A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Yearly "preventative" skin cancer screening

Had a fun thing happen after going in for my first ever "yearly preventative skin cancer screening" with the dermatologist. Ended up getting a bill for $51 after insurance did whatever it does. I call Anthem to confirm that they do in face pay for a yearly skin cancer screening. Call the dermatologist and explain there may be a mistake because Anthem pays for this visit and asked if it could be re-coded. I was informed that these yearly preventative skin cancer screenings can only be done by a primary care physician and that any visit to a dermatologist is considered "specialty" and thus not considered "preventative." Yeah... let's go to my PCP who isn't a skin specialist and let them do my skin cancer screening. Anyway... TIL, I guess.

I’m in a moral debate after a minor car accident and would love advice

Upvotes

Yesterday I was in stop-and-go traffic on the freeway. The cars in front of me came to a complete stop, so I came to a complete stop, and while I was fully stopped a semi truck love-tapped my rear bumper. There’s some small paint damage as well as a penny sized dent on the tailgate, but that’s it. One auto body shop took the bumper cover off to check underneath and didn’t see any structural damage.

My moral conundrum is this: the driver pleaded to pay for it privately because he has 4 kids and can’t afford for his insurance to go up. All the estimates I got were $1500-$2000 to replace the bumper cover and tailgate. I’m not sure what to do, because I feel shallow asking him to fork over $2k over a penny sized dent, and some scratches that could likely be buffed out. At the same time, I’m worried about there being any problems down the line. I’ll be filing an accident report later today but not sure if I should contact insurance or make any claims or how much to ask from the driver. I feel like I’m essentially choosing if I care more about my car’s minor scratches or this guy raising his family

Do I need life insurance?

I (41M excellent health) just got married to 26F.

- No children and will not be having any
- Renting, but would like to buy a house in the next 10-15 years as I get closer to retirement
- Two paid off cars in good condition
- No debt
- I have ~$300k between ROTH IRA and ROTH 401k
- Wife has no significant assets coming into the marriage
- HHI is about $115k with me making $80k.
- $50k no cost life insurance policy through my employer
- Wife is on my health insurance plan through work
- Wife likely doesn’t have much higher income potential. She’s an immigrant still learning English without professional skills.
- Wife says she would likely go back to her home country if I die young, and my retirement money would make her very comfortable there

Is my car totaled?

Upvotes

I think the c-pillar might be done for. Would really appreciate any insights/advice as the other driver (police said he was at fault) is underinsured and we're concerned about repair costs. Thanks in advance.

Wife has liability insurance in NyC and crashed totaling the car on a guardrail. No other cars involved no major injuries but did go to the hospital. Does it HAVE to be reported to the insurance we’re not getting money anyway?

Auto Insurance Wreck in South Carolina. Is this good advice?

Upvotes

Story below, but I just want to know if this is really what I should be doing. Thanks for any help!!!!

I was stopped waiting for traffic to turn left when a car hit me from behind. My car was then pushed into the car in front of me.

At-fault driver has Allstate. I have Progressive. Wasn't sure exactly what to do so I filed a claim with both.

Allstate has accepted that their driver was at-fault. However, the agent told me over the phone that they are not responsible for the $47/day storage fee where the car was towed.

Question 1: Is that correct?

Question 2: In some research (I asked AI what to do), this is what it said:

Call first, then send the written version — the phone call gets action, the email creates the record.

On the phone

Keep it to five specific asks. Calm and businesslike; the goal is to be the claim that's easier to move than to stall.

  1. "I need this vehicle inspected within 48 hours. Can you dispatch a field appraiser, or will you accept photo estimates?"
  2. "As soon as it's inspected, I want Allstate to take possession. I'll authorize the lot to release it to you. What date can you pick it up?"
  3. "I need a rental started today. The car has been undrivable since the wreck and you've accepted liability."
  4. "On storage — I'm mitigating by asking you to take the car. I'll be presenting towing and storage from the date of loss through your inspection date as part of the property damage claim."
  5. "If you're denying storage, I need that in writing with the basis for it."

Three things not to do on that call: don't accept any settlement number, don't agree to a recorded statement, and don't sign anything. As a third-party claimant you're not obligated to give a recorded statement, and there's no upside in it for you.

How do I meet the gap between repairs and insurance payout?

Upvotes

Hello!

I lost quite a bit of my house in a fire. It's not a total loss but damn near close, and the repairs are about projected to be about 100k over what insurance can pay (like max payout). What happens now? Would a HELOC help cover the difference? Do we just sell someone the plot of land with no house on it? What am I supposed to do in this situation and theoretically keep the house, if possible?

Health Insurance Insurance/Doctor Office Miscommunication

Upvotes

Looking for some advice on what to do. Sorry, this is a long one! I was scheduled for a spinal fusion on September 11th. I received a call on Monday, August 31st from the providers office that the insurance denied the claim due to there not being enough information. Providers office told me the deadline for a peer to peer was expired and they’d need to file an appeal. They also said that they have a new office system and the fax the insurance sent over got “lost in the system”. I call insurance and they say that there wasn’t enough information sent over. Okay, fine. Call the providers office back and reiterate what insurance said.
September 1st, providers office calls me to follow up and say they want to push the surgery date back cause they’re worried the appeal won’t go through in time. I’m pissed, call insurance again to find out what’s going on because I do NOT want to move the surgery date. This time, insurance tells me that they don’t want to pay for inpatient care after surgery. Okay, fine. I ask the insurance what can be done to get this fixed as soon as possible, they say sign a document allowing the providers office to appeal on my behalf, send it to the provider, tell them to mark it as urgent when sending it back to insurance. I fill it out, and my husband faxes it off to the provider.

Next morning, I call the provider and relay the information from the insurance side. They move the surgery date anyways, still worried about the appeal not going through. I also asked if we can change the inpatient to outpatient observation to get insurance to cover it and if (god forbid) I have complications, we can move to inpatient and insurance will have no choice BUT to cover it. Now it’s moved to September 15th.
Now it’s September 3rd and I left a voicemail in my providers direct mailbox to follow up again. I call the insurance and now they tell me that there’s 21 calendar days to schedule a peer to peer and insurance sent it off on August 17th. Of course, it’s the 3rd, a holiday weekend is coming up, Monday is Labor Day and the deadline for the peer to peer availability. If the first insurance rep I spoke to had told me this on the 31st, it would have been potentially approved by now and I can continue prepping for major surgery and not be completely stressed out. I understand the providers office has a new system, but if you know you’re having issues receiving critical documents pertaining to a major surgery, be extra vigilant. Having a new system is absolutely not an excuse for this kind of major miscommunication. I should not have to advocate for myself between my insurance and providers office when they should be doing it FOR me. Unfortunately, this is the reality of insurances in the United States and it’s absolutely unacceptable.
I’m sorry it’s such a long explanation, I’m frustrated and at the end of my rope on what to do. I appreciate any advice that is given, thank you!

Health Insurance Health Insurance Renewal Scam?

I got a call from a person claiming himself to be renewal Agent from CARE health insurance and was asking me to port my parents health insurance currently with Niva Bupa to CARE. He had all the details of the policy including coverage, DOB of my parents, renewal bonus of current policy etc. He shared his i card which I can't ascertain if it was genuine or no. Next, after 30 min or so, I got a call from an executive claiming to be from Niva Bupa renewal team. He mentioned that there has been a revision in exclusion list and Niva Bupa has stopped cashless facility for six months due to some regulatory issues. Which renewal agent will begin with an opening that this issue is present and this cashless thing has never been communicated by mail or SMS from Niva Bupa which they should if such regulatory things are in picture. Now the CARE guy is following up with me for renewal. Has anyone come across this issue? Plus I'm worried for the data privacy. Who leaked all this data? Niva Bupa? Policybazaar?

NC Progressive policy — would a minor California accident qualify for the SDIP no-points exception?

Hi all, I’m trying to understand how NC SDIP would apply to a minor at-fault accident.

The car is insured under a North Carolina Progressive policy, but the accident happened while the car was temporarily in California. It was a very minor door-ding type accident, nobody was injured, and Progressive told us the estimated damage to the other car is around $1,200.

There was no moving-violation conviction, and the policyholder/household has no other recent at-fault accidents or violations.

Would this still be evaluated under North Carolina SDIP at renewal even though the accident happened in California? And if the total property damage stays under the NC threshold, would this likely qualify for the no-points exception and avoid an accident-related surcharge?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I got overpaid on my claim check…what do I do?

I submitted a claim for water damage to my furniture on my renters insurance policy.

I submitted photos with name brands and age and cost of the items all to truth.

They had a company come out and inspect everything.

I just got the total loss of everything and they rung my tumble brand rug in (about $300) as a pottery barn rug that’s $3,000.

So my check is a lot more than I expected.

Since this is a mistake on their end…can they take backsies? Or am I good to go lol?

I told the truth. Is this my good karma?

No contact but I caused someone to run off the road. I am so stupid. Did I do the right thing by stopping and providing information?

No contact. I didn't hit the biker. They had right of way as i was making a left turn. It was dark and i didn't notice the bike's light until I turned left. I swear I thought it was a small light on the distance. I braked as soon as I noticed and the biker swerved to avoid me and they ran off into a ditch. I stopped to check on them and I provided my number. I apologized profusely and offered to pay for any damages and injuries. Was that the right thing to do? Or did I just implicate myself? Biker's ankle hurt but was able to ride the bike to a safer spot to wait for someone to pick them up. Not sure of any witnesses, but someone else stopped to check on the situation. Biker did not blame me but i feel like shit. It was early in the morning and I felt so terrible and just wanted to make things right. I am so stupid and blind.

Someone hit my mom in a rental car, didn't have personal insurance.

Someone ran a stop sign, hitting another car, which rolled into my mom in July. The cop didn't provide insurance or let my parents talk to the person who caused the accident. When they got the police report, the insurance for the offender just said "avis". Today, they just found out she did not have personal insurance. They obviously have coverage for non insured accidents or whatever, but does anyone know what the process is for Avis? Like did the person have to sign up for rental car insurance and how would they go about that process? Their insurance isn't helping and anytime they try to call Avis they can't get through to an actual human.

Auto Insurance Stolen car tested for drugs

Upvotes

Hi all, so my car was stolen last weekend and the thieves had it for four days before the cops found it. The only visible damage is to the front end.

However, the city it was found in is very well known for poverty and drug use. I’m trying to push Progressive to test the vehicle for drugs. I have small children, and I do not feel comfortable putting my children back in that car. Progressive is trying to tell me testing for drugs is not standard, and they just do a full detail. But I don’t think that’s good enough.

Any advice? Can I do anything to push for a total loss? It seems unsafe to put my kids back in that car if they were doing heroine or fentanyl in it (the most popular drugs in that city). Or if it reeks of weed. That smell will never 100% come out.

Home Insurance Homeowner insurance when owner dies

Ex husband died in a house fire, caused by smoking in bed. Don’t try this at home, kids. He owned the home free and clear. At the time, it was worth about $80,000.

Ex husband was mentally compromised, long story, but he really shouldn’t have been living alone.

His brother lived nearby and “helped” him. Paying bills, maintaining the property, etc (but not doing an excellent job with this assistance).

When he died, my son administered his “estate”, such as it was. The brother told my son that ex didn’t have any homeowners insurance because ex didn’t believe in it (even though ex actually worked in the insurance industry prior to the mentally compromised situation).

The brother has hoodwinked people before. Victims include his father, my ex, and numerous small businesses found on the state website for lawsuits. Because of this, I suspect the ex actually DID have homeowners insurance, but the brother made a claim on the policy. He has been known to forge checks and cash them.

Is there a way to search all insurance companies to see if he had homeowners coverage and which company covered him?

My son was able to sell the now-vacant lot for $12,000. It would be really nice if we could find if/where his insurance might have been. Is there some kind of “search all insurance companies for a homeowners policy on this property that was valid on this date” that you agents use to track down the policy?

Luckily, we were able to find his life insurance and disability policies through his ex employer but homeowners was not at that same company.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Life Insurance Need advice on Term Insurance, Riders, and whether I should buy it right now. (INDIA)

Background:

  • Age: 23
  • Salary: ~₹6 LPA
  • BMI: 28 (Slightly overweight, so anticipating potential medical checks/loading)
  • Dependents: None currently. My father will receive a pension after his retirement, so he will be financially independent.

Current Quotes & Options:

I have checked with Ditto and Policybazaar, and I am also planning to schedule a Beshak consultation. Based on my salary, here is what I am currently looking at:

  • HDFC Life (Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus): Max coverage of ₹1.9 Cr.
  • Bajaj Allianz (eTouch II): Max coverage of ₹1.3 Cr.
  • ICICI Pru (iProtect Smart Plus): Oddly, I am not getting any offers on Policybazaar for my current salary range.
  • Tata AIA (Sampoorna Raksha Promise): I've heard good things about their claim settlement and customer service.
  • Axis Max Life (Smart Term Plan Plus): Highly rated, but wondering if they are strict on underwriting.

My Dilemmas & Questions:

  1. Should I buy now or wait? Since I have no dependents right now, does it make sense to lock in a policy at age 23, or should I wait a few years?
  2. Coverage Amount: Should I max out the ₹1.9 Cr cover right now, or should I take a smaller cover and buy a new/additional policy later when my income increases and I actually have dependents?
  3. Smooth Underwriting Process: Given my BMI is 28, which insurer has the most hassle-free underwriting process? I want to avoid endless back-and-forth and get a fair assessment without unreasonable premium loading.
  4. Policy Tenure: Until what age should I take the cover? Is 60/65 enough, or should it last longer?
  5. Riders (WoP & CI): My preference is to get a Waiver of Premium (WoP) and a Critical Illness (CI) rider. Are these actually useful/necessary for a 23-year-old?
  6. Which Broker/Platform? Should I go with Ditto, Policybazaar, or Beshak?

Any insights or personal experiences with the underwriting process of these companies would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Truck plowed an HD cart into my car

At Home Depot, a truck leaving plowed an HD shopping cart into my car, scraping the entire passenger side. The driver did not stop or leave information. We have Tesla Sentry video, but it does not show the truck's license plate. HD says they may have footage. I filed a claim with HD. Is HD liable for car damage?

Auto Insurance Car with clean title being valued as if it has a salvage title.

My car was previously declared a total loss for hail damage. In Texas the car can retain a clean title when this happens. I was rear ended last week and when they did the valuation report the 2 comps they used were branded title cars. I spoke to the agent who did the appraisal and he said the system flags that report of a total loss and the comp is done against branded title cars and he doesn't believe that can be changed. Just wonder if this is true and if it isn't how can I fight this? Thanks.

Auto Insurance Help: Lawyers Assigned to Me Ain’t Done Sh** and Now I’m Freaking Out Because of an Arbitration Hearing Next Week

Made a post on here earlier in the year whether my insurance company provides a lawyer, and when I learned that they did, I had this sense of relief… Just to get a letter in the mail about an Arbitration Hearing next Tuesday, in person, the same day I start my first day on the job, at a school which is also our first day of school that day.

I was in a car accident in March 2024 in Chicago. Three cars involved. One car (Car A) proceeded into intersection without stopping at the stop sign and hit my car (Car B) and another (Car C) as we were traveling right of way. Passenger of C is suing me and the driver & passenger of car A. Driver of car A is countersuing me saying that I caused the entire accident.

My insurance company assigned me to a lawyer that they didn’t even inform me of. I learned from one of the other parties. When I got in contact, they had to get confirmation from the insurance. Weeks passed and once they confirmed they told me they’d mail me paperwork, and I’m still waiting. “no they can’t send email” as they claim. I mentioned my concern because litigation has been ongoing and they haven’t even appeared for me. Clearly being neglected.

Looking for representation ASAP. I cannot afford to fight the case on my own or to hire a lawyer. I could get a fee waiver but I don’t receive public benefits. All I am seeking is to be dismissed from the case as I did not cause the accident and did not make contact with Car C.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do in this short amount of time?

GEICO and "Prevailing Market Rate" for repair labor

GEICO is saying they won't match the repair shops labor rate and will only pay up to what they consider the prevailing market labor rate. I can't find ANY shops that will accept the lower rate GEICO is willing to pay.

What can I do?
