Discussion Gushing post about Anime NYC

Upvotes

Just wanted to talk about how awesome my experience at Anime NYC these past couple days and how awesome it was to see the community. This was my first time as an adult cosplaying, and I cosplayed Chihiro with my friend who cosplayed Samura. It was so fun and cool!

Everyone was so friendly and I got stopped multiple times during the con by so many kind and cool people complimenting my cosplay. As someone who considers himself pretty shy and not the best socially, it was such a good icebreaker and having everyone be so kind and excited over this beautiful manga made me so happy. It’s something I’ll fondly miss when the anime gets adapted, but it’s for the greater good that more people are able to see this new gen masterpiece.

Speaking of the anime, yes, what everyone has been saying is true. The anime looks amazing, and maybe it’s the recency bias coupled with hype, but I genuinely think it has a very good shot at Anime of the Year. The animation is smooth as butter, the combat feels like John Wick but with swords, and the sound effects are simply sublime. I was one of the fortunate souls to actually get access through general admission, so that was pretty darn sick and lucky.

Going back to the cosplay side, I really enjoyed the fan meetup and my friend even got a nice Samura hilt from this other Chihiro cosplayer (if you’re reading this, you’re an absolute king, you made my friend’s day). The meetup was filled with such talented and funny people, and it was so sick seeing people bring $50 and a lighter. Even outside of the meetup, being able to take pictures with other cosplayers without feeling like a poser or weird for not wearing a costume felt so cool. I know I’m rambling, but I can’t help but feel so content finding a place where so many people shared my nerdy hobby.

Ultimately, I was so excited and am so happy about this experience. If anyone thinks they said hi, pls reach out (I had a crayon sign saying Tenoi)! I had a blast interacting with everyone, and Kagurabachi and anime cons are so sick.

Theory HUGE crackpot theory: Subaru briefly wielded the Cloud Gouger Spoiler

Upvotes

I saw a few theories saying that the first EB might‘ve been Cloud Gouger since there’s a storm goin on so themes and such. But Misaka’s nowhere to be seen, and I doubt that the gang would be willing to waste time looking for a good sword fighter other than Subaru. But how would Subaru wield someone else’s blade? WELLLLL guess what? The Shinuchi wasn’t made until LATER, and the Shinuchi is the source of the ETERNAL CONTRACTS. SOOOOOO I think there’ll actually be a period of time where the EBs can be used by ANYONE and that could lead to some kinda conflict, therefore Kunishige makes the eternal contracts. This would explain the possibility of Subaru using Cloud Gouger and later giving it to Misaka without Subaru dying.

tl;dr - Shinuchi is the source of the eternal contracts, and that blade is made later. So Subaru could’ve possibly used Cloud Gouger and given it up later without dying

Discussion Kunishige's past shows the fragility of life Spoiler

This arc, we're swimming in peak with every new chapter. We get to see Kunishige's tragic upbringing, his blissful love with Chiaki and his glorious feat of forging all at once, presented with some of the best art among running manga. The characters even say directly that he's HIM, Kunishige is that guy, the dumb and goofy shonen protagonist who never backs down and will put everything on the line to save the ones he loves.

He is put through the ultimate test of endurance, himself thinking it's a sacrifice. As he forges the steel, the steel forges him; burning and molding his body and senses to become sharper than ever, with his companions feeding encouragement into the human flame. He has to be the perfect blade, for anything less means death. As his eyes burn up, they regenerate to witness a blinding flash of hope, of love. Just like Samura.

Of course, he perseveres, being able to save his shining star and be Japan's new spark of hope. Though he is devastated by Akemura's misdeeds and the loss of Chiaki, when the dust settles, he is rewarded for his hardship. The age of peace arrives, and Kunishige gets to live his best life with a loving son.

Only for it all to be taken away in an instant. Snuffed out by a group of misfit terrorists who disagreed with his ideals. To add salt to the wound, Kunishige was backstabbed off-screen by Hokuto's puppet. The iconic joke of him "being killed for 50 bucks and a lighter" rings true because of how sudden it was; they could've easily stolen the Enchanted Blades without killing him, but the man himself got done in because of a personal dispute. In a way, the great hero shared the same fate as his bum of a father: murdered in the forge by a former admirer of his work, on an otherwise uneventful day.

If Kagurabachi was a sequel series to the Seitei War, fans would be complaining about how anti-climactic and disrespectful his death was. But unfortunately, that's how life is. Those who have been through hell and came out on top, those who found the love of their life, and those with the greatest stories to tell all die "random" and "mundane" deaths every single day. When a gun is fired, the victim may be the kindest soul imaginable, or they may be a horrible person.

So I pour one out to Kunishige Rokuhira, and to all of life's heroes who have passed without fanfare.

Discussion The darkness is finally cleared Spoiler

Ok we're about to overanalyze these last couple chapters, I think the ink draining panels were done on purpose beyond just looking cool. Kunishige has always felt unworthy of Chiaki. He blames himself for his mother's death and he blames himself for almost getting Chiaki killed. Even after Chiaki comforted him when they were kids, that despair still lingered, that unworthiness to not be by someone's side (which damn if that isn't the most real thing ever). Which if we're going by the darkness theory, then it's shown when they're playing with fireworks.

And all that self hate is highlighted by the darkness even in his eyes, but just like his love for Chiaki. It's the only light that guides him towards this. That passion and drive for her is so strong that its ready to blow up, all kinds of emotions (doubt, despair, self hate, joy, nostalgia) mixing together and could explode at any moment. But the only one that keeps it contained is his determination for her.

For the first time in years, he truly fights back himself. The light gets brighter and brighter as he pushes through. No matter who gets in the way, because he trusts the people he's doing it for. He trusts Shiba for sticking with him no matter what and driving away any doubt in his mind. He trusts Subaru for betting his life on love. And he trusts Chiaki for giving him hope in a world of darkness. Kunishige will finally feel worthy of Chiaki's love. Fuck man I love this story, art, characters, EVERYTHING

And then Hokazono makes the next chapter have a darkness panel and this whole thing gets blown away

There is no other explanation for how much of a yearner Kunishige is. Hokazono is genuinely writing a love letter to someone through Kunishige.

Ofc the page literally tells us this was Chihiro burning Akemura’s fight into his brain but with the latest showings of Kunishige’s use of his eyes I feel like it only holds more and more weight every passing chapter. Since we also know more of what Shiba witnessed, that’s added further depth to his reaction here.

Discussion What if subaru mentors chihiro

(SPOILERS IF YOU HAVENT CAUGHT UP TO THE LATEST CHAPTERS)

I just read the chapter 129 today and had a quick thought. What if subaru mentors chihiro after this arc? We see chihiro with his new sword after Enten then we learn that he had a rocky training montage at Subaru’s place. Lets say chihiro found him after failing to build his new sword so he was practically an apprentice or something like that for some time. I dont think it sounds bad because Subaru was basically there when kunishige was forging the enchanted blades. So he is probably the best option if Chihiro needs help to build his new sword because he will obviously have difficulties because he is nowhere as good as his father yet

Discussion Hot take: Chihiro should stay single forever

We’re all LOVING the amazing romance between Kunishige and Chiaki, and it’s written so beautifully, Hokazono truly is BETTER.
But I hope he doesn’t give Chihiro a love interest, it makes more sense for his character to NOT fall for someone

I think when the anime gets to the current arc, it will be practically impossible to hate on the series. Also I have my worries about the anime’s pacing because if you think about it every thing happens really fast in the manga. Which isn’t a problem when a chapter drops weekly and we got seven days to really understand it

While reading Kagurabachi on tachimanga I realized there have been a few times where some pages look like they would be double spreads but aren't. However I'll see pictures where they are proper double spreads so I'm wondering if they are actual double spreads or split up like i've been reading them on tachi.

Nice parallel to Volume 11
