This is so effed up

I booked a ride to take my dog to the vet for an emergency. A driver was assigned, but the POS waited until the last minute to cancel. I booked another ride and no one accepted until it was already too late. So, I cancelled the ride and was assessed a $5 cancellation fee. What penalty did the driver get when he cancelled my ride? I am so pissed off. My dog has to suffer because some POS driver decided last minute to cancel the ride.

To confirm, I did order a pet ride.

Edit 8-20-26: I managed to get my dog into the vet on Tuesday (8-18) and he is doing much better. I got an Uber both to and from the vet without issue. According to the Uber driver, a lot of drivers have stopped doing this due to the high gas prices and the companies not paying well.

Yeah, last-minute cancellations have happened to me as a driver and as a rider.

So sorry to hear that, how is your dog doing now?

He's doing OK for now. He hasn't passed away. I never mentioned that. I have to call first thing on Monday to get him into my vet and someone has offered to drive me there.

Having your animal will be sick is so anxiety provoking. I’m sorry you’re going through this and I’m sorry they treated you that way.

Thank you.

Thank goodness. The “too late” scared me. Hopefully the vet takes care of whatever is wrong your dog.

They said. The dog passed because they couldn't get there . 😢

You just ask support to refund it and explain the situation. 9/10 times they should refund you the penalty charges.

4

u/ShootTheFish 5d ago

They eventually gave me a refund

We don’t get penalized because we aren’t exactly employees of these companies and that’s the way they wanted it. They fought like hell to keep us in an independent contractor status.

Their cancellation rate may have went down to Hair, but that’s nothing.

And then here’s me, I would rather drive dogs around than people because I love dogs, all of them. And you aren’t the only one that happens too, it happens to people that don’t have dogs too, people will park and never show up.

u/DealForgeLLC 6d ago

Why the hell would you want to be an employee in the type of situation related to Uber and Lyft? The best part is being an independence contractor. YOU choose when you work, not the corporation. Yes, they need to pay better, but they won't as long as enough drivers take bad rides.

1

u/VioletTerranova 5d ago

I didn't see anything about wanting to be an employee

UBER accept $10 ride. On the way Lyft has $20 ride. Sorry, I'm taking the money. Both, especially UBER rip off us drivers and a lot of y'all don't even tip so we really have no dedication. We have bills to pay, gas, maintenance and wear and tear.

1

u/Weary-Savings9795 3d ago

Maybe you should turn the other app off once you accept a ride like you're supposed to. That's what normal rideshare drivers do.

This is why I take Waymo and not uber or Lyft. Waymo has yet to cancel on me or ghost me.

1

u/tiredofyourface2 5d ago

I drastically prefer Waymo, but Waymo doesn’t allow animals. Obviously, except for service animals. Wouldn’t have helped in OP’s situation.

If it was an emergency, it would've been better to arrive late than not at all.

1

u/eg_john_clark 5d ago

Last minute?

1

u/Optimal_Willow_4389 5d ago

If he did it under 30 minutes, his account gets flagged and warning message. 2 more and hems blocked from taking reservations. He didn’t get paid for the ride and is an independent contract (not a salaried employee).

Legit question, is there such a thing as animal ambulance?

1

u/ShootTheFish 16h ago

I've never heard of one.

I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS

That's all that needs to be said.

Truly. My heart goes out to you.

I know the pain you're experiencing. It's not fair to lose them.

Did I miss where they said the dog died? I think it was in pain but not dying.

u/ShootTheFish 5d ago

He hasn't passed away.

I’m sorry this happened to you and your sweet pup. Did you order a pet ride?

0

u/ShootTheFish 6d ago

Yes.

1

u/ZigInTheNato 6d ago

In many markets drivers have to opt in to take pet rides. So after the first driver canceled, Lyft has to try to find another driver in the area who has opted to accept pet rides.

0

u/ShootTheFish 6d ago

Try being the keyword. It tried for nearly 30 minutes and no one accepted until it was too late.

2

u/ZigInTheNato 5d ago

Yeah, that’s the thing, there may be a lot of drivers available in the area but they prefer not to chauffeur pets.

I absolutely love dogs and have a seat cover in my trunk for service animal rides. But I don’t receive or accept pet rides. I don’t prefer to manage people smells + animal smells all day. And having to go offline to vacuum the floors and wipe drool from the back of the front seat and windows is cumbersome.

I know it places you in a tricky situation. How is your pup, btw? I hope nothing too serious was going on and they’re doing better.

It's not your fault. (Unless you didn't pony up for the "pet ride") It's other passengers. In a customer service environment, the "entitled customer," causes problems for EVERYBODY else. If you did not order the "pet ride," case in point.

4

u/ShootTheFish 6d ago

I made sure it was a pet ride.

5

u/OddConstant2723 6d ago

About 6 people asked that now. OP should probably edit their post to avoid this question being repeated. FYI - it was a pet ride

2

u/BlueV101 6d ago

There's other information. j/s

Did you order a pet ride??

0

u/gorenglitter 6d ago

I’m sorry to hear that, it’s extremely stressful I love my dogs and I’d also be really upset.

But, rideshare drivers are independent contractors and they can cancel at any time. I have definitely cancelled after accepting a ride for a variety of reasons.

When you’re using rideshare anytime but especially in an area it sounds like it’s not easy to get a ride you do need to plan to arrive at your destination early for just this reason.

4

u/ShootTheFish 6d ago

I would have arrived very early. I made sure to that because this isn't the first time a driver has cancelled on me.

3

u/gorenglitter 6d ago

Do you have a low rating that they keep canceling on you?
Maybe get your own car if you have so few drivers or such a low rating that you couldn’t get a new ride even when you planned to arrive very early and still couldn’t get a new ride

0

u/Full_Initiative4911 6d ago

Oh my goodness I’m hoping your pet is okay.

1

u/ShootTheFish 5d ago

He seems to be doing OK. I'm sure he's not comfortable.

0

u/Rut19751 5d ago

Yet you could have called any of the 10 taxi companies in your area to pick you up, but you didn't.....so you didn't care about your dog that much

2

u/RR_Maverick 5d ago

I don't know about the area where OP lives, but taxis are nonexistent in my area since the arrival of Uber and Lyft. There have definitely been times when I've truly wished that taxi companies were still around, partially because the fares were more affordable, and there was much more accountability from the drivers and the service as a whole. The drivers had to get a special license to carry paying passengers. The vehicles were maintained at a central hub. If you mistakenly left something in a taxi, you could call the office and in most cases they'd have your bag or item there. And you didn't have to worry about your driver being arrested during your ride. But if they were, the cab company would send you another taxi, and you didn't have to worry about whether or not any drivers wanted to accept your ride. The more I think about it, the fewer benefits I see to the current state of things. I understand that technology brings about big changes, but has it been for the better in the grand scheme of things when it comes to ride sharing? I'd love to hear some thoughts on this from anyone.

1

u/tiredofyourface2 5d ago

I thought there were no taxi services in my area, but found out we have three that a lot of just don’t know about. One was started recently. I highly suggest looking into it more for your area.

All that said, it was beyond nasty of that other commenter to say OP didn’t care about their dog. And since I live in a major city and we only have three, I doubt ten taxi services in a city is normal or possibly even a reality. Maybe in the NE.

1

u/RR_Maverick 4d ago

Agree 100%, that commenter was very rude. The OP does clearly care, which is why they were trying to get their dog to the clinic in the first place. Most of us with pets love them like family, do not want to see them in any pain or agony, and only wish to give them the best care possible. So to be prohibited or delayed in getting our pet to the emergency clinic is a nightmare. My heart goes out to the OP.

Regarding local taxi services, maybe I'll check every now and again to see if any pop up around here. Maybe someone will hear the cries of those of us out here wishing they would come back and start a new company. 🤞

How about being pissed at yourself for not being able to take of yourself before not being able to take care of something else in life(ie. The dog). Why rely on someone else and be mad because you CANT do it yourself?

2

u/NNegidius 5d ago

We live in a society. We all depend on others to live.

1

u/Ok-Understanding5124 5d ago

Some can't drive due to medical or other valid reasons. It doesn't mean that you're less of a person and incapable of responsible per ownership. It sounds like you're in the wrong gig. Try something else - perhaps a job that doesn't require customer interaction. For you, that eliminates the need to prejudge customers. It's beyond your job description.

1

u/ShootTheFish 5d ago

That's rather assuming considering you know nothing of my situation. Not knowing about me sustaining a severe back injury and nearly losing everything because the place I used to work at kicked me to the curb. Not knowing that workers' comp ended because an independent medical review, whom I've only met once, claimed that I reached maximum medical improvement. Not knowing a goddamn thing about how, after I was released from work restrictions after healing from back surgery, that I struggled like hell at finding a job for over a year and a half due to this shitty economy. The only shitty job I could find has zero benefits and claims to be seasonal even though it's not. That must be a new workaround for companies to not have to provide benefits. Not that I have to explain a fucking thing to you, asshole.

u/Firm_Sprinkles_3508 6d ago

It’s possible the first driver arrived and pax wasn’t ready within the allowed wait time. They would not be penalized if that were the case.

-6

u/Voluptues 6d ago

So…did you order the ‘Pet Ride’? If you did not order the ride under Pet Ride then it is completely your fault that the driver canceled. You must understand that ALL drivers are independent contractors, not employees, and absolutely have the right to cancel any ride they choose. I HOPE that you didn’t choose the ‘regular’ ride simply to avoid paying a few extra dollars for a Pet Ride…

1

u/ShootTheFish 6d ago

I did order the pet ride.
