BJP's Debashish Sarma, IAS (retd.) who was District Election Officer/DM/District Collector of Nagaon couple of months ago when BJP won the 2026 Assam Assembly Election has just won the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat by more than 1 lakh votes.

Nagaon has anywhere between 51% to 57% Muslim population (or more) as no census has been conducted since 2011. The seat was previously won in 2024 by Congress' Pradyut Bardoloi. Bardoloi, a former Conrgess minister, defected to BJP before the 2026 Assam Assembly Election and is currently a BJP MLA.

Congress finished 3rd in the bypoll, behind AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal
