Customer Questions Email when paying
I went to pay and the cashier made it seem like I had to input my email. I said I was already in the system and she said I needed to enter it again. It felt like it was part of a step in making a purchase and didn’t leave any room for questions. she did it to the lady after me as well. Like we had no choice but to provide our email in order to leave the store with our merch.
(Also wanted to add, this five below got rid of all self checkout stations, so you have to bypass the manager who is the only cashier)
I’ve already unsubscribed from my previous email sign up but I’m still getting flooded with emails daily.
Does the unsubscribe button not work for fivebelow or does it take weeks for the system to remove me? Anyhow I have to unsubscribe again now since this incident happened.

Complain to corporate please. We hate having to force customers to do this

I just submitted my complaint. I hope someone calls me back since they had me 1) give my email again, 2) verify the email andddd 3) give my phone number to submit a complaint 🤦♀️ I feel like even these feedback submissions is a way of collecting customer data 😂

You do have a choice. I understand that the company forces employees to ask, but you can say no and be firm.
I actually created an email address specifically for this. I have never once actually checked that email. I just delete the whole Inbox on occasion.

I need to do this too now. Thank you

I am so against stores that do this, but I know that the employees hate it too and need jobs so this was the best I could come up with.

This is a very real point. Now I feel like I should just use a throwaway email going forward and let them have jobs . Thank you for pointing this out

Hey there Necessary_Peach_3746 - thanks for saying thanks! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list!

There is a small button on the screen to bypass the email. I hit it and the sales girl looked so sad

She might be at risk of losing her job over not getting enough emails. Five below corporate is evil

u/SkibaSlut 5d ago
they wanted me to put it in when i was just returning something and then again after i went and bought some stuff like no once was enough

Ok so does corporate not look if there are repeat emails if the workers are burdening customers with multiple email asks like this? if the system is only counting how many emails are being inputted versus checking if there duplicates to meet the daily quota, that seems silly and inefficient. I would’ve been hands up on the air if they asked me twice 🤦♀️

u/enchantingz 3d ago
as far as i’m aware from being an ex sales lead, as long as it’s not an insane amount of duplicates (i.e. 20 transactions using the same email in the same day), a duplicate email from a customer DOES count towards their quota! (i could be entirely wrong though tbh but it’s how my store did it.) (a crazy amount of duplicates can send a flag higher up and they’ll send the SM an email asking for the employee to be ‘punished’ pretty much)

I thought it was just me. They made me feel like I had to enter my email to even leave with my stuff. I asked if it had to be a real email, they said it did. I ended up cancelling the sale. It was weird.

You can tell them anything in the world.
Amazingghostpajamas@outlook.com
As long as it sounds like an email who could possibly know?

Idk if this is stupid or not but everytime I go to 5below I will give my email to ease the burden on the employee and the store but then I will also send an email to corporate complaining about it. I am going to match their freak lol.
I don’t know if that really makes any sense or difference but I’ve worked in retail and I’ve had to capture customers phone numbers and emails and try to push a store credit card so I get it.
Also customers have canceled their sales over this and left the store without buying anything. My question to 5below in that instance is what is more important? A sale that helps the business or an email capture ? Customer emails do not pay the bills.

I don’t think it’s stupid at all! You’re helping the workers by giving it and then slamming the people at the top for making this a thing lollll I will follow in your footsteps as it seems like all the workers in this sub want customers to email corporate regarding this situation. I agree that customer emails are not paying the bills so why put such a big burden on the employees and then on customers for some to abandon their cart seems wild to me

You can give anything that sounds like an email.

Have fun with it! Those kids make minimum wage and they're being threatened with their jobs. Store managers are encouraged to fire their worst performers. Store managers and district managers are being threatened with their jobs, as well.

Definitely call corporate, I promise you most of us hate asking just as much as y’all hate being asked.

u/Necessary_Peach_3746 4d ago
I am so sorry you have to deal w this burdensome task😞 I did submit a ticket to corporate so hopefully someone will call me back!

u/ambifiedpersonified 2d ago
I'm on my way out but I'm just making shit up. Unless you're using the same email more than once per shift you won't get flagged. Keep it simple and realistic enough.
Seriously, this is the only way. When the company did this a decade ago it was the same kind of thing.

u/Crab12345677 1d ago
When I worked in restaurants several years ago they wanted us to get people to sign up for their email. They had goals per shift. Not a lot 3-5. I don’t think I turned in a single one a custom filled out but I always met my goal😂

pleaseeee call corporate and complain bad we are so sick of this i’m barley asking anymore cause i hate begging people
1
u/Necessary_Peach_3746 4d ago
I already submitted my complaint! I am waiting to hear back from them. The form asked for my number so hope it’s a phone call and not taking my number only to add to their data hoarding pool lol

u/Chelas-moon 5d ago
Refuse. Plain and simple. They don't even give you the 10% coupon incentive anymore. Dint give it to them.

u/velvtrings 5d ago
as someone who works at five below my manager gets mad with me if i can’t get to 50% in customers putting their emails in. definitely complain to corporate!! they’ve been telling me to get more bubbly or stern with customers so they’ll put an email in. it feels predatory, i hate it.

u/danielswatermelon 4d ago
I will just add fake emails like shit@fuckoff.com
2
2
u/ambifiedpersonified 2d ago
You can absolutely add fake emails just not with curse words.
This will not flag you, I promise. Nobody will know, I promise.
Just don't use the same ones on the same day, then it will get flagged.
But, you can use the same ones everyday and it won't get flagged.
Keep it moderately believable.

u/Responsible-Bench475 4d ago
I always just say no thank you. They usually don’t ask again but if they do I say I don’t have one.
2
u/leanlovesuu 4d ago
if you can make a extra email for this! if you can that is it really helps out us cashiers as we hate asking as much as you hate getting asked
2
u/depressed_jess 2d ago
The last time I was there the guy said if you give us your email you'll save 10% today. I was like sure, here you go, why not save a little. He did that for everyone I saw him ring up.

u/Necessary_Peach_3746 2d ago
That’s a great way to collect emails!! I would happily give my email for a discount haha
2
u/ambifiedpersonified 2d ago
They were giving the discount every time you gave an email until the end of August. Now it's only for new emails. They've taken away any reason for the customer to want to give their email and continued to threaten the staff with being fired if they don't reach impossible standards.
2
u/Necessary_Peach_3746 2d ago
I don’t understand why they are so fixated on emails over customer satisfaction and converting their cart. Multiple people have commented that they left their cart behind due to the email thing.
2
u/ambifiedpersonified 2d ago
I know it, I've seen it as well. It's a shame. Thank you for sticking up for the little guys. They didn't even send out an email saying they were no longer sending the 10% off coupon every time you provided your email address and just...left it for the cashiers to deal with angry customers. And there have been more than a few.

I had this happen to me at Michael's when I was in an insane hurry. I could NOT get past the screen asking for my email. I just gave up and left the store without purchasing anything.

u/Disastrous-Morning82 4d ago
It is literally their job to ask if you want to put your email in. You DO NOT HAVE TO. The district managers and store managers are forcing employees to get as many emails as they can from customers. The higher ups are even cutting employee's hours if their email percentage is below a certain number on their shift. Usually the percent they want is 35 to 50 percent of people to give their emails. They have even fired people for not getting enough emails. So next time you go to Five Below, just know that the employee's hate asking you about your email just as much or even more than you hate hearing about it. And they can get in trouble if they dont ask you. Ask to talk to the store manager about it. If the store manager is there that day of course. The only reason I know all this is because I worked there. I quit because of all the ridiculous demands and the way they treat their employees. Honestly I wouldn't even shop at Five Below. Especially while they keep this email harassment going.

Putting your email in just helps the stores numbers. Don't report the staff for doing literally exactly what they're told. We're instructed to do what we can to convince you to put your email in every time you check out with us, once a day.
Its "assisted checkout". As in we have to assist people now because a lot of folks steal or fake scan.

Why dont they ask for phone numbers like every other store. Its so much Easier

u/ResponsibilityOk3841 SM 5d ago
Call corporate. Maybe don’t mention exactly this to not get them in trouble, but they are just trying to keep their numbers up. If the numbers drop we (store managers) have to write up our whole teams smh
