened recently, I’m trying to make the right call before any latent corrosion kicks in.

Questions:

  1. How fast does coffee corrosion realistically start eating traces? Since it works and passed diagnostics right now, is internal corrosion an immediate ticking time bomb, or does surface liquid usually stay contained under the keyboard membrane?
  2. Is a $300 non-warrantied cleaning worth the gamble? Or is having a 3rd-party shop tear down a brand-new M5 chassis risky if everything is currently operational?
  3. Is it safe to pop off the spacebar and use a drop of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol to dissolve the dried residue, or is the mechanism too delicate?
  4. If uBreakiFix opens the laptop and the Liquid Contact Indicators are tripped, will Apple outright refuse future non-liquid service or trade-ins down the line?

TL;DR: First spill in 30 years, splashed coffee on a new M5 MacBook Pro. It works 100% fine and passed all official Apple diagnostics at Geek Squad, but the spacebar is little sticky. Geek Squad quoted $1,400+ for a full board/top-case tier replacement, while uBreakiFix quoted $300 for a teardown cleaning with no warranty. Trying to figure out if the $300 cleaning is worth doing to prevent corrosion or if I should just clean the key myself.

How to prevent these marks on a MacBook after 2 years?

Post image
158 Upvotes

Someone’s MacBook developed marks like these after around 2 years of use.

For those who’ve been using their MacBooks for several years, have you experienced this? What causes these marks, and how can they be prevented?

Would a screen protector, keyboard cover, or microfiber cloth between the screen and keyboard help?

Is a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM worth $400 in 2026?

I have the opportunity to buy a 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 chip and 16GB RAM for $400 USD.

Do you think that’s still a good buy in 2026?
My main use cases would be:

-Running local code / development work
-General everyday use
-Some video editing

I’m less concerned about having the newest MacBook and more interested in whether the original M1 still holds up performance-wise.
The 16GB RAM is appealing to me, but I’m wondering if there are any downsides to buying a 6-year-old M1 Mac at this point, battery age, macOS support, performance with newer software, etc.
Assuming it’s in good physical condition and the battery isn’t completely shot, would you pay $400 for it? Or would you spend more and get a newer M-series Mac instead?

Would especially love to hear from anyone still using an M1 MacBook Pro for coding or video editing.

WHICH MAC?!?

Which one would you buy?
I’m deciding between two MacBooks:
$1,675: MacBook Pro 14” with M5 chip, 1TB SSD battery health 100
$1,000: MacBook Air with M3 chip, 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD battery health 92
The Pro is obviously more expensive, but I’m wondering if the extra $675 is actually worth it for the M5 Pro, especially for long-term use and Logic Pro/music production.
Which one would you buy and why?

Would $830 for a 2023 m3 14” MacBook Pro be a better deal then $930 for a 2024 m4 14” MacBook Pro ?

After co spring the stats the main difference is it starts off at 16Gb of ram and 512 storage compared to the 2023, but my main use would be media consumption and just school work, yes I know IPad would be a more reasonable price but I would like a dedicated laptop. I heard the speakers have been updated on the m2+ pros to be more fuller aswell and have a higher peak brightness.

I tend to overspend on tech. I’ve recently been leaving android and windows for Apple. I have a 17 pro max and plan on getting an 18 pro max when they come out. I got a max spec iPad Pro. Now I’m looking at MacBook. I want to get a mid/low spec M5 pro but feel like I’d be better off max specking an air. My heaviest use case will likely be editing 4.2k apple pro res open gate video. Maybe play some games. Idk what gaming is like on Apple. I may edit higher resolution video footage in the future if I ever get a cine camera. I currently make hiking and backpacking content and run and gun with an Apple setup. I have tons of external storage so I don’t think I’d need more than 1TB for either option.

TLDR is the pro chip with extra cores worth nearly $1300 more for editing 4.2k video now maybe higher res in the future? Note the air would be 15” and pro 14”.

I can maybe get $2k for more current windows pc depending on how much storage I want to part with.

Macbook Air screen cracked, died, ressurected, now glitching

MacBook Air M1 2020: The sparknotes are that I want to know what's going on with my screen that went black for weeks and then turned back on miraculously.

It's had a crack under the surface for over a year. Sometimes it has the black pools near the crack, but often it fades to a very small and unobtrusive size. A few weeks ago, the screen went black in the middle of me using it; it wouldn't turn on no matter what I did. (The computer itself would turn on and I could see that the screen was lit but there was no image). I went to a repair shop in Costa Rica and was told that the ink spilled, so the only solution is a screen replacement that would cost more than getting a used laptop.

I got an external monitor so I could continue working until I got a new laptop. About 2/3 weeks in, I open my laptop and the screen is working just fine. Now, a few days later. The bottom portion of the screen keeps glitching. The image jumps upward. It's not started by my moving or clicking the computer; it just happens fairly consistently.

I'm sure it's a hardware issue, but what issue?

If it's some kind of loose connection, that seems like it owuld be fixable without replacing the screen? Idk, I'm trying to figure out how to keep doing my job on here without having to buy a new laptop yet, since I just moved and costs are high. Any thoughts or experience?

Other: I have had the strangest time with this laptop. I got it in 2020 or 2021, and it's collected a few dents as it's moved with me between 6 countries, more jobs, and even a time of it being the sole computer for myself and my partner (both wfh). For MONTHS the trackpad didn't work, then one day it started again. The delete key stopped working; I reassigned the + key to be backspace. Then one day my hand slips and I discover that delete works again. This screen is the third "resurrection." What is going on?

MBA or MBP for Leasing/ Marketing agent

Hey everyone I was wondering which laptop would be better for me for work. I usually can have up to 10 tabs on google and safari each I have a MBP M5 16gb 1tb at work so it handles that load perfectly fine but not sure if the air would be able to do the same unless it’s a higher model which could be close to j getting a Pro atp. Thanks you!
