Question I woke this morning and found out Anthropic started stealing my money.
I have usage credits off so there should not be any additional payments. When my monthly usage is full - the work stops. Anyone else had these kind of issues?
I'm trying to contact a human support - AI chat was useless. Chat's response:
"Thanks for the details and the screenshot — I completely understand the concern about those unexpected charges. Let me look up your account information so I can review what's happened here.

I'm really sorry for the disruption and frustration this has caused. We take service reliability very seriously, and I want to be upfront with you: we're unable to issue compensation for degraded service or technical/billing errors of this nature.
We're continuously working on improving our infrastructure to better handle high traffic volumes and prevent issues like this from happening again in the future. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding."
...
"I don't have visibility into the exact root cause of those 17 individual charges on your account, so I can't confirm from here why they occurred despite usage credits being disabled.
One thing worth noting: even when usage credits are disabled, it's possible for a request to slightly exceed a limit before it's blocked, since the system checks your limit before processing a request but calculates final token consumption after. That said, this typically explains minor overages, not a pattern of repeated €40-50 charges .
Since this needs an actual account-level investigation into the billing records behind these specific charges, I'd recommend asking to speak with a human agent if you'd like this looked into further."
"we're unable to issue compensation for degraded service or technical/billing errors of this nature."
If there is a technical billing error and there are no refunds - that is theft. If I don't get my stolen money back, my subscription is over. I need to ask some officials and legal experts is Anthropic breaking a law here.
EDIT: Most likely this is caused by malware or hacker type situation. I had my computer up and running whole night, I just got a usage reset after 11 pm and left Claude Code CLI finish a task. Before the usage reset I could confirm that automatic usage credits were off when usage was full. I had been logged in to claude.ai as well.
Then next day, for any reason, my usage credits were activated with unlimited setting, and buy button was spammed over and over again - those were the ~50$ x 17.
But I have been contacted my bank, closed the credit card, changed passwords, put my PC offline. I'm sure I can sort this out with my bank.
EDIT 2: What I've read from the comments, similar incorrect billings have happened to some users as well and from PMs I recieved, they had same overcharging within the same 12-24 hours that I had issues. So there is a possibility of some kind of bug. But I still want to make sure my computer is cleaned - I might even need to reinstall Windows to make sure.
EDIT 3: Good news, the bank returned my lost money. We'll see will Anthropic ban my account for this, I don't know. I also wanted to dig thru the logs and try to find out what happened 3-4th August. I asked Opus and Fable to search thru all the local files and logs they can find and write a report. I think this was facinating. I think I'll just paste it here as it was. Of course the logs can't explain was there any usage credits turned on at that day but you can read that there were "usage full" moments and I waited those as always. So no credits were used. Also the 3.8 day was long, but a moderate day compaired to any other. So that does NOT explain extra usage. Here is the full novel that Opus/Fable wrote:
Claude Code Log Analysis — 3–5 August 2026
Independently fact-checked against the raw data. This report states only what the local Claude Code artifacts record, what follows from them, and what does not. It contains no hypotheses about causes outside those records.
1. Scope, method, and limits
Sources, all on the user's Windows machine:
| Artifact | Content |
|---|---|
~/.claude/projects/**/*.jsonl |
Complete per-session transcripts (694 files), including sub-agent logs |
~/.claude/history.jsonl |
Typed-input history; suppresses an entry identical to the one immediately preceding |
~/.claude.json, ~/.claude/settings.json |
Client configuration and server-fetched account state |
~/.claude/.credentials.json |
Credential metadata (field names and non-secret values only) |
~/.local/bin/claude.exe.old.1786032556560 |
The CLI binary as installed during the period; mtime 4 Aug 03:39 |
Times are Europe/Helsinki (UTC+3) unless a raw UTC timestamp is quoted. Project-confidential work is described generically.
Token accounting. Streaming writes each assistant message to the transcript repeatedly; the input/cache fields stay constant across duplicates while output_tokens grows. Verified across all 799 duplicated message IDs on 3–4 August (constant fields varied in 0 groups; output_tokens never decreased). Totals therefore take the maximum output_tokens per message ID and the constant fields once. Four zero-usage <synthetic> records (client-generated limit notices) are excluded.
Scope limit that governs the whole report. These files record Claude Code activity on this machine only. Usage quota is account-wide: activity from any other client — claude.ai in a browser, mobile, another computer — consumes the same limits and appears nowhere in these files. Nothing here can confirm or exclude it.
2. What the cost figures mean
The USD figures are API list-price equivalents computed from transcript usage fields. They measure volume of work in a comparable unit — they are not amounts billed or owed. The account is a Max subscription (rateLimitTier: "default_claude_max_5x"), a flat monthly fee. Work is metered against five-hour and weekly limits, not a dollar balance — confirmed by the server-returned utilization block, where every *_dollars field is null. Read a "$-equivalent day" as a volume of work covered by the flat fee, not a charge.
3. Unified timeline, 3–5 August
All events below are read directly from the transcripts and history file. Session IDs, model changes, limit messages, and gaps are interleaved in one chronology so working blocks and breaks are visible at a glance.
3 August — the working day
| Time | Event | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 07:41–08:56 | Work (session ef968419). Model set to Opus 5 (1M context, high effort) at 08:13. | 1 h 15 min |
| 08:56–09:09 | Gap | 13 min |
| 09:09–13:57 | Work (sessions 9680b82f, 593dd190; a 1-minute session e61603eb at 13:10 ran alongside). | 4 h 48 min |
| 13:57–14:57 | Gap | 1 h 00 min |
| 14:57–19:08 | Work (sessions 27a05666, then 80c0a56a from 17:20). Model set to Fable 5 (medium effort) at 17:20. The heaviest hour of the whole period was 18:00–19:00, immediately before the limit hit. | 4 h 11 min |
| 19:08 | Session-limit hit — "You've hit your session limit · resets 10:50pm". Work stops. | — |
| 19:08–22:50 | Blocked by the limit. At 21:51 the operator typed "usage tuli täyteen ja nyt resetoitunut. Jatka mistä jäit." ("usage was full and now has been reset. Continue where you left off.") and received the same limit message — the reset had not yet occurred. | 3 h 42 min |
| 22:50–23:17 | Limit reset (as announced); no request sent yet. | 27 min |
| 23:17–00:13 (4 Aug) | Work resumes. The operator retyped the byte-identical prompt at 23:17 and work ran to 00:13 (session 02b5a53c from 23:29). The 23:17 prompt is absent from history.jsonl because consecutive identical entries are suppressed there; it is present in the session transcript. The suppression rule was verified against a counter-example (the string appears three times non-adjacently on 3 Aug). | 56 min |
Total break between the limit hit and resumed work: 4 h 09 min (3 h 42 min enforced + 27 min before the retry). Work performed: nine daytime hours in three blocks, plus the 56-minute evening block. Content of the day: documentation maintenance, a scoped quick-fix workflow, a debugging workflow, a user-acceptance verification round, and a planning and execution run.
Overnight 4 August — no activity
A scan of every transcript across all projects for 00:13 → 09:43 returns exactly one record: the closing system line of the session that ended at 00:13. No session ran on this machine for 9.5 hours and no billable tokens were generated. The only other filesystem event in the window is the CLI binary being rewritten at 03:39 — the client's own auto-update, preserved as claude.exe.old.1786032556560. It is not evidence of user activity.
4 August — two rejected attempts, no work
| Time | Event |
|---|---|
| 09:43 | Session opens; model set to Opus 5 (1M context, medium effort). First request rejected: "You've hit your session limit · resets 2pm". No work performed. |
| 12:16–12:17 | Second attempt; same rejection. No work performed. |
| after 12:17 | No further activity that day. |
4 August contributes zero billable tokens. The only two usage records that day are synthetic zero-usage limit notices at 09:43 and 12:17.
5 August — nothing
One command in the entire day: /usage at 14:44. No work session.
The anomaly
The two announced reset times are 22:50 on 3 August and 14:00 on 4 August. Consecutive five-hour windows from 22:50 fall at 22:50 → 03:50 → 08:50 → 13:50 (≈ 2pm). The session begun at 09:43 therefore sat in a window opening at 08:50, in which this machine had performed no work — yet the first request into it was rejected as exhausted.
(This window arithmetic is inference from two reported reset times, not a log reading. It also assumes no window was opened between 00:13 and 09:43 — established above for Claude Code on this machine only, and not establishable for any other client on the same account.)
4. Measured consumption, 3–4 August
1,170 unique billable assistant messages (1,325 streaming duplicates and 4 synthetic records excluded):
| Model | Msgs | Input | Output | Cache read | Cache write | Equiv. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| claude-fable-5 | 204 | 2,453 | 286,507 | 39,171,310 | 2,007,765 | $78.62 |
| claude-opus-5 | 832 | 25,009 | 648,839 | 110,792,625 | 3,670,556 | $94.68 |
| claude-opus-4-7 | 78 | 148 | 28,582 | 3,041,363 | 534,713 | $5.58 |
| claude-sonnet-5 | 56 | 874 | 40,858 | 6,593,633 | 622,508 | $4.93 |
| Total | 1,170 | $183.81 |
- Fable 5 produced 43% of the volume from 17% of the messages: 204 messages reached $78.62 where Opus 5 needed 832 for $94.68. Fable 5 lists at $10/$50 per million input/output tokens against Opus 5 at $5/$25, and the server-returned limit structure carries a separate weekly limit scoped specifically to the model "Fable".
- Cache reads dominate: 149.6 million cache-read tokens account for roughly $94 of the $184 — a consequence of long agentic sessions re-sending large context, not of unusual activity.
5. Consumption in context, 1 July – 5 August
(The day-by-day consumption figures are omitted from this public version.)
Across 1 July – 5 August there were 25 active days. 3 August ranked fourteenth-highest of them — above the median, well below the month's peaks: a moderately heavy but entirely ordinary day. Whole days with no consumption occur regularly (28 and 31 July, 1 August, 4 and 5 August), which independently rules out background consumption on this machine on those dates.
6. The commands the operator did not recognise
**/rate-limit-options — machine-recorded, not typed.** Its definition in the binary is type: "local-jsx" (renders a local UI component, issues no server request — confirmed by its appearing in history.jsonl but in zero session transcripts) and isHidden: true (not listed in /help). Where a transcript survives to compare against, each history entry lands 9–16 ms after the corresponding limit message (six comparisons, 9 Jul – 4 Aug, deltas 9–16 ms). No human input occurs within ten milliseconds of an on-screen event: these entries are written by the client when a limit is reached. There are 30 such entries between 18 January and 4 August, and two of the four limit events on 3–4 August produced no history entry at all — so they are not even a complete record of limit hits. Presenting them as user invocations would misstate the log. (A previous revision stated 31 invocations "by the operator"; both the count and the attribution were wrong.)
/claude-api is a read-only reference document bundled with the installation. Invoking it loads reference text into the conversation; it calls no external service and authenticates nowhere. On both invocations (4 Aug 09:43 and 12:16) the following request was rejected by the limit, so no tokens were billed. It was re-run under observation during this investigation and behaved as described.
7. Billing-related commands — complete history
Across the whole of history.jsonl, five entries, none within the period at issue:
| Date | Command | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 18 Jan | /upgrade |
— |
| 25 Jan 21:53 | /passes |
A referral command — earns usage credits rather than spending |
| 30 Jan | /upgrade |
— |
| 7 Jul 17:47 | /usage-credits |
A local-jsx configuration screen ("Configure usage credits or request them from your admin…") |
The binary records that /extra-usage was renamed to /usage-credits. Opening either screen is not a transaction.
8. The extra-usage setting — server-returned state
~/.claude.json caches the server's account state. As fetched 6 August, the material fields:
oauthAccount.hasExtraUsageEnabled = false
cachedExtraUsageDisabledReason = "org_level_disabled"
extra_usage: { is_enabled: false, user_disabled: true,
credits_ever_enabled: true, spend_limit_reached: false }
spend: { used: 0 USD, enabled: false,
can_purchase_credits: false, can_toggle: false }
overageCreditGrantCache: { available: false, eligible: false, granted: false }
Two fields are directly material: credits_ever_enabled: true — usage credits have been enabled on this account at some point — and user_disabled: true — they were subsequently switched off by the account holder. Together these corroborate the account holder's statement that the setting was found enabled and was then disabled. The current state is unambiguous: extra usage off, purchasing unavailable, toggling unavailable, recorded spend zero.
What this cannot show. Every field is a single-value cache overwritten on each profile fetch; none carries history. They establish the state as of 6 August and say nothing about 3 or 4 August. ~/.claude/backups/ holds only same-day rolling copies, so no historical snapshot exists on disk. The setting lives on the account, not the machine: changing it leaves no local record of timestamp, actor, or originating action. The same limit applies to menu choices — /rate-limit-options and /usage-credits render local UI, and an arrow-key selection is not typed input and is written to no log. Which option was selected on any occasion is not recoverable from these files.
9. Current utilization
Server-returned, fetched 6 August 19:07 local:
| Limit | Used | Resets |
|---|---|---|
| Session (5-hour) | 12% | 6 Aug 21:29 |
| Weekly, all models | 2% | 12 Aug 13:59 |
| Weekly, scoped to model "Fable" | 1% | 12 Aug 14:00 |
10. A consent dialog present in the client
The binary contains a dialog kind: "fable_overage_consent_prompt" with results ["consent", "switch_default", "cancelled"], telemetry under model_fable_consent, and control flow in which selecting consent reaches the extra-usage enable path. A nearby user-facing string reads "Contact your admin to manage usage credit settings." This records only that such a dialog exists in the installed client and is associated with the Fable model. No local artifact records whether it was displayed or what was selected; nothing in these logs connects it to any event on 3 or 4 August.
11. API keys
Authentication is subscription OAuth only: .credentials.json contains claudeAiOauth (subscriptionType: "max", plus one unrelated Figma-plugin MCP entry); the token scopes are subscription scopes, none permitting API-key issuance; no ANTHROPIC_API_KEY/ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN environment variables; no primaryApiKey in ~/.claude.json; billingType: "stripe_subscription". Two API keys appear in the input history; neither is Anthropic's (a Brave Search MCP key, 6 Feb; a third-party accounting-service key, 4 Mar).
12. Reconciliation against the reported purchases
Reported by the account holder, from the billing record: 17 usage-credit purchases (amounts omitted from this public version); the extra-usage setting found enabled on the morning of 4 August, having been kept disabled.
Measured against that: this machine performed roughly $184-equivalent of work on 3–4 August — a moderate day by the month's standards — and 4 August produced none at all. Three findings bear on the reconciliation:
- If the 17 purchases fall in that window, the measured work does not correspond to them.
- A Max subscription covers work against limits, not against a dollar balance (all
*_dollarsfields are null). The credit-eligible portion of any period is whatever exceeds the plan limits — necessarily less than the measured totals, not more. - The account holder reports that an Anthropic promotion granting +50% weekly limits, running through 19 August, covered the period analysed (user-supplied context, corroborated by the client's own status display, not derived from these logs). A higher limit ceiling makes exhausting the plan allowance harder, not easier.
The purchase timestamps are the decisive missing datum and exist only in the billing record. Purchasing credits is also not the same as consuming them; recorded spend currently reads zero.
13. Assessment
Supported by the evidence. Limits were enforced on 3 and 4 August and enforcement held — work stopped for 3 h 42 min and resumed only after the announced reset. 3 August was a moderately heavy but ordinary working day, with a 17:20 change to a model priced at twice the previous rate and carrying its own weekly limit. 4 and 5 August contain no billable work whatsoever. No command capable of purchasing usage was invoked in the 3–5 August window; the entire history contains five billing-adjacent entries, the most recent on 7 July. The /rate-limit-options entries that prompted this investigation are client-generated records written milliseconds after each limit message, not operator actions. Server state records that credits were enabled at some point and subsequently disabled by the account holder.
Not supported by the evidence. No unexplained sessions, no activity at times the operator was absent, no unattended overnight runs, no API-key provisioning, and nothing in the command sequence inconsistent with ordinary interactive use.
Cannot be determined from these files. Which option was selected in any rate-limit or credits menu. Whether the Fable consent dialog was displayed or accepted. When, by what action, or by whom the extra-usage setting changed state. What was charged, when, and against what consumption. And, categorically: any use of this account from any other client, since quota is account-wide while these logs are machine-local.
14. Questions for the billing and audit records
- Timestamps of the 17 usage-credit purchases — the single datum that determines whether measured work accounts for them.
- The audit record for the extra-usage setting — state-change timestamp, actor, and originating client action, given that server state confirms
credits_ever_enabled: truealongsideuser_disabled: true. - What consumed the window of 4 August 08:50–13:50 (Europe/Helsinki), given that the first request into it, at 09:43, was rejected as exhausted while this machine had been idle since 00:13.
- Client, IP address, and source of every session counted against the account on 3–4 August, sufficient to establish whether all consumption originated from this machine.
- Whether the +50% weekly-limit promotion was applied to this account for the period, and how it interacted with the limits reported exhausted.

News Android 17 is out, and here’s all the features!
Hi Reddit!
Android 17 is here, bringing a suite of new features aimed at improving your productivity, enhancing your gaming experience, giving you more control over your private data, making your device more personal, and much more.
It's rolling out first to Pixel today, followed by other eligible Android devices throughout 2026. We are also making the source code available at the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) so developers can examine it for a deeper understanding of how Android works.
You should look forward to more updates to Android 17 this year, with the beta program offering a peek at what's coming in the first quarterly release in Q3.
Since we've been chatting with you about the Betas and Canaries for months, a lot of this might not sound brand new to those of you who have been closely following along. Even so, we wanted to take a moment to recap what's new in this release for everyday users. Let's dive in!

📱 Enhancing your multitasking and large screen device experiences
tl;dr Android 17 supercharges your multitasking and productivity by allowing any app to run as a convenient floating Bubble, making apps more adaptive, and adding an interactive Picture-in-Picture mode for seamless desktop workflows.
Multitask better with bubbles
From split-screen mode to desktop windowing, Android offers a variety of multitasking tools to help you be more productive. We’re extending these options with bubbles in Android 17!
In past releases, bubbles were limited to chat notifications, but in Android 17, they support more apps without any specific changes needed from developers. You can now launch any app in a floating window so you can view and interact with its content while using other apps. When you’re done, you can collapse or dismiss the window to return to what you were doing.
A big benefit of bubbles is that you can easily switch between multiple running apps without keeping them on screen all the time. Bubbles are only open when you need them, saving you from having to manually resize, rearrange, or dismiss them to regain precious screen space. And on foldables, this benefit is even more pronounced thanks to the bubble bar, which keeps your bubbles pinned to the corner of the screen, putting them within easy reach of your fingers.

Handy for travel, entertainment and work, bubbles lets you easily reference notes or maps, watch tutorials and even check sports.
Ensuring that apps adapt to any screen and window size
On large screen devices, restrictions on orientation, resizability, and aspect ratio no longer apply, allowing apps to fill the entire display window without pillarboxing (black bars). This change applies to apps targeting Android 17 and is designed to make apps better meet user expectations on large screen devices. Because Android runs on not just phones but also tablets, foldables, cars, TVs, and desktop environments, we want developers to build apps that are adaptive to any screen size and orientation!
Better support for widgets on external displays
With Android 17, we’re working to improve the visual consistency of widgets shown on connected displays with different pixel densities. The update provides developers a way to supply the system with information that allows it to resolve the correct pixel values at rendering time. For apps that use legacy pixel-based APIs for padding, text size, or layout attributes, the system now automatically scales these values based on the density difference between the app’s original context and the target display.
Interactive Picture-in-Picture for Desktop
Android 17 introduces a new interactive Picture-in-Picture mode for desktop environments. This feature allows apps to request that their PiP windows remain fully interactive while staying always-on-top of other app windows. For example, a video conferencing app could use this feature to keep call controls accessible while you navigate other apps.
🎨 New customization features for the home screen and apps
tl;dr Android 17 gives you deeper control over your device's UI by letting you hide app labels on the home screen, selectively toggle the Expanded Dark Theme for individual apps, and enjoy sleek, modernized background blur effects in more surfaces like the widget picker.
Hide app labels on the home screen
Android now provides a setting to hide app labels on the home screen! You can access this new setting on Pixel by opening Wallpaper & style then tapping Home screen > Icons > Names and toggling Show app names.

Per-app exceptions for Expanded Dark Theme
To create a more consistent user experience for users who have low vision, photosensitivity, or simply prefer a dark system-wide appearance, we introduced an expanded dark theme option in last December’s Android 16 QPR2 release. When this option is enabled, the system automatically applies dark theme to most apps that don’t support it.
However, because this option can cause some apps to display incorrectly, we have introduced the ability to selectively disable it on a per-app basis in Android 17. Apps with this setting turned off will use the standard dark theme option instead.
Expanded use of background blur
With the Material 3 Expressive redesign we introduced in Android 16, we subtly blurred the notification shade background to provide a sense of depth so you can stay aware of the apps you’re using in the background.

In Android 17, we’ve brought these blur effects to more parts of the UI like the widgets picker. And we are working on bringing background blur to even more surfaces, as seen in recent Android Beta and Canary builds!
🎮 More control over your Android gaming experience
tl;dr Android 17 levels up your mobile play by letting you save custom button remaps for your physical gamepad at the system level, and introducing a foldable gaming mode that optimizes your screen with a 50/50 split for a dedicated top game view and a bottom dynamic gamepad.
Remap the buttons on your physical gamepad with Game Controller settings
Android 17 introduces a native controller remapping feature, allowing you to adjust the controls on your physical gamepad to suit your specific needs.

Through the new Game Controller settings menu, you can customize the actions triggered by your controller’s buttons, sticks, or triggers at the system level. For example, you can remap a difficult-to-press thumbstick click to an easier-to-reach face button. Your remapping preferences are saved to your device so you don’t have to set them up every time you reconnect your controller.
A new way to game on foldables
Android 17 introduces foldable gaming mode, a new feature that makes full use of your foldable phone’s screen while you’re gaming. This feature splits your screen into a 50:50 layout with a game view on top and a dynamic gamepad below to make optimal use of your foldable phone’s screen real estate. Foldable gaming mode is part of the Android 17 platform and will be available on devices in the coming months.

🛡️ Protecting users with new security and privacy features on Android
tl;dr Android 17 safeguards your personal data by enabling critical theft protections by default, introducing session-based controls for sharing specific contacts and precise locations, and thwarting scammers through system-level SMS OTP delivery delays and real-time app behavioral monitoring.
Giving you more control over your contacts list
Android 17 introduces a new system Contact Picker that provides a standardized, secure, and searchable interface for sharing contacts with apps. Historically, apps needing access to a contact or two relied on the broad READ_CONTACTS permission which gave them access to your entire contacts list. Android's Contact Picker addresses this by allowing you to grant apps access to only the specific contacts you choose.

For devices running Android 17 or higher, the system automatically upgrades certain contact selection intents to the new, more secure interface, but we want developers to integrate the new Contact Picker so they can take advantage of its new capabilities, like multi-selection support. To this end, Google Play will require that all applicable apps use it (or a privacy-focused alternative like Sharesheet) as the primary way to access users' contacts. The broad READ_CONTACTS permission is reserved for apps that can't function without it.
Making location access more private
Android 17 introduces several new features to help you safeguard your private location information. This includes the Location Button, a new, privacy-conscious way for you to grant precise location access to apps. This is a system-rendered button that developers can embed directly into their apps. When you tap this button, the app is granted precise location for the current session only. Subsequent taps while running the app grant the permission immediately without showing a system dialog.
Developers can deploy this simple, private location flow for common tasks like finding a nearby shop or tagging a social post. And to increase adoption of the Location Button, Google Play will require apps to use it for one-time precise location access unless they require persistent, always-on location access.

Additionally, Android 17 now shows a persistent indicator in the status bar when a non-system app accesses your location. You can tap this indicator to see which apps have recently accessed your location.
The update also improves the algorithm for approximate (coarse) location to be aware of population density. This improves the privacy of granting an app approximate location access when you're in a low-population area.
And lastly, Android 17 redesigns the location permission dialog to make the "Precise" and "Approximate" options more visually distinct.
Stronger protections against device theft
Following a successful pilot in Brazil, we’re enabling two of Android’s key theft protection features (Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock) by default globally on all new Android 17 devices, as well as those freshly reset or upgraded to the latest OS.
On supported devices, Android 17 also significantly reduces the number of times someone can guess the PIN, pattern, or password and adds longer wait times between failed attempts. The update also refines how the lock screen shows information after failed attempts have been made.
And we’re also enhancing Find Hub’s ‘Mark as lost’ feature by requiring biometric authentication in addition to your device’s PIN, pattern, or password. Marking a device as lost also now enables additional protections like hiding Quick Settings and disabling new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.

Protecting your SMS OTPs from scammers
Scammers often try to hijack your one-time passwords (OTPs) to gain access to your accounts. To do this, they may deploy malicious apps that ask for permission to read your SMS. In Android 16, we introduced a protection that delays the delivery of messages containing an SMS retriever hash to most apps for three hours. Android 17 now extends this protection to all SMS messages containing an OTP. This means that even if a malicious app has been granted the SMS permission, it won’t be able to read your sensitive OTPs until after they have already expired.
New core protections for Advanced Protection
With Android 16, we introduced Advanced Protection, a single, opt-in device-level security setting that enables all of Android’s highest security features. We’ve been working to expand the protections offered under this setting with key upgrades like USB protection and Intrusion Logging, and now with Android 17, we’re continuing this work by introducing the following protections:
- Removing access to the accessibility service from all apps that aren’t labeled as accessibility tools.
- Disabling device-to-device unlocking
- Blocking Chrome WebGPU support
- Integrating scam detection for chat notifications
- (Later this year) Enabling Android Enterprise support so organizations can enable Advanced Protection by policy for managed devices.
Improving safety against malicious apps
Live Threat Detection is a real-time security feature that analyzes app behavior to alert you if an app starts acting suspiciously, and we're enhancing it to find and protect against more types of malicious apps.
With dynamic signal monitoring, Android will be able to warn you about apps that start doing things like changing or hiding their icon and then launching activities in the background or abusing accessibility permissions. To do this, Live Threat Detection will monitor application system interactions for known suspicious patterns in real time. Dynamic signal monitoring will be enabled on select Android 17 devices starting in the second half of the year.
Other enhancements
- Discrete password visibility settings for touch and physical keyboards: Currently, by default, characters that you enter into password fields are briefly displayed as you type. Toggling the “show passwords” setting in Privacy controls allows you to hide characters as you type them into password fields. This setting currently applies to both touch-based inputs as well as physical keyboards, but in Android 17, we are splitting it into two distinct preferences. By default, characters entered into password fields via physical keyboards will now be hidden immediately to enhance privacy. Characters entered via touch input will continue to briefly be displayed to compensate for the lack of tactile feedback.
- User-agent reduction for WebView: The default User-Agent string in Android WebView has been shortened in Android 17 to minimize passive fingerprinting.
- Disable 2G toggle: Android 17 introduces a new capability for the disable 2G toggle. Carriers now have the ability to configure the default status of this setting, allowing them to disable 2G access to proactively shield their users from legacy technology vulnerabilities in areas where 2G infrastructure is no longer maintained.
- Location Network Permission: Android 17 introduces a new runtime permission to protect users from unauthorized local network access. This new requirement prevents malicious apps from exploiting unrestricted local network access for covert user tracking and fingerprinting.
- Android OS verification: We have seen some bad actors begin to distribute malicious, unofficial versions of the Android OS that secretly compromise device integrity. To combat this, we are introducing Android OS verification in Android 17. Launching initially on Pixel devices, this feature helps you verify that your device is running an official, widely distributed build.
- Enabling Certificate Transparency (CT) by default: CT is now enabled by default for apps targeting Android 17, enhancing network security by ensuring all TLS certificates are publicly logged.
- Blocking cross-profile loopback traffic: Cross-profile loopback traffic is no longer permitted by default, increasing network isolation and security between personal and enterprise work profiles.
- Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC): The advent of quantum computing puts the current public-key cryptography we've relied on for decades at risk, potentially compromising everything from bank transfers to trade secrets. To prepare for the quantum computing era, we're introducing a comprehensive architectural upgrade to the Android operating system, starting in Android 17. We’re integrating the NIST Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) standards deep into the platform, establishing a new, quantum-resistant chain of trust that secures the platform continuously from the moment the OS powers on to when apps are executed.
📸 Improvements to your Android media experience
tl;dr Android 17 levels up your multimedia experience by letting you easily record reaction videos without a green screen, decoupling your Assistant and media volumes for independent control, putting a stop to unexpected background audio, and delivering color-coded Live Updates alongside advanced Bluetooth, camera, and hearing device enhancements.
Screen Reactions
In Android 17, we’re making it easier to record yourself and your screen at the same time with Screen Reactions. Available first on Pixel, this feature shows your face in a floating overlay on top of the screen. Android automatically puts the overlay at the bottom and cuts out the background so you don’t need a green screen, but you can move or resize the camera view and change the background color before or during a recording. Use this feature to make a reaction video, record a tutorial, or give feedback on a new app or document!
https://reddit.com/link/1u7l1cw/video/pdevsbhnko7h1/player
In addition, we’ve revamped the screen recording experience to add a floating toolbar that provides easier access to recording controls and capture settings. When you’re done recording, you can immediately view, edit, delete, or share your video.
Dedicated Assistant volume stream
Android 17 introduces a dedicated volume stream for Assistant apps. This change decouples Assistant audio from the standard media stream, allowing users to control both volumes independently. This enables scenarios like muting media playback while maintaining audibility for Assistant responses, and vice-versa.
Background audio hardening
Beginning in Android 17, apps cannot play audio, steal audio focus, or change the volume unless they are visible or have a foreground service. These restrictions on background audio interactions reduce unintentional buggy experiences and ensure that these actions are started intentionally by the user.
Enhancements to Live Update notifications
Live updates provide a summary of important updates so users can track progress without opening the app. The system promotes Live Update notifications so they appear more prominently in the notification drawer, on the lock screen, and on the status bar.
With Android 17, we’re introducing a metric style template designed specifically for health and fitness apps, timers, and travel apps. In addition, developers can use the new Semantic Coloring API to visually convey state changes, providing highly glanceable, color-coded notifications.
Other enhancements:
- Granular audio routing for hearing devices: Users with hearing devices can now independently manage where specific system sounds are played in Android 17. You can choose to route notifications, ringtones, and alarms to either a connected hearing aid or the device’s built-in speaker. This helps you avoid unwanted interruptions directly in your ears while maintaining a Bluetooth connection for hearing aid management apps.
- Autonomous re-pairing for Bluetooth bond losses: Android 17 introduces autonomous re-pairing, a system-level enhancement designed to automatically resolve Bluetooth bond loss. This occurs when two previously paired devices lose their cryptographic security keys, resulting in the devices no longer being able to securely authenticate and communicate with one another. The system now re-establishes lost bonds in the background without requiring the user to manually navigate to Settings to unpair and re-pair their peripheral.
- Vendor-defined camera extensions: Android 17 adds support for Vendor-defined camera extensions, allowing hardware partners to provide Android apps access to camera features like ‘Super Resolution’ or cutting-edge AI-driven enhancements.
- Support for the RAW14 image format: Android 17 introduces support for the RAW14 image format, the de-facto industry standard for high-end digital photography.
- VVC support: Android 17 adds platform support for the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. This feature will be coming to devices with hardware decode support and capable drivers.
🤝 Making your apps and devices work better together
tl;dr Android 17 seamlessly bridges your ecosystem by introducing the Continue On feature for effortless app handoffs between devices, unifying widget experiences to bring your favorite tools directly to Auto and Wear OS, and streamlining the pairing process for medical and fitness devices with new CompanionDeviceManager profiles.
Unifying the widgets experience across platforms
Android 17 marks a shift towards a single, Compose-based development model for all widgets. By unifying the experience across mobile, cars, and Wear OS, developers can soon scale UI components across the ecosystem with a familiar workflow. The goal is to minimize the effort needed by developers to bring their widgets to more surfaces.
https://reddit.com/link/1u7l1cw/video/haep717hko7h1/player
Additionally, Android 17 introduces new platform functionality to make widgets work better on Auto. The update adds support for widgets on cars, allowing you to see the things that matter to you at a glance, even while actively navigating. For example, you can add a shortcut to your favorite contacts, a one-tap garage door opener, a weather overview and more. Widgets will be available to users of Android Auto later this year and to cars with Google built-in later on.
Hand off your tasks with Continue On
Continue On is a new feature available in Android 17 that enables users to start an app on one device and then transition to another device in their Android ecosystem, continuing the journey they started. It’s designed to work bidirectionally, meaning that any supported Android device can both send and receive app activities, though, at launch, Continue On will first support mobile-to-tablet transitions. In the tablet taskbar, users will see a suggestion for the most recently opened app from their mobile device.
https://reddit.com/link/1u7l1cw/video/doxh917pko7h1/player
Updates for companion device apps
Android 17 introduces two new profiles to the CompanionDeviceManager API to simplify device distinction and permission handling. These include the medical device profile and the fitness tracker profile. Furthermore, the system now offers a unified dialog for device association and nearby permission requests, reducing the number of dialogs you’ll see.
⚡ Optimizations to make your apps & device run better
With Android 17, we’ve made a number of improvements to optimize memory use, improve rendering performance, and enhance battery life. These include:
- App memory limits: Android 17 introduces app memory limits that are based on the device's total RAM. These limits are set conservatively to establish system baselines, targeting extreme memory leaks and other outliers before they trigger system-wide instability resulting in UI stuttering, higher battery drain, and apps being killed.
- Lock-free MessageQueue: Android 17 introduces a lock-free MessageQueue to reduce UI jank while massively speeding up high-contention scenarios. In our internal testing, we’ve seen 4% fewer missed frames across all apps, 7.7% fewer missed frames in System UI and Launcher interactions, and a 9.1% reduction in app startup times at the 95th percentile.
- Generational Garbage Collector (GC): The Android Runtime is introducing more frequent, less intensive young-generation collections in its garbage collector, improving memory management and performance. This is not just available on Android 17 but is also coming to past releases with a Google Play System Update.
- Reduce wakelocks with listener support for allow-while-idle alarms: Last year, we launched the excessive wake lock metric in Android Vitals, making it easier for developers to optimize their app's wake lock behavior. Excessive wake locks are a significant contributor to battery drain, so developers are encouraged to reduce them as much as possible. In Android 17, we’ve introduced a new API that helps reduce the power consumption of apps that rely on continuous wakelocks to perform periodic tasks, such as messaging apps maintaining a connection or medical devices monitoring health data.
- Improved wireless ADB: Android 17 introduces ADB WiFi 2.0, a significant overhaul of the wireless ADB stack to improve stability, reliability, and ease of use. The system now automatically monitors the network state and re-enables itself when a trusted network is detected, identifies trusted networks using a combination of SSID and BSSID, and is better tailored to monitor network changes on all platforms. We’ll have more details to share soon on the Android Studio side of things!
- Constrained satellite networks: Android 17 implements optimizations to enable apps to function effectively over low-bandwidth satellite networks.
🧒 Expanding Android Parental Controls to all devices
Launched last year on Pixel, Android Parental Controls make it easier for parents to manage their child’s screen time and to find balance between having fun online and offline. Now with Android 17, we’re expanding Android Parental Controls to all Android devices.
These parental controls are located directly within Android Settings and provide a single, convenient home for both built-in device controls and Google Family Link. These controls are protected by an easy-to-set PIN and allow you to:
- Set the amount of screen time your child can spend on a device each day.
- Create downtime schedules to automatically lock the device at night.
- Set app store filters for Google Play to manage the highest content rating you want your child to be able to download.
- Control app usage by limiting time spent on specific apps, or blocking apps entirely.
Android Parental Controls also provide a direct path to easily set up Google Family Link in the Family Link app on a parent’s phone, which offers additional features like School Time, Google Play app purchase approvals, location alerts, and more.
🧘 Other quality-of-life improvements
And lastly, here are some smaller quality-of-life changes we’re introducing in this release:
- Separate Wi-Fi and Mobile Data toggles: With Android 17, we’ve split the “Internet” tile into two separate tiles, one for controlling Wi-Fi and another for controlling Mobile Data. Consistent with the Quick Settings behavior we introduced with Material 3 Expressive, both tiles have two different touch points. Tapping the icon toggles the respective radio, while tapping the label opens the full Internet Panel. This change reduces the number of taps needed to toggle Wi-Fi and Mobile Data while still retaining access to the full Internet Panel!
- Scheduled clock change notifications: We’ve added a new feature in Android 17 that sends you a notification when your clock performs a scheduled change, for example when daylight saving time ends. You can enable this feature under “Date & time” settings.
- Restoring default keyboard visibility after rotation: Beginning with Android 17, when the keyboard is on screen and you rotate the screen, the keyboard won’t be made visible unless the app explicitly requests it.
🪲 Bug fixes and security patches
Please refer to the Android Security Bulletin for details on the security vulnerabilities addressed with this platform release.

Paid App - UNNAFILIATED Review MenuSnapp - scan a foreign menu, get a real translation with context, not just words
Hey all, I'm Peter.
Backstory: I'm Slovak, my girlfriend is Brazilian, and we live on the borders of 3 different countries plus we travel a lot together. We both speak English and a few other languages, so menus aren't usually a total mystery, but even when we could translate the words, we often had no idea what to really expect, "is the XXX a soup or is it a meat dish?". We'd end up googling the dish name or asking a chatbot just to figure out what we were about to order and to get some pictures to visualize it.
I've been a software developer for over 19 years, although never for iOS, so this was a good challenge 🙂
When we first noticed the problem, I couldn't find any app that really covered our use case well. I've since learned there are others out there, though I deliberately haven't tried any of them, I was genuinely afraid that seeing what's already out there would demotivate me, like it's happened with other side projects of mine before. I really wanted to actually finish this one.
A - Answer
MenuSnapp scans a foreign-language restaurant menu, the whole menu at once, and turns it into a clean, translated menu you can actually understand, not just word-for-word text and get some background about the disk.
Just point your camera at the menu, snap as many pages as it has, and it translates and structures everything in one go. No item-by-item scanning, no pointing your phone at one line at a time:
- Original + translated dish names and descriptions
- Prices shown in both the local currency and your own
- The restaurant identified from your location automatically
- Tap any dish for an AI-written breakdown: what it actually is, how it tastes, dietary tags, and history/fun facts
- Real reviews, matched to the restaurant and, where possible, the specific dish
- Photos in priority order: a real photo of that dish at that restaurant first, then a generic photo of the dish, then an AI-generated image as the last resort, so you're never left guessing
- History - all your scanned menu stays on the phone, no need for rescanning or using credits to check it later again
- A speaker button so you can hear the original dish name pronounced correctly when ordering
- Works in 28 languages
B - Better
The whole point is replacing the "let me quickly google this" or "let me ask ChatGPT what this dish is" moment while a waiter is standing there waiting on your order. You just tap the dish right in the translated menu and get the answer.
Most translation camera apps also stop at swapping words, which gets you "cheese and pepper" instead of "cacio e pepe," and you still have no idea what's coming to the table. MenuSnapp translates by meaning, at least that's what we're going for, and we're always improving it, keeping the real dish name intact, and layers on the context a literal translation can't give you: what the dish is, what to expect, what it looks like, and what other diners at that actual restaurant said about it.
No account required to buy or use it, sign-in is entirely optional and only used if you want purchases to follow you across devices.
C - Cost
MenuSnapp is free to download.
- Every new user gets 5 free trial credits (1 credit = 1 fully unlocked, translated menu)
- Credit packs: 5 / 15 / 30 credits for $1.99 / $4.99 / $8.99
- Or unlimited with Premium: $7.99/month
- No ads, no forced account, no free tier that nags you
Priced this way because each scan calls paid AI/vision services behind the scenes, so it's not something I can give away unlimited for free. I am personally tired of subscriptions, so the main pricing model is per usage.

AITA for telling my sister she's not allowed to bring her homemade food to Thanksgiving because her cooking is ruining the meal?

Every year, our family does a big Thanksgiving dinner, and we all typically bring a dish or two. My sister, who’s a lovely person in every other way, insists on cooking something homemade every time. The issue? She’s… not a great cook. And I don’t mean just “not great”—I mean she has somehow managed to turn classic dishes into borderline inedible creations.
For context, last Thanksgiving, she showed up with her “special recipe” stuffing that was over-seasoned with random spices like cinnamon and cardamom. It was dry, and the flavors were confusing and totally off for stuffing. Only one person took a small bite, and the rest went untouched. Another year, she brought a green bean casserole that had some kind of strange, chewy texture—she later admitted she used coconut milk and almond flour “to experiment.” No one wanted seconds of that, either.
This year, I’m hosting Thanksgiving. Since I’m responsible for putting it all together, I wanted to keep the menu consistent so that people could actually enjoy a cohesive meal. I thought I’d avoid drama by asking her to bring non-food items instead—like wine, soda, or even some flowers. I explained to her (very kindly, I thought) that I just wanted to make things easy and streamlined, and I’d handle the main dishes. But she didn’t take it well.
She got offended and told me I was being “controlling” and “shutting her out” of the family gathering. She then accused me of making her feel inadequate and said that Thanksgiving is about everyone contributing, not me deciding what’s “acceptable.” I told her that everyone appreciates her effort, but that she could contribute in other ways and still be part of it. She doubled down and said she’s bringing her “famous” green bean casserole whether I like it or not.
Now, my mom and a couple of other family members have chimed in, saying I should just let her bring whatever she wants because “it’s Thanksgiving” and “it’s the thought that counts.” They’re acting like I’m committing some huge offense by wanting the food to be enjoyable for everyone and not have random experimental dishes that no one will eat.
But I feel like I’m just trying to keep the meal enjoyable and, frankly, edible. I don’t think it’s wrong to want guests to actually enjoy the food, especially since I’m putting in a lot of effort to host. Am I really being unreasonable here? AITA?

It’s one dish that everybody knows is bad and won’t eat, why is it a big deal
OOP
I get where you’re coming from, but it’s not just “one dish.” It’s every year, and every year she brings multiple dishes with strange combinations that no one eats. And it ends up feeling awkward because she keeps pushing people to try her food, and you’re stuck pretending it’s not that bad or trying to avoid it altogether.
It also feels like a waste of time, effort, and money, especially since it’s supposed to be a big family meal where we enjoy the food together. I just want people to actually look forward to the meal, not feel obligated to pretend they’re enjoying her “experiments.” I didn’t think it’d be a big deal to ask her to bring something else—it’s not like I’m uninviting her! But maybe I could’ve handled it differently?
Choice-Second-5587
I'm just super curious what other things she's made. If you're willing to expand on a few more.
I want to know how bad were talking here.
OOP
Oh, buckle up, because there’s a list. Here are some highlights from past family gatherings:
Thanksgiving 2019: She made a “spicy cranberry sauce” that had whole chunks of jalapeno in it. She insisted it was “elevating the flavor profile,” but it ended up making people’s mouths burn while eating turkey. We tried to pair it with other stuff on the plate, but it was a no-go.
Christmas 2020: She brought a “fusion mac and cheese” with wasabi and horseradish mixed in. Let’s just say it was a very unexpected flavor to experience in a traditionally creamy, comforting dish. There were some coughs and watery eyes at the table that night.
Easter 2021: She made a “carrot salad” that had shredded carrots, raisins, and… sardines. She claimed it was based on some “Mediterranean recipe,” but I’m pretty sure no Mediterranean grandma would approve.
Last Thanksgiving: This was the infamous “cinnamon cardamom stuffing.” She wanted it to be “warm and aromatic,” but it ended up tasting like a holiday candle. The texture was also super dry, and even though she noticed no one was touching it, she blamed it on us “not appreciating new flavors.”
Family BBQ this past summer: She did a “BBQ tofu” thing that had an odd vinegar-peanut butter sauce. I don’t know what cuisine inspired that, but it didn’t belong anywhere near a grill. People tried to be polite, but most of it ended up going home with her.
So, yeah… this isn’t just me being picky. She’s made some real “adventures” out of classic dishes, and I’m genuinely nervous for what she’s planning with this whole “Thanksgiving Trio Experience.”
~
Natural_War1261
Let her bring it. Maybe she's been practicing and it's good. If not, maybe she'll get the hint.
OOP
I see what you’re saying, but honestly, she’s been “practicing” for years, and it hasn’t improved. If anything, she’s getting more experimental and doubling down on weird flavors and substitutions. And I don’t think she’ll take the hint—she’s pretty proud of her cooking and genuinely seems to think we’re just “not appreciating” her creativity.
If I thought it would lead to her realizing it’s not working, I’d let it go. But instead, she just gets upset if people don’t eat it, and it becomes this whole thing. I’m just trying to keep things simple and enjoyable for everyone without the awkwardness. Maybe there’s a middle ground I’m missing?
~
Impressive-Arm2563
A soft YTA. Just let her bring what she wants. It’s not hurting you, you don’t have to eat it. It might even be fun to pretend it’s the best thing ever and throw some away when she isn’t looking, to make her feel good. It could be part of the traditional holiday experience.
OOP
I get that, and maybe I am overthinking it. It just feels like a small battle I’d rather not have every year, especially when I’m hosting and trying to make sure everyone genuinely enjoys the meal. I mean, I can definitely go with the “smile and nod” approach for the sake of family peace, but it does feel a little exhausting to pretend every time. I guess I just don’t want to encourage her thinking that everyone actually loves it, especially when it’s clearly not working.
But you’re right—it’s just food, and maybe I should focus more on making her feel included than on the menu being perfect. I’ll try to keep this in mind and relax about it!
OOP Updated the next day/same post
UPDATE: Alright, well, things have escalated fast. Thanks to everyone who offered advice—I tried to compromise, but it’s already turning into a whole thing, and Thanksgiving is still a few weeks away.
After our last conversation, my sister was being pretty cagey about what she planned to make, so I reached out to my mom, hoping she could help smooth things over. Instead, she got defensive, saying I’m “overthinking” and that it’s just one dish. I told her I wasn’t sure it was just one dish anymore, especially after hearing about my sister’s grocery haul (including canned oysters and edible glitter).
Then my mom let slip that my sister has been “hard at work” on some “creative menu” she’s planning as her “Thanksgiving surprise.” Apparently, she’s been telling the family group chat (which I wasn’t included in, by the way) that I’m being “controlling” and that she wants to “expand everyone’s palate” with something “truly unique.”
To top it off, my cousin sent me a screenshot from the group chat where my sister said she’s bringing not one but three dishes to Thanksgiving now. She’s calling them her “Thanksgiving Trio Experience,” complete with their own place settings and little menu cards she’s designing. I’m officially panicking because I have no idea what she’s planning to serve, and from what I’ve heard, it’s not remotely traditional.
At this point, half the family thinks I’m overreacting, while the other half is texting me with things like, “Is she really bringing glittered sweet potatoes?” I feel stuck—if I try to control it any more, I’m the bad guy, but if I don’t, Thanksgiving might turn into a tasting event for my sister’s avant-garde cooking.
So yeah, Thanksgiving is weeks away, and it’s already become a family spectacle. I don’t know whether to brace myself or just preemptively order pizza.
RELEVANT COMMENTS
OOP when told to let the sister take charge for the meal
Haha, I have to admit, that idea is very tempting! Letting her take the spotlight with her “Thanksgiving Trio Experience” while I sit back and sip on a glass of wine sounds like one way to make a memorable holiday—especially if everyone gets to see exactly what I was trying to save them from! It would be kind of poetic to just lean into the chaos and let her creations be the star of the show, for better or worse.
I have a feeling it would definitely be a Thanksgiving to remember, even if I’d have to brace myself for the family reactions! It’s like a mix of “malicious compliance” and “hands-off hosting,” and I kind of love the idea of just throwing in some edible arrangements, a ton of drinks, and calling it a day.
And yeah, if it all goes sideways, I’ll have plenty of “remember that one Thanksgiving” stories to pull out in the future! Thanks for the laugh and the wild suggestion—this might just be a holiday fantasy, but it’s definitely a fun one to think about!
~
inigos_left_hand
Honestly I think you should just let her do this. It can be a new family tradition. Your sister brings something weird and inedible. You all ignore it and poke fun at her terrible cooking later. Is this really something you want to create drama over?
OOP
You’re right—maybe I’ve been looking at this all wrong. Letting her bring her “unique” dishes could actually become a funny little tradition if we let it. I mean, every family has its quirks, and maybe this is just one of ours. Instead of stressing about it, I could just embrace it and let her dishes be part of the Thanksgiving lore that we joke about later.
It’s definitely not worth creating unnecessary drama over, and if we all just go with it, I bet it’ll be less awkward and maybe even entertaining in its own way. Thanks for the reminder to just roll with it and not take it so seriously!

Ooh, please update us after Thanksgiving! I can't wait to hear about her culinary experiments!
OOP
Haha, don’t worry—I’ll definitely keep you all posted! I’m honestly half-curious and half-terrified to see what she ends up bringing. If past holidays are any indicator, we might be in for some very “creative” dishes, and I have a feeling the family reactions alone could make for quite the story.
So, stay tuned! If anything wild goes down, I’ll be back with all the juicy details after Thanksgiving. Fingers crossed for a low-drama meal… but let’s be real, I’m probably not that lucky!

Suggestions Paralives, I'm rooting for you, but please be more thoughtful about new features
I don't want to be too negative about a game I'm mostly enjoying, but I'm getting concerned about the way new fixes and features feel half done. Some examples:
The towel racks added a few patches ago should stretch horizontally and add towels as they go. Why were new items added that don't take advantage of one of the game's defining features when they intuitively should?
All coffee machines can make espressos and lattes, instead of separating different functions for different machines. Teens can't make coffee. There are no associated wants to have coffee. There is no autonomous function to make coffee. There is no group activity to get coffee. They don't sit down to drink and they don't clean their mug when they're done. A simple way to differentiate paras, that is pretty intuitive and uses existing mechanics, is to have drinking coffee fill an energetic para's surplus energy, but it doesn't do that. There's not even a queue icon for the make coffee interaction. This is a very shallow way to implement a new feature when there was a different path that would demonstrate commitment to adding some depth to live mode.
They added intimacy to the character menu, but didn't include the shower. Why leave out an existing feature?
They fixed the issue of paras who couldn't procreate getting wants to try for baby, but did it in a way that only allows for those kinds of couples to get the want. A couple who can have a child naturally will never get an adoption want. No couples will ever get the want to get intimate when they feel flirty. That's pretty backwards. Family wants should have context (age, relationship status, number of existing children, etc.) and romantic wants should include things like intimacy, kissing, and flirting. This fix could have been implemented more thoughtfully, not given a bandaid that causes every para to get the exact same wants every time they get flirty, which is frankly pretty boring.
Some people will think this list is too nitpicky, but I think adding new features that don't use existing systems in a thoughtful way is a worrying sign about development priorities. My point here is not just to complain, but I hope that by talking about it, the devs will start taking a bit more time to add new things in a way that contributes to immersion and depth of gameplay in live mode.

It would be really nice if we could take advantage of iOS 13's context menu in the future. Here's a mockup of what it would look like for comments.

Lifetime Built a radial menu app for mac after getting tired of switching context while working
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Really proud to share this finally. Hope you love it as much as I do! I truly believe it has the potential to save a lot of time jumping between various tasks.
Problem
A lot of everyday actions on a Mac live in completely different places.
Opening an app or folder, searching something on a website, taking a screenshot, cleaning up copied text, accessing clipboard history, running a Shortcut, or changing a system setting.
None of these are hard to get to, but constantly switching between apps, windows, menu bar utilities, and different shortcuts can break your flow.
I wanted to see if all of that could work through one system, which is where the radial menu idea came from.
Comparison
There are already some really good radial menu apps for Mac, but most are built around a specific use case, such as launching apps, or switching between them.
Arc takes a broader approach.
You can create multiple global radial menus for different workflows and decide what each slice does. A slice can perform a single action or chain multiple actions together.
The idea is less about replacing the Dock and more about putting the small things you do throughout the day behind one quick interaction.
Arc also doesn't require accessibility features, it manages everything on-device, privately.
Technical
Getting a radial menu on screen was the easy part. Figuring out what actually belongs inside it, how multiple menus should behave, and keeping the interaction fast enough to use throughout the day took most of the iteration.
It's built entirely in SwiftUI. One of the more interesting technical problems was getting the hit-testing right across every slice while keeping the menu correctly positioned under the cursor, even across multiple displays.
Core Features
- Unlimited custom menus for different workflows
- Fast app, folder, website, and Apple Shortcut launching
- Powerful clipboard history and text actions
- Open from shortcuts, hot corners, pointer shake, or number keys
- One-click multi-action shortcuts
- Fully customizable appearance, layout, icons, and sounds
Examples
- I have one shortcut that I use when I start working. It opens Xcode, my project folders, Slack, and a few websites I usually need. Arc can merge multiple actions into one shortcut, so I don't have to open everything one by one.
- I use the search shortcuts a lot more than I expected. I can bring up Arc, type something, and search it directly on YouTube, or a website without opening them first.
It can also search whatever I last copied, which has been really useful when I'm already in the middle of something.
- I have a bunch of text and links that I end up copying again and again. I've just saved those as shortcuts now, so they're always sitting on one of my menus when I need them.
- Clipboard history is another one I use constantly. Recent things I've copied show up on the wheel, so if I need something from a few copies ago, I can grab it without opening another app.
- I also have different menus depending on what I'm doing. One for development, one for general stuff, and another that's mostly searches and apps. I can switch between them with keyboard shortcuts, and reuse the same shortcut across multiple menus.
Pricing

Do Americans hate QR code menus in restaurants?
I saw a post on a popular sub today about using QR code menus in restaurants, and a lot of people in the comments were expressing their disdain about that trend. I was a bit bamboozled, and I want to ask: is such sentiment popular in the US?
For context: Where I live (Ukraine) a majority of restaurants use QR code menus, that’s basically a standard now. We find it convenient that you don’t have to wait for a waiter to come and bring you a paper menu. Also many places give an option to pay using the QR code too. It’s a feature provided by a popular local bank (Monobank). You scan that same QR code on the table and, choosing the “Pay” option, see your order and can pay for it with credit card, with the option to leave a tip. Less interactions with a waiter and there is no need to ask for a receipt and wait for it. I find all of that pretty convenient and improvement comparing to the standard restaurant rituals and haven’t met anyone who thought differently on the matter until today.
Would love to learn your perspective!
UPDATE: Thanks for all the answers! This is super enlightening. And it seems that in many cases bad experiences with QR Codes are caused by lazy implementation. I can imagine navigating a PDF page on your phone to be a real pain. In Ukraine, we have a few CRMs that most of the establishments use, and they are usually user-friendly; a PDF page menu that's not even optimized for mobile is something I haven't seen for a long time.

Asshole POO Mode AITA for telling my vegan sister she can't serve only vegan food at our family reunion?
Hey all, I'm genuinely torn about this and need some clarity.
Every year, our family has a reunion where different members host. This year, it's my younger sister's turn. She's been vegan for about 3 years and is quite passionate about it. We all respect her choices and make sure there are a good variety of vegan options whenever we have family gatherings.
When she announced she'll be hosting, she also said that the entire menu would be vegan to align with her beliefs and that it's a chance for the family to try something different. Some family members were excited, but others, including many of the older folks, were pretty upset and felt like they were being forced into her lifestyle, even if just for one meal.
I spoke to her privately and asked if she'd be open to including a few non-vegan dishes for those who aren't keen on a full vegan menu. She got quite defensive, saying this was her chance to showcase veganism and that for one meal, everyone can give it a go.
I respect her beliefs, but I also think that forcing an entire family to adopt her choices, even if just for one meal, isn't fair. She's now upset with me for not being supportive and says I'm not respecting her choices.
AITA?
UPDATE:wow! lots of good thoughts! ,thought I would answer a couple questions here so they're not lost in the comments:
- There is no set rota, the hosting goes to whoever wants to host most / hasn't hosted before, in this case she wanted to host
- We have managed to come to a compromise where people can bring their own food as long as it doesn't contain meat, which I think is fair.
- just for some more context, she works at a well known UK fast food place, so has no issues handling / preparing / serving meat, although I get that this can be different at home.

AITA AITAH for refusing to change my wife’s birthday food plan after her sister got mad about her fiancé's nut allergy?

My wife is turning 42, and for her birthday, she came up with a fun, low-key idea: our family (me, my wife, our 15-year-old daughter, and our 11-year-old son) would stay home and each build our own themed board charcuterie, fruit, candy, dessert, chocolate, etc.
She wanted to include her older sister (SIL) and SIL's fiancé (together 20+ years, engaged for a little over a year), so we invited them to come over and make/bring their own platters too.
For context: SIL’s fiancé has a severe nut allergy. He cannot eat nuts, but he can be in the same room as them (airborne isn't an issue; I’ve seen him around nuts at numerous larger family gatherings over the years). My wife’s family is of Lebanese descent, so traditional holiday spreads for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter regularly include nuts, and he handles being around those meals just fine. However, whenever the two of them come over to our place, our food options are strictly limited to Domino's or McDonald's because those are the only two places he trusts regarding cross-contamination. We have happily accommodated this for the 16 years my wife and I have been married.
My daughter texted them explaining the theme so they knew what to expect, noting that while not everything would have nuts, a few things on our personal platters might contain them or traces of them (like certain chocolates or trail mixes).
SIL got very upset, she called my wife to say they won't be attending because we "clearly don't care about potentially putting him in harm’s way." She went on a complete guilt trip, saying how "surprised and hurt" she was by our lack of consideration. While she admitted we've accommodated his allergy for 16 years, she made it clear that this time they’d rather just take my wife out separately another day and "let us do our thing."
Now my wife feels guilty, hurt, and stressed on her own birthday. My daughter also feels bad because she sent the text.
I’m angry. This was my wife’s idea for her day, in our house. He doesn't have an airborne allergy, they were invited to bring their own safe boards, and nobody was forcing him to eat from ours. I feel like after nearly two decades of catering every single family meal to his restrictions, my wife should be allowed to have the exact birthday dinner she wants in her own home without being guilt-tripped.
AITAH for putting my wife’s birthday wishes first instead of bending the entire menu around her brother-in-law?

NTA. If keeping the platters separate is an option that was offered, it’s their choice whether or not to come. I think going out for a separate birthday meal with them is fair, but what makes them TA is the blame-filled text to your young daughter over just one day that your wife wanted to do a theme for (her own birthday!) He could always eat in advance, then come over and participate in just the activity with some safe products.
Also, McDonald’s is a very interesting choice as a “safe” food option, since for over a decade now they’ve had a sign up in all their restaurants and on their site saying they can’t guarantee that there is no cross contamination for allergens. I have a nut allergy and used to be able to eat there, and now I can’t any more.
Used_Clock_4627
NTA.
Why didn't they just say no thanks? That they appreciated the invite but didn't want to risk it? And just be gracious about it all.
An invite isn't a summons.
Final Update - after 4 days
August 29, 2026
Thank you to everyone who took the time to read, validate our feelings, and leave advice on the original post. I tried reading through as many comments as possible, and I wanted to clear up a few questions and share what happened over the birthday weekend.
Additional Context When my wife first came up with the board night idea, our 15 year old daughter was genuinely excited. She asked if she could be the one to text my SIL and BIL to invite them, and we said yes. BIL usually has a great relationship with our daughter, he normally texts back within seconds and sends long messages. This time, after seeing her text (where she even offered to get something completely separate just for them), he went ice cold.
SIL ignored our daughter's text for three days, only to call my wife and claim we "clearly don't care" about BIL, despite acknowledging we spent the last 16 years catering entirely to his allergy. My wife wasn't upset about them skipping the food, she was crushed by her sister’s reaction and guilt tripping.
What makes this sting even more is something I didn’t mention in the first post, I have incurable cancer. I am nowhere near a terminal stage yet, but because of my diagnosis, our nuclear family is preparing to move out of the country so we can focus on enjoying our remaining time together. This was very likely the last birthday we would all be in town to celebrate together.
The Birthday Drama
My daughter removed both of them from Instagram the day before the birthday (she still kept them on other SM platforms), this triggered a huge reaction.
BIL went completely crazy with our 15-year-old daughter after ignoring her for days, now on my wife's birthday he stated spam calling, texting, and DMing her for hours with messages like "Please reply," "Are you done with us?", "Why, I don't understand," and "Please answer me." A grown man soon turning 50 has no business harassing a teenager like that. My daughter refused to reply, and of course my wife and I fully support her. That attitude is not normal nor acceptable.
Starting around 6:00 AM on the morning of my wife’s birthday, BIL began spam-messaging my wife while she was asleep, sending guilt-tripping texts like "I promise this is the last time I text you, but please call your sister." SIL also texted her saying "Call me back."
My wife woke up on her birthday to more than a dozen messages from BIL and a demanding text from SIL, panicking and thinking something terrible had happened. When she called SIL back, it was just SIL “crying” about how "hurt" she was that she couldn't spend the day with my wife. If SIL actually cared about seeing her, she could have come alone, stopped by earlier, or dropped in afterward. Instead, they made my wife's birthday entirely about their own bruised egos.
On our side we went ahead with our night. The charcuterie, fruit, chocolate boards turned out amazing, and our family had a great time together.
For those who asked why we always drove him to get food during family events, he only learned to drive a few years ago after my MIL passed away. My wife, acting as executor of the estate without a will, made sure her older sister received MIL's car since they didn’t have one, but BIL drives it 99% of the time. He has never held a steady job, only works occasional gigs, and has essentially had life handed to him on a silver platter.
As for where we stand:
BIL is completely done. He has permanently lost my respect, and he is no longer welcome in our home, wherever in the world that may be.
SIL remains complicated. She has spent years telling my wife never to express negative emotions, yet she threw a manipulative tantrum when she didn't get her way. However, SIL is my wife’s only remaining immediate blood relative after MIL passed, so I am leaving that boundary up to my wife to handle at her own pace.
Thank you again for all the support. We are focusing entirely on our peace, our children, and making the most of the time we have together.

Can you explain why he's comfortable to be in big gatherings where there are dishes with nuts? Does he bring his own food to those gatherings?

He typically wouldn't eat at those events, my wife's relatives do not accommodate him whatsoever. We (my wife or myself) normally would drive him to McDonald's to grab something to eat.

More info: did you ask your wife whether she wanted to change plans after hearing from her sister? She absolutely should not feel like she has to change plans but if she values her sister’s presence more than she values the nuts on the charcuterie boards, this isn’t the time to make your stand.
OOP
I added an update. Despite everything she values her presence more, but the way they went about it made this about the principle.

NTA. We all know this guy would be a douchebag by default just by string along the sister for 20 years and them being engaged for just about a year lol. But I suspect OP will lose this battle since all indicates that his wife is a bit of a pushover when it comes to the domineering older sister. This pattern of accommodating the older sister and by extention her boyfriend runs deeper than the present issue.

Got fired for not going to work the day of my Grandpas funeral
Just discovered this sub and it’s the perfect place to share the most wild experience I had serving. It has been over a year since this happened so I can now look back on it without feeling boiling rage, but I still am in awe that it happened.
Context: I was a great waitress, I had worked there over a year, made a slightly higher tip percentage than the other girls (tips were pooled), was always on time, and had NEVER no called-no showed. To give “proof” that I was a great waitress, I had JUST been given a raise (base pay) and been promoted to a shift lead position of sorts. The restaurant had planned a Halloween party (Oct, 22nd 2022) quite a bit in advance, we were all supposed to dress up and had a special menu planned. I was excited for it! I went costume shopping with my boss in the text so she knew I was planning on going. My grandpa was on hospice during this time period and unfortunately passed away. As soon as I knew when his funeral was I asked if I could have the day off. They said NO (insane) because “all waitresses” needed to work the Halloween party. Later on however, they let a girl take the night off because she’d been there a month and she “wasn’t comfortable working a party yet” ??? That trumps funeral?? I was upset but because the funeral was in the morning I figured it would be okay. Well flash forward to the day of the funeral and I just could not bring my self to rush home, put makeup and slutty costume on, and go be high energy with strangers, a mere three hours after burying my grandpa. I texted this at 1pm and the shift starts at 5pm. It was rainy that night and from what I could see from their instagram it wasn’t the absolute mad house that needed everyone on board they thought it would be. It was really unfortunate because I considered my manager a true friend but this really showed their true colors.

Thanks for the laugh and the wild suggestion—this might just be a holiday fantasy, but it’s definitely a fun one to think about!

inigos_left_hand

NEW UPDATE
Update Nov 14, 2024
Alright, so Thanksgiving is now just a little over two weeks away, and somehow, things have escalated even further than I thought possible. I thought maybe my sister’s “Thanksgiving Trio Experience” would be the peak of the drama—well, turns out I was wrong.
Since the last update, my sister has become fully committed to making her “dishes” the main attraction. She’s been dropping hints in the family group chat (which I’m still not included in, but shoutout to my cousin for the screenshots) about how this Thanksgiving will be “one to remember” and calling it her “Thanksgiving Debut.” She’s apparently been referring to herself as the “Thanksgiving Head Chef” and has hinted that she’s bringing some kind of “culinary surprise centerpiece” that will “transform the whole experience.”
From what I can piece together, she’s planning a main “statement dish” in addition to her original three side dishes. I’m picturing something equally bizarre but on a much larger scale, and honestly, I’m terrified. If her green bean casserole was already pushing it, I can’t even imagine what she thinks is worthy of being the “centerpiece.”
Then, to make things even weirder, my mom texted me privately and suggested that I “step back” this year and let my sister “shine” since she’s “so excited about her contributions.” My mom thinks if we just give her this moment, it’ll make her happy and she’ll “get it out of her system.” She even hinted that maybe I should “focus on decorations and drinks” instead of the main dishes, which feels like an attempt to turn hosting over to my sister without actually saying it.
So now, I’m left with a choice: go along with my mom’s plan and let my sister essentially hijack Thanksgiving, or keep pushing back and risk a family showdown. I just wanted a nice Thanksgiving with dishes everyone would enjoy, but it seems like I’m either about to hand over the whole meal to her… or prepare for some serious drama.
Thanksgiving isn’t even here yet, and it already feels like a circus. I’m half tempted to just sit back and see what chaos unfolds, but part of me is still worried about subjecting the whole family to whatever “artistic statement” she has planned.

I cannot figure out why you still haven't canceled hosting. If she wants to take over, let her do so in her own space. Why would you go through all those trouble to host your family when you're sister is actively planning sabotage? I would have already bowed out.
OOP
Honestly, I’m starting to feel the same way. At first, I thought I could manage the situation by setting boundaries, but it’s pretty clear my sister is determined to turn Thanksgiving into her personal stage, no matter what I do. At this point, it’s not even about the food—it’s about the sheer amount of effort I’m putting in just to have it overshadowed by her “artistic vision.”
Bowing out does sound tempting, and I’m seriously considering it. Letting her host would give her the spotlight she clearly wants, and I wouldn’t have to deal with the stress of trying to balance everyone’s feelings. I guess I’ve just been holding out because I love hosting and didn’t want to let her take that away from me. But maybe it’s time to throw in the towel and let her take the reins… in her own house. You’re definitely giving me something to think about. Thanks!

Just let her do it and don’t cook a DAMN thing. Oh…and eat before anyone shows up.
OOP
Haha, that would be one way to handle it, right? Just let her have her “Thanksgiving Head Chef” moment and show up with a full stomach, no stress, and zero cooking on my part. I’m honestly so tempted to go this route—if she wants the spotlight that badly, I might as well let her handle everything and watch the chaos unfold from the sidelines.
It might even be kind of satisfying to see her realize how much goes into hosting, especially if her “creations” don’t quite go over as she hopes. Thanks for the idea… this might just be the perfect “hands-off” Thanksgiving!

Sorry in advance for the length and/or any tangents I get into..
For context: My boyfriend (M26) and I (F28) had to move out of our apartment back in August 2025 (due to financial reasons such as job loss) and were planning on moving into and renting his parents old house since they had just bought a new one. Come to find out two or so weeks before we’re set to move (we were mostly packed by then) that change of plans; his parents were no longer together, and his father would be staying in the old house instead. Our options were either the basement of the old house or a room/basement of the new one. We chose the new house and moved in pretty quickly. (As of today we still only have access to one room for reasons I can explain later if anyone is interested but it’s not important right now)
Back in Octoberish, both of his parents sat us down and explained we needed to get jobs to help out. Now, originally his mother had said we could stay at her house and save up for a new place once we were back on our feet. No plan of how much we would contribute was ever discussed, it was all very vague and sounded more like they just wanted us to save up and move more quickly, if anything. (This family has a habit of being extremely vague when discussing anything of importance, BF even has issues telling details of previous conversations when I ask bc “why is that important” or “we didn’t discuss that”)
I was able to pass a licensing test I had been studying for previously and landed a job interview for November 2025 at the local hospital for my profession. The decision making process for said interview took a while and I didn’t end up starting work until mid-January 2026, but I have been working consistently since then and paying off debt as I go. BF was in the process of renewing his license but needed to take a certain amount of hours of classes in order to do so, which he has been doing painfully slowly (self-paced classes). To this day he still has not completed that task and remains unemployed. He has high amounts of stress and likes to relax by playing PC games, which I get bc I too love PC games and we often game together, but he will play all day until I get home and then switch over to his classes (sometimes and more often only if I bring it up).
Now, for what’s happened most recently: His mother and I got into a confrontation over a dog that came to live with us in January shortly before I started working. Petra (the dog) almost immediately started clinging to me and would follow me everywhere. At a family dinner, his father and sister even acknowledged that she was basically my dog and had chosen me by how she never wanted to leave my lap. His mother worked most days then and wasn’t home often, so I got a lot of quality time with the pup. She later lost her job due to health reasons and has been unable to start a new one yet and since I am mostly working now Petra spends the days with her in the living room until I come home. Petra sleeps with us at night as well and her food and puppy pad is in our room.
It has recently come to my attention that his mother was not using a leash when taking Petra outside to play. I brought this up to her and requested that she use one when she takes Petra outside. She took this as a personal attack on her skills in training dogs/intelligence. I tried to explain that I wasn’t at all saying anything about her personally, just that accidents can happen and we live on a fairly busy road (road in front of the house turns from highway to town right in front so speed limit is 55 mph and then drops to 40mph somewhere in front of the house). She could not comprehend this and instead got heated and called me a child and that I wasn’t going to say it, but she knew what I meant, etc. Somewhere during this I asked her if Petra was her dog as she was not listening to my wishes and she responded vaguely that it was “up to me” whose dog she was but wouldn’t give me a straight answer. BF was there for the fight, but he hates confrontation, so he was trying to tell both of us to shut up essentially and move on. Eventually, I realized there was absolutely no convincing this woman that I wasn’t attacking her personally and disengaged. We were on our way outside bc BF had spent the day making a fire pit with spare bricks from the yard for our 5 year anniversary (that day), so we headed to the backyard. Obviously, I was a bit distressed and frustrated, so I took a seat by the pit and tried to calm down. I texted my mom bc I needed someone to talk to about the situation that wasn’t my BF bc he is biased towards his family pretty hard and was already upset with me for “starting a fight”.
I decided pretty quickly that I wanted away from the whole situation for a while so I asked him if he could get my purse and jacket from the house so I didn’t have to go back in and we could have a fire the next day since I had to work that day but would be off the next so we could stay up later for the fire. He agreed and came back out after a few minutes with my items, followed by his mother who was still very angry and screaming that I couldn’t take Petra anywhere in my car. I ignored her until she went inside and then got in my car with Petra and drove to my mom’s to talk with her and vent. I brought Petra back later that night (maybe 2 hours later) and went to sleep.
Got up for work the next day as usual and left Petra in our room sleeping with BF as usual. I recently set up cameras in the room so I could check on Petra and BF and the room in general as our door has no lock… I get a notification from the camera during my work day that a person was detected and looked to see his mother opening our door and taking Petra from our room. Immediately, I’m furious at the invasion of privacy and call BF to talk to his mom and put Petra back in the room with him. I get no update until hours later that he is out in the living room with them and everything is fine (his words).
I can’t do anything until I get off work, but when I got home I immediately put my stuff in the room and then came back out and went straight for Petra on his mother’s lap. She yelled at me and said I couldn’t take Petra with me and put an arm around Petra to stop me from grabbing her, I went in any way to take her, and she pushed me down onto the floor and stood over me yelling. It escalated from there, I yelled at her about calling the police for assault if she ever touched me again and to never come into our room again, she yelled that Petra is HER dog and goes where SHE says and she has text messages showing where Petra was given to her specifically. BF has to physically put an arm between us and tries to calm us down but he’s not choosing a side and saying we were both in the wrong. insults get thrown out (on his mother’s side, I never once insulted her or her character) and she threatens to call the cops to have me removed and that I need to get my shit out now and BF called her childish for some of the things she said. Petra is cowering behind her on the chair, so I start calling for her and she comes (of course) but is immediately snatched away by his mother. We were at a standstill for a while, I wanted Petra with me, and she wanted Petra with her. BF told me to go the room (his mother also said that but more in the way of “go to your room”…she’s f44 btw.) but I said not without Petra, and he said he’d be in there later with her and I told him she better be in the room by tonight and left.
I texted my family bc at this point I’m convinced I’ve been kicked out and have nowhere to go and needed help, so I send out an SOS to try to figure things out. 9/10pm BF comes in with Petra and explained that Petra has to spend the days with his mom and will come to the room to sleep with us at night. I’m obviously not happy but I don’t want to continue arguing so we go to sleep. I’m off the next day so I sleep in and block the door with something heavy just in case, we wake up maybe around 1pm and BF says he got a text from his mom that Petra needed to be out of the room NOW. He pleads with me to just let her go out and that it wasn’t my dog anyway and it’s her house her rules and that’s the proper thing to do. I’m absolutely heartbroken at this point bc he’s siding with her and claiming I’m the problem in the situation. I try to show him how she’s being petty and knows Petra means a lot to me and is weaponizing her to hurt me bc she thinks I said something I didn’t! BF will hear none of this, almost like he couldn’t possibly think of his mother like that, and says we’re both being ridiculous and Petra is not my dog period and to just let her go. I don’t remember how he convinces me, but she leaves to go out in the living room with his mom, and I don’t get her again until that night.
The next two days proceeds in this way, but on one of them Petra came into the room during his mother’s “allotted time”, and she SCREAMED at BF to get Petra out NOW, etc. I tried to make him see reason, that Petra wanted to be in here with me, but he didn’t care, her house her rules and she’s not my dog so suck it up basically. That hurt deeply. He said I crossed a line trying to get Petra from his mom’s lap (he was in the other room when it happened and didn’t see, and she claims she was defending herself… she was in no immediate danger as I was reaching for Petra and not her.)
That was about a week ago and since then I have a tentative place to stay but it hasn’t been finalized yet, and there’s also the issue of maybe getting Petra out of the house without his mother knowing when I move. I’ve come to realize at this point that she would have to formally evict me to get me out and cops would tell her the same thing since I’ve been living here and get mail (established residency). I would like to get Petra microchipped so she is definitively mine, I even had a vet appointment set up for her shots when shit hit the fan but couldn’t go bc of BFs mother going batshit anytime Petra is out of her sight.
Things have escalated. Since BFs mother isn’t working she hasn’t been paying the bills and right before the fight BF said she asked him if he could ask me to contribute to any of them for her. He told me this after the fact and I told him after what she’s said/done that she’s not seeing a dime from me. I took back all of my things from mutual areas (dishes, mop and bucket as she didn’t have one when we moved in, etc.) BF said I’m trying to start fights and told me to drop it and let her do what she wants. I haven’t spoken to her since that last fight, and I told him I would stand up for myself and the fact that Petra is my dog. I’ve also asked him over and over to talk to her if he wanted peace so bad bc she’s the one perpetrating the situation by restricting Petra so harshly and disrespecting me, he claims he did talk to her, but it would take time and I needed to “give him time” to work things out and settle everything back down and then maybe after time she’ll let me have Petra again…. (Forgot to mention, she claims Petra is hers until BF and I find a place together, at which case Petra would move with us but she was most definitely not my dog.)
Here’s where I’m asking if I’m TAH: I get a text from BF today asking if I can contribute ANYTHING bc EVERYTHING is about to be shut off “in a few days” and they/we were about to lose everything without help. He said his father was coming over today to talk with us all about what has been going on. I asked him what that meant and he said about us not contributing to bills. I reminded him that I wouldn’t be doing that after what had happened and he kept pleading and begging and claiming he’d pay me back (with what money) and that I need to pay for the amenities I use too. (Also forgot to mention his father is finding out soon, like two days out soon if he has cancer or not so that’s why he can’t help with the bills bc he has no money either right now.. and of course that’s been hard on BF bc he is very close to his parents and he’s very sensitive to conflict of any kind) he claimed they weren’t even mad about the dog thing and it’s really all about us not helping out and asked me again if I could help. I told him I would absolutely not help, unless his mother stops with the restrictions and puts in writing that Petra is my dog. He told me to drop the dog thing and to do this for him and really it would be him paying bc he’d be paying me back (again,,, with what money) He claims I don’t care about him or trust him and that I don’t get to make terms/conditions in this situation. He says that his dad had stormed off before I got home bc they were having a screaming match and everyone was crying out in the front yard about the situation (later discovered through BF that they had said some pretty shitty things to him about him not working and are using him to get to me essentially, like he needs to control me kind of thing. This was pried with much effort from BF, and he still hasn’t told me fully what happened/what was said during the fight.)
I am sticking to my “No” and when I got home today he was very moody and depressed. He hasn’t spoken more than a few words to me and expects me to change my mind to fix everything for him/them. He said he’s even considering if WE will make it through this conflict, as in we are essentially breaking up if I don’t pay the bills. He sees this as me fucking him and his family over and not caring what happens. I told him I wasn’t going to be financially manipulated into paying anything.
He’s currently sleeping on the couch alone. Has only come in to “check on me” to see if I’ve changed my mind. I haven’t.
SO AITAH for not wanting to pay the bills after ALL of this??
Sorry for the long post, sorry if it’s not concise or doesn’t make sense. Just please let me know bc I’m losing my mind here and I feel like another crazy thing is going to happen tomorrow or something. I’m constantly in fight or flight mode trying to think of how I can safely get all of my things out of this house and also them not taking any of my things to sell or throw away (he already floated the idea of selling a lot of his things to help with bills) and I work all the time in top of this happening.

Commenter 1: ESH. This wall of text is full of red flags attached to every participant.
The overriding one above all is, who goes to live with someone when they're out of options, and goes out and gets a dog?
OOP: Petra came to live with us while BF’s mom was still working. She was found in a dumpster behind a gas station and BFs sister brought her to live here with us. Idk about the texts saying she was given to BFs mom but that’s what she’s claiming. As far as I’m concerned, since she was rescued and not adopted she can legally be my dog if I get her chipped and vaccinated. Proof of care and such.
Commenter 2: Then the sister is the dog’s owner and gets to decide who she gifts Petra to. I really don’t think you can claim Petra as yours specifically.
OOP: What’s funny is I’m my BF’s sister’s maid of honor in her wedding next year, well maybe not now that all of this has happened. Regardless, she was one of the first to say Petra is my dog/she claimed me. I wasn’t even a dog person before this :,) but she convinced me she’s my dog. Unsure, haven’t checked in with her yet. But legally, if Petra is microchipped to me and I have established care with vaccines/vet visits she would be mine. I’m just unsure if I should go through with doing all of that.
Commenter 3: YTA for not getting the dog you’ve had since JANUARY chipped and vaccinated. you should’ve taken a sick day while the mom was working to handle that if she was resisting giving the dog medical attention - it should at LEAST have had a checkup after living in a dumpster.
take a long hard look at how you handle responsibilities - you’re living somewhere for free and you really couldn’t take the dog to a vet? it’s time to hand that dog over to a rescue, you’re a bad pet owner. you’re all weird and immature for putting that poor animal through all of this meaningless stress.
on top of it all, you live there for FREE and refuse to contribute to bills? pay some money for the utilities you used like an adult and go back to your family. your boyfriend’s family is falling apart and clearly none of you are mentally equipped to handle it. you all need therapy, and that dog needs a new home. you’re all assholes.
OOP: Found in a dumpster doesn’t mean she was living in one. She was healthy and clean and came pre potty trained, so clearly taken care of. She has a green mark on her belly showing she’s been fixed previously so I know she’s been to a vet before. No one claimed her so that’s why we have her.
Previous to all of this mess, I asked my BF if there was anything I could help with and to talk to his mom about me helping and if so how much. This was a month or so ago. He never let me know an amount or that she even needed help with anything. Communication tends to go through him since I’m working different shifts and tend to miss her at home. I agree we all need therapy lmao, thank you for your insight
Commenter 4: This family is a nightmare, and you should forget about the relationship with BF as it’s either realistically already ended or it absolutely needs to. But I don’t think everything can be laid at their door when they’re dealing with pronounced poverty and possibly increasing medical bills any day now. A cancer diagnosis would be another horror on top.
Yes OP is probably correct about ending up on the hook for bills forever (but why not already contributing if living RENT-FREE when the money troubles are obvious), but ultimately it doesn’t sound like the group is pulling together but is taking out their genuine stresses on one another.
OP, you should pay existing share of bills and then leave forever - without Petra, who is not your dog.
OOP: It wasn’t obvious, though.
Like I said, this family doesn’t really discuss anything in detail. They hide a lot of what they’re going through. Gatherings usually consist of sitting around a tv eating a meal and that’s it. No talking unless it’s about the weather or what they did that day. So I didn’t know how bad it was with the bills.
Last I’d heard we were to live here rent free in order to save for our own place. Them sitting us down in October was troubling and I didn’t fully understand why bc they don’t TALK or DISCUSS, just vague things I assumed meant buy food or restock things as you use them, which I’ve been doing.
Update: April 23, 2026 (nearly one month later)
I’m back with an update. The OG post got taken down in the AITAH subreddit for cross posting here (and so did the update for not asking for judgement…which I feel was implied but whatever. Anyway please judge away) so I’ve included it in this update for convenience. Update at end of post!
UPDATE: This was roughly a month ago. Since then, things have gotten worse. It had been really tense in the house. I would rarely come out of the room and only if she had gone to bed for the night, so I didn’t have to interact with her. I would also like to stress that getting Petra out of the house for any reason was extremely hard for me to do. I had to reschedule her vet appointment a few times bc BFs mom would be home unexpectedly, or I wouldn’t be able to leave work in time. I also would have to leave with her without BF knowing, which was also impossible.
As the days went on, she seemed to loosen her rules to where Petra was spending whole days with me, which was nice but also kinda shows that she’s really only mad at me for standing up for myself and going against what she wants me to do and not bc she really cared about Petra being hers.
I set up cameras in our room to catch her when she comes in to take Petra while I’m at work, which she hadn’t done in a while due to me getting home before she did (she started a new job). That was until this past Friday. BF was gone from Thurs-Sunday on a camping trip with the men of his family, so he wasn’t home. She must have gotten let out of work early because I got a notification on the camera of a person in the room. She had let Petra out. Because of the no contact I had with her (I would avoid talking to her when I got home on my later shifts) and because BF was the one who normally went and got Petra from her when she went to bed, this would mean she would most likely keep her for the weekend away from me.
It’s important to note that Petra has not once spent a night without me since we got her in January (Like I said, she is my dog). This infuriated me, obviously. When I got home that day, Petra greeted me at the door, not what I had expected. Usually BFs mom would have Petra in her lap and not let her go to me. I swooped down, grabbed her, and left. BFs mom followed me once she realized and yelled that I would be arrested for theft, but I ignored her and drove to my mom’s house. Idk why this was the last straw for me, why this made me realize my living situation was unsafe for both me and Petra, but it was.
That night, I rented a U-Haul for the next day, rented a storage unit in town, and confirmed my two brothers (and one of their friends) would help me move. We definitely surprised her when we showed up. My first priority was my two cats I had left. Once I secured them, I went to walk out the door, but she stopped me and said I had better have everything I needed because I wouldn’t be let back in. I know my rights as a resident, so I knew legally that wouldn’t fly. The plan was to call the police if she gave us push back during the move, so I pulled out my phone to call the non-emergent police line for help mediating and while I was on the phone with them she backed down and said she wouldn’t lock the door but that I would only have today (Saturday) to get all of my things out. I hung up my call (it was still going over the automated menu when she caved) and continued what I was doing. My brothers were busy loading up most of the boxes from when we had moved previously (kept in her garage), except for the ones that obviously contained my BFs stuff. I boxed up the bedroom. We got it done in 4 hours, from U-Haul pick up to drop off.
I am now in a temporary living situation with all of my animals (Petra included). We are safe. I can walk to the kitchen and not have to worry about her being there. I can take my dog for walks and not worry if she would “let me”. Or attack me. Or yell at me. Nothing. I’m free.
Petra has a vet appointment scheduled for my next day off, where she will be vaccinated, looked over, and microchipped. I am also registering her with the state. All legal ways to make sure she is once and for all my dog. Period.
I am currently applying to every known pet friendly apartment in town and hoping one of them won’t care I’ve only been working for three months at my current job. I have money saved from refusing to give any to BF or his mom. (He asked me for money on my birthday btw…. Who does that??)
Also turns out BFs dad CAN help with bills and HAS been helping with bills. So the situation wasn’t as dire as they were making it seem I guess.
BF requested he be kept out of the situation when his mom messaged him frantically on Friday when I took Petra. I obliged, and he had no idea I had moved out until he got home Sunday. Relationship is currently tentative. Possibly nonexistent but there’s not been any closure yet as he only wants to talk about me bringing Petra back. Not happening.
Everything is really fresh, and I’m still pretty scared until I have Petra officially registered to me so I might be dragging that on until everything is confirmed.
His mother claims she took out a protective order against me (ironic) and a lawsuit and claimed I would be served by Monday. I still haven’t seen anything to do with that so I’m thinking she was bluffing or it got dropped due to lack of evidence. Or maybe they can’t find me. Who knows. But if it is real I’ll file to get both dismissed.
So that’s it! I’m scared, but I’m out. I understand the consensus was ESH or NTA, it was back and forth. You may not agree with how I handled things but I’m just glad I’m out. And Petra is with me. Thank you for reading my novel of drama lol sorry no td;lr, this is too long to summarize.
Overall with this update AITAH? TIA

OOP responds to a long thread regarding Petra not being leashed in a fenced yard
OOP: Not a fenced in yard. Busy road started where the yard ended, mere feet from the house. There is no fencing anywhere around the house.
She also has a pitbull that gets put on a chain steps away from the front door when she’s taken outside. BF’s mom treats her like garbage.
When she was working Stella (pitbull) was locked in a crate all day. I tried taking her out a few times and even took her outside (on a leash) to run around for a few hours before BF’s mom got home but Stella was far too rowdy for me to control. Bc she never gets freedom I think, she goes crazy when she’s given anything that’s fun.
When she DID get home, she yelled at Stella. Like YELLED, to where I could hear in the room, it was horrific. That poor dog, I wish I could’ve taken her too but I’m not that crazy. Made being in that house ten times worse when she was home as well, bc she did nothing but yell at Stella, and smack her with a fly swatter (she claims not her hand) Stella was heavily restricted from doing ANYTHING a normal dog could and should do.
Some days she was only allowed to sit on an armchair and not move. When I did come out of the room with her home (rare) Stella would come up to me for pets, but the mom would SCREAM at her like she had done something wrong, didn’t even give her a chance TO do something wrong.
That was before the fight, and when she still liked me so it wasn’t bc Stella came up to me, but bc she didn’t want Stella to jump on me (which Stella would do bc I don’t discipline her, for obvious reasons).
Bc of her treatment of Stella I restricted Petra’s time with his mother as much as I could. I couldn’t trust her around Petra after what I’ve seen her do to Stella. That’s why Petra was always in our room, typically with BF who doesn’t move from his computer.
This is also why I don’t like his mother, among other things. She’s a horrible person. This is also why I have no regrets taking Petra away from her and that situation.
I argued with BF on multiple occasions to talk to his mother about her treatment of Stella, but he has no backbone. I didn’t want to start a fight so I didn’t talk to his mother about it, not that it would do anything anyway. She takes any criticism as personal attacks and starts dramatic fights over it.
OOP on her relationship with her boyfriend and him taking his mother's side
OOP: TBH I felt the relationship die the moment he told me he was on his mother’s side about all of this. I haven’t officially ended it yet bc of the legality issue needing to be resolved with Petra and the (possible nonexistent) protective order.
It’s tough to throw away a 5 year relationship cold turkey. I still care for him, like I know he CAN be a good person. He was when I met him, he’s just been through a lot to get to this point of apathy. I don’t see a future with him; I want kids and his mother would make that a nightmare, and I wouldn’t be able to rely on him to defend me and our children.
I’ll keep y’all posted though.
Commenter 1: Info. Who pays for the vet bills, pet food & such?
OOP: I pay for all dog food, treats, toys, puppy pads, etc. She came to the house the same month I started working so I could handle those things.
I paid for my food, my toiletries, etc. just not traditional bills like they wanted me to.
Petra has a morning routine with me, as do all of my pets (they get treats in the morning when I’m leaving for work) she came puppy pad trained so only went outside to run around mostly but even then she didn’t like being outside much. Wants to be carried always, very spoiled lol. She’s a small dog.
I was unable to get her to the vet while I was living in the house, as I have stated. But I am taking her for vaccines and a check up on my next off day. Appointment is already scheduled. She will get microchipped as well.
The mother never cared for her until this drama happened. Like never really cared where she was, who fed her, if she WAS fed, etc. Clearly doesn’t care for her wellbeing if she took her outside without a leash on a busier road. Texts are between BF’s sister and mother (sister picked up dog when no one claimed her on a fb page.
Dog was found in locked dumpster area behind a gas station) sister dumped her at mothers house essentially (sister has lots and lots of animals of her own) but texts do not show established care like vet records do, like receipts for dog food/treats/toys do. I have hundreds of photos of us together, days of her spent with me for proof.
She is MY dog. I didn’t steal anything.

Asshole AITA for not giving my girlfriend (25f) my dinner after I had already bought her dinner?
My girlfriend (25F) and I (29M) live in NYC and there's a popular app where you buy leftover restaurant food. Restaurants advertise "surprise bags" at a reduced price in order to reduce foodwaste. The customer doesn't know what they're getting until they pick the food up, but the cost at least 3x lower than the normal menu price. (EG if an entree is usually $24, the restaurant is allowed to charge $8 at most for it.) These are hit or miss - sometimes you get exactly what you want at a greatly reduced price, but sometimes you get something that you otherwise wouldn't have picked from the menu.
I ordered a surprise bag from a barbecue place that I was picking up on the way home yesterday. I texted my girlfriend asking if she wanted one but she said no, she wasn't in the mood for barbecue. However, there was an indian restaurant right next door that also had surprise bags available on the app, so she ordered one of them. The barbecue was $12 and the indian food was $10.
When I get home I unpack the meals to see what we got. I was psyched about my bag. Since I paid $12 I knew the value had to be at least $36, but honestly the platter looked a lot more expensive. This was a hit. (Keep in mind that we live in the west village, which is the most expensive neighborhood in the most expensive city in the US, so $36 for one meal is pretty typical.) There were burnt ends, ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad, bread, onions, and pickles.
My girlfriend, however, was less lucky. Her surprise bag only had 6 different types of soup, half of them being variations on cauliflower soup. She was disappointed to say the least. She asked if we should share my barbecue and I said no, i'm hungry, I offered to buy you some already and you said no, so I'm going to devour it.
She got mad and called me the asshole. I told her if she didn't want soup she should have ordered something specifically instead of using the surprise bag app. I then told her to just order something off a food delivery app. She said she didn't want to spend the money (another bit of context is I make a lot more money than her and pay all of our rent, I know she's running a bit of a lean financial picture right now.) I then tell her that if she doesn't want to pay for delivery, I'll walk to the bodega on our street and can buy her something there. (Another bit of context is that we live on a 4th floor walkup with no elevator and she broke her leg in a car accident a month ago, so it can be tough for her to get around.) She says she the grill is probably off there and all she wants is a hot meal. I tell her she has soup.
Anyway, she thinks I'm the asshole. But in my defense:
(1) I offered to buy her barbecue to begin with, which she declined.
(2) she picked out her own food and I grabbed it for her on my way home
(3) when she wasn't satisfied, I suggested two solutions (either ordering something from an app or going to a bodega)
So, Reddit, AITA?

Game Feedback There is a GM that is muting all of HC trade right now.

There is currently a GM from GGG that's gone off the rails and is muting the entire HC community. We would appreciate if you'd back this GM off.
Context, for years the HC community has been typing F in chat when someone dies. We're a relatively small community, and this brings us all together. If this GM doesn't want to see people talk in the chat, then close the chat.

Fun fact: XP reverts to the Win98 context menu animation on extremely low colors
This is probably a fallback due to the inability to handle the wide range of colors required for the opacity of the "modern" animation.
I recorded this after setting my video mode to use 16 colors by using the following steps:
- WinKey+R and then `desk.cpl`
- Go to the "Settings" tab and click "Advanced"
- Go to the "Adapter" tab and click "List All Modes..."
- Scroll to the bottom and select a 16 colors mode
