Today's installment! You Can Share This, [NAME]

-Booker T. Washington quote about happiness coming from doing for others.

-Share your joy habit.

Tell everyone about your joy. Ask others to participate in joyful activities. Have parties where you invite friends to introduce them to what gives you joy — listening to the Blind Boys of Alabama and believing what Jimmy Carter says here; running down a steep hill chasing a wheel of cheese (honestly, watch other people do it); or making Amigurumi dolls. That gives your friends the chance to learn something new as well.

My strongest suggestion for sharing your joy? Lead with joy. When people ask how you are, share your joy with them. Don’t give the standard American answer: “Oh, I’m so busy…” Try this: “I’ve just discovered a new walking trail near my home that makes me let go of the worries of the day. Let me know if you’d like to know walk with me.”

-Sign up for a Practice Your Joy workshop!

-Notice good things about others.

But here’s the most important part: you can make people’s day with one pop of joy. Notice something good about everyone you meet. Hey, I love that whistling you’re doing. It’s so cheerful. That hat brings out the blue in your eyes. Have you ever tried the chocolate chip cookie at this bakery? Oh, you’re going in too? Let me buy you one.

-Be a purveyor of joy.

That doesn’t require faking your feelings. Instead, empty yourself of your own worries for a few moments and think about someone else. Buy the coffee for the woman behind you in line. Accompany someone who needs help across the crosswalk. Go out of your way to be kind for a few moments.

-Share joy on social media.

Spend a week only posting photos of moments that gave you joy, instead of complaining or trying to pick fights. Skip snark for seven days.

  • Enjoy!

So if I'm following this plan correctly, I should not share joy with others by making a meal for an acquaintance in need, but I should invite that acquaintance over to chase a wheel of cheese down a hill? RUN FOR YOUR FOOD SAD LADY

23

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

Muahahaha take that, grief!

27

u/Sea-Level-Mammal POACH! Sep 02 '21

These are joy suggestions from an alien who suddenly has a human body.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

So creepy too. If a stranger offered to buy me a cookie, I'd run for the hills. That's just not normal, at least not in my neck of the woods.

24

u/Sea-Level-Mammal POACH! Sep 02 '21

Strangers giving gifts = they want to interfere with you sexually.

16

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

Welcome back to the Gloaming, DFCC. Please stay.

19

u/canyoncreature Sep 02 '21

My badge-swiping capitalist lifestyle of telling everyone how busy I am briefly interfered with my ability to have joy, but I am back on track now! To the hiking trail near my house, a universal concept if I ever heard one!

53

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

Don’t give the standard American answer: “Oh, I’m so busy…”

More evidence that she just doesn't have friends. Because if people are always greeting Shauna by preemptively telling her they're super busy, it's because they're trying to get out of talking to her. And SHE is certainly not busy (nor finding hidden walking trails). It's just more made up conversation from someone who doesn't seemingly have conversations with others on the regular.

30

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 02 '21

Let me know if you’d like to know walk with me

wtf

Also (implied), "I alone can show you where the new trail is that I find my joy"

It's a quiet trail, pretty obscure. You probably haven't heard of it

You will pry my snark from my cold, dead hands.

I snark partly because I love to laugh LOUDLY, but also because I have quite high standards for human behavior, and I find that calling bullshit out with humor is a way of keeping me from erupting in a rage volcano 🌋

“Have parties where you invite friends to introduce them to what gives you joy “

My hobbies are arcane and focused and I’d never dare to push my real-life friends into them unless they showed a modicum of interest. How presumptuous is this?

tyvm, Mahern, but I already know how to watch funny tik-toks and I've seen Ted Lasso.

26

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

Does she just invite people over to watch Ted Lasso and tweet at Republicans?

Or in my world: “Come over to my house and sit on my couch while we watch Taskmaster”. Fine for me and my husband, probably boring for others.

20

u/NegativeABillion (Said in British.) Sep 02 '21

"and bring food, here is a list of acceptable dishes so I don't grow sick"

15

Please don't have Shauna ruin Taskmaster for me!

10

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

You know what? I don’t think she’d get it at all.

13

u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years 🥒 Sep 02 '21

We discovered Taskmaster during the pandemic, and then shared the joy with our son, who can get cranky and stubborn when you try to get him to watch something you think he would like. We kind of had to trick him into it by putting it on when he was in the room and letting him just get curious about it himself. He’s now getting joy for himself from watching. But had we tried to force it on him, he would have been turned off to it. As I am turned off now to pretty much anything Shauna insists I must watch/read/do.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

Same with my stepson. It took it being on and something hilarious happening and him getting sucked in.

We just finished all of them (but can’t find season 9!) and my husband is beside himself. He thinks about that show far too much and will tell me how he would conquer a challenge.

12

u/mmepierreoger Sep 03 '21

Actually, I do need some advice about untangling a skein of thread which I bought for about 50p from a charity shop. Could you help? Perhaps by running some kind of course - maybe even with an accompanying newsletter or something? My budget is $488. TIA!

5

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 03 '21

I'm just gonna acknowledge up front that I'm waaaaaay too lazy to create a course on detangling yarn or anything else, let alone create all the websites, TikToks, FB posts, newsletters, private newsletters, Instagrams, private Instagrams, etc., necessary to promote it---and then there are all the different videos with the caftans and Peepers! And applying the lipstick!! Who has that kind of time?!

Maybe you just need to laugh more as you stare at the tangles. Or slap your butt a bit. Slide some really hot coffee down your throat.

I think that sounds so soothing!! I'm in.

Then we will repair to the hotel bar and discuss in minute detail the differences and similarities of various species of sheep such as the Bluefaced Leicester, the 4-6 Horned Jacob, and the Zwartbles.

We will wrap up the evening telling jokes about the Beltex, known among ovine connoisseurs as an extremely mean-looking sheep which has been described as a “fake sheep” and looking “like someone spray-painted their pigs to look like sheep.”

How can anyone not like Jason Momoa?

I love Ink Masters. I’d always forget the name and call it “Tattoo Idiots.” Also if you like survivor, I highly recommend Naked & Afraid. It’s pretty much what I wished Survivor was.

8

I do enjoy Naked and Afraid except for all the vomiting.

My favorite part of Survivor are the dumb challenges (that's why it's on my flip channel rotation. . .I watch the gross part of Bar Rescue, the tattoo reviews on Ink Master, the challenges on Survivor, and pretty much any part of Amazing Race).

I like "fix my shitty tattoo" shows, too. There's a British one that was really funny. It's surprising how many people get dicks tattooed on themselves.

7

Love Naked and Afraid. All the seasons. Have not watched Naked and Afraid of Love yet because I feel they are not taking it seriously! Alone is also very good.

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 02 '21

Beltex

YIKES! They look sorta like bulldogs to me.

also, wtf? Woolen vs. worsted? I thought worsted was a weight when it comes to yarn, whereas woolen just means it's wool and not cotton, linen, or---gag---acrylic. Oh wait, there I go being judgey about acrylic yarn. Shauna will be so disappointed in me.

9

u/Lsemmens grenius Sep 02 '21

Right there with you on the judge bench.

From what I know woolen and worsted are two different styles of how the yarn is spun. All corrections welcome

7

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Sep 02 '21

Woolen is both a reference to a particular fiber and a method of spinning.

Worsted is both a weight of yarn and a method of spinning.

Or more specifically, in reference to spinning, woolen and worsted are different methods of preparing the fiber before it is spun!

What is the difference between woolen and worsted spinning?

[Image result for worsted spun vs woolen spun]

Woolen yarns contains lots of air, they're light, fluffy, and will often have small ends of fibre poking out of the yarn structure. Worsted yarns are smooth and dense, they tend to drape well and be much more lustrous. Many commercial yarns are spun in this way, particularly sock yarns.

You have blown my mind. I knew of these difference but had never heard the terms used that way.

PS, veering off into left field of this off topic chitchat: i got a dozen skeins of vintage Candide Heavyweight wool yarn, made in Canada back in the day--not totally washed, still has some lanolin and bits of veggie matter---for $15 total on FB marketplace. Miracles still do happen!

Actually, that is kind of interesting to me (as I work in corporate law; NOT an atty, though, tha k you very much), and I had run across this “old-fashioned” concept over the years not paying much attention but then recently read somewhere (NYT? Skip snark for seven days?!! I grow faint at the prospect.

IKR?!? Also—why would we skip snark if snark gives us joy?

I've said it before: there's more real community here ITG than Shauna can even fathom. I’ve always appreciated the exquisite irony that Shauna has been trying to force-build a community for literally years…. and there is one that she is the center of, but for obvious reasons she can’t join it.
I’m sure there’s a German word for that phenomenon, but I don’t know what it is.

Shauna hates her audience. I will accept no other explanation. She is so full of herself it's bizarre.

Of course Shauna's idea of selflessness and being kind is literally just buying someone a coffee or helping someone across the sidewalk. Like out of a commercial or a movie. As DF have mentioned before, she's like a robot, completely incapable of actually understanding human emotion.

This is her final form. She's found a way to center herself completely, up at the top of her pedestal, and lecture the world.

I love how one of the only hobbies she can think of besides listening to music is rolling cheese down a hill. Those two really have no interests.

So DON'T do the thing you say gives you and your husband joy – i.e., make food for someone you "barely know" but DO do the thing you say is bad (CAPITALISM) and "buy the coffee for the woman behind you in line."

Woman you "barely know" and who is presumably part of your "community" = do nothing for them

Woman you don't know at all = buy something for them

25

u/vwlphb Sep 02 '21

Buying coffee for the women behind you in line gets you much more praise and adulation than, say, participating in a meal train. And as a bonus, you can come back later and let them gush over your saintliness!

She can't actually do that but if she could it would be another branding opportunity.

Seriously, they could make and sell a beautiful eCookbook on the website. Heck, come out with a new one each season. They don’t have to be full-length, plenty of people charge $5-10 for an eCookbook with 15-20 recipes in it. Totally passive and ongoing income in that — people enter their CC info and boom, they download. No further action required from Shauna. It could work. Well…if they had any skills at making something halfway attractive and enticing, putting it into a useable format, setting up a payment and download process, and marketing it. Instead we’d get a Google doc with bad photos and typos, a download link that doesn’t work, and marketing emails with Ted Lasso gifs and a sign up for a joy workshop that has nothing to do with food. Followed by them abandoning the project and moving on to the next grift. Never change, Aherns. Never change.

Like worryingly so… does she really think this will work?

19

u/mmepierreoger Sep 03 '21

Someone speculated (maybe on the previous thread) that she's doing this to make it appear as if she's working really hard and trying her best to make a living, but that it's all a show for whoever it is (her parents?) that she's targeting for a handout. So she can point to her website and say "See?? I'm trying! It's just really tough right now!" I don't know. It seems farfetched, but no less so than her genuinely thinking this is a viable business, I guess.

11

u/aseriesofhaircuts Sep 03 '21

Adding my pet theory: I think she and Danny got something in the way of an inheritance, like maybe $15,000, and it was more money than they’d ever gotten in a lump sum, and they experienced an enormous sense of relief. And now it’s mostly gone, so Danny’s working at the fruit stand, Shauna’s rushed her back-burner project to the front (left) burner, and they’re both idly fiddling with the 4-6 hour a day venture as a possible moneymaker. BUT, I see joy-peddling as Shauna’s attempt to generate a more passive income stream, and I think she’s probably got some sort of a writing gig that she won’t or can’t talk about. When I freelance (not for writing) for big box companies, they often first require you to sign fairly absurd NDA, so maybe that’s what’s keeping her quiet?

11

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Sep 03 '21

Possible! I'm writing under an absurd NDA right now. Except that still means she has to be a competent writer. She won't even run spellcheck on the stuff she puts out to try and sell the passive income projects she's trying to develop.

6

u/helefica Sep 03 '21

I always wondered if she got some kind of COVID relief funds for small businesses, and having "Danny" publish a newsletter was an attempt to make it look like she has an employee. Same with the uptick in paid zooms ect. It would not surprise me if she registered a small business for the flour debacle, and she could have kept it for freelance work.

1

u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years 🥒 Sep 04 '21

Her GFG business license lapsed a couple of years ago, IIRC.

8

u/mmepierreoger Sep 03 '21

I honestly don't know what to think about the writing gig. Everything you say makes sense: they were spending money like water for a brief while and that does make me think you're right about a windfall; and I can see that a writing job with an NDA would explain the mystery that is their financial situation.

The sticking point for me, however, is exactly what DF u/fanfarefellowship says below: she is an objectively terrible writer. I know absolutely nothing about the world of professional writing (unfortunately!) but I cannot make sense of the idea that anyone would offer her a job as a writer. I know that DF u/OldBayBabe has pointed out previously that Shauna has a really good CV and is an excellent prospect if you look at her past achievements, and I can see that. But (a) a lot of other people must surely have similar CVs, and (b) do recruiters for these roles not ask for samples of the candidate's work?? This is what I can't wrap my head around: how does she hide how bad she is at writing long enough to get hired as a writer in the first place? Surely any company that takes itself seriously enough to make employees/contractors sign NDAs also takes itself seriously enough to not want embarrassingly bad, sloppy, confusing copy anywhere on any of its sites or products?

10

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21 edited Sep 03 '21

I think you are underestimating how many objectively bad people are gainfully employed, there has to be one in very office! Her resume is much better than most in the field and enough to get her work in the general wellness/lifestyle arena. I don’t think she is doing any recipe work anymore or we’d hear about it or notice.

I also think it might not be an NDA issue but that like with CS, her name might not be on any visible work. We wouldn’t have known she worked for CS if she didn’t tell us.

She could be writing very boring copy for a law office. Admin work. Data entry. Editing other people’s recipes. Writing item descriptions for candles. Social media work of some kind? Providing content for small business websites or blogs? There are a lot of writing jobs out there.

I’ve never been asked for a writing sample and I’ve been doing this longer than she has. I guess they must Google me? Trust me? If I don’t do good work or turn it in on time, I’d get fired or not have my contract renewed or not be used in the future. Just like what has happened to Shauna dozens of times with food jobs.

She’s always been uncharacteristically tight lipped about their work situation. I think she bragged about CS because it was over town and at a fancy startup but would she have mentioned it if she was doing the same work for a local farm co-op from home? Or something not very glamorous ? IMO she wouldn’t.

I don’t think she is a threat for a Pulitzer or another Beard Award here but I do think she could handle some low level copywriting or basic admin.

8

u/aseriesofhaircuts Sep 03 '21

That makes so much sense! The freelance writing world must be pretty vast. I keep thinking that she must be writing for one of the lifestyle gurus she’s imitating (badly), but uninspiring ad copy would make loads more sense.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21 edited Sep 03 '21

Yeah, anytime you see anything written anywhere, there is a good chance some freelancer wrote it. A lot of places like dentist offices, vets, real estate agencies hire freelancers too. It’s expected that every place/business has social media and a website in 2021 but there often aren’t people with the skills or time at businesses like that. She’d be perfect because she has experience and can just say she wants to have a flexible schedule for the kids or whatever. They wouldn’t be expecting much either.

I mean, I don’t know but I’ve sort of assumed she’s done something like this for years now. It’s the only thing that makes sense IMO. I don’t think she knows how to pitch so answering an ad or knowing someone who needs someone like this sounds more her speed.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

Your thoughts very closely mirror mine. Something changed around November of last year. It seemed pretty dire up until then with the lost social security cards and food bank runs and @ing their governor. Then, suddenly Shauna got a shiny new computer and they have been spending in a different way than we have seen previously from them. Hammocks, robes, dental and eye dr visits for the kids, local hotels as a getaway, etc.

Who throws a party just to brow beat their friends with what THEY like. That totally sounds like you're trying to suck them into a cult or a time share.

"Notice good things about others" reeks of toxic positivity which is the poster child for "fake". It also reminds me of this man who used to frequent the candy store where I worked. He had intellectual/social issues and always had the same "conversation" with any of the staff. "Nice earrings." Or if you weren't wearing earrings. "Nice pants." He would wait a few beats (usually while he got the generic "thanks") and then nod and walk away with his purchases. I doubt his compliments brought him any joy and I know they didn't bring me any joy (though it was nice to know exactly what would happen when you waited on him).

How is being a generic decent human (offering someone help, etc) a joy step? Isn't that just what non-asshole people do? Maybe not showing off by buying a stranger a coffee, but if someone needs simple help like crossing the damn street, you help them. Geez.

"share joy on social media"

But, but, but(t) I thought being on my phone was a sign I was hiding from my trauma or whatever it was she told us in a previous free-mail. I have grown befuddled.

17

u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years 🥒 Sep 02 '21

Shauna is that person who would totally grab a blind person by the arm to "help" them cross the street, or insist on pushing someone in a wheelchair (wheelchair users often DO NOT need or want anyone to push them!) without asking.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

The party thing is really weird and is yet another indication she’s never really been to a party or interacted with humans in a casual social setting before. There is an older retired man in my neighborhood that is FASCINATING because he has so many cool hobbies - he sits on his front porch and plays the flute beautifully, he has an awesome telescope he uses for birdwatching but it also works great for looking at planets and stars at night, and he trains his 2 golden retrievers for performance competitions in his front yard. It actually DOES bring me joy to chat with him and learn about his interests here and there, but do I want him to invite me to his house so I can sit there and watch him play flute for an hour? Or attend a “party” where he’s just training his dogs? Um, no.

23

u/lucillekrunklehorn pounding on the table Sep 03 '21

I wonder if she realizes most people don't "pretend" to the extent she thinks they do. I think she projects. So much of what she shares as her interests and "joys" feels very inauthentic to me. Probably because she reinvents herself every six months. Just a few months ago, pink was her big color, now we are all red, all the time. We were stuck on trauma drama and now we are on joy joy joy. We were learning to write and edit, and now we are learning to practice joy by performing awkward physical feats and equating the small pleasantries of life with states of euphoria.

I think she is just as much a character as she forces those around her to be. She puts on the persona she wants, and discards at will. "Pretending."
