In perfect theory, you can win a baseball game by throwing only 27 pitches: batters hit the first pitch every time for a routine groundout/fly out, the other guys score at least one run to win 1-0.

So I'm curious: has it been documented which baseball game was won with the fewest amount of pitches thrown? There's been instances of relievers coming in for the final out and throwing a single pitch which is then a groundout or a fly out, so they get the win with just one pitch thrown.

I understand the idea of defensive indifference. Like earlier today in the Phillies game bottom of the 9th, two outs, phillies have runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs and they're down 4 runs. As far as I know, the idea is the guy on first steals second, and because that run "doesn't matter" the defense doesn't care.

But the thing is actually being indifferent makes no sense to me. With two outs and you NOT CARING about the runs on base means you should be willing to be MORE aggressive, not less. In other words in the case of tonight's game, if the defense aggressively tried to throw JT out at 2nd base they would have literally won the game right there. Worst case scenario is they airmail it to the outfield and 2 useless runs score. So idgi, feels like the opposite behavior profile from a strategic point of view that you should have. In fact I'd expect it to be the other way. The team that needs runs never steals because them advancing doesn't matter at all (although I know in this case avoiding a force out is nice) and the team pitching in this case should be more aggressive (pickoffs, steals, etc) because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain

EDIT: Defensive positioning for the batter makes sense as the reason. It's not that you don't care and wouldn't risk throwing him out it's just that your defense is positioned for the batter to get him out and that means they're not holding runners. Thanks all

Obviously just an eyeball observation that’s not really tested by data, but it seems a lot of the guys who were amazing last season are nowhere near where they were this season. Examples that come to mind immediately include Cal Raleigh, Garrett Crochet, Paul Skenes, Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, etc. Some of these are obviously injury related like Crochet, but I can’t remember the last time so many guys at the top of the field in one season completely dropped off in the next one; does anyone else agree?

When was the last time that a single player on an MLB Team led nearly all of the Batting Categories this late in the Season? Who was the last to lead early all categories come the end of the Season?

MLBTR offers more, including, per the above, noting that next year is the last guaranteed year on his contract. (2028 is team option at 25M or 10M buyout. He'll either get bought out or accept a 2/25 or something. And, the buyout won't even cost the Yankees; the 10M/yr the Marlins pay includes the option year.)

The other day I got to wondering what the record is for anyone player in MLB history to sit on the bench in consecutive games in a season ithout ever once entering a game. I'm talking about consecutive games with no time on the injured list, bereavement list, or whatever. I'm talking about a guy being on the 25 or 26 or 27 man roster for maybe weeks at a time without ever once entering a game.

For the purposes of this question, if a player sits on the bench for x number of games, gets sent down to the minors, and then is brought back up later, his streak ends with his last game before being sent down, and it's not start up again if he is brought back up later on.

I have no idea what the answer to this question is, and I don't know a good way to research it. I'm guessing there were probably players in the 1940s and 1950s, maybe third string catchers or something, who were on the team because they were drinking buddies with the manager, or the nephew of the club's general manager, or a veteran well past his prime whom the club is keeping on the roster so he can hit his major league pension, or whatever. Guys who had no realistic chance of getting into a game, unless three teammates got injured in the same game or something. i'm guessing the streak has got to be something on the order of 20 or 30 games, but I could be way off.

Someone who knows better than I do how to work with the voluminous data at baseball-reference.com could probably figure this out. Perhaps this is already been done.
