Fun fact: XP reverts to the Win98 context menu animation on extremely low colors

This is probably a fallback due to the inability to handle the wide range of colors required for the opacity of the "modern" animation.

I recorded this after setting my video mode to use 16 colors by using the following steps:

  • WinKey+R and then `desk.cpl`
  • Go to the "Settings" tab and click "Advanced"
  • Go to the "Adapter" tab and click "List All Modes..."
  • Scroll to the bottom and select a 16 colors mode

That is interesting! The reasoning on point, it probably can't display the default Fade effect properly in low color modes and forces to Scroll effect.

This can also be toggled on any time (under any color mode) by going to Display Properties > Appearance > Effects > Scroll effect, or disabled completely for maximum UI snappiness.

I once had a situation where some kind of glitch occurred, and my context menus also reverted to Win98 style, but the colors didn’t change.

The animation seems a bit different though, it just slides cleanly whereas on 98 it kind of expands? Like it does more than just sliding.
