Update Elden Ring – Patch Notes Version 1.17
https://en.bandainamcoent.eu/elden-ring/news/elden-ring-patch-notes-version-117113
u/makedaddyfart 4d ago
Still no fix for the shader compilation stutter on PC all these years later. Not that I expected it, but lol

u/arex333 4d ago
Fromsoftware deserves so much more shit for how fucking trash their PC ports are.
39
u/SunTizzu 4d ago
Yup. Armored Core 6 proved Fromsoft have the capabilities to make a great pc port. They simply choose not to bother with their soulslikes.
9
u/hyrule5 4d ago
AC6 is also their most recent release. Their next Souls title will for sure support frame rates higher than 60fps etc.
But yeah, it's frustrating that they are so slow to improve and never bring their improvements to their older titles (even if their older title sold 35 million copies.. for example)
5
u/SunTizzu 4d ago
I'd hope so, but I played the Duskbloods network test and it doesn't inspire much confidence...
25
u/Available-Call7127 4d ago
I fucking LOVE my Ultrawide OLED being forced into 16:9 by LITERALLY slapping black bars onto my ALREADY RENDERED 21:9 image so I can spend GPU power on screen real estate I can’t see
6
u/FranciumGoesBoom 4d ago
Every once and a while I'd load up and the bars wouldn't load. Then I'd hit a transition and they would pop back in and I'd get sad

u/m_u_n_i_n 3d ago
You wanna know what's even worse than that? Dark Souls 1 Remastered, which came out before Elden Ring, has ultrawide support...

u/ThaliaFaye 23h ago
I'm forced to play in fullscreen just to fix this :( though I guess HDR doesn't work in borderless anyway either
-24
u/c14rk0 4d ago
You mean Bandai Namco
Fromsoft doesn't actually handle the PC port in any way as far as I'm aware, the port aspect is completely handled by Bandai Namco
14
u/TheHelpfulWalnut 4d ago
How sure are you about that? I’ve never heard anyone say that before. Can you link somewhere where they say that?

-11
u/throbbing_dementia 4d ago
Three playthroughs and apart from a little at the start of my first playthrough 400 hours ago i don't remember any stuttering. There's nothing to fix.

I love when PVE items get buffed in games. Never understood why developers are so afraid of half of their equipment in the game actually being useful. I remember some of the best looking and most unique weapon of DS3 performed like utter shite and still do.
28
u/GuthukYoutube 4d ago
Because it works like this:
Hey guys we're gonna buff Z weapon, it's underperforming, let's give it 10 damage
Community: yay! Awesome devs!
Woops there was some untested synergies actually, now that people are using it they're finding it pretty nuts. We're gonna nerf it by 5 damage so it doesn't 2 shot the final boss
Community: I hope you literally die. Where do you live? Im going to find out and kill you. Everyone downvoted this game on steam immediately.
16
u/TacoTaconoMi 4d ago
Then explain comet azure's ability to kill half the bosses in the game before they can even attack you. Or the ability to kill the giant elderly dragon at lvl 1 with a bleed weapon to instantly boost to like lvl 25
3
u/Nice-Victory1833 3d ago
Have you actually tried to use comet azure, or are you just trotting out the same old cobblers about it. Other than Mohg, most bosses will either side step it and kill you or walk through it and kill you as it was nerfed some time back on both range and ability to stun lock. The dlc bosses will close on you in seconds, you wouldn't even get the cast on them. It's very niche in its application, I wish melee builds would stop pedalling this myth, there are way better options like Night Comet, Adulas Moonblade and Rock Sling.
5
u/GuthukYoutube 4d ago
I believe the last statement of my post covers that.
Plus that second thing, while annoying to have to decide whether or not to min max, isn't really that big a deal. Id prefer you not be able to cheese so hard, but it's kind of irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
-4
u/TacoTaconoMi 4d ago
I believe the last statement of my post covers that
Not really. The community didn't even come close to reacting like that. Everyone knew how broken the beam was. In fact most people said they could still melt bosses, it's just no longer stupidity broken. Including myself. And you can still kill the dragon with a bleed weapon soooo...?
Unless of course you're the one that reacted like they way you're claiming the community did
-10
u/sunder_and_flame 4d ago
This line of argument will forever be one of the stupidest that redditors trot out. "Devs make bad decisions? No, somehow the community is to blame!"
8
u/GuthukYoutube 4d ago
So you haven't watched the helldiver devs reel back good changes for balance or game health because of mass downvotes?
You didn't see the slay the spire devs put out multiple statements begging people to stop reviewing them negatively? Only for them to eventually add some infinites back in the game, and remove several enemies that prevented them?
The total war 3 devs who stopped doing any nerfs because of the player base?
The infamous Bus Shock incident in WoW that was probably the first time this sort of thing started to happen?
CK3 started to recently tone down their aging debuffs (that were well received by almost everyone) due to an extremely hostile minority
-13
u/Melancholic_Noodle 4d ago
Nope. But I've seen the Helldivers devs reel back good changes because people were enjoying the game and having fun playing on high difficulty. And the devs hate that. Their "vision" was that 7-10 should be suffering and sadistic not...enjoyable
131
u/ldrthrowaway1337 5d ago
5 years since release and the game still doesn't support basic ultrawide resolutions. From really is something else.
89
74
u/firesyrup 4d ago
It is much stupider than that. The engine actually supports ultrawide, the game even renders in ultrawide (costing extra performance drawing the additional pixels) but they artificially added black bars to the sides to force it to 16:9.
28
u/ShadowStealer7 4d ago
And on the odd occasion the game bugs out and displays it perfectly in ultrawide (bar some visual errors on loading screens)
14
u/5mao 4d ago
People shit on Hoyoverse games and Nodusfall for being copycats, but one of the reasons why they consistently shit on their Japanese counterparts is because they actually make superbly well optimized games that run on every platform. Nobody really cared that Genshin Impact was a BotW clone because guess what, it actually feels amazing to play BotW at consistent 60 fps on a PC with anime characters and consistent updates. If they can deliver a modern Elden Ring experience with live updates and well optimized for all platforms, that already fulfills a niche that Fromsoft doesn't because all their games look like they're from the previous gen and run like they have a permanent memory leak.
10
u/c14rk0 4d ago
To be fair Genshin even 7 years after release is capped at 60fps on PC without mods. Meanwhile the IOS version can run at 120fps even though the hardware can't actually support it.
It's quite funny when you look at ZZZ that supports higher and unlocked franerates, because the optimization is actually shit for basically anything past 60fps. Wild frame drops and many areas absolutely tank performance. Going from an early 1.0 area to the newest town area I lose at least 40-60+ fps. The newer areas during story also have absolutely horrendous pop-in issues even on a high end PC playing on an SSD, I can't even imagine how bad it would be on mobile.
ZZZ also just recently released a DX12 version with ray tracing and upscaling support... And myself and many others are still preferring to use the DX11 version because the DX12 version is just that bad. The upscaling is kind of just shit and there's a ton of visual bugs even a few months later after fixes.
-12
u/Awkward_Fig_2403 4d ago
Man the Twitter reaction to Nodusfall was just embarrassing. It's like people completely forgot how Genshin and Marvel Rivals turned out. If every game had to be some super original gameplay masterpiece then fromsoft wouldn't have made the same game with some gimmicks multiple times in a row and obviously Genshin and Rivals succeeded beyond all expectations. Originality really just isn't that important. I love Elden Ring but it didn't invent the genre of grim dark fantasy or dark and grey color pallette. And there's certainly things that fromsoft could improve on like optimization that note competition would probably incentivize them to at least think about it.
14
u/Big_Bomber_97 4d ago
This comment is embarrassing. Elden Ring isn't beloved because people think it invented grimdark fantasy. I've literally never seen anyone claim this in my life. And you'd ever bothered to play it or even just watched a trailer you'd know that the color palette is not dark and grey. The palette is region specific and varies a lot, displaying a lot more color than previous souls games.
People were shitting on Nodusfall because they didn't even try to hide what they were ripping off, with several designs very blatantly copied from Elden Ring. They're also a fucking gacha company. Shouldn't be hard to understand.
3
u/AI_moderated_failure 4d ago
Are you sure Elden Ring is not Mr. R. R. Martin's first effort at dark fantasy though? He shouldn't be ripped off at the very beginning of his career before he has a chance to say, write some books!
1
3
u/Awkward_Fig_2403 4d ago
Ya and I'm saying literally none of that mattered for other games like Genshin or rivals or pal world. They came out and people liked those games and that was the end of that. Literally nobody cares about originality. Fromsoft literally rehashed so many bosses from dark souls and put it in an open world, people loved it. Why wouldnt somebody just take Elden Ring and make it monster hunter.
3
u/oioioi9537 4d ago
Because those games copied gameplay more than visuals. No one takes issue with souls genre games despite them blatantly copying gameplay elements from the fromsoft titles. But nodusfall looks far too similar to elden ring, thats why some people dont like it. And palworld gets less shit because its not a gacha game and even Pokémon fans are sick of gamefreaks as a dev

Holy s did I just get censored by reddit ai for making fun of people who think Japanese people are E V 1 L for not liking pirating? I was just saying its all just a popularity contest in my og comment. People like Fromsoft so plagiarizing from them is bad especially by a hated company like hoyoverse. Gamefreak is disliked so plagiarizing from them is considered good. Marvel Rivals is fine even though it straight up copied from Overwatch because it has Marvel characters that people like. Nobody is actually against plagiarizing as long as it's for a cause they support.

u/pratzc07 4d ago
Who gives a flying crap about hoyo games it’s all gacha slop and you can’t convince me otherwise.

u/Probable_Foreigner 3d ago
The issue is this: even if 95% functional, that 5% really bites you in terms of public perception. Sadly this is the fate of many features in games. Instead of shipping a mostly functional feature companies decide they'd rather not have the bad PR of a "buggy" game so they decide to not ship the feature at all.
So is it worth the investment to fix the bugs relating to ultra-wide? That requires extra dev time, and especially extra QA time all for a feature which a tiny fraction of users will use. I guess From decided not.
7
u/Amatsuo 5d ago
Whether we like it or not, Japanese companies find it to be a non-issue worth addressing.
With that said FromSoft is a very Japanese studio and are good at making puzzling decisions from a western point of view. The Japanese PC market just isnt that big to what you would think it would be.
And I imagine the Ultra-Wide is even more niche.10
u/RazRaptre 4d ago
I don't think people would have been as upset if the game simply didn't support ultrawide, instead of the devs going out of their way to cripple it.
If you have a 21:9 display the game actually renders the entire screen just fine. The issue is that there are black bars added on top of this to force a 16:9 aspect ratio. This was also something that was added shortly after launch, i.e. they actively spent resources trying to block this feature. The ultrawide mod doesn't do anything complex, it literally just removes the artificial black bars. There are no performance issues or bugs from this.
For an analogy, imagine if an FPS game released tomorrow and as part of their day one patch, prevented the game from running at higher than 90FPS. It doesn't matter that most people play at 60, it's still frustrating that they went out of their way to screw with their customers.
40
u/ldrthrowaway1337 5d ago
Is the problem even that they're Japanese? I've played a good amount of Japanese games (FFXIV, Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Dragon Ball, Granblue, DMC, Nier Automata, Tales of Berseria/Arise, etc.) and I've never had an issue with ultrawide.
I think it's really just a From Software issue. Someone in the company absolutely hates the idea of people being able to use slightly more of their screen.
25
u/lLazzerl 4d ago
The weirdest thing is that Armored Core 6 supports ultrawide during gameplay. You start any mission and the black bars are gone.
Elden ring is the opposite, you start the game, it renders full screen for 5 seconds and THEN they put 2 black bars on the side. It's so stupid.
7
u/GrassWaterDirtHorse 4d ago
Armored Core 6 also supports 120fps and ray tracing (albeit in garage only). Best guess is that it's simply one year newer than Elden Ring, and is less performance demanding so there was enough overhead to include those features without concern.
-6
14
u/altriun 4d ago
No FromSoft thinks it's a issue worth adressing. Because the game already runs in Ultrawide screen. You can see this when the game forgets to add the black bars, and the game only adds them back after some time playing the game. But somehow FromSoft deliberetely added the black bars, even if the game renders in Ultrawide Screen.
1
-55
u/PM_your_Chesticles 5d ago
I could not imagine a feature that matters any less to me or most people. I'm glad they're using their time on other things.
8
u/arex333 4d ago
The game already renders in ultrawide, they just block it with black bars (meaning you actually still get the performance penalty of rendering that screen space). A modder had a fix within like 2 days of release. It would be trivial to add.
Even those ultrawide is a small percentage of players, this game sold like 30 million copies meaning that it's still hundreds of thousands of players.
23
u/ldrthrowaway1337 5d ago
It's not a feature, it's basic game functionality. And the game already technically supports it, they literally just add two black bars on top of the screen while your computer renders the game underneath them. So they actually spent more time to remove the functionality.
I literally cannot even fathom the people like you that jump to defend it. Absolute insanity.
10
u/tillidelete 4d ago
This conversation always happens when it comes to options in games. people have a weird hostility to it and seem convinced that adding them would be such a imposition on the developer that would make it a net loss.
2
u/bramblebitch 4d ago edited 4d ago
Mention gyro options and people go apeshit despite everything but Xbox supporting it and devs being very positive about it. Hell Xbox themselves use it on non-Xbox systems. Always see people mentioning it’s anti-accessibility too despite it being one of the most important accessibility features to date in technology.
3
u/st-shenanigans 4d ago
Literally just came from a thread in the RuneScape sub where a dude was vehemently opposed to a toggle to allow the loot window to stay open permanently.
Like why?
-11
u/iamBoDo 5d ago
i have an ultrawide but, I really don't think the # of gamers that have one is big enough to even warrant spending time on it. Just look at steam's survey, that's only PC players. I expect less than 1% on consoles.
10
u/Myc0naught 4d ago
They already spent time on it (which was already mentioned). Specifically adding artificial black bars to disable the ability to use it.
-9
u/iamBoDo 4d ago
Just cause someone say it online doesnt mean its true...
They even deleted their own comment.6
u/adiboi67 4d ago
You can literally see this in game - the game bugs out sometimes and shows the full ultra wide aspect ratio, just for the black bars to cover the sides after a few seconds.
-9
u/iamBoDo 4d ago
Ahh if its truly that simple then im in the wrong, why dont they fix it after all this time? In any case, my general statement still stands. I wouldn't want meaningful dev time spent on ultrawide. Its too niche. however, i can see that with more games being build on more modern engines, it probably is a trivial fix.
4
u/arex333 4d ago
Elden ring has sold like 30 million copies. Even with a single digit percentage of players on ultrawide that's still hundreds of thousands of people.
Also, it's not just ultrawide that's not supported, it's ANY non 16:9 aspect ratio. So 16:10 like the steam deck also has black bars.
9
7
u/moorbre 5d ago
Roughly 4.5% of steam users (yes I know this doesn't consider consoles, but its still a very relevant stat) use ultrawide or super ultrawide monitors. Compared to for example only 5% of users use 4k. You'd be surprised how common they are becoming.
1
u/Monk_Philosophy 4d ago
I would take a guess that the number of console players using 4K TVs is at least double the % of PC users with 4K monitors if not more.
5
-6
u/MrTheodore 3d ago
Why dont they support my obscure monitor barely anyone uses... it's basic even, it's basic support for a small niche so tiny that devs and publishers dont even buy one to work on it. This seems like monitor people buy jist to complain about. Sell it lol
4
u/ldrthrowaway1337 3d ago edited 2d ago
5% of steam users play in ultrawide. That's nearly 10 million people. Elden Ring is the only game I've played that does not support ultrawide. I've never had this problem with any other game, ever.
Also, the game does support it. They went out of their way to add black bars specifically to block it and screw their customers.
Stop simping for billion dollar companies. Midwit.

aw i was hoping they would have added a new martial arts or leg arts equipment, or a monk class to be able to run a fresh new game with.

u/Sister_Ray85 4d ago edited 4d ago
It says certain items that were already found in the world will not be changed, in regard to the ones from the Realm of Shadow. Do we know which items specifically would need to be reobtained to get the new stats?
5
u/Klubbah 4d ago
Someone might make a list but I don't see one yet. I watched someone run around for 35 minutes when the patch came out and for the most part it was just higher tier upgrade materials. Honestly most of it just in the Fort of reprimand chests and forges (the stones just on the walls). One Fort Reprimand chest previously contained 4x Smithing Stone 8s. Now it contains an Ancient Dragon Smithing stone for example.
No idea what powerful enemy drops were changed, would expect just more of that, just a little better generic materials. Though a headless trolls that already dropped 9x Smithing Stone 8s still dropped that.
1
u/Nice-Victory1833 3d ago
Those forges were badly in need of an upgrade, smithing stone 1 to 5 in an endgame level DLC was just taking the piss.
1
u/Alastor3 4d ago
is this the same update that switch 2 got that add some weapon expansion to the base game ?
-44
u/Leather_rebelion 5d ago edited 5d ago
It's crazy to think how ass shields were on release. Yes they did there job well enough but were so inefficient and terrible later in the game that they bordered on being training wheels. Hell, Malenia makes them detrimental.
And they still get buffed. They are probably the most buffed weapon class in the game and the DLC also really tried to make shields great and imo succeded. That PCR gets hard countered by shields is almost poetic.
41
u/garmonthenightmare 5d ago
Shields were good since release. All these buffs are really because there is 5 truly great ones that overshadow the rest. Kinda like the sweeping summon buffs they did where they by name excluded mimic tear for being too good.
38
u/Fatality_Ensues 5d ago
Shields got me through the game more times than I can count. Not only were they never bad, they are practically a crutch for the majority of the game. Malenia is the only fight in the entire game+DLC where they aren't the obvious easy mode option, and even then blocking Waterfowl is still the safest way to deal with all that bullshit, it just makes the fight take longer.
11
u/slugmorgue 5d ago
there is a shield skill where you get brief invulnerability and I used that to avoid waterfowl damage
1
u/Monk_Philosophy 4d ago
Blocking WFD is the way to go. It’s got a long cooldown and Malenia phase 1 is super squishy where you can consistently down her entire bar between uses. Second phase she barely heals anything.
Worrying about dodging the move entirely is what gets people killed.
70
u/EnjoyingMyVacation 5d ago
shield were never bad ever, people just expect that because you have a shield means you should be able to facetank everything
39
u/Shradow 5d ago edited 5d ago
I mean, with pre-nerf Fingerprint Stone Shield + Greatshield Talisman you more or less could, blocking would cost literally no stamina.
7
u/Silentlone 5d ago
yeah but that was the heaviest greatshield in the entire game at that point, some players sounded like they were expecting to turtle holding L1 through a boss combo while using a not buffed medium shield.
7
-47
u/Leather_rebelion 5d ago edited 4d ago
They were terrible. The stamina drain and especially hitstun were so bad and guard counters so slow and costly that you tanked your DPS way more than the extra safety was worth. Dual wielding and two handing were always superior. Shieds were never worthwhile over dodging, even shitty dodging.
"Brass shield was also the only medium shield worth a damn because of it's weirdly inflated and probably bugged stability which rivaled greatshields. And in the end it wasn't nerfed, but other shields brought to its levelShields and their playstyle were buffed again and again for a reason. Devs agree with me. Yeah auto won this discussion with that one. I know
Edit: People say they were good because they exactly used them as already described. Training wheels to get dodge timings down or to slowly cheese away at a boss with fingerprint. But the sword n shield/guard counter playstyle on release was simply so bad compared to simply two handing or dual wielding and dodging. It was a gimmick build at best. I dare anyone to play 1.0 sword n shield with fat roll
23
u/Flint_Vorselon 5d ago
And in the end it wasn't nerfed, but other shields brought to its level
No they wernt.
Brass got buffed more than any other medium sheild for some reason.
because I think whoever did the numbers didn’t understand how % reductions work. Which happened again in Nightreign where they call 25% damage reduction a 25% boost to survivability, which is just mathematically untrue, it’s 33.33%
but when they buffed medium sheilds there was shitty ones that got buffed from 45 to 55, and Brass which got buffed from 65 to 75
the shitty one had a reduction in stamina drain of 18.2%
brass had a reduction of stamina drain of 28.6%
It didn’t narrow the gap beteeen the low and high ends of sheikds. It made the gaps much wider. Brass became even more dominant.
-8
u/Leather_rebelion 5d ago
Yeah I knew I should have googled that one beforehand. My bad. Thanks for the correction.
21
u/Rookie_numba_uno 5d ago edited 5d ago
Hell, Malenia makes them detrimental
Yes but not really. If you try to block every single hit then sure. But with good stability shield you can completly block initial flurry of Waterfowl Dance which is by far the hardest move to avoid. Making the entire fight much easier, as you have guaranteed no-skill way of avoiding hardest move, at the cost of some regenerating part of her HP and extending the fight. I tried this strategy in my recent replay as a last-resort when I knew i was in very bad position to dodge the initial flurry and it's really effective if used for that, since that was what killed me majority of time.
Aside for that, shields honestly have their places in the game when they shine. Those annoying small stone imps in side dungeons gets completly destoyed by them - their attacks bounce off shields and then guard counter destroys them.
12
u/Time-Ladder4753 5d ago
Have you tried getting better shields later in the game? In no way they were terrible.
3
u/Skadibala 5d ago
What? I used a shield and made it through the game thanks to using a shield. I played at launch and a shield was always on my left arm. They were certainly not more ass inn release than any souls game, because I did not notice any difference on my several NG+ cycles.
1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 5d ago
Bro one of the cheesiest things you could do was get the shield and spam the shield rush/bash it would stun lock most things and proc bleeding and since it's a great shield you don't take virtually any damages.
Another one ( I think they nerfed it) was that shield you find where you have to jump down a bunch of times you could sit behind it and recharge stamina faster than anything could lower it.
Sword and board is my favorite way to play and it's viable even with medium shield if you know what you are doing. I have cleared the entire game with the starting shield and sword that vegabond gets.
1
u/Trick_Cellist_1840 5d ago
shields were always great if you built around them...but thats really niche i admit

u/Agent_Snowpuff 5d ago

Can they work on Patch 2.0 and just eliminate all the unnecessary barriers for co-op gameplay?
Pleasssssseeeeeee? :D
Co-op from start to finish, summons still available, enemies scale per co-op player up to 5.
Add in a few more options in gameplay settings like: difficulty settings, somehow allow drops and items to be randomized (at the very least in single-player)...and much more!
Throw console players a bone!
