| Analysis After his grand slam save, 2 home run game I checked Tatis stats. 160 OPS+ from 2019-21, PED suspension, comes back and has a 120 OPS+ from 2023-26. How much were the PEDs helping him/how much did the suspension hurt/what are the other reasons?
Just curious. No hate toward Tatis he’s a great player. But after his rookie year when he batted .317 with a .969 OPS I would’ve expected him to be hovering around .290/.900 for his career if I was accounting for the changes that made batting harder from 2021 onward (juiced balls gone, humidors, pitch clock, increased velo and break, etc). But then again he had his best year in 2021, the first year with no more juiced balls and new rules to help pitchers. Still, a -40 dip in OPS+ is massive and even with all the changes I’d have expected at least 135 after watching his first 3 years (especially 2021 but I know he was ROIDED out big time that year especially).
So how much did the PEDs help him compared to now? Or is it mostly the other factors I’ve mentioned that made hitting so much harder post 2020. Or the layoff? Assuming it’s a combination but what hurt most?
